I'm a fan of hearing the studio version of all Rush songs first for the fidelity and audio quality and then going back and watching them live to see how incredible they are at reproducing the studio sound on stage. They are amazing live! So, YYZ in Rio is a MUST watch but I'd HIGHLY RECOMMEND the studio version first.
No need to signal, Geddy and Alex have been playing together since grade school, Neil came later and added his pure genius to the song writing, impeccable drum skills which were unmatched to this day and the rest is history. Geddy actually recently published a book about bass guitar, because apparently he has become one of the foremost experts on rare basses and the history and evolution of the bass guitar. He decided to channel his compulsion to collect rare basses into writing a book about them for bass nerds! Geddy is one of the greatest in rock, other top contentenders: Chris Squire from YES, Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Paul Jones from Led Zep.. This song is completely arranged, the only improvisation going on is Alex's main solo. The title means 'Strange House' and the piece was inspired by a series of nightmares that Alex had. Each section has a brief title that characterises the dream segment. The abrupt end makes me think of waking up suddenly, as it usually happens when waking from a nightmare, Lol!!
Anyone who tells you they don't read music is deluded. They are virtuosos, and extremely well trained. They completely understand their compositions, nothing is "accidental".
In one of his interviews after Neil passed, Geddy called him a "fucking monster musician." In reality all three were fucking monster musicians! Geddy and Alex were best friends since, like 7th grade or so. Neil replaced the original drummer after one album with John Rutsey, so he was considered "the new guy.". There is no weak leg on this tripod.

My friend's brother stayed in line all night & got us 2nd row right in front of Alex. $10. It may have cost $12.50 (don't remember), but he only made me pay $10. Pat Travers sat in front of us. Such a great memory!
This is Rush magnus opus. The song and all 3 members are at their highest level. Alex goes from a weeping violin to firecrackers on the fret, Geddy banging bass keyboard and pedals, w Neil giving another lesson on the skins. Doesn't get any better than this - caviar and Rolex watch out! 🔥

My favorite band of all time, I was lucky enough to see them live 13 times and every time it was such an incredible experience. It was like watching three virtuoso's performing in perfect synchronicity! Most shows where in Las Vegas, but I also got to see them a a couple of times in Phoenix, once in Grand Rapids Michigan and Once at the Red Rocks..a few years later while getting my first Rush Tattoo I had one of the heaviest mind blowing experiences of my life.

A Lerxst in Wonderland V. Monsters! VI. Danforth and Pape VII. The Waltz of the Shreves VIII. Never turn your back on a Monster! IX. Monsters! (Reprise) X. Strangiato Theme (Reprise) XI. A Farewell to Thing Each segment is part of a different dream or nightmare - Lerxst is Alex's nickname - Pratt was Neil and Dirk is Geddy. You may see references to Lerxt, Pratt and Dirk at times - it is just what the guys called themselves in the band.
The pure synchronicity of Rush is what makes them special to me. So, a few things to know: This piece is based on Alex Lifeson deciding he wanted to express in music a period of his life when he was beset by very strange nighjtmares. Thus the title, "the strage village". This is also why he is featured much more prominently with his guitar than either of the other two. Geddy's bass takes no back seat, my man, it's pounding away throughout this number like John Bonham's kicks. But the song is Alex's story, so he gets the front. This band composes all of their music as if writing an orchestral symphony; no note is improvised, and the beat is so well rehearsed that it's locked in before you ever get to see it. For another example of this, check out YYZ, another instrumental with insane synchronicity.

