We purchased a 5th wheel horse trailer & loaded it with the items we thought we would need the most. Our hunting rifles were put in a lockable container that we put at the back of the trailer for access in case border security wanted to see them. Pistols were shipped from our local sporting goods shop to another in Alaska. Took extra tires & parts for trip up. Once here we rented for first year, sold the horse trailer for the same amount we purchased it for & have never regretted our decision. But I must say this, Alaska is not for everyone whether you are off or on the grid!❤
I sold everything except what fit in a small pickup when I moved here. I was able to find everything I need to live once I got here. The Alcan was mostly just a gravel road then.
Alaska is safe from me- even if I could. I live in rural australia and our small town is overrun with folks coming from the city, only 3 hours away. They buy up big, try to make it look like a magazine spread then sell up again. There are no parking places for locals and it's difficult to get any handy men, traders or doctors' appointments. No one knows anyone now. They want animals they know nothing about. Progress, so called, happens but they dont stay to be part of what used to be our district. I wish we could move further away but land prices are crazy and away involves all the problems you mentioned. Moving is a huge decision and settling into a new community not always easy. While nothing like Alaska, our alpine winters are long and dreary too. God bless you, Alone.
Before relying on the helicopter insurance - my parents live in rural Oklahoma. They didn't know that an EMT had to ok the call for the helicopter. The reason my parents got the insurance was because an ambulance wouldn't travel to their house. They finally convinced the ambulance to meet them on a larger road. Not to be too graphic but it went like this... My mother had a stroke in the yard, all of the calling and arrangements happened. My father and sister loaded my unresponsive mother in a van and met the ambulance on the highway. They drove her to the hospital that had the helicopter but not the services to take care of her. The helicopter took her to a larger hospital. They didn't know the questions to ask when purchasing the useless helicopter insurance. Had the helicopter come when my dad first called maybe my mom would have lived, but we'll never know. Check the details and make sure they'll actually come to your home and that you have a place for them to land. I hope this helps. Thanks for all of the info, very interesting

Being born and lived on 60degrees north my entire life, I dont understand people wanting to move to this climate! 😂😂😂 I would love to move south, where gardening season is endless. But I agree with everything you say here. It is depressing to not see the sun for a little over a month during the winter. We are in another snow/ice storm right now. With risk of falling trees and power outages. I love to watch videos of properties in Italy, but will never buy one I believe. One can always dream. 💖 Happy weekend where ever you are.
Hey there! I'm someone that traveled North for this cold climate. I grew up in Phoenix. Had over 30 summers where it was over 110° for a month and a half. Not much grows in an Arizona summer that doesn't have thorns. I can recommend it if you need to thaw out 😉....I however, needed to congeal 😂 I spent several years in one of the Northern states before God lead me here...I did experience snow and negative temps before taking my leap 👍
Well, for me, I can not see living anywhere else. Yes, I wasn't born here, but I came here via the US Army in 1978; my birth state was stationed in California before coming to Alaska. I have known people who left the State of Alaska only to return 7/8 years later; they should have stayed.
I was able to do it pretty cheap. I had a brother that moved here before me and owned a property with a dry cabin my son and I stay in till I got on my feet. The first summer I did odd general labor jobs around the Mat Su. Then I got jobs using my electronics knowledge. It is expensive to live here if you want a quality lifestyle where you can get out and enjoy the outdoors away from the road system. I’ve been here 45 years now and winters are getting too long for my old bones.
I have to thank you for a wonderful presentation on ill effects of living in Alaska. My wife and I have been here for the past 50 plus years and both of us being health workers have seen many folks suffering from family separation, light deprecation, loneliness and overwhelming other issues. You have highlighted many of these issues, but had not stressed the availability of local resources. There are few inexpensive stores for food, fuel and other necessities and often a great distance from your location.. Sometimes you find yourself traveling a half day to and from and the time, fuel and wear and tear on your vehicle is substantial. Additionally, you will need to provide some shelter for your vehicle and as you pointed out a battery charger, and also a engine block heater. Additionally you need to find medical providers near by that will accept your insurance. The list keeps getting longer as you examine all these issues. Plan well my friend. John in Anchorage

