Great vid, but no surprise there : ) I am building the Revell Apollo Saturn V, and I need the right kind of gold for the landing module. The GX golds looked a little too pale gold, can you recommend a Mr. Hobby gold that would fit the LEM? Or another brand, but I really love Mr. Hobby lineup. Always an inspiration to see your Aladdins modelling cave, if I could make mine just a 10th I'd be happy. I have a pretty unrealistic video request, and I know it's a longshot, but a video oon the different spraybooths out there would be fantastic. I know the expensive ones are good, but are there cheaper (100-130 USD) options that are good? A video on what to look out for when buying, like AC fans vs DC fans or minimum specs.... Currently I am using a stove extraction unit, and I am trying to find time and energy to build it up so it's good, but it is large and I think it would just be nicer to have a prebuilt.
Many of the pros I've run into out there use a plastic storage bin tipped on its side with the oven extractor attached. Then they stick an led light to the inside top. The good thing about that is all the different sized storage bins you can choose from at Target and Walmart helps when getting the right size for your home. If I didn't get my booth on sale on Prime Day that's the way I was going.
I did a video for the Aqueous paint line. I'm having a little trouble getting the Acrysion line here where I live. I will test it once I have a good source to buy them. Do you know a site where I can get them?
Hey Rex! Thanks for your videos. Is it ok to add non metallic mr hobby laquer to this metallics to get a different color? Like add white to metallic violet to get a lighter shade of violet? Thanks!
I ordered the last blue you showed for a 1953 Fird pickup. I will spray it over black like you did. Did you test any of them with a clear coat? If so how did they turn out?
They work great with a clear coat no problem. But certain colors might not need a clear. Test them for yourself with and without. Looks very good without any and it's pretty durable
I would definitely recommend them for painting car models. Primer is an absolute necessity when using metallic paints like this. Having that glossy black or white undercoat really helps the flakes shine in the final finish.
With the loss of Model Master Testors I figured there's an opening for some nice enamels. Plus there's no enamel line up out there for Gunpla. My anodized colored aluminums are going to be real nice
I recently got gx210 - blue gold and I would like to know what kind of thinner should I used for this paint, online it says its a solvent based acrylic, would the lacquer thinners like the mr color thinner or rapid thinner work on these paints?
@@barbatosrex9473 yeah it was hard to tell in the video if there was a difference but I assumed there wasn't. Its been hard to get mr surfacer 1500 lately. Thanks for the reply as always!
Finally you got this line up!!! what would you say the longevity of some of these paints in terms of just keeping them in your area without use. like do they go bad?
A newbie question here, but can you use a color from a brand with thinner from another brand? For example, I'm trying to get some thinner for Mr.ColorGX series, can I use Tamiya Enamel Thinner for it?
Truth is, I'm trying to airbrush some ABS parts, and I've already got Mr.ColorGX's color, but I heard Mr.Hobby's thinner will break ABS part, what should I do? I heard Tamiya Enamel won't break ABS plastics on several Japanese videos on TH-cam, but I'm not sure if stuff from different brand mix well together. Some people I asked even told me that if you paint an ABS part, it will break within 1-2 years even if it didn't break immediately.
OK, you can't use the Tamiya Enamel thinner. The Mr Color Thinner is fine. Here what to do. Lay down a primer first. The primer is the barrier between the abs and the paint. With a primer as your base the paint on top of it won't reach the abs plastic.
@@barbatosrex9473 I see, thanks for replying. But what primer should I use though? Does Mr.Sufacer-1000 work as a primer? Also, if it's only a tiny part that I want to paint in between a gap, what should I do? Do I have to paint the whole thing? I guess I could mask everything out too, but I just want to see if there's any other way. (For reference, the part I'm trying to paint is SMP Garuda Eagle's knight mask's "hole".)
what do you think of them for brush work? Dont have an airbrush and small apartment means wife doesnt approve of spraying much. I tried the metallic green spray over gloss black with their clear yellow spray (sadly it is getting cold up hear so spraying on balcony wont work soon) with a testors pure gold and mr colour clear yellow over top as alternate paint and the4 colours were so deep and rich. With winter almost here though.?? Does brush painting high metallic glosses work for cars, can I sand out the strokes and reseal or will it lose the flake? just got back into Car models after 30 years and in serious need of advice.
It does look brushed on for sure. I tested the red for you. The airbrushed one looks smooth like it's plated. The brushed one does look like it's brushed for sure but with several coats with sanding in between you should get a nice look

