A friend wants me to review his 30 min techno mix. I had no idea what to look for. But thank you for walking us through the basics. I can now share my experience from a more personal view. I didn't realize how versatile techno really is. I love the infusion of different genres. I also know how to identify its subgenres. And I know which techno groove is my favorite. I love rave and ethnic techno.

Nice! The original Detroit version of the genre is still my favourite. And remember, don't techno for an answer.

That was so great. Always happy to listen to someone with a lot of experience. Now to go look for examples of Detroit 90's techno! Thanks for your work!

I've always found it fascinating how people passionately argue about what category music goes into. Who cares?

The ones who are detail oriented, they care.

strictly defining subgenres helps producers hone aspects of a certain sound further into itself, this is where entire new styles of music are born. It also helps DJ's and listeners traverse genres easier, since it defines boundaries and borders between styles. If you don't care that's fine, but you are vastly outnumbered both consciously and subconsciously by just about everybody who has a basic understanding and appreciation of not just dance music, but the evolution of art as a broad concept

One way to define Techno is that it's a dark grumpy non-melodic House with a low kick and a faster tempo.

Sounds good. Personally i would put a nice long pad or strings chord progression in there for the classic Detroid sound, but that's just something i really like.

I think techno should not be considered as bum tss bum tss, acid, repeating loops etc... It should be about technology, more experimenting, nerdy stuff and I really don't like the idea of some sounds what defines Techno, "someone's kind of vibe". that's how people started and found this genre.
For me techno can even be without drums.
I can totally understand that some people would not agree with me.
I really like a quote from mylar melodies podcast (which I really recommend to listen to): why we bleep with Surgeon and his quote: Electro is some kind of Techno but Techno is not kind of Electro.

For sure, this plagues almost every genre. Self proclaimed purists will always have a set of standards/practices that they have learned. But spirit of a genre is usually born out of experimentation and standing out. From jazz to hip hop. It all ends up being the same argument.

You are right on the money. Techno is a feeling more than a style or a set of rules. That is why when “techno” gets commercial it stops being techno, that “punk” DIY feeling is gone.

I have been out of the scene longer than I can remember, but I am keen to get back on it, thanks for the video, it’s funny as I find it hard to describe techno too as like you said it’s bigger than that, it’s just magical 🙏

So, techno is not something that really has a strict definition? Because I see some people acting snobby about music acting like this is and this isn't. But, it seems like there's some things that obviously aren't techno. I think most people have mislabeled a lot of stuff over the years. In particular, a lot of stuff on youtube, particularly uploaded around 05-08, most likely is not techno at all, but they are all titled Techno Trance. A lot of it is more close to hands up, some of it is labeled dream trance, and I think that is a good label for it to distinguish it. But, not techno.... Came here because realized they are still uploading these as Techno Trance.
For reference, the most iconic producer in the scene would be Dj Splash.

Is it more popular than ever? I mean if you accept the rebranding of progressive house as 'melodic techno' then maybe yeah?
