Create a Bootable USB High Sierra Installer in Mac OS X 10.13

- *** High Sierra is now hidden on the Mac App Store. It is still available, but it's hard to find. To find it, check out this video:
Find High Sierra on App Store
This video shows you how to create a bootable USB Flash Drive Mac OS X Installer. You will be able to boot most Macs from it and then install Mac OS X 10.13 High Sierra without needing to re-download the installer for each Mac. You can also use it to format the internal drive of a Mac using the built in Disk Utility, this is also covered in the video.
You will need a 16GB or larger USB Flash Drive (aka USB key). Make sure it's empty, because you'll be deleting everything on it during the process of making the installer.
If you have a problem downloading the full installer and you only get a 19MB file instead of the full 5GB installer, check out this article to show you how to work around that problem:
osxdaily.com/20...
You will use a command in the Terminal. It is best to copy and paste it from here, just make sure you name your USB Flash Drive “MacInstall” (without the quotes). If you type it, make sure you type it correctly, or you will get an "unknown command" error. Here is the command for your reference:
sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ High\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MacInstaller --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ macOS\ High\ Sierra.app --nointeraction &&say Done

It worked! This completely saved my 2011 MacBook Pro.
I tried Command + R to reinstall the latest OS. It did not work, the OS was no complete package.
I tried Shift - Option - Command - R to reinstall MacOS Lion, did not work. (at least 40 times.)
I tried Command - R to Internet recovery, was never able to complete the download. (at least 20 times. )
I called Apple helpline, they broke my hard drive. After their "fixing", my computer was flashing an icon that indicates hard drive error.
I followed this, and it worked! I am so thankful! Thank you.
Zoei Key Did you get it to boot fully from a USB? My High Sierra install starts then show a STOP/NO symbol halfway through the install. What do I do from here?
Lifesaver video, many many thanks. Followed step by step to rescue an old MacMini. It worked when other ways didn't (and it's now 2024). From dead and gone to fully restored (albeit old OS). Thank you once again for a very well made and clear instructional video.
Thank you for outlining this very clearly and comprehensively. Was able to make the USB Bootable drive within 20 minutes by following the step-by-step instructions. I highly recommend trying if you're having trouble. Thanks again!
the command isn't working for me
Update, I couldn’t get the correct OS safely, so I used El Capitan, but IT WORKED!!! *patrick’s voice* I LOVE YOU! I finally have my MacBook back after a year of trying to figure it out. Thank you!!
Been trying to upgrade from 10.7.5 to HighSierra for ages without much luck, came across your video, had a couple of hiccups, but now all is well and install is working fine. Many many many thanks..................respect!!!
This is the easiest way to make a bootable drive that I can find, no dragging files around! Thanks so much!!!
Thank you for making these videos. I watched your video on downloading High Sierra, then watched the video on making a bootable USB drive. Everything worked perfectly!
Thanks you for posting this information. It was helping for me to recover a failed upgrade of a Macbook Pro to Monterey OS! The posting the Terminal command was a life saver too.
This is a lifesaver video 🙏🏼 after 3 days of trying to restart my MacBook and reinstall MacOS, I’m finally making progress. Thank you so much!!!
Wow never thought I would ever be able to do this. Worked perfectly. I completely messed my Mac book up wouldn't boot came across your video and followed it. Brilliant. Thank you very much
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! Finally someone with simple, easy to understand instructions! Much Appreciated!

From basically a vegetable to a High Sierra Computer. Thanks!! Best video on how to do it.
You're welcome!
Thanks! Was just finally able to bring a busted up 2010 Macbook back to life.

Thank you so much! You have no idea how great you made my day! Last night I almost lost hope until I ran into your video!
Best video. I got errors in terminal command from all other videos.
You also show how to downgrade from a higher version like Mojave in the same video, a real lifesaver.
Thanks a lot!

Thx it worked, but did you realy needed to stretch this video to 10 minutes for a 4 minuted tutorial?
I was having problems with my mid 2011 Macmini and this fixed it. Thanks
Extremely useful, cant seem to contact the remote server when trying to install via internet. Thanks
Thank you, I was finally able to get a bootable USB created!
You don’t have an idea of how helpful you have been. Subscribed and liked
Thank you very much ! The trick worked... at the begining. The Installation worked perfectly and I could enjoy it a couple of hour.
I restarted my MacBook Pro 15 ‘’ mid 2010 After beeing more than happy about the Tutorial. Now, Impossible to Boot the Mac to the Desktop Screen. It s stuck now at the Apple loading screen , and stays so forever( 2 hours now)
Any tip from this great Community to fix this late issue?
