The phrase “when my ship comes in” basically means when fortune turns your way. If your ship is not coming in, you’re pretty well down on your luck.

Toronto-based, British expat, Terry Brown, produced every album for Rush from 1975 to 1983. Thereafter, the band sought out different producers to keep up with their ever-evolving sound. His very first professional gig, as engineer, was in 1967 for the Jimi Hendrix Experience. He had a very long list of albums produced after his time with Rush ended.

You are my favorite reaction guru. You feel the music and you understand it. If you do RUSH again, make sure it's a live video/recording if possible. That's when they are at their best and most amazing. It's ok for you to stop the video when you want and react, that's part of the fun. You seem like a great dude with a good moral compass. I spent 5 years playing drums in a praise band until my back collapsed and haven't been able to play since. Some of the most amazing Rush is from their last album Clockwork Angels just prior to Neil Pearts death. They bring in a string section and the music is amazing. God Bless you and yours.

Neil wrote the the vast majority of their lyrics, including this song. Geddy and Alex would write and arrange the music, and the 3 of them would together bring the songs to life. A truly colabaritvie effort. You are correct in your assessment of the songs meaning. When Neil was 18 or 19 he left Canada and went to London to try to break into the music scene there. He spent nearkt two years playing with different bands and one night or short term gigs but never was able to "Make It". "His ship never came in" so after nearly 2 years he went back home to Canada went to work in his father's store and played part time for different local band. After a few months he was asked to try out to be the new Drummer for RUSH...........When their original drummer John Rutsey, had to drop out because of health reasons. It was a very fast process as they had just released their first Album Self titled RUSH and where due to start touring in less than a month. So it was quite a RUSHED process (pun intended). So Neil joined the band and the rest is history! An inside joke amongst the guys is that they called Neil "The New Guy" for the next 45 years.

  • @RushFanatic87

Even more impressive is they recorded this album in something like 7 days. They were 22-23 years old, gelling as a new band, and writing/recording very intricate stuff.
Also, this was a song Neil had been working on for a while when he joined Rush. It’s his feelings about when he went away to London for a year or two trying to make it big in the burgeoning blues rock scene there. He played with several bands but couldn’t ever break through, so he found his way back home to St. Catharines, Ontario, working for his dad at a farm equipment dealership and playing in a local band on the side.

Geddy was born in July 1953, Alex in August 1953 and Neil in September of 1952. This album was released in February of 1975 when Geddy and Alex were still 21 and Neil was 22. Neil was in the band less than 7 months at this point.

  • @BattleHardenedGolfClashReplays

There's a saying - "My ship has come in", meaning I'm lucky, I'm blessed. The ship that has come in is an unexpected blessing.
In the song, the person's ship has NOT come in. So, they take it upon themselves to leave in search of that blessing. Leaving by "night" describes them leaving at a time they have determined, not when that lucky ship has arrived allowing them to leave during the day.
Geddy & Alex wrote the music. Neil wrote the lyrics. When all 3 would come together, Neil composed his drum part to the music that had been written.
Also, Neil gave Geddy the leeway to change his lyrics to a cadence where he could sing them. Also where Geddy could "feel" what he was singing emotionally.
Thanks for your reaction. I love your insight into Rush's music. To me, your insights are spot on nearly 100% of the time!

This was on their second album, the first with Neil’s, so he was definitely making his presence known. I love how much melody Geddy takes in his bass lines while still holding down the bottom end. A lot of his writing style was influenced by being a three-piece, especially at this early point without any synths. On stage it was just guitar, bass, and drums, so lost of space to fill. Anthem is the first track on the album, and it’s worth a listen because Neil is a monster! Cheers!
P.S. - Always impressed with your ability to play by ear, CB!

The ship he was waiting for to come in was to find a band to make use of his talents, while he was in the UK. That ship didn't come in, so he had to try something else. Came back to Canada, went to work at his father's business, did a little playing with JR Flood, and got auditioned to replace John Rutsey.

For the most part, the song-writing process for Rush was as follows:
    - Neil goes off to write lyrics.
    - Geddy AND Alex jam together to come up with the music.
    - Neil gives Geddy his rough drafts of the lyrics and Geddy shares his thoughts and feelings with Neil about each.
    - Neil goes back to redrafting (if necessary.
    - At the same time, Alex and Geddy share their draft music with Neil, so that all can try to match lyrics to music.
    - This iterative process continues until they're ready to record.
Rush will never put out another album because - unlike most groups - their writing process didn't lead to leftover or orphaned songs.