Hey Rex, I am recently trying to use this paint with Iwata Revolution CR, it says a 0.5 one. I never had any problem with any primer or normal mr color lacquar paint. But I don’t know why this metallic gx causes me some trouble. I just cannot get a thin coat of this paint. When the trigger is not pulled much, normally I would get a thin coat of paint, but not for this one. The paint just didn’t come out. When the trigger is pulled to a certain point, abruptly I would get a really thick coat. I don’t know why it’s like this. I have tried different thinning ratio and different pressure. My air compressor is also a iwata one. Do you think the cause of this is my airbrush or something else? Also this paint would dry in my airbrush lid fast even with leveling thinner. What do you think is the perfect thinning ratio and pressure for a thin coat like in your vid. Thanks a lot.
@@barbatosrex9473 I did some tests further. I finally get a stable metallic coat with Mr Metallic color gx, but the coat is a thick coat that makes the part looks like a small piece of gold rather than the thin coat that shown in your vid. I used thick paint (60:40 to 50:50), rather than thin paint like (30:70). The thinner I used is leveling thinner (my rapid one is still on the way, so I cannot try that). My experience is that a thin paint would cause the airbrushing work to be really wet, since I used leveling thinner and it is really slow to dry, the result is always a mess. The air pressure I set during spraying is approximately 18 psi. And the airbrush trigger needs to be pulled little further. I use the same airbrushing move as you did in the vid. But the coat I get is huge different from your smooth shine coat. I share the coat with a Google drive link, drive.google.com/file/d/15qzBTWfWUwuwcK5JW33Spp3r0OOXLqHE/view?usp=sharing. I'd assume you used rapid thinner in the vid, so maybe that's the problem.
@@mengdewu678 I would try a different color. You might have a bad batch of paint. As crazy as that sounds, it's happened to me a few times in the last couple months. I have great luck with very thin lacquers and light and heavy coats.

I think its 50/50 but you could also go 60 paint and 40 thinner if you have a small airbrush needle or just if you like thinn layers at the time for the best finnish.
I usually prefer 30/70 Metallics pigment are pretty thick, you can thin it quite alot, almost triple the size of its bottle DO NOT PRETHINNED these for long term (like 10 months) Always thin when you want to use it, if there is left over, do not mix with fresh unthinned pigments
@@treborrrrr paints have its own seperator/oil that preserve them when not used or stirred, if kept in dark & dry place, paints can last for 10 or 20 year ish Thinner can evaporate even if you keep it in dark & dry place, once it evaporate, the only thing left is the pigment, the oil evaporates along with the thinner Not to mention, paints that lost its seperator have grainy texture, at least the case for mr hobby, its very visible on our eye, on camera, maybe not You can pre thinned paints, but don't leave it for too long, in my case, probably 2 year from old work, i notice the quality is deterioating alot Levelling thinner also help recover some quality, but spray it on something else first to see if its "good enough"

I've been trying to get a hold of some but haven't had any luck. I can't find a place that will ship them to me. Hobby Mio however is coming to the US, that's a brand I have been after
@@barbatosrex9473 Yes hobby Mio looks like a good brand even tho its from China. Not sure if their airbrushes are good, but they have some tools I think are good or maybe decent.
Thanks for your video. Clould you test mr.hobby acrysion.