Thanks a lot for the Video
Hello, I'm having a problem. My macos won't download the full 5.1gb installation and is just downloading a 20mb "installer" that tells me my usb needs to be atleast 19.71gb. Any help with this will be appreciated.
That can happen sometimes on some systems. Check out this article that helps you to download the full installer: osxdaily.com/2017/09/27/download-complete-macos-high-sierra-installer/
Thank you very much, this fully worked!
Great!
All seemed great but: first the OSx install app only downloaded a file of about 22 mb in size and I was unable to use the OSx High Sierra Patcher app to get a full download, and then my computer crashed and I had to run a recovery online to get back to where I am now. Luckily I had that option on a backup hard drive because I've had issues doing it directly from my internal drive etc. Bizarre to say the least because all hardware tests are fine. Now I'm in limbo with a formatted 32 GB flash drive ready to go but no way to get it done.
Thank You Great tutorial with very clear instructions, but could you make a tutorial showing how to make a usb installer with multiple os on it? Thank You Again for this video.
Still works in 2022! Thank you!
can you upload somewhere the high sierra version ? I just went to the app store and is not there anymore.
Thanks
Search through Google bc the App Store only shows the most recent OS
Thank you so very much! Your step-by-step video was easy to follow and worked Great!!!
I never comment videos but this was super super helpful man. Thank you so much.
Thank You! Excellent! Worked perfectly and without a hiccup. Too bad there is only 1 thumbs up. You have a new subscriber.
Great video. When I downloaded HS from app store it only came up to 4.74GB. Will it still work or am I missing something?
Terminal says: Volumes/MacInstaller is not a valid volume mount point. No success!
Same problem here!!
Your directions worked perfectly! Thank you!!
Hi , thanks for video , but when i search "high sierra" or macos high sierra , it does not appear on my app store . what should i do ?
The best of the best, I had to rename MacInstaller to MacInstall, other than that was perfect, than you so much.
Nice way of explaining its really make it easy to worked out
dude that TTS voice when it finished sheesh
It wouldn't work until I left out the last \ in the command. Then it worked fine. Thanks.
Thanks for letting me know! It worked for me either way, but I'll update the command in the video description. I appreciate it!
@@GemsbokAppleTipsandTricks im getting command not found ?
Thanks alot this saved me a trip to the repair shop!
your the best!
So this worked like a charm to make a bootable disk on a usb. It booted up and worked on my working computer. I want to load it onto another computer that will not boot up. Previously it was and may still be in a booting loop. I can press Option and select the bootable disk but once it loads it loads to either a blank white screen (If I used the right Option key) or a darker screen with horizontal lines when I boot it using the left OPTION key. I get the same kind of nothing screen screen when I try internet recovery.... ANY magic tips? Thanks much in advance!!!
I have this 2012 I think MacBook Air and it wouldn’t install High Sierra but this solved my issues thanks your a life saver
I'd love to get a fresh copy of High Sierra for my 2011 iMac but it is now not available from the App Store. Please, have you any ideas where I could get one?
Your video is great bur instead of writing Macinstaller in you comments you wrote Macinstall for the name on the usb drive, with renders your line of commande defective. Thank you for your great content.
thank you!, would you mind doing a windows 10 bootcamp tutorial?
When I use the patcher in the article you linked it doesn’t work. I go to tools to download and it gets to around 500 then tells me to check my internet connection. This has now happen over 10 times. Every time it stops around the same spot. My internet is working fine as I’m running other apps running the internet with no problems or interruptions.
Great video, I've a question I need to swap the ssd should i do the swapping jsut before restarting hte lapto in 11:11
My problem is I have a critical program that requires High Sierra, not compatible with Catalina. Sadly I did not know this until I had already upgraded to Catalina - WHICH also puts Catalina in the Recovery Partition. If you try to download High Sierra to a Cataline OS Mac, Apple stops you dead in your tracks. My goal is to somehow get a copy of High Sierra to put on a Parallels Virtual Machine to solve my problem. Do you have any detailed ideas on how to accomplish this goal? Much appreciation in advance for your helpful comments.
Thank U soooooooo much ! It's very quick and very simple beacause of your description. Very nice 👍🏻
I'm really hoping your method works for me. About a year ago I was using my mac and the power cut out completely, turn it back on and the OS is gone. Tried recovery mode, ran the installer and it gets just about done and cancels the operation. Tried opening startup manager on boot, my hard drive used to show up, but when I clicked it, it did nothing, still got the flashing folder with ?. Changed the hard drive cable, still nothing shows up. Went back to the original cable and tried startup manager again, blank screen with mouse. I tried making the flash drive with the disk utility, but it my mac couldn't see it in startup manager. So this is my last resort before I completely give up on trying to revive my 2009 macbook pro.