Great reaction Church Man!! They wrote and released album “Hemishperes” in 1978. They were in their mid 20’s! This album nearly broke them! They were so musically ambitious that they have said they actually wrote music beyond their capabilities! They usually recorded live off the floor in 4 or 5 takes (rehearsed during sound checks while touring)! They recorded their whole 2nd album in 10 days. They attempted to record this song off the floor and were determined to do in 1 take, after 10 days, they finally had to admit defeat and record it in 3 parts! It took them nearly 3 months to record this album with only 1 day off! They worked and practiced this song for months after that until they could go out and record this video LIVE (with no audience) in 1 take! (They refused to do any song that they could not perform live.. and this was 1978) Geddy says they just do it over and over and over again until it’s muscle memory! They connect so well, they just know how to keep it on the rails, but they worked super hard for it! After this album, (which only has 4 songs on it) they swore that they would never put themselves in such a stressful, position again! It was putting them in a bad place ! So the next album “Permannt Waves” has a very different vibe! Lovin the journey, man! I recommend your next one be “Leave That Thing Alone” live from the Time Machine Tour! When you compose or learn a song, and if you have natural rhythm, you can feel and instinctively know where you are by what you are playing. I can play along with this without any trouble. It's all about knowing the layout etc.
Hi Dude... These are Rush... Each part is composed and executed, and 'aligned' by an authentic Drum Machine named Neil Peart, the 'Professor'... They do not need to nod, they always trained each song for perfection... Welcome to Rush world...
Fun fact about La Villa... They struggled to record it for the album, so they did it in 3 parts and edited it together. Then to record this video, they refused to fake playing... So they played it... this is the first take.
I noted this point above. Geddy told the story on his book tour. They hadn't been able to complete this in one take prior to this in the studio. They didn't do anything special, but this time it just clicked and they knocked it out in their first take...
They stopped at take 42 to try and get it all. Hemispheres was a progressive rock peak, but it broke them mentally in a way that brought in the eventual departure from the longer pieces.
Hemispheres was an album were the guys wrote songs that were at or beyond the edge of their capabilities. The story about them struggling and then failing to record it in one take demonstrates this. However, they ended up playing it time and time again live with perfection. This shows that yeah they were awesome on Fly By Night, Caress, 2112, etc, but they were still growing as musicians by leaps and bounds.

Great reaction! The expression on your face is the same one I had the first time I heard them in the early 70's. It says, "How the hell are they doing that?" Said like a leprechaun "Slappin' da bass, man." Rush has some fantastic songs with Bass solos. I won't list them because many have already done that. But even when Geddy is playing rhythm, he's playing a solo. That's half the fun of listening to them. You could be listening to any of their songs and Geddy is there in the background doing the most amazing things.

Fun fact - Rush struggled to record this track in the studio and finally decided to lay it down in two takes. When the time came to record this video they were really surprised that they were able to do it in only one go.

Re-watch... watch their feet... - all the sounds they create with their feet is genius on its own. When their feet are better than you will ever be..... Damn.... you know you are watching musical magicians.
Any Rush fan can tell you... you experience whole different songs when you focus on just one thing. As a bass player, I would expect you to hear the bass first. But you really need to listen many times before the lyrics come into focus, especially as a musician, and the virtuosity always overpowers the words. Truthfully that is why we are lifetime fans... you can listen over and over and over always finding new and amazing things in every song. Discovering lyrics is just a step in falling down the Rush rabbit hole.
Great point about getting lost in any one aspect of their music. I get lost focusing on how Geddy Lee manipulates his voice and enunciates the words to match his bass and tell the story.
Excellent reaction, and I know you will love "Working man live in Cleveland" and "Freewill", great songs with a more prominent bass. I will also tell you that Geedy Lee changed his professional contract to a bass that I believe disappeared and "Steinberg" and then to the Fender Jazz Bass. Another point to highlight is that in the drumming community it was said "A drummer uses a metronome and The metronome uses Niel Peart". Again great reaction and follows Rush. Blessings

Beside the tone, the best thing for me was the neck as I prefer a flatter neck. A BC Rich Mocking bird is nice bass as well. @@BatFang-s8yAlex first formed the band in 1968. I think they've been stable as a 3-piece containing Alex and Geddy since 1972, with Neil Peart replacing John Rutsy as drummer in 1974 after Rutsy tore up the lyrics for the first album the day they went in to record it!
They each have their own unique cues to help each other out. They are known for being notoriously over rehearsed when it comes to the live show AND it’s like they have a special kind of relationship with each other and can basically telepathically communicate and react to the other person in a situation that might make other bands train wreck into stopping mid song and starting over, where they look at each other and keep going how they need to till the other one gets back in sync with them🤯I’ve seen it happen live when Alex broke a string heading into the solo of ‘Closer to the Heart’ and Geddy and Neil double backed a few seconds, together in unison, while Alex literally threw his guitar to one guy (stagehand) as his tech was running up with the replacement for him, and it was like maybe 3-5 seconds and if you blinked or looked down right then you would have missed it and never known it happened.👌👍🥇🇨🇦🎼🎸🥁🎤🎹

