Up the Diablo Drop Off - AWD and 4WD put to the test! Passport, Gladiator, MDX

  • It's Labor day weekend 2021 and USDA Forest lands are closed because of the fires running rampant here in the state of California. Fortunately, BLM land deserts are still open. It's a last minute decision to head over to Anza Borrego. Going me on this adventure is @Johnpatalinghug (instagram) in his 2nd gen Acura MDX and his friends Alex and Theda in their Jeep Gladiator JT Mojave. They both have not seen the beauty of Fish Creek, so I was excited to show them around.
I have never ventured out much farther than the wind caves, so as we go deeper into the Fish Creek Wash we come across rougher terrain and the Diablo Drop off. We have a lot of motivation to make it up this climb, because it leads us closer to the mudcaves and takes us closer to our campsite. This sounds a lot better than having to drive all the way back from where we entered and drive all the way around.
So do we make it? You're going to have to watch to find out!
Disclaimer: Deserts can become a very hot place. In this episode I suffer from heat exhaustion. It's 104F out, and I didn't realize that my body is was not excreting sweat. Make sure you keep yourself hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids and make sure to bring an abundant amount of water. Stay safe!
**PLEASE NOTE: I've heard that Diablo Drop Off was recently closed to uphill traffic. I did not see any signs about this, and I tried searching the internet to no avail. I could not confirm this.

Update: know before you go! It turns out that the Diablo drop off is designated as a one way trail according to: www.parks.ca.gov/pages/638/files/abdsp_Park_Map201704.pdf
It’s very very hidden in fine print, but technically it’s there. Check out this Instagram post by @poserlanding. instagram.com/p/CTjND05g0KZ/?
Unfortunately, only a small percentage of people will be able to successfully do the research. What we need are physical signs! I plan on contacting the field office once I get some free time.
Give Marc and Vanessa some love @the.rooted.progress . It was their video that helped me determine that this will be AWD friendly if we start from Southwest and go Northeast.

Jon we live in the desert. The key is to replenish your electrolytes and NOT flush your system out with water. Apple cider is acid. Drink Gatorade instead. Also carry a box of those electrolyte powder packs you can add to water. Your body needs salt and sugar and minerals in the heat. Too much water and you'll "flush out" like you did. In these temps we tend to sip electrolytes and drink water only when we feel thirsty. After a while you'll be able to tell the difference between thirst and life needing electrolytes. You need salt to sweat... it's an electrolyte process... keep water and electrolytes in balance in this kind of heat

That no-sweat thing is so weird. The one time I suffered from severe heat exhaustion I noticed the exact same thing. It felt really weird to not be sweating when I knew I should be. I ended up downing probably 2 gallons of water over the next 2 hours and sat in a cold shower for a good 30 minutes (cold water hitting my head was almost hot by the time it got to my feet just from pulling so much heat out of my skin). Glad you recovered. Scary stuff.

Sounds brutal Braden! I'm really going to have to remember to keep up with my fluids at the 3 days of overland expo. I did a pretty good job out at the 3 day Outside Adventure Expo in Salt Lake City. A friend suffered from heat exhaustion and started vomiting. It was about 95F during the day.

Real talk about the heat exhaustion. You are 💯 about that. We were also out there that day-I was the one driving the white Sequoia @4:20. I didn’t hydrate either and it hit me hard out of nowhere in the afternoon (105 degrees). Same as you, I didn’t feel right; almost passed out. Going to properly hydrate next time.

I’m glad you pulled through too! 🤞 after coming across your group, I parked by the wind caves and was about to hike it. Something tells me that may have killed me. I’m so glad I didn’t go. Not sure if you ever watch @michael trans TH-cam videos, he has a 2wd 3rd Gen Tacoma, but we ran into him after I had my heat exhaustion episode. He later reported to me that his friend also got heat exhaustion down by the steel statues with 117F temps. Brutal weekend!

Jon thank you for sharing. I was your age long ago and would ride dirt bikes in the desert during summer heat. Long sleeve moisture wicking shirts, long pants, a hat (when off the bike) and continual hydration. A few sips every 10 minutes or so. You will never have to worry about heat stroke or sun poisoning. You are going to need at least a gallon or 2 of water a day to be comfortable. For perspective I go through a 3 litter camelback in a few hours while riding.
I also keep a spray bottle filled with water and give myself a squirt here and there while traveling. Count yourself lucky my man. It was good to have such a nice group with you. BTW, that Gladiator is sick!!

I felt it was so important to share my experience. It was an honest mistake on my part, I use to do cycling centuries and have been exposed to so much sun, but never had this issue. During these bike rides I was constantly eating electrolyte syrup. I only had two 20 oz. water bottles every 30 miles or so and never had issues. This heat exhaustion/stroke episode really caught me off guard. Thank you for sharing your experience as well, this comment section has become a wealth of knowledge and good advice.