Thanks!
Yes you can, no problem at all
I ordered the last blue you showed for a 1953 Fird pickup. I will spray it over black like you did.
Did you test any of them with a clear coat? If so how did they turn out?
They work great with a clear coat no problem. But certain colors might not need a clear. Test them for yourself with and without. Looks very good without any and it's pretty durable
Great video thanks! Would you recommend these for car models? And can they just go on without primer?
I would definitely recommend them for painting car models. Primer is an absolute necessity when using metallic paints like this. Having that glossy black or white undercoat really helps the flakes shine in the final finish.
Sorry maybe I missed it. Are they acrylic paint or lacquer based?
Lacquer
203 looks great!
goodbye testors hello Barbatos Rex enamels!
With the loss of Model Master Testors I figured there's an opening for some nice enamels. Plus there's no enamel line up out there for Gunpla. My anodized colored aluminums are going to be real nice
@@barbatosrex9473 You have earned success!
I recently got gx210 - blue gold and I would like to know what kind of thinner should I used for this paint, online it says its a solvent based acrylic, would the lacquer thinners like the mr color thinner or rapid thinner work on these paints?
Absolutely the Mr Thinner works perfect. It's the only one I use for these
Have you noticed a difference when spraying these over a gloss black base/primer vs a matte black primer like mr. Surfacer 1500?
With these particular paints no big difference
@@barbatosrex9473 yeah it was hard to tell in the video if there was a difference but I assumed there wasn't. Its been hard to get mr surfacer 1500 lately.
Thanks for the reply as always!
I have a .35mm needle, do you advise for me to paint metallic paints still or is the needle too small?
Needle sizes wont really affect the result in my experience, just changes the spray angle with
Finally you got this line up!!! what would you say the longevity of some of these paints in terms of just keeping them in your area without use. like do they go bad?
A few of these were low when I opened them meaning evaporation had occurred. I just added about 10 drops of lacquer thinner and it came back to life
What is the ratio of paint to mr leveling thinners? Is it 1part paint to 2 part leveling thinner?
At the minimum, these can really be thinned out. 1 to 4 will work too
A newbie question here, but can you use a color from a brand with thinner from another brand?
@@barbatosrex9473
I see, thanks for replying.
😂🤣 I always found the metal yellow kinda interesting
what do you think of them for brush work?
@@barbatosrex9473 thanks for the info. Im gonna buy these for my anime model kits.
Have you tried different colors or just one?
@@barbatosrex9473 Forgot to say, I'm using GX217 Rough Gold, on a Mr Color C2 Gloss Black surface.
@@mengdewu678 I would try a different color. You might have a bad batch of paint. As crazy as that sounds, it's happened to me a few times in the last couple months. I have great luck with very thin lacquers and light and heavy coats.
@@barbatosrex9473 Oh, I never thought the paint itself might be a problem. I have a GX216 by my hand. So might give it a try. There's not much people playing with this paint I can reach, so you are a great help. Thanks a lot.
what thinner did you use? Because when I tried to thin it out it got all pasty. (Pretty sure im not using the right thinner but idrk)
I think he might have used the rapid thinner. It’s designed with metallics in mind. He uses it in the other videos with metallics.
for an American type Gundam, it sure is lacking in the guns department.. great vid as always Rex!
bought the rough gold and i regret it , the flakes are to big , the yellow gold is great for a candy red

@@barbatosrex9473 Ah, yer both wrong... th-cam.com/video/IQNBQI3UDag/w-d-xo.html
How do you thin them? Is it 50/50.
I think its 50/50 but you could also go 60 paint and 40 thinner if you have a small airbrush needle or just if you like thinn layers at the time for the best finnish.
50/50 minimum. 40/60 or even 30/79 paint to thinner is perfect
I usually prefer 30/70
Metallics pigment are pretty thick, you can thin it quite alot, almost triple the size of its bottle
DO NOT PRETHINNED these for long term (like 10 months)
Always thin when you want to use it, if there is left over, do not mix with fresh unthinned pigments
@@somechinesedude5466 What's the reason you wouldn't want to pre-thin the paint far in advance, for us newbies?
@@treborrrrr paints have its own seperator/oil that preserve them when not used or stirred, if kept in dark & dry place, paints can last for 10 or 20 year ish
Thinner can evaporate even if you keep it in dark & dry place, once it evaporate, the only thing left is the pigment, the oil evaporates along with the thinner
Not to mention, paints that lost its seperator have grainy texture, at least the case for mr hobby, its very visible on our eye, on camera, maybe not
You can pre thinned paints, but don't leave it for too long, in my case, probably 2 year from old work, i notice the quality is deterioating alot
Levelling thinner also help recover some quality, but spray it on something else first to see if its "good enough"
Absolutely fantastic test! I've been looking forward to this one. I love how thorough you are with the results, definitely a pillar of what makes your channel so great. I'm gonna have to get the rest of this line now (except the rough ones ..just not my thing.) Your dad's woodworking is very nice, did he do a lot of holiday stuff? Or all kinds of stuff?
I can't wait to see your paint line. Ball park, how long do you think you are to releasing? 2 years? 5 or more? Either way, looking forward to it.
Give away would be awesome! If I win, that'd be my first Gundam. Thanks for the video and the test!