I was fortunate to see RUSH 6 times live, from late 1974 & last time in 1981. I am glad to see so many live concerts from them later in their 40+ year career. With 19 studio albums in their catalog, enjoy the ride!!!
No lyrics, the music is the lyrics. The song is based on some crazy dream Alex had. Every movement in the song is reflecting a person going to sleep, dreaming, having a nightmare, and waking up. That's my interpretation of the song. The section called "Monsters" is the nightmare portion of the song but not a traditional nightmare (scary), think along the lines on Monsters Inc. The transition after the monster section is supposed to reflect a big band, love Neils drums in this section. Also Alex guitar solo sounds like the horn section in a big band. Alex first main solo at the beginning of the song reflects a person dreaming. Geddy is my favorite bass player. He has so many bass lines that are absolutely killer. One of my favorite lines is from Digital Man, just love the groove and melody. Two Geddy solos that that are fan favorites is Leave that Thing Alone from the Time Machine Tour and Malignant Narcissism from Snakes and Arrows tour. A must see is Working Man live in Cleveland, what is killer is when you see Alex and Geddy solo with Neil holding it down.

In my opinion this is Alex Lifeson's finest guitar performance.. One can argue about his "best", lots of contenders in their catalogue but this is Mr Lifeson at his finest...
Rush has been my favorite band since 1980. I am so enthused to see another gospel team member find this band! If you want to hear more of this bands 40 year career and the evolving styles they used, or the focus you mentioned in Geddy’s bass playing just listen to the comments. All Rush fans seem to be UBER fans, almost super fans. I will suggest three things to you: listen to 2112 next, listen to my favorite 3 recordings in a row- from the album Exit Stage Left Broons Bane, The Trees, and Jacob’s Ladder. Also, please note that Neil Peart is also the lyricist and that the this band is, in my humble opinion, among the greatest greatest collections of musicians ever put together. The Professor (drums) is arguably recognized as the GOAT for rock drummers while Geddy is also arguably the best (at least in the top 2 or3) bassists in rock. Sadly, most fans feel that while Alex Lifeson, the lead guitarist is among the top 3 to 5 guitarists of all time, critics don’t agree. Anyway enjoy your Rush journey!!! “Leave That Thing Alone” for crazy bass focus, and “the Garden” and so many more for incredible lyrics and stories.

Damn, you’re starting at the top with some of their strongest songs! Good thing they have a deep catalog. 2112 is an important number in your future. The simplest way to describe them is special. RUSH was special. Live? Forget about it! Phenomenal live band! I was fortunate enough to see 18 different tours over the decades. RUSH night was always special and a different vibe from other Rock concerts. No dummies in a RUSH crowd. You definitely need the lyrics with these guys. In the early days of Rush, Geddy played strictly only a Rickenbacker 4001. He didn’t begin switching between that and the Jazz bass until Permeant Waves and Moving Pictures in 1980 to 1981. He would later play pretty much only the Jazz bass, but he did have a short period using a Steinberger and then Wal basses in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He has one of the largest bass collections in the world. He published a book called the Big Fat Book Of Bass that shows a lot of his collection in some of the most breathtaking pictures of bass guitars ever taken. He really hired a top tier photographer to take the pictures for the book.

Incredible to watch 60,000 in a crowd singing and moving along in unison to an instrumental. Mind blowing. Alex Lifeson the lead guitarist wrote this song at age 24. Alex can read music. 🤘❤🔥
It's always a pleasure to see someone discover the genius of RUSH. It is my understanding that it took them three months in the studio just to lay down this one track for the album, and because it was so extremely complicated, it was rarely played live. Check out the studio LP. It is an epic masterpiece.