This song was written by Neil, (as with most Rush lyrics) based on his experience moving to London as a teenager, to try to become a professional musician. Not achieving success he returned to Canada and shortly after was asked to audition for Rush. The Rest is history.
This song is from the second Rush album, and first featuring Neil as the band's drummer. It is also the first album featuring producer Terry Brown from start to finish. Terry's brilliance is evident on the studio recordings, really enhancing the band's sound.

Now we just got to get you to do some 80s deeper cuts. I fell down your rabbit hole a few weeks ago working on one of my cars and enjoyed your reviews because you really get them. Antonio submit 80 stuff just because well I don't know because I do like this stuff but I love all of their career. Seems like a lot of this gets overlooked. There's so many more besides these and I'm going to enjoy you exploring their entire career which I'm sure you will. Sounds like you really fell down the rabbit hole for them. My suggestions for the mid too late 80s would be Mystic rhythms, afterimage, the enemy within, between the wheels, Force 10, Turn the Page, almost anything from Presto, but I suggest the Pass, Scars or available light which I think displays one of Getty's finest vocals in his career. I'm sure you'll find most of these and more at some point. Enjoy!

So, it’s sort of funny… I’ve been on board with the guys since the 80’s but it’s only been recently that I’ve been giving their early catalogue the credit it deserves. This really was the first time I truly followed the words and thought about them, so thanks for that.
I’ve said as much in another post that it’s been a joy watching you fall in love with them, and this vid was no exception. Again, because as a Rush fan I feel obligated to put in my two cents, I suggest Headlong Flight off Clockwork Angels as a future reaction. There’s a vid with lyrics of the studio track floating around that’s quite good. The live versions are good too, but the production of the album is just spectacular and is worth hearing. I haven’t read many other comments, but I’m sure many folks have also suggested The Garden off the same album, also a fantastic track worth checking out. Please do Headlong Flight first… the guys were firing on all eight cylinders, with a nitro boost. Pretty sure it’ll leave you in a state of “Whoa… what did I just hear?” 😂
    Be well, bro!

I respect early Rush but I never go back to it. For me the sweet spot is from 1980 to 1989, when Geddy Lee's voice is at its best and they started to sound like themselves and not a blend of Led Zepplin, Yes and some of their other influences. Still love Hemispheres and think it's one of their best but I'm not tempted to go back to listen to earlier records. Permanent waves, Moving Pictures, Signals, Grace under Pressure, Power Windows, Hold your fire and Presto. The music is always amazing but the voice is at its best on these record. I Also love Counterparts and the Vapour Trail (Remixed & Remastered)and Clockwork Angels is great musically but the voice.... Sounds like grandpa Simpson in the high registry.

I highly suggest you check out dinner with Rush. This will give you a really good feeling for their personalities. 😂

If you liked "Fly By Night," off the same album you will enjoy "Anthem" and "Beneath, Between & Behind," "Best I Can," and the prog epic, "By-Tor and the Snow Dog."

Glad you enjoyed your vacation here in Florida. I’m writing this from my “birdcage,” while watching some much needed rain. Neil wrote most of the lyrics, while Geddy and Alex wrote the music. Once Neil had penned the lyrics, he would give them to Geddy to try out. Ged would then tweek them as needed. Sometimes he would only like a single line and Neil would go back and build on that. Geddy always needed to feel the lyrics in order to be comfortable singing them.

This is another one of Neil's autobiographical songs. It's based on Neil's experience as a young musician when he left Canada to try his luck with the music scene in England. He wrote several songs about that era.

Watch "Dinner With RUSH", if you want to know how Geddy, Alex, & Neil (Dirk, Lerxst, & Pratt) speak during a normal conversation! Entertaining!

Geddy Lee is probably one of the few bassists out there who took the bass and turned it into a lead instrument.

Very early RUSH. Nice little song that has a place in hearts of Lifer RUSH fans. NOT the most impressive. It wouldn't be high on my list to impress people NEW to RUSH, but it's fun and has a place in their History. This is also EARLY NEIL lyrics. I don't know how much lyric writing he did before RUSH, but you can see him quickly evolve through their albums.

good reaction, as a Floridian for most of my life its super hot, a heatwave atm. yeah fly by night the concept its not working, leave town, follow a new dream good song, but don't do it in the daytime like in Florida right now lol. this is early rush 1st lp with Neil Peart started playing on. this was in 1974 or 1975. try their hemispheres lp major growth development still in the late seventies mostly after 2112 they got the power from above lol, well wishes

If you are looking for a new artist to check out, I suggest you look at Jeff Healey. His performance of See The Light on Night Music from 1988 with studio musicians Marcus Miller and Omar Hakim, along with Dr John, will blow you away.. Or check out his cover of Albert King's "As The Years Go Passing By" at the Stuttgart Jazz Festival in 1995 is epic.