Great video Alone! So informative, and interesting even to those of us with no plans to move to Alaska. Something that occurred to me was that when the Michells In Alaska moved to Alaska from Missouri they drove through multiple Canadian Provinces/Territories. One had a law against tandem trailers, and one of their three pickups was indeed towing two trailers. They had to unhook one and leave it there while they continued on to the next province. Then the one truck unhooked the remaining trailer and returned for the one left behind, while the family waited. I'm sure they were wishing they had researched a little deeper than they had.
She is definitely right about the vitamin d I lived in Alaska my whole life work on the north slope oilfield 2 weeks on 2 off for 16 years where in the winter the sun doesn’t break the horizon and stays around-20 to-60 Fahrenheit The lack of sun doesn’t really affect my mood just because I’ve been doing it 16 years, but it definitely does cause vitamin deficiencies.
A life-changing decision is just that I moved from the city all the way out into rural Oregon. It’s not Alaska but it is a complete culture shock and lifestyle change for ever. Sometimes I’m dying to go back home and I miss people but then I think what I would miss here and how I might regret that change. Before you make these decisions, think long and hard spend a lot of time because once you go, it’s never the same again. Your whole mind and body will be different!!
Well, unfortunately for me, it’s the people and everyone has sort of said the same thing. Oregonians are super isolationist and very aloof. Living in the city I had many, many friends and it was really easy for me to make friends and be social all the time. Also, we had sunshine and everything was Easy and available, including going to school and working and doing all the things I was doing. Out here I’m very isolated it’s very dark and a very dank type of weather and again I am living rural, so I’m not in a suburb or a community. There’s also a lot of really, really older people where I live and they seem kind of bitter unfortunately. I’m not young but I look super young and sound really young so I think they just are angry in general? If you’re from Oregon, you might not feel this way, but if you come to Oregon, you will notice all this. Other people tell me the same thing so then I know it’s not just me.

I recently moved (10 months ago) almost 4,000 miles from the lower 48 to this gorgeous wintery place. It was pricey...taking the ferry would have been more-so. The drive was absolutely stunning going through Canada into AK. I'm looking forward to having my 2nd AK garden this year and exploring more.

Great job giving the many important things to really think about before moving to Alaska.Going off grid demands that ya person is a jack of all trades, unless you want to pay through the nose, to have things done for you. We would love to move to Alaska, but leaving our family would be impossible, so we spend the money to visit Alaska to live out our dream that way., like we are presently doing. One key point you totally failed to mention in all your videos, and that apply to any remote areas from civilization. They are best suited to younger people with no known medical issues. If someone is over age 55, need regular doctor appointments and cannot do much physical work, Alaska is not for you, unless you have a death wish or do not mind your time on earth terminate a few years early. That point was driven home to me when I lost 2 people living alone in a big city, they had strokes and were not discovered for 30+ hours. One case were discovered earlier because neighbor discovered snow were not cleared as fast as normal, if this person was in remote Alaska, he can stay there almost as long as the "Iceman" in northern Italy. Home life are not as regulated, but in work places, Canada had long ago banned people working alone. In any emergency , it will take an ambulance hours to reach someone away from the cities. That is if they can find the place or did not get stuck themselves. Alaska have one advantage, few illegal migrants made it up that far to over whelm your medical services and eat up all your tax dollars.

Wait what? The Cassiar isn't mostly gravel. It is all paved, where did you get that from? I was born and raised in AK and travel the Alcan or the Cassiar every year. The only bad thing about it is there is no cell service from Kitiwanga to the 97 Junction and fewer services

They are an Alaskan company and if you plan to move to alaska, I advise first secure a residense in Alaska. Then ship your belongings via Lynden Trucking. You won't regret it. I know I don't!!!

Taking firearms through Canada is ok as long as its pretty much hunting firearms, no black plastic is a general rule. Shotguns, bolt action and lever action are generally OK, they charge 25$ Ca. at the border.. I have driven the Ak highway 11 times and had firearms most of the time and no problems, but I followed there laws. 50k rounds of ammo is allowable.