Not only is Neil drummer's drummer, he's literally a human metronome. Their precision is basically a lot of rehearsal. Before a tour for instance, each musician would re-learn the music that was chosen for the show, Then after each musician did some homework, they'd rehearse for a several weeks until everything was solid, and each member was satisfied. Geddy would learn his bass parts until muscle memory, then work on the vocals with playing. Then team up for rehearsal. These guys worked very hard, right out of the gate, and that never stopped.
Love the fact you are taking Rush to church, right after Rush takes you to church. And if the church found out that you were planning to steal from Rush to take Rush to church what would church think? 😂 Great reaction and keep up the Rush run.
These guys didn't mess around. They create what they feel. They knew the songs by rehearsing their creation. They knew the flow. It's like 3 into 1. When you are that tight, even a mistake sounds good.
Alex and Geddy have been friends almost their entire lives. Unlike today, when recordings are by one-time lineups of "X featuring X, X, and X", the lineup of Rush was unchanged from their second album through the last. (There was a different drummer for the 1st album.) in that span, they had ONE guest vocalist, and ONE guest musician. It wasn't until their final album when they finally recorded and toured with a string section. If you are wondering why they are so tight, it's because you are watching moments from 40 years as a band.

Rush were craftsmen in addition to musicians. They perfected their craft.
In one of his interviews after Neil passed, Geddy called him a "fucking monster musician." In reality all three were fucking monster musicians! Geddy and Alex were best friends since, like 7th grade or so. Neil replaced the original drummer after one album with John Rutsey, so he was considered "the new guy.". There is no weak leg on this tripod.
This was a rehearsal with no audience filmed during summer/fall 1978. It’s the apex of heavy prog in my opinion.

This is Rush magnus opus. The song and all 3 members are at their highest level. Alex goes from a weeping violin to firecrackers on the fret, Geddy banging bass keyboard and pedals, w Neil giving another lesson on the skins. Doesn't get any better than this - caviar and Rolex watch out! 🔥

My favorite band of all time, I was lucky enough to see them live 13 times and every time it was such an incredible experience. It was like watching three virtuoso's performing in perfect synchronicity! Most shows where in Las Vegas, but I also got to see them a a couple of times in Phoenix, once in Grand Rapids Michigan and Once at the Red Rocks..a few years later while getting my first Rush Tattoo I had one of the heaviest mind blowing experiences of my life.

The pure synchronicity of Rush is what makes them special to me. So, a few things to know: This piece is based on Alex Lifeson deciding he wanted to express in music a period of his life when he was beset by very strange nighjtmares. Thus the title, "the strage village". This is also why he is featured much more prominently with his guitar than either of the other two. Geddy's bass takes no back seat, my man, it's pounding away throughout this number like John Bonham's kicks. But the song is Alex's story, so he gets the front. This band composes all of their music as if writing an orchestral symphony; no note is improvised, and the beat is so well rehearsed that it's locked in before you ever get to see it. For another example of this, check out YYZ, another instrumental with insane synchronicity.

Great reaction Church Man!! They wrote and released album “Hemishperes” in 1978. They were in their mid 20’s! This album nearly broke them! They were so musically ambitious that they have said they actually wrote music beyond their capabilities! They usually recorded live off the floor in 4 or 5 takes (rehearsed during sound checks while touring)! They recorded their whole 2nd album in 10 days. They attempted to record this song off the floor and were determined to do in 1 take, after 10 days, they finally had to admit defeat and record it in 3 parts! It took them nearly 3 months to record this album with only 1 day off! They worked and practiced this song for months after that until they could go out and record this video LIVE (with no audience) in 1 take! (They refused to do any song that they could not perform live.. and this was 1978) Geddy says they just do it over and over and over again until it’s muscle memory! They connect so well, they just know how to keep it on the rails, but they worked super hard for it! After this album, (which only has 4 songs on it) they swore that they would never put themselves in such a stressful, position again! It was putting them in a bad place ! So the next album “Permannt Waves” has a very different vibe! Lovin the journey, man! I recommend your next one be “Leave That Thing Alone” live from the Time Machine Tour! When you compose or learn a song, and if you have natural rhythm, you can feel and instinctively know where you are by what you are playing. I can play along with this without any trouble. It's all about knowing the layout etc.