Winch Tips: never used one but viewed in Revere Overlander the use of a towel/blanket draped over the cable in case the cable snaps & recoils. The draping blanket will disrupt the recoil, dropping to ground safely. Also saw on an Aussie off-road video. The tip is, carry a towel/blanket for this purpose even if you don’t have the winch. The driver who does may not be aware of this safety practice.
Cooling: Carry a cooling towel & ice when in such temps, even lesser temps. You can wet the towel and rub over body to hasten the cooling. And, use ice as well in pits, head, crotch if hasn’t melted.
Yes, Diablo Drop-Off is one way on the park and/or state maps I’ve seen. There wasn’t anybody else crazy enough to do AB in triple digits so you didn’t experience the traffic…LOL
Jon is also safety first. This good example that even the most cautious can get complacent and it only takes once to be disasterous. Thank goodness for the team being there!

@@JonDZ_Adventuring One advantage of learning this lesson the way you did, is you now know the warning signs first-hand, and know when you have consumed an insufficient amount of water.
Do note that you will ALSO need to consume more food and have additional electrolyte sources available for higher temperatures and/or strenuous work.
I got heat exhaustion at Fort Hood, Texas through a particularly uncommon method: insufficient food consumption and lack of electrolytes. My water consumption was sufficient, but I lacked the food intake and electrolytes to even properly retain the water.
When I went to fight some wildfires back in 2014, the meals they gave us to work through the harsh terrain and high temperatures were MASSIVE 1500-3000 calorie meals. I am not known for being a light eater when it came to binge eating, and I was still often-unsuccessful at completely consuming the meals.
I still consumed a large majority of each meal, which were specifically developed for wildland firefighters. I saved unused portions to keep signs of hunger at bay. The huge proportion of said meals likely kept me from passing out with the high food intake, as we were consuming between 6 to 11 liters each day per person. That water consumption will burn away those electrolytes, nutrients, and calories.
tl;dr consume food and liquids in general proportion to both expected workload and stress from high temperatures.

It's good learning to note that you had trouble recovering from heat exhaustion and that was with a cooler full of cold drinks and a car with AC to shelter in. Next time if you feel heat exhaustion, do not drink cold drinks, cold will make body shock from heat to cold which make it harder to hydrate. Drink room temp water will not shock the body and helps you to keep hydrate without slow it down.

Another great off roading video with the well modded Passport. What % of these trips would you attempt solo in your rig....no spotters, no back up for a push/pull or winch or an extra tool? I'm guessing it's a very low percentage considering the full package of hazards and Murphy's out there. What year is the MDX and what is his crawl ratio? How high a lift and what tires is he running? Compared to your Passport, what % of obstacles that you complete is his vehicle capable of doing in it's present form? What are it's off road limiting factors compared to your Passport? Thanks for the info.

Thanks Tim! It’s very rare that I head out on a trip by myself. Most of the time it will be in the Winter when I go on my snowboarding 🏂 trips. I spend the day on the slopes, and then drive into the mountains to snow camp. Unsurprisingly, not many want to join me on these trips with single digit temperatures 🤣. The MDX in this video is 2nd Gen, I believe it’s a 2007, which has the Honda 5 speed transmission with a 11:1 crawl ratio. The 2010+ models have the Honda 6 speed with a 14:1 crawl ratio. My Passport with the ZF9 has a 20:1 crawl ratio. The MDX has SH-AWD that precedes the current SH-AWD/iVTM-4. The newer premium awd systems can operate better at slow crawl speeds. I think the biggest difference is the transmission. Also, there’s this funky TPMS issue where you can’t turn off traction control is you air down under 28 PSI

So, maybe I missed it, but did one outperform the other, AWD vs 4WD? That question was why I watched. It was interesting, but I'd love input on that key question.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for watching Nate! It's a given that 4WD will out perform AWD in an off-road setting, especially a 4WD on the Jeep JL/JT platform (which is unique in that it has a solid front axle). The questions is, how close can a unibody AWD with full independent suspension perform compared to a 4WD?
Not all AWDs are created equal. The system in the Honda Passport is one of the newer and more capable systems. The closest rival would be vehicles equipped with the GKN twinster dual clutch rear differential like the Ford Expedition / Bronco Sport Badlands, Volvo XC90. These newer systems are special because not only do they have ABS based traction control systems that can pulse the brakes to help send power to the opposite wheel (which is older lower cost technology) but these systems also have a twin clutch rear differential.
"As clutch pressure increases, the locking effect also increases and more torque is sent to the individual wheel."
      www.whichcar.com.au/features/explained-twinster-differential
When I put my Honda in Sand mode, both rear clutches tighten which simulates a rear locker. But, keep in mind, clutches are designed to slip, so a twin clutch rear won't match the true locking rear differential found in the Jeep Gladiator Mojave. I hope that answered your question :)

