Lydia is completely right. I'm recently venturing into the polyglot life and studying my fourth language. I taught myself Japanese, never had a teacher and now I can have conversations and read novels. We are not especially geniuses or anything like that at all -- we are just passionate and we love doing it as a hobby!
I am an English teacher (ha) but I tell all my students to treat me as a SUPPLEMENT, and come to class to ask me questions and go over some things together.
They need to do the work on their own.
Completely right about teaching not being effective -- we are not magicians!

I totaly agree with you. I cannot teach someone any language, I can only make him learn by himself. I am a teacher too, German 🙂

I am also a teacher and i cannot stress out how important it is to also learn by yourself and treat the teacher as a supplement and not like a magician!

Yes, of course I'm practice my listening and my pronunciation every day. I listen to audio with video and at the same time I listen and repeat in order to improve my listening, speaking skills and learn new vocabulary. I practice from house. I use an audiobook free in order to improve my reading and writing skills. In my opinion it's very important to practice a language using whole skills togather.

Great advice! I've only got so far as listening to No. 2, but I paused to say that when I first moved to France in 2000, I didn't have the patience to read anything in French, but I started reading the first Harry Potter book in French, and it was *perfect* because I got so absorbed it in that I couldn't put it down. The words I didn't know I would underline, and then look them up at the end of the chapter (because I didn't want to stop to look them up while I was reading). I ended up reading all the Harry Potter books in French (except for the last one, because it came out when I was back in the States, and I couldn't wait for the translation to come out in French). The Potter books are great because the early ones are simple, and they became increasingly more difficult as they go along. If you persevere, your competence will keep pace with the books!

It's not a question of being taught... I believe a language teacher is a guide and a coach and a mentor. The teacher can facilitate access to methods, tools, strategies. A teacher can teach you HOW to learn. I am an ESL teacher and as years go by I realize this more and more.

Nice! Thanks to the author of the channel! The problem with many people is that they want to take a "magic pill" or get "secret knowledge" and immediately have skills and abilities. However, the truth of life is that knowledge, skills, and abilities do not come by themselves. You can't learn a foreign language without doing anything, without wasting your time and effort, just like you can't learn to ride a bike lying on a comfy couch, listening to lectures and watching videos about "modern methods of learning" on a bike. To really learn something, you have to really practice every day. You're going to fall down while you're learning, and you're going to get bumps - that's normal! The ups and downs of learning are an integral part of our lives. Motivation from success and depression from failure will always be your study companions. However, every student has problems in his or her studies that he or she lacks the knowledge to solve. It can be: poor memorization of words; no progress in language learning; the student can speak, but does not understand speech by ear; misunderstanding of grammar; incorrect pronunciation, etc. Agree that a problem you don't know how to solve is very demotivating. In order to find the answer to our question we have to spend a lot of time to read videos, articles and books by polyglots. In today's world, we have to solve problems as quickly as possible. I don't have time to study and analyze a huge amount of information. My goal is to master the basic knowledge of a foreign language as quickly as possible and already start earning money effectively in the international arena. I settled on the practical guide by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot's Notes: practical tips for learning foreign language". This book is always in my bag. If I have a problem while learning a language, I quickly find the answer in this book. There are many different techniques and tips for learning a foreign language in Polyglot Notes. I have made my own individual schedule and plan for language learning. Now I know what I am going to study, how I am going to study, when I am going to study and what results I am going to achieve. No problem could stop me! With an effective language learning plan my professional skills are more and more in demand internationally every day. Friends, don't stop there! Everyone has talents that millions of people around the world need! Learn the language and make your ideas and dreams come true! Thanks to the author of the channel for the informative and useful video! Your videos motivate me.

I guess with the correct methodology, acquiring your target language(s) with a native speaker tutor definitely helps. I learned Spanish & Brazilian Portuguese with TPRS tutors, through storytelling and lots & lots of arts & illustrations :)

When I read it in English I used the shadowing method (I am German). But the Spanish pronunciation is closer to the written word. I may start doing that when all the books are through though.
I used duolingo to pick up my school Spanish after not having used it for five years. After a month I was comfortable reading Harry Potter and stoped doing Spanish on duo, switching it for Russian. Now, 117 days after starting duo, I feel conversational in Spanish. My Russian skills is at around 4% on their way to conversational, with 45 of the necessary 1100h.

It was great to listen to you both speaking, I've noticed a mistake when the pretty girl spoke, she said " much "MORE" easier, but that's ok everybody makes mistakes. I've really loved listening to you both! Next language I'll learn is Russian then others like Dutch Arabic, and so on!

Thank you, Lydia. You saved me from feeling I HAD to marry a lady whose native language was Mandarin Chinese by just studying it myself withOUT needing a native-Mandarin-speaking wife to teach me it ! I already speak it, but not anywhere nearly as well as English. I noticed you speak French, Spanish, and German very well and since you're an conference interpreter for German, I will now write in German and other languages we speak because my German, French, and Spanish are about equal. So without using a language translator or a person for any of the languages I'm about to write in, here goes by changing my language keyboards: Nächste Monat reise ich nach Ungarn zu eine akupunctur Konferenz der Ohr in Budapest und Deutschland. ( Next month I'm traveling to Hungary for an Ear Acupuncture Conference in Budapest and Lindenfels, Germany from Frankfurt. ) Szeretnék magyarul valakivel gyakarolni. ( I would like to practice Hungarian with someone. Bonege, Lydia ! ( Oh. You told us you also speak Esperanto. Super, Lydia ! ( Esperanto is my favorite language. ) I can speak Swedish about as well. Next is Japanese. Then my Dutch and Italian are about equal. Finally are Russian and ASL ( American Sign Language ) and I can say smatterings of things in other languages. ( I would like to speak Swedish with someone. )
( I studied Japanese. I forgot it. )
I hope you will meet in Las Vegas some day so that I can drive to the polyglot meeting. Joe Wu ( manytonguesman at gee male )

what she said about repetition while reading is totally true. I learned english the same way although via fanfictions. If books are too difficult at the beginning i suggest fanfictions (HP for example) which usually aren't written in an overly complicated way so they are easier to understand ^^

    God save the internet!!!

Daniel sort of put her Slav Sign Language. I've heard others do similar. Any Sign Language is actually verbal because you have to interpret or translate it back and forth to and from a spoken language. It also involves a lot of facial expressions and emphasis that verbal speech may not accentuate to the same degree. And she could interpret or translate it into many different languages, being a polyglot. Also, both of you saying language schools do not work is nowhere near correct. The Foreign Language Institute gives the time frames for English speakers to learn different languages. And most don't take anywhere near two years. Of course, we are talking about five hours per day, five days a week. Intensive, legitimate language immersion schools are very effective and efficient.

    Lydia,
Hi! I have been following you. Your method seems to be very effective. Congrats for knowing a few languages. I agree partially with you when you say Spanish sounds great; but that depends on who speaks Spanish. Mexicans, Dominicans and some people from Central America speak it horribly bad. To me, Italian is the sweetest of all languages; and Spanish is just the most balanced-one when it comes to combinig vocals-consonants; it is perfect for poetry & really sonorous and elegant. Yet English is perfect for prose. And French and Greek are great too.
    My best regards,
    Orlando

Actually, Mexicans speak Spanish correctly. After Spaniards, Mexicans have the clearest pronunciation. In fact, many Spanish learners say that Mexican Spanish is the easiest to understand.Maybe you meant that you didn't like their accent, which is diffetent from speaking bad,Tha's just a matter of taste.