Rush is a musicians band. I've seen them over 30 times and they sound exactly like the album. All in perfect timing.
Fun fact about La Villa... They struggled to record it for the album, so they did it in 3 parts and edited it together.
Then to record this video, they refused to fake playing... So they played it... this is the first take.
I noted this point above. Geddy told the story on his book tour. They hadn't been able to complete this in one take prior to this in the studio. They didn't do anything special, but this time it just clicked and they knocked it out in their first take...
They stopped at take 42 to try and get it all. Hemispheres was a progressive rock peak, but it broke them mentally in a way that brought in the eventual departure from the longer pieces.
Yeah this is a really special recording. It’s just a crazy hard song to do and they nailed it.
Hemispheres was an album were the guys wrote songs that were at or beyond the edge of their capabilities. The story about them struggling and then failing to record it in one take demonstrates this. However, they ended up playing it time and time again live with perfection. This shows that yeah they were awesome on Fly By Night, Caress, 2112, etc, but they were still growing as musicians by leaps and bounds.
You say you want some more bass; I say YYZ Live In Rio. It's based on the IATA code for Toronto's Pearson International Airport, and Geddy's opening bass riff is actually spelling it out in Morse Code. Cheers from Toronto!

Rush has some fantastic songs with Bass solos. I won't list them because many have already done that. But even when Geddy is playing rhythm, he's playing a solo. That's half the fun of listening to them. You could be listening to any of their songs and Geddy is there in the background doing the most amazing things.

Any Rush fan can tell you... you experience whole different songs when you focus on just one thing. As a bass player, I would expect you to hear the bass first. But you really need to listen many times before the lyrics come into focus, especially as a musician, and the virtuosity always overpowers the words. Truthfully that is why we are lifetime fans... you can listen over and over and over always finding new and amazing things in every song. Discovering lyrics is just a step in falling down the Rush rabbit hole.
Great point about getting lost in any one aspect of their music. I get lost focusing on how Geddy Lee manipulates his voice and enunciates the words to match his bass and tell the story.
Excellent reaction, and I know you will love "Working man live in Cleveland" and "Freewill", great songs with a more prominent bass. I will also tell you that Geedy Lee changed his professional contract to a bass that I believe disappeared and "Steinberg" and then to the Fender Jazz Bass. Another point to highlight is that in the drumming community it was said "A drummer uses a metronome and The metronome uses Niel Peart". Again great reaction and follows Rush. Blessings

@@BatFang-s8yAlex first formed the band in 1968. I think they've been stable as a 3-piece containing Alex and Geddy since 1972, with Neil Peart replacing John Rutsy as drummer in 1974 after Rutsy tore up the lyrics for the first album the day they went in to record it!
They each have their own unique cues to help each other out. They are known for being notoriously over rehearsed when it comes to the live show AND it’s like they have a special kind of relationship with each other and can basically telepathically communicate and react to the other person in a situation that might make other bands train wreck into stopping mid song and starting over, where they look at each other and keep going how they need to till the other one gets back in sync with them🤯I’ve seen it happen live when Alex broke a string heading into the solo of ‘Closer to the Heart’ and Geddy and Neil double backed a few seconds, together in unison, while Alex literally threw his guitar to one guy (stagehand) as his tech was running up with the replacement for him, and it was like maybe 3-5 seconds and if you blinked or looked down right then you would have missed it and never known it happened.👌👍🥇🇨🇦🎼🎸🥁🎤🎹

I was fortunate to see RUSH 6 times live, from late 1974 & last time in 1981. I am glad to see so many live concerts from them later in their 40+ year career. With 19 studio albums in their catalog, enjoy the ride!!!
No lyrics, the music is the lyrics. The song is based on some crazy dream Alex had. Every movement in the song is reflecting a person going to sleep, dreaming, having a nightmare, and waking up. That's my interpretation of the song. The section called "Monsters" is the nightmare portion of the song but not a traditional nightmare (scary), think along the lines on Monsters Inc. The transition after the monster section is supposed to reflect a big band, love Neils drums in this section. Also Alex guitar solo sounds like the horn section in a big band. Alex first main solo at the beginning of the song reflects a person dreaming.
Geddy is my favorite bass player. He has so many bass lines that are absolutely killer. One of my favorite lines is from Digital Man, just love the groove and melody. Two Geddy solos that that are fan favorites is Leave that Thing Alone from the Time Machine Tour and Malignant Narcissism from Snakes and Arrows tour. A must see is Working Man live in Cleveland, what is killer is when you see Alex and Geddy solo with Neil holding it down.