@@JonDZ_Adventuring Actually, your reply is great. Thank you for taking the time to explain so thoroughly. That Jeep Gladiator looks incredible. Twenty/thirty years ago in my youth I'd have jumped on that one, but these days though I like adventure, I am a bit more subdued. I have a follow up question that maybe you have an opinion on? I am going to look more closely at the Jeep line up, but so far, I have been torn between a 2021 Audi Q8 or SQ8 (AWD) and the 2021 GMC Yukon AT4 (4WD), maybe the Yukon Denali (4WD). At 59 I don't do the off roading I used to, but I do go off road, more to get to destinations than go crazy, but my main use and concern is ski country winter time, getting anywhere, anytime, to and from a ski area no matter the weather or severity of the snow storm (The best ski days are snow storms after all). And in the Yukon trims I can go 2WD in summer to save gas on roads, and 4WD high, even 4WD low, when off road summer or winter, or on snowy stormy days winter. The Audi AWD Quattro is apparently now a 60/40 rear/front split but with the ability to send more power front or rear as needed, and if I go the SQ8 route I can add a sport package that includes not just roll stabilization but apparently a rear electronic ltd slip diff than can send at least the rear power to either side as needed. I'm torn, which vehicles, and which is better here, the AWD Audi or 4WD Yukons. I do appreciate the luxury these days, and looks, but the reliability/competency to get me anywhere anytime safely and with confidence is most important. Care to take a stab at giving me your thoughts on the above, maybe the AWD/4WD issue with these vehicles, and on these vehicles specifically? I would appreciate it, though I understand if you are busy. Thanks either way. And keep up the great videos.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Nate-zy5ce the Quattro AWD system is one of the “older” systems. It’s legendary like Subaru Symmetrical AWD, but this is now the modern age, and those systems have their limitations. They are open differential.
The biggest issue with snow is the threat of high centering. No matter what you drive, if the snow hits body of your vehicle, it’s game over. The Audi SQ8 has 8.7” of minimum ground clearance, but what a lot of people don’t talk about is “maximum ground clearance”. The max clearance in the SQ8 isn’t much more than the minimum ground clearance, but in a vehicle like GMC body on frame SUV, the maximum clearance is tremendously more compared to its minimum clearance. The threat of high centering on top of snow is much less in the GMC Yukon AT4.
For snow storms, the Yukon is hands down a better choice. Purely because you won’t high center as easily.
I think the only reason you would choose the Audi SQ8 is for onroad performance and daily drivability.
Hope that helps. Ask a way, I enjoy responding to these types of questions.

@@JonDZ_Adventuring Thank you again. I'm pushing it asking a follow up, but I will. I get the high centering issue, great input, thank you, but what about handling on snowy/icy roads where snow depth is less relevant than slickness and grip, in and around town or on mountainy side streets, but also at highway speeds, any thoughts comparing the two in that situation? I am leaning towards the AT4 or Denali, especially the AT4, just for maximum flexibility, but some of the Escalade luxuries are nice, and the Audi's have all those and more. I've thought about the 2021 or upcoming 2022 Grand Cherokee, some of those trims include the adjustable air suspension as well, but I need to check on the headroom, I'm a near 6'3" tall guy. In any case, thanks again if you care to reply once more.

@@Nate-zy5ce tires will make most of the impact on icy roads. I’ve been running severe snow rated all-terrain tires for years now. They are all year round tires. I’ve ran: Yokohama G015, Hankook Dynapro ATM, Cooper Discovery AT3 4S and Falken wildpeak AT3W. All these tires have the 3 peak mountain symbol, but snow and Ice handling does differ. My Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws are noticeably better on icy surfaces, all these severe snow rated tires would out perform any tire an Audi or GMC would come with from the factory.
Tires are the single most important thing for snow and ice traction. Watch this Instagram video clip of my Honda pulling out a new model Chevy Silverado Z71 with a G80 rear locker. The problem is he didn’t have the right tires.

@Alex Touch What Edgar is saying is that when using a winch, you should drape a blanket or similar for your protection. If the line, shackle or recovery point breaks, the end of the line will become a projectile coming at you. The blanket will pull the line down to the ground in that scenario and help to slow the object down. Also you should never yank on the line with the recovery vehicle to aid in pulling up the stuck vehicle like you did at around 23:17. Even though it was a slow pull, it's not a good idea and hard on the winch and line. Winch lines are not rated for high shock loads created by a yank. Winches should be a last resort because they are the most dangerous method of recovery. Far safer and faster to use a tow strap in situations like this.
