  • AskWoodMan.com/ This is the third video in my complete sharpening series. In this series I will use the following tools and machines: Makita 9820 electric water stone with an after market sharpening jig, Bosch belt sander, Porter Cable belt sander, Mitutoyo combination square, General Sharpening Jig, DMT Diamond Stones, and various chisels, plane irons and scrapers.
This third video shows how to free hand rough grind chisels on the Makita Sharpening Stone. The reason I chose to free hand grind these chisels is because the knives have shorten over 25 years of sharpening and no longer reach the stone from the jig. When free handing it's even more crucial to continually check your bevel angle and squareness.
This video is just one in the series where Allan Little shows all his sharpening techniques that he has refined in the last 25 plus years to attain the sharpest chisels, plane irons and scrapers. This series will show not only how to hone and sharpen using the diamond stones, but also how to grind on the Makita 9820 course wheel as well as belt sanders. This series ends with chisels, plane irons and scraper demonstrations.

@ironlionkalo They are Bahco Ergo Chisels. They came out in the mid 80's but did not catch on so Bahco discontinued them. They are the greatest. The sole of chisel will lie on the flat without the handle interfering. Fantastic for paring into spaces other chisels can't get. They are like a handled chisel plane or a mini socket slick. You probably noticed how thick the cross section of the blade is. They are the best mortise chisels. I have chopped thousands of mortises with them.

@spelunkerd No it is Mitutoyo. I use metric measurement a lot. Calculations are easier and measuring and marking just seem more logical. So I have that 40cm blade, a 24" blade and a 12" blade and two other square heads. All of the blades, square heads, the protractor head, and there is a dividing head also, are all interchangeable. When I bought my combo set in 1986 I looked at Starrett, but I liked the finish and feel of the Mitutoyo a little better. Perfect in every way is not exaggerating.

@attainableapex I have used mineral oil for a long time. The kind you can buy at the grocery store. Wax is not allowed in my shop. It is nothing more than a contaminate in my opinion. The stone stays pretty flat just buy the rotational nature of the machines design. The green wheel on the Makita 9820 is for rough grinding and rapid yet controlled steel removal. Thanks for watching. Allan

@azintrepid1 I did not expect many people to have that Makita 9820 that is why in some later videos I show reestablishing the bevel with a belt sander. A belt sander works well if care is taken to not overheat your edge.

I see that your protractor has metric gradations. Is that a Starrett combination square and protractor?

what do you put on your chisels and irons to keep them from rusting.
i use a good paste wax on my irons and chisels right now but on the chisels its a little annoying because whenever i touch them up i have to rebuff it.
also how do you keep that stone flat
