    I've got one coming from Amazon I picked up cheap. Did worry about battery replacement as I've seen some complaints about battery life. Was looking for info on replacement cost when I came upon this little gem of a video. Surely appreciate it. I've saved it for future use. Almost would like to just go ahead on put in the better battery, nice upgrade. :)

    I have a problem with the battery. Its useful life is at the end. I looked for a new replacement battery on the Digikey website but it seems that Glob Tek no longer manufactures them.
    Is there a compatible third-party battery for the Flir Scout TK camera?
    So far I haven't found another battery.

      Tie together single 18650 cell and a 1S BMS , encapsulate it and you SHOULD be set. Safely cannibalize your existing connector from the old cell. I have not tried doing such but that is what the Globtech cell is. Thanks for watching !

    Awesome straight to the point video ! Going to try it .
    Amazon has tkx scout for 300 bucks that's half the price of the one you had in this video .
    I thought they were the same as the tk but the added x meant it was extended battery life ?
    Are you familiar with the tkx ? Just wondering why it is half the price

    • @survivalcomms
      @survivalcomms  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you ! The TKX has a higher resolution sensor than the TK and it actually has some magnification ability as well. The battery life is shorter by 25 percent however.

    • @survivalcomms
      @survivalcomms  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There is some sort of parasitic drain going on. First are all of the controls and the device working well ? set the clock and power the device on and off a few times and check the clock. If it passes those tests we need to determine if the battery and its little management board is at fault (likely) or if the the is a problem in the device itself. Fully charge the battery open the device and remove the battery. Measure the voltage and record it. If you say it is self discharged over 5 days check the voltage after 5 days and record that. During this test also monitor the battery temperature and I would keep it in a safe location while performing this test. If the battery fails this test contact digikey and tell them the battery is defective. If the battery passes let me know and we will go further down the rabbit hole.

    Does anyone know if the rest of their models can be likewise serviced? Common sense suggests so, but then common sense suggests it should be straightforward to replace a battery in the first place. Aside from planned obsolescence, I see no reason they shouldn't be. I don't for a moment believe it's a safety issue. Anyone competent enough to use an oven is probably competent enough to handle a lithium ion battery, and if they're so concerned they could design any given product to only take the slightly longer fused batteries. I'm inclined to avoid the product just on general principles. Some manufacturers (apple comes to mind) are so obnoxious that they've started to glue the whole mess together, just to make the consumer's grief complete.

    • @survivalcomms
      @survivalcomms  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I'm not sure if they can be changed out as easily but it is possible. That's why I make videos like this to save tech from becoming ewaste. Thanks for watching !

    • @AndrewJackson1841
      @AndrewJackson1841 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm glad it worked out for you in this instance, but consumers shouldn't put up with planned obsolescence in the first place. Any consumer would prefer a product that can be easily serviced and which uses off-the-shelf components, but it's sometimes hard to even find a product that does. This seems to indicate a tacit understanding among manufacturers that consumer products should deter repair and service. I can't see any real solution besides a law or laws that discourage or prohibit planned obsolescence. I see you're also a radio enthusiast. Suppose you want a new handheld transceiver that takes standard batteries (cr123,18650, etc.). That's pretty reasonable, no? Maybe there are HAM radios on the market that do take standard batteries, but it seems like most of the major brands do not. I did a cursory search and found nothing, aside from a reddit post assuring the reader no such thing exists. Isn't that bizarre? Yet this is hardly the worst example, amateur radios tend not to discourage serviceability to nearly the same degree as other consumer electronics and appliances. At the very least people have to start calling it what it is, i.e. planned obsolescence, an attempt to defraud the consumer.

    • @AndrewJackson1841
      @AndrewJackson1841 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And it's not as though so many companies are using proprietary or difficult-to-service designs for lack of standardized components or because off-the-shelf components wouldn't suit the purpose. They're using standardized, off-the-shelf components, benefiting from economy of scale but then making deliberate design choices to withhold this same efficiency and economy from the consumer. It is essentially fraud.

    • @AndrewJackson1841
      @AndrewJackson1841 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I should mention that I don't anticipate the issue of planned obsolescence to gain much traction on youtube, being a probable repellent of potential sponsors. People should talk about it here anyway, but anyone truly concerned should probably raise the issue elsewhere as well before the internet becomes nothing more than favorable product reviews and all links lead to amazon.

    • @AndrewJackson1841
      @AndrewJackson1841 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Incidentally I have a Yaesu HT, which takes a yaesu battery lithium-ion pack. They sell a 2xAA battery pack and warn that it should only be used with alkalines, yielding a pitiful 0.3w maximum tx power. I've long been tempted to try a couple 14500s. In series they would achieve the same nominal voltage as the lithium ion pack which has nearly the same dimensions and which I suspect might contain a couple of 14500s. I imagine it would only be a problem with the AA pack if its internal wiring were too thin to handle the higher current or contains any fuses that aren't rated for it, but I might give it a shot and stress test with 5w tx power anyway. Ten to one it would be fine. @@survivalcomms

    Help! My TK Scout failed!
    Initially, the image started to fade/blur, followed by battery not charging. Now the unit won't turn on and the light won't illuminate when set to charge. I removed the battery, hooked up USB/external battery pack and still nothing. Bought it online brand new about 2 years ago. It's never been dropped or gotten wet. For $600, I'd expect more hours of use. If anyone knows how to troubleshoot one of these, I'd really appreciate the help.

    • @survivalcomms
      @survivalcomms  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If it wouldnt run with the external pack and the internal cell still connected you have more than a battery problem. You might bypass the USB and go straight to the batt output leads with a regulated power supply and see if it will energize the device. If it doesn't remove power and start checking the ribbon cables.