As far as making it back home, you can see often Geddy would walk over and lock eyes with Neil to sync the rhythm section.
Rush has been my favorite band since 1980. I am so enthused to see another gospel team member find this band! If you want to hear more of this bands 40 year career and the evolving styles they used, or the focus you mentioned in Geddy’s bass playing just listen to the comments. All Rush fans seem to be UBER fans, almost super fans. I will suggest three things to you: listen to 2112 next, listen to my favorite 3 recordings in a row- from the album Exit Stage Left Broons Bane, The Trees, and Jacob’s Ladder. Also, please note that Neil Peart is also the lyricist and that the this band is, in my humble opinion, among the greatest greatest collections of musicians ever put together. The Professor (drums) is arguably recognized as the GOAT for rock drummers while Geddy is also arguably the best (at least in the top 2 or3) bassists in rock. Sadly, most fans feel that while Alex Lifeson, the lead guitarist is among the top 3 to 5 guitarists of all time, critics don’t agree. Anyway enjoy your Rush journey!!! “Leave That Thing Alone” for crazy bass focus, and “the Garden” and so many more for incredible lyrics and stories.

I was fortunate enough to see 18 different tours over the decades. RUSH night was always special and a different vibe from other Rock concerts. No dummies in a RUSH crowd. You definitely need the lyrics with these guys. Wait a second, this song doesn’t HAVE lyrics!! 😆
YYZ live in Rio….. When most reactors see the size of the crowd and the energy,unity And sing to a wordless song, it blew the band away… a must watch!!!
In the early days of Rush, Geddy played strictly only a Rickenbacker 4001. He didn’t begin switching between that and the Jazz bass until Permeant Waves and Moving Pictures in 1980 to 1981. He would later play pretty much only the Jazz bass, but he did have a short period using a Steinberger and then Wal basses in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
He has one of the largest bass collections in the world. He published a book called the Big Fat Book Of Bass that shows a lot of his collection in some of the most breathtaking pictures of bass guitars ever taken. He really hired a top tier photographer to take the pictures for the book.
This song was about a series of nightmares that Alex Lifeson had especially when they were on tour. Three geniuses in one band! How do they do this? Practice, practice practice! Only Neil had drumming lessons growing up. Both Geddy and Alex are self taught.

Incredible to watch 60,000 in a crowd singing and moving along in unison to an instrumental. Mind blowing. Alex Lifeson the lead guitarist wrote this song at age 24. Alex can read music. 🤘❤🔥
It's always a pleasure to see someone discover the genius of RUSH. It is my understanding that it took them three months in the studio just to lay down this one track for the album, and because it was so extremely complicated, it was rarely played live. Check out the studio LP. It is an epic masterpiece.

Not only is Neil drummer's drummer, he's literally a human metronome. Their precision is basically a lot of rehearsal. Before a tour for instance, each musician would re-learn the music that was chosen for the show, Then after each musician did some homework, they'd rehearse for a several weeks until everything was solid, and each member was satisfied. Geddy would learn his bass parts until muscle memory, then work on the vocals with playing. Then team up for rehearsal. These guys worked very hard, right out of the gate, and that never stopped.

These guys didn't mess around. They create what they feel. They knew the songs by rehearsing their creation. They knew the flow. It's like 3 into 1. When you are that tight, even a mistake sounds good.
Alex and Geddy have been friends almost their entire lives. Unlike today, when recordings are by one-time lineups of "X featuring X, X, and X", the lineup of Rush was unchanged from their second album through the last. (There was a different drummer for the 1st album.) in that span, they had ONE guest vocalist, and ONE guest musician. It wasn't until their final album when they finally recorded and toured with a string section.
If you are wondering why they are so tight, it's because you are watching moments from 40 years as a band.
