Hi everybody, my name's Stefano and this is my Language Snapshot 2017, my first-ever video for TH-cam, and despite some cuts it's still quite... long! Skip the introduction (2:05) if you want to listen directly to the other languages.
    Languages spoken:
    00:25 English
    02:20 German
    04:11 Portuguese
    05:28 French
    07:30 Finnish
    09:19 Spanish
    10:18 Japanese
    12:24 Romanian
    14:17 Italian
14:45 (Mandarin and Icelandic, only one sentence each)
    Further notes:
    - this video was recorded in Apr. 2017 on two different days and at different times of day, so I apologize for the sudden changes in lighting (whoever has spent some time in Brussels knows just how it is like here :D).
    - This is a long overdue video and I'd like to thank all my friends (not only polyglots!) for their encouragement to finally reach out and join in...
    - While I am aware of some mistakes that I made in this video, I do appreciate corrections because these can make me a better speaker, thank you in advance for your help.
    - A couple of things in these video are already "old", in that the most recent Polyglot Gathering was in Bratislava at the beginning of June this year, I was there as well and it was a lot of fun! Also, in the meantime I've been in Romania for the third time and I loved it once again, had many opportunities to practice the language and (hopefully) improved my conversational skills (still need to work A LOT on my vocabulary though).
    - I promise that my next videos will be much, much shorter... :)

Holy hell my mouth dropped when I heard your Finnish?! I'm a bilingual Finn (Finnish & Swedish) but also speak Japanese and I am so impressed?? Your Finnish has an insanely natural, nativelike connotation and flow. I believe the difficulty in learning Japanese and Finnish is that both languages are very culturally bound, meaning that the language rotates around the cultures heavily. Also I think for non-native speakers phonetics are not that easy, but you are doing a great job! I'm sure if you lived in Japan for a short while you'd sound native in no time. Based on your Icelandic you'd pick up any other Nordic language too! 👏👏👏

Ciao!

Google Translate says for this Japanese Passage: "Great! Your Japanese is very progressive. It is an inflection of native speaker (Japanese speaker). Intonation etc, detailed details are also sufficiently acquired. Thank you for praising the written language and the beauty of the letters. Japanese is composed of kanji, hiragana and katakana as a written language and can be said to be a very good language for visibility to grasp the context of the sentence from the features of the shape of each letter. Of course, there is a reputation for the spontaneousness of speech sound as well as spoken language. I hope that you will be encouraged more and more in Japanese as you learn various languages from now on. Thank you very much". Since we know that Google Translate is not always accurate for every language, please check with "whiteisland88" to see if this is what Hän ( suomen kieltä ) (he/she in Finnish) did mean.

Just discovered your channel ! Apart from your amazing skills, I noted your comment about the abiliy to read a book in each of the foreign languages that you master. That for me is the ultimate yardstick, and probably the ultimate goal : literature in the language it was written in. Apart from my native language (French) I can read in 3 (and a half…) more languages. For two other languages, I read the translation in French, but with original text on the side. I’m convinced that’s a great way to improve !

It was a great pleasure and fun to watch and listen to and not the least your Finnish was impressive, although I can’t speak it myself in spite of having Finnish roots and having lived in Finland for eight years and now on the Åland Islands for two years, but as you surely know, Swedish is the language here. But I can vouch for your Portuguese since that is one of my languages, after having lived there for a dozen years and being the language my wife and I have in common, although hers is the Brazilian kind. But I stick to my Portuguese from Portugal :) And yes, although I’ve never perfected my German after having learnt it for two years in school, I could at least hear that yours is perfect. Amazing. Ciao Stefano.

My native language is Arabic. I learned English in school first and really liked how it felt to speak a new language, so I became very interested in learning other languages, I tried to learn Italian and Spanish as a kid but for some reason I preferred Spanish and dropped Italian.
Years later I started learning Portuguese and Japanese, I loved Portuguese it felt like it came to me naturally, but unfortunately I'm still struggling a lot with Japanese, however I was happy that I was able to understand most of what you were saying without subtitles. I guess for now, and maybe for the next 10 years my goal is to reach fluency in Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese.

About Japanese! Yes, I agree that listening is most difficult especially if you are a speaker of a Germanic language. It's probably (at least in my experience) because of the sentence structure so our brains have a hard time restructuring how to listen for different parts of the sentence. Especially since when you're still learning you translate sentences.. translating sentence structure can take up much more time and Japanese is spoken very fast with pauses at particles rather than after a word has just been said. It's been an enjoyable struggle though..

    • @linguaEpassione
      @linguaEpassione  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Very good point! In most cases the sentence pattern will be exactly the other way around compared to the other main non-Asian languages, so this requires a lot of "brain work" not only when producing the language but even when listening to it... Anyway, you're right、日本語は超楽しい!

I think your Japanese is near perfect !
I feel there are three main reasons why Japanese is difficult.
Firstly, kanji have two different reading, onyomi and kunyomi.
Secondly, there is a uniquely Japanese expression, "honorific".
Thirdly, the subject is omitted and the description is ambiguous.
I know it must be hard, but please continue to study Japanese !
    I'm cheering you on ! !

I study English and Russian, I studied French and know a bit of a dialect from Albanian.

Your Japanese was very great especially your intonation. I have been raised in Japan and antteded a japanese kindergarten where I learned the language. Also I have to say that your German is brilliant. You do totally sound like a native speaker. Furthermore your French was very nice to the extend that I can assess as a learner. Moreover I am learning Italian at the time and it was very encouraging for me to understand some of the words you said lol :)

The accent is very impressive in most of these languages, as far as I can tell. I am native Romanian speaker but I am also interested in learning foreign languages.

Hello Stefano! I really liked your video, just stumbled upon your channel by chance today and got so happy! What impressed me the most is the selection of languages you learn/ed! Because I can totally relate! I speak English, Finnish and German too besides Russian as mother tongue, and my favourite vieras kieli is absolutely Suomi. Besides I am learning some Farsi because it’s my boyfriends mother language. AND! I have always planned to learn Icelandic and Japanese in future😄 AND I used to dislike French, but recently thought that as well as Deutsch is great for reading classic literature. So keep in touch, I absolutely follow your channel! Good luck and have a nice week!