Update, I couldn’t get the correct OS safely, so I used El Capitan, but IT WORKED!!! *patrick’s voice* I LOVE YOU! I finally have my MacBook back after a year of trying to figure it out. Thank you!!
Hi there, great video! can you do a fresh install after i made a backup on TM or should i start
right away with installing Hi Sierra ?
In my case I dont see the High Sierra upgrade/install option. It still refers back to OS El Capitan
Thank you! This video is still helpful 🙂
Ok, I have solved the problem. I had a wrong password. Sorry. You rock guy I gave you a thumb up you deserve it ! You are the best !!!!!! Thanks a lot !!!!! Xxxx
I'm glad you found the password and thanks for liking the video!
hello friend my mac only got older until masOs high sierra if more updates came out I couldn't update it anymore but watching a video on you tube I, am used a bootable usb and install masOs catalina but I don't like why? I cannot use many applications that I used in high Sierra masos for example imovie camtasia cut final pro and many other programs so unfortunately I no longer have Macos High Sierra on the hard drive I would have to do it from a USB my question is can you reinstall a previous operating system that I have? and will the applications work well? please help me with my question thank you very much friend
how long is copy process? im stuck on it!
EDIT: I heard him say the copying process could take 15, mins 30, mins, or more, etc. its 5g of data anyway to transfer
Great instructions, works for me just fine. Many thanks
A helpful future video would be to distinguish between external drive boot to create a segregated environment (eg., for children, business, spouse, etc.) and an external drive to install a fresh copy of macOS like what you did. Not sure if I'm mixing these two up. I believe you were doing the latter. I'm also interested in knowing if this fresh install will preserve data already on the computers hard drive?? Thanks for all the help so far!
Awesome video. This has definitely saved my bacon. Thank you!!!
i tried copying what you wrote:
sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ High\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MacInstaller --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ macOS\ High\ Sierra.app --nointeraction &&say Done
and the other was this:
sudo: /Applications/Install macOS High Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia: command not found
what am I doing wrong?
Pretty sure I did everything as you explained but the terminal keeps giving me the " sudo: /Applications/Install macOS High Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia: command not found ". Do you have any idea what could cause that ? I'm making the bootable key on a Sierra mac. Thanks.
make sure there is a space before and after "sudo" space after volume and so on. This is a lot easier to just drag and drop. th-cam.com/video/64IOWM8ezyk/w-d-xo.html
Great Vid. I created my boot drive , I am doing this because I have the flashing question mark , can't find operating system , everything went fine until I went to boot from drive , when I move mouse over the drive icon I want to choose ,it says thumb drive is looked , any ideas ? do I need to unlock and how ? thx
Mahalo my man. Worked perfectly. 🤙🏽
Thanks so much everything is well detailed and easy to do with your knowledge
I have Mojave OS, when I download High Sierra it does it through Sistem Update; however, it is downloaded Catalina instead in the Apps folder.. any idea ?
so this puts high sierra into a USB? Right?
Does not work for me - says "/Applications/Install macOS High Sierra.app does not appear to be a valid OS installer application." what can i do to fix this?
will this usb only work for the the same Mac, I'm want to make a bootable usb on my working iMac for my not working Mac mini
i get the text: "/Application/Install macOS High Sierra.app does not appear to be a valid OS installer application." please advise.
The part that says name the USB drive to MacInstall is NOT in the part that is copy/pasted. How does it know?
Will this work for windows with making a hackintosh
Doesn't work after install keeps saying cannot be installed and shows question mark on file on computer. I think that means file not found. I'm using macbook 12 so only have one jump Drive should I copy high Sierra to drive with installer. Also can't call MacInstaller only allows MacInstalle
Having the same problem. anyone have a fix?
Hello i am having an issue, i download high sierra and install like you did in your another video , everything goes perfect till when i start my computer and i am trying to install show me that i have mojave but i download the high sierra, does anyone knows what i am doing wrong? thanks in advance.
Thanks for the tutorial worked like a charm!
Thank you so so much. This video is very helpful.
Very cool tut! Thanks!
Thanks for this tip, it was really helpfull.
I cannot choose a disk to install.
