How to travel with a bike without a rack

  • I have been traveling with a bike and without a bike rack many times. I can fit in the bike inside my car and there's still room for 3 persons. I use a ski box to store all the luggage.
    I have been looking for a good bike rack and Thule raceway might be a good solution. It does not require a tow bar and I could still use the ski box for extra storage if I need to.

    A pool noodle would work well in place of paper towel rolls

    Hi Tommi I used to use a bike rack on my 4 door sedan car. then I found out a Honda fit could fit my bike in vertical at an angle with front wheel removed. I no longer needed the rack, so I sold it to a friend. I've been happy days since then.

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Vertical mounting would be a great solution. I have always thought that my car does not have room for it, but perhaps I should investigate it better. I could fit two bikes inside a car that way. A nice thing about having a bike inside is that it does stay clean even if it's a bad weather when traveling.

    I recently found your channel and I have to say that even though I'm pretty experienced cyclist I like your stuff and especially your relaxing voice! The biggest nogo for the rear rack is the fact that the bike will get very dirty. Ive been using the roof thingy, keeps the bike clean and looks cool :D But you have to keep in mind you have bikes on the roof, friend of mine destroyed his carbon specialized by driving to underground parking lot when he was coming home from a race...

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Clean bike is a big plus. It's not always possible to wash the bike while traveling. I think the roof thingy is a better solution. The rear mounted rack just seems to have more issues.
      Your friend had a major disaster! I can imagine that it happens so easily when being tired after a race and driving a long way home. I need to watch out for that! I can imagine his feeling when he heard the crash.

    Get longer bars for your roof rack and you can fit both on the roof of your car.

    Back in old days I used Thule clip-on 9104 bootlid attached bike rack. I still have it. If you want to test it, we could do a co-operation. I was able to fit it to VW Touran and Ford Focus wagon, but I don't know if it suits for your BMW. Since those cars, I have not managed to use. Cars with automatic boot lid opener are typically too crowded at upper corner of a bootlid.
    Another thing with those racks are that they tend to leave marks on rear window. You could tape-mask the area where it touches the glass. But if you don't want to use roof rack nor have a towing hook, there are not many options.

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your offer! Good point about the automatic opener and it's not nice if the rack leaves some marks to a car.
      Car should be clean when mounting the Raceway type of rack to avoid scratches and that's often not the case when on the road. Playing with tapes or some kind of microfiber cloth protection is also one extra thing to do. I would like the rack to be easy and quick to use. The more I think about this the better the roof top mount starts to feel.

    1600 euro to install a hitch receiver!?! No way. Buy an after market receiver for like 200 max, then either install it yourself, or take it to a mechanic who can probably do it in 2-3hrs. Idk what labor rates are in Finland, but its not a 1k job. Then you can get any quality hitch rack, IMO the best kind.

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +baltimorebjj Yes, those original hitch receivers are very expensive here. Many people install them when they purchase a new car, so I guess it's an easy way for the dealers to get better money. DIY method saves a lot of money.

    Use wider bars to accommodate ski box and 1 fork mount bike rack?

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought about it and I eventually got 2 Thule Proride bike carriers. So usually bike is on the roof and for longer trips that kind of an arrangement with ski box could work well.

  • @TimontheRoller
    @TimontheRoller 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The snap-on carrier shown in your video might not be good for some cars with poor-built rear door hinges or metal. I'm not sure whether it's true or not and how many bike it can carry.

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dmitry Nikitin I have also heard that those sna-ons may damage the paint. Thule has models for 2 and 3 bikes. I don't know how well they can handle wide mtb bars.

      I see, I have a couple of Thule Pro Ride ones, but if one buys 2 or more it's good to check that they are right and left accordingly. I also have the fear that the bike will somehow fall from the rack and crash into the car behind me, it's just the fear) It once happened to me at a parking lot when I was manoevring between the rows of cars and the hanging parking lighting cable smashed my bike. Both the bike and the carrier survived though and no one was hurt.

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can imagine that an accident like that can easily happen. Especially when coming back from a ride and feeling tired. I did purchase two ProRides. I probably need one more in the near future.

    Any chance your bike would fit inside the ski box without the front wheel and if the pedals are removed?

    •  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No chance. I would need a much larger ski box.

    I have a hatchback car too and travel in the same way, I have two childsseats though and removing them is quite a hassle. I have a similair bikerack as the Thule but my new bike does not fit it because of its frame geometry, I would suggest to investigate that first if it fits your bike. Anyway, cool channel, I subscribed.

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Kevin! Definitely a good idea to check the frame geometry. I just packed my bike inside a car and it was so much easier than it usually is. I did not have the childseat this time, so I just pushed over the rear seat. Those childseats are far from being plug and play ready.

  • @TheVelomobileChannel

    I can fit my recumbent bike inside my car, but I prefer to put it on the roof. And for my velomobile, the roof rack is the only reasonable solution. I made a video about it earlier: th-cam.com/video/1s_Y-3rAkZI/w-d-xo.html

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does the bike stay clean when it's on the roof? I think the rear mounted rack collects maximum amount of dirt while driving, so that's probably the worst feature of the Raceway and similar racks.

    • @TheVelomobileChannel
      @TheVelomobileChannel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It stays clean of dirt and dust but collects lots of insects 😄

    Is it not dangerous to have a bike lying around in the car?

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it is. It would be a good idea to use a leash or something to attach the bike to the hook in the boot. That's kind of a problem when folding down the rear seats in general. All the gear should be somehow fixed in place.

  • @scottiemanners
    @scottiemanners 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That type of rack won't work with your full suspension, you'll need something that cradles the tires instead of hangs from the frame

    •  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I went for Thule ProRide roof rack and it's been a good solution. Bikes are easy to mount and they don't collect all the dust when they are on top of a car.

    • @scottiemanners
      @scottiemanners 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Very nice, I just use one that the tires go into tracks. And also, currently building a 4x8ft trailer to haul 2 kayaks, 2 dirt bikes, 2 mountain bikes, a rooftop tent, and storage lockers! Nice vid though, I sometime just haul my bike in my hatch like that if it's just me and I am travelling several hundred miles

    Yleensä heitän kanssa pyörän autoon sisälle koska se on vaivattominta. Takana telineessä useimmissa keleissä pyörä likaantuu aivan törkeästi ellei se ole huputettu. Sitä paitsi mulla ei ole kunnon takatelinettä jossa olisi takavalot. Kattoasennuksessakin on riski kolhia auto.

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Takateline on kyllä alkanut vaikuttamaan huonolta idealta. Huputtaminenkin on sitten taas oma hommansa ja silloin pitäisi ainakin olla telineessä omat takavalot. Taidan hankkia kattotelineen niitä matkoja varten, kun fillari ei mahdu auton sisälle. Fiskarsiin pitäisi mennä koko perheen voimin 6.5 koeajopäivään. Hyvä pointti muuten kattoasennuksen riskeistä! Etenkin nastarenkailla tulee hyvin helposti ikävät naarmut kylkeen tai katolle.
      Ilman renkaita pyörän saisi auton sisällä pystyyn ja mukaan mahtuisi myös muuta tavaraa. Taidan kehitellä sitä varten pienen telineen, mikä pitää pyörän paikallaan.
