    I watched a program on BBC in which they explained how turmeric can play a role in gene methylation. Specifically it targeted genes that are associated with asthma, depression and eczema. However, they also found that the way turmeric is prepared prior to ingestion also matters. They came to the conclusion that you probably should mix it with oil and add it to your food, just like the Indians do in their cooking. This apparently is because the compounds in turmeric responsible for the health benefits are liposoluble. This can also explain why turmeric capsules probably don't do much to your health.

    Personal experience- Per doctor's order I can no longer take nsaids (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, etc) after my heart attack. Without them I was in constant substantial pain. I hurt so much I was about to disregard my cardiologists restrictions. After researching natural pain relievers; I began taking turmeric (720 mg) and ginger capsules (540 mg) at least once a day, sometimes twice a day. I no longer (literally) roll out of bed, struggle to my feet, and hobble about aching all day. Marvelous.

      BOB SANCHEZ I suspect the anti inflammatory compounds are coming from the ginger imho

    • @Zackyzic
      @Zackyzic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      BOB SANCHEZ Try and understand how a typical "tadka" is made in indian cuisine. We use groundnut oil, sesame seeds, a little bit of chilly, onion and turmeric together to create our "tadka" in which we cook curries or vegetables. We also add additional spices to our food such as chilli powder, pepper, cinnamon, cloves, etc. Try doing some research on cuisine made using all these ingredients. Try understanding how Ayurveda actually works. It doesn't take isolated compounds, but it creates effective herbal remedies by utilising whole components. Turmeric isn't consumed raw usually. I don't get why scientists in the west perform such narrow studies on holistic remedies which have proven to be helpful for thousands of years

    • @TheIRISHredhead
      @TheIRISHredhead 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's because ginger is a pain reliever. Not Turmeric

    • @MRony
      @MRony 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheIRISHredhead turmeric is a anti inflammatory agent. So combining the two can and probably does have the effect this person desires. For example, if you have inflammatory pain, you wouldn't take Tylenol, as it is only a pain reliever. You would take an Nsaid like advil or aleve because it will reduce inflammation and reduce pain.

    In my experience with tumeric (called simply "curcuma" in latin america), it is a great anti-inflamatory agent and it also helps with upset stomach when consumed as tea (6-10 gr/Litre), however, it's not medicine so don't expect it to heal a sore joint right away, it can take from 2 to 5 days (a cup a day) and while time-wise worse than pharmaceutical meds, it actually solves the problem rather than just masking the symptoms. Other then that, I've found no benefits outside of the "home remedy" spectrum.

    It's a great supplement for people with IBS. It's proven on rats that it helps with abnormal intestinal contractions. And as recent studies show connection between depression/anxiety and microbiome in the guts, there is also recent one showing that turmeric made rats do better on behavioral tests. As a person with IBS, arthritis, anxiety and other weird autoinflammatory symptoms I'm SURE its all connected and it sounds totally possible that curcumin helps with digestion and mood if there are different studies proving that separately! In my opinion IBS is just a part of some weird and extremely complex disease (like my mum was diagnosed with SAPHO in her late 50, struggling with arthritis and poor digestion her whole life and suddenly developing symptoms of such a rare incurable, unknown autoinflammatory disease.) so incorporating turmeric and other supplements and "cures" for IBS in your diet is totally worth it since we don't know exactly whyyyyyy our guts are like that!
    Sorry, had to mention all this, cause you made this video in response to new trend, for ppl looking for a cure for everything in one thing. While there are ppl who are not looking for miracles but still could get discouraged by this video.

      They are simply responding to the most common claim, which is that it is a superfood and an antioxidant. And do you have the citations for studies showing that turmeric powder (not pure curcumin), on it's own is a "VERY effective" anti-inflammatory? I'd like to read it. Studies that show that curcumin powder has an effect have nothing to do with turmeric, as you wouldn't be able to consume enough actual turmeric to hit the dose of pure curcumin powder they use in those studies. (Usually somewhere between 2000 mg and 20,000 mg)

      most people dont know that unless they add a good bit of black pepper for the piperine compound in the pepper to their Tumeric or Curcumin supplements, the Curcumin will for the most part just pass through you because curcumin by itself has a low bioavailability.
      Turmeric and black pepper each have health benefits, due to the compounds curcumin and piperine. As piperine enhances curcumin absorption in the body by up to 2,000%, combining the spices magnifies their effects. They may reduce inflammation and improve digestion, particularly in supplement form

    I consume quite large quantity of turmeric (est. 10 - 25g per large meal - est. 1kg total + side dish) and I've never noticed any yellow tinted excrements. I consume it mostly because I like the taste, but I've noticed that it also helps me manage allergy attacks, asthma and calm my digestion - probably because the anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric compounds. I always use turmeric powder by heating it in oil until it starts bubbling. Curcumin is not water soluble so it needs to be dissolved in oil to be absorbed by your body. So I am very skeptical about the studies which use turmeric or curcumin without dissolving it in oil. Also I would be very skeptical about any effects when you just sprinkle turmeric on something. I think that people from particular asian cultures have to be screaming: "Why the hell would you use it that way?", since it's know to have adverse affects (bowel irritation instead of anti-inflammatory effects) when used without cooking in oil.

    Turmeric milk is such a refreshing beverage when prepared with actual turmeric and all the other spices. I mix a few tablespoons of it into a chai latte powder, and add ground pepper, curry powder, mixed spice, pepper, cardamom, and a good amount of salt. There's just something about the heat of all those flavours, it's super invigorating, all science aside.

    I use Turmeric and black pepper as an anti inflammatory. I can't take traditional anti inflammatories due to NAFLD. I was in pretty bad shape before I found out Turmeric with a small amount of black pepper worked. My skin lesions started drying up and when I become short of breath due to exertion causing inflammation, I take one capsule and start feeling relief within a few minutes.
    I get the generic drug store brand. Its not very expensive and it relieves the pain without damaging my already damaged liver.

    It does all sort of things and influences a lot of biological processes that could be beneficial for your health.
    But the concentrations you get are way too low, has quite poor bio availability and effects vary from tissue to tissue.
    It certainly can be beneficial, but it probably act is concert with millions of other compounds in your food