The Mac is not taking any click, external mouse, I can navigate but cannot click, stuck at the last section, driving me crazy
Thank you dear jus i want help from you i forgot my MacBook air password 2014 model and now its locked totally apple store denied my request bcos i bought it from someone as used laptop
When you are prompt to enter the password for the computer what if you were unaware of the past password on the Mac desktop? Is that relevant or can you create a new password?
hey when I boot it it doesn't apear as Install MacOs.... it apeara as Efi Boot on a yellow usb device icon. Do you know why?
Why the last part on commands ??
And how to do a Mac OSX install from Windows if Mac Computer is unusable ?? I’ve tried many stuff but USB aren’t shown on MacBook after pressing the key for selecting boot device
You could try to boot from the Internet and then load the system. Try booting with these keys held down:
Option-Command-R
or
Shift-Option-Command-R
That's amazing man! Thank you soooo much. You saved my day!
Legend, thanks mate. Worked a treat (albeit with Mojave).
Great!
Hello i am having an issue, i download high sierra and install like you did in your another video , everything goes perfect till when i start my computer and i am trying to install show me that i have mojave but i download the high sierra, does anyone knows what i am doing wrong? thanks in advance.
What is the reason for this error message "sudo: /Applications/InstallmacOSHighSierra.app/Contents/Resources/Createinstallmedia: command not found"
I watched other videos on how to do this. My main problems were being able to get the installer from the App Store, but also I’m running 10.7.5 and apparently I can’t use these terminal commands to create the installer, Apple Support said I have to be in 10.8. I’m going into the Apple Store tomorrow to have them put my Mac on 10.8 (since I would need Ethernet to do it myself?) Just wondering if you or anyone can confirm this. I’m really hoping creating this bootable installer and then upgrading my hardware will go smoothly.
You can find the High Sierra online still. Check out my video here that shows you how to find it. th-cam.com/video/X6VWA98aXOA/w-d-xo.html
What do I do if I copied and pasted, put in my password and it’s says “macOS high Sierra does not appear to be a valid OS installer application?”
I'm getting the same error :(
Thanks for the tutorial,
I'm having some problems, after pasting the command it says the following message "sudo: /Applications/Instalar macOS High Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia: command not found" I change the name from Install to Instalar, since that the name file, I looked for the createinstallmedia file and it is there.. just don't know why it shows this error, can you help me out?
It looks like you have a ":" after "sudo" in your command. Try the command with no ":". Just a space after "sudo".
not work anymore... i copy/paste all text .. writing in document.txt exactly how is in video, and not work .. is bullshit ... all created same videos ..but nobody NOBODY explain this errorrs how fixed...
let me reformulate my query, in what moment should i replace the hd to the ssd
all great just edit this "You will need a 16GB or larger USB Flash Drive" because i just did it with 8gb flash drive... cheers!
Good advice, thanks!
I do not know why I am getting the error below:
/Applications/Install macOS High Sierra.app does not appear to be a valid OS installer application.
Try deleting and downloading the Installer file again. Maybe it didn't download correctly the first time. It sounds like your command is finding it, but there is something wrong with the file. Also, check to see if it's the proper large installer file. Some people have problems, where they get a small installer file that downloads the rest of the application when it's doing the install.
@@GemsbokAppleTipsandTricks Thanks...I managed to solve the issue....After downloading, instead of double clicking the installer dmg file I drag them into the application folder and then run the sudo command.

I'm having the same problem . What can i do to download the Larger file?
my brother and i get stuck inputing the code in terminal. says command not found.
I created the USB Bootable drive fine and because im trying to go back from Mojave it says "can not install due to newer version already installed" been trying all day :(
You can't backtrack an installation to an older OS unfortunately. There's a way to do it with Time Machine, but it won't bring any of your new files back. It will be a snapshot of your Mac when High Sierra was installed. You could manually back up your files and software and then format the disk, then install High Sierra and manually bring back your files and software. I know that's a lot of work though!
i did the same it work , but when i put the usb in my other macbook air it says disk looked ? is that because in the command i enter my password ? of my other macbook?
Everything OK, until it ask me to enter my password, at that point it won't let me type anything ?(keyboard non-responsive). I can type whatever, until I reach that point where it asks to enter password ???, any suggestions ?
Keep having : /Volumes/MacInstaller is not a valid volume mount point. (Trying from Mojave)
/Applications/Install macOS High Sierra.app does not appear to be a valid OS installer application.
people who come across to this is because they have a problem with their os and directing to the App Store to download is no help at all, we need something that can be dowloaded from a site that's not App Store,
