  • I’m going to tell you why I speak and understand 8 languages, and why understanding and speaking a language are two separate things. I’ve been exposed to many languages from a very young age, and thanks to being a curious child and traveling in Europe with my parents, I acquired a lot of them. So, get ready to see my attempts at speaking various languages, including my native language, which I haven’t spoken on this channel yet!

It's refreshing to see a TH-camr who isn't afraid to admit they have weaknesses in a language. So many TH-camrs seem to want to pretend that they are fluent in ten or more languages, when the reality for all of us is that most of the languages we pick up are by no means perfect.
I am English. I spent three years in Germany and Austria, so I speak German pretty well. I learned French for five years in school, and I speak it pretty poorly, but I understand it. I also understand Spanish, though I cannot really speak it yet, as I do not practice enough. In the future, after I improve my Spanish, I hope to learn Russian.

I can speak English very well, I guess.
I've learned English all by myself, because the English teacher in my school is just.. not a good teacher?
Well, I started "learning" that language since I was about 7-8 years old, it's been almost 5 years (yeah, I'm 11, almost 12) by playing English games like roblox, I've been singing and translating some English songs on the internet and it just got into my "mind"
I'm really interested in Spanish, French and Russian, I'd love to learn Chinese as well, because from what I've heard it's the second biggest country after Russia and it would be helpful if I ever met a Chinese person.
Anyways, great video Laura! I love your French accent :P

@@ralphbaier7793 The hypothesis of linguistic relativity, part of relativism, also known as the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis /səˌpɪər ˈhwɔːrf/, the Whorf hypothesis, or Whorfianism is a principle claiming that the structure of a language affects its speakers' world view or cognition, and thus people's perceptions are relative to their spoken language.
The principle is often defined in one of two versions: the strong hypothesis, which was held by some of the early linguists before World War II,[1] and the weak hypothesis, mostly held by some of the modern linguists.[1]
The strong version says that language determines thought and that linguistic categories limit and determine cognitive categories.
The weak version says that linguistic categories and usage only influence thought and decisions.
The principle had been accepted and then abandoned by linguists during the early 20th century following the changing perceptions of social acceptance for the other especially after World War II.[1] The origin of formulated arguments against the acceptance of linguistic relativity is attributed to Noam Chomsky.[1]

I'm also Polish :D I think this language being our native makes us learn more about other foreign languages since ours is considered to be one of the most difficult. I'd also say English is my second one, and I'm still studying it at the university. The funniest thing about it is that I used to have a more "American" accent and now I have British since it's academic. My third (right now) I'd say is Italian because I'm currently studying it at the uni too. Unfortunately, we don't have many opportunities for practicing speaking but I can communicate on a quite good level. Especially when I'm in Italy and it's required from me somehow. The fourth one is French which I learned for almost 6 years and at some point, I knew it very well. Unfortunately, I don't practice it anymore so I forgot a lot and now I remember only the basics. Btw, I love your French, I wish I could speak like you

My recommendation is that you work on prosody, avoiding to stress the first syllable of words (because otherwise it sounds like you are insisting on something) and make it more expressive. You can also try to use a less "written" register of speech ("c'est pourquoi" is hardly ever heard orally). Continue comme ça ! ;)

Hi Laura! Very nice video :D I have a Polish friend from college and I knew a Polish girl when I was still figure skating. So cool that you have learned so many different languages!
I'm from the US, but my mom immigrated here from Singapore and my dad from Hong Kong. My mom speaks Mandarin and my dad speaks Cantonese, but they understand each other's dialects so they just speak in their own native dialects to each other; it's an interesting dynamic! I did attend Chinese school to learn Mandarin when I was young but my speech therapist claimed that it was hurting my ability to learn English in my elementary school. I could not speak proper sentences in English until I was at least 4 or 5 years old, and even up until maybe 7 or 8 I was still struggling with speech. But now I speak, write, and understand English perfectly. I also learned Spanish from 3rd grade all through high school, and I continue to take occasional classes in college. I did end up taking a Chinese class in high school but I lost a lot of what I learned since it was just one class ^^. I did try to learn some Japanese and Russian on Duolingo; I know some very basic phrases. I also know just a few words of French and Italian. And my Polish friend in college did teach my the Polish alphabet during quarantine; I still have the flashcards! Learning languages is fun and I love travelling.

Sorry to say that but I am a little disappointed actually. (Because of the clickbait)
Is not like you can speak 8 languages. You just speak Polish and English properly and you're also, just able to say basic learnt by heart sentences and random words in other languages or at least you tried to. Know a language or speak a language does mean you are free to communicate and you can be understood and understand easily. I speak Italian Polish and English; that means whenever you talk to me about whatever you want in one of these languages it comes naturally to me to make conversation. NOW: I can write and sing songs in Russian,i can read a newspaper in French and translate it,I can have a small talk in Spanish,I can count to 100 in German, i can swear in Chinese BUT *I DON'T SAY THAT I CAN SPEAK 8 LANGUAGES* (because as I said before I can communicate for real only in 3 of them) SO NEITHER SHOULD YOU. Just because of your credibility if you know what I mean. Beside that, you're nice and funny and also an inspiration to continue to learn and improve.

Hey, Laura! I’m a 43 year old American who speaks English y también hace aproximadamente 26 años estudiaba Japones por 3 años, y aunque lo pronuncio muy bien ya no lo conozco tanto porque para decir la verdad no hice mi tarea, más bien, desde 24 años aprendí Español y con esto soy bilingue. Я сейчас изучаю только последние семьдесят семь дней, так что у меня не очень хорошо получается! But I think it’s awesome what you’re doing, I hope your channel explodes, and maybe I can learn Polish and Czech from you after I get better at Russian? I also need to really brush up on my nihongo... tsukoshi hanashimasu! :) I would love to learn Korean, too. My brother-in-law is from Hyderabad and speaks numerous languages and I hope he will teach me Hindi and Telegu, but my only real opportunities other than that are learning online. I don’t speak them, but understand fairly well Italian, Portuguese, and French, in descending order, and since my ancestry is old English and German I am interested in those languages as well. Anyway, you’re awesome! Sigue adelante, y espero que seamos amigos! Пока пока!

I have no clue why many ppl would think it was a clickbait. As she already stated her proficiency level for each language, I don't see there's an issue of saying she knows a language as long as she's able to use that language for communication. After all, no one can utterly excel at a language/skill in the world. Besides, It's impossible for one to have 8 languages at native level. Even Chinese is my native language, there's still a huge room for improvement. Why don't we just encourage someone who embraces different culture and puts the effort into learning several languages?