I’ve enjoyed the several visits I’ve made to my cabin there and moving to the next steps with getting a vehicle in place to prevent renting each time I’m up. this is one of the reasons I eliminated AK from possible states to move to, as fascinating as it is, I have wayy too much booms and seeds to legally transport to AK, plus the cost of the ferry was insane. I also couldnt give up whitetail and turkey hunting even for a chance at a moose

If anyone has ever had a DUI going through Canada may not be an option. I know a few people that were denied access because of this. I had a coworker that was working on getting passage after having a DUI almost 20 years ago and he was denied passage.
It's not that you want to live that type of life. One need to think deeper. Need to think whether want to live through one's life and die there. It's the same for any life styles. I grow up in high altitude. Short winter days always give me such a warm feeling.
Double check with "flight insurance" because not all are created equally since regulations have changed. And verify what they will cover land or air. Look at MASA they are a true insurance company.
Good advise for anyone considering moving to north. I grew up 50 minutes north of 60. Been down here at 38 degrees for the last 40 years, like it a lot.
Excellent video & once again extremely thorough. Perhaps you could put ALL that information into a booklet that people could buy to support you but extremely helpful to them by having to be able to refer to it rather than having to write it all down from your videos. You could even include a checklist and also a "Bugout Bag" to keep handy while living in Alaska especially due to sperratic weather conditions & power outages, etc. You explain things so perfectly so you'd be supplying a great service to others as well as making an income for yourself & maybe could list it on taxes as a donation rather than sales on your taxes if that can benefit you. I don't know a thing about that & taxes. Plus.... A booklet could easily be mailed & since that's considered media mail it will be cheaper and even better would be that anyone could print it out themselves for a little cheaper price. You could even have CDs made,... Whatever way is more cost effective for you & the viewer/subscriber. You really would be providing a great service!
You could also offer a series of booklets like lists of all campgrounds/RV prices & most travel time to get to stores from remote areas as well as the higher prices of groceries & being prepared & prepping for road closings & rules on hunting/keeping wildlife & those costs & foraging edible plants/weeds in Alaska & so much more.
AS a single male that hunts, fishes garden and traps. What would be a rough guess of moving to Alaska? I am a hermit type, all my belongings fit in my van.{including 4 firearms and ammo for them} .What would you reamend for necessary income for food, sanatory supplies, fuel for lamps and travel to shop bi yearly? Home life are not as regulated, but in work places, Canada had long ago banned people working alone. In any emergency , it will take an ambulance hours to reach someone away from the cities. That is if they can find the place or did not get stuck themselves. Alaska have one advantage, few illegal migrants made it up that far to over whelm your medical services and eat up all your tax dollars.

Wait what? The Cassiar isn't mostly gravel. It is all paved, where did you get that from? I was born and raised in AK and travel the Alcan or the Cassiar every year. The only bad thing about it is there is no cell service from Kitiwanga to the 97 Junction and fewer services

I moved my family to Alaska in 1992. The company we used was Lynden trucking. They are exemplary and I have only great things to say aout them. They are an Alaskan company and if you plan to move to alaska, I advise first secure a residense in Alaska. Then ship your belongings via Lynden Trucking. You won't regret it. I know I don't!!!

Taking firearms through Canada is ok as long as its pretty much hunting firearms, no black plastic is a general rule. Shotguns, bolt action and lever action are generally OK, they charge 25$ Ca. at the border.. I have driven the Ak highway 11 times and had firearms most of the time and no problems, but I followed there laws. 50k rounds of ammo is allowable.

Thanks for this episode! I purchased my cabin almost a year ago and have a truck that I need to get there from Florida. This has been very helpful! I’ve enjoyed the several visits I’ve made to my cabin there and moving to the next steps with getting a vehicle in place to prevent renting each time I’m up. this is one of the reasons I eliminated AK from possible states to move to, as fascinating as it is, I have wayy too much booms and seeds to legally transport to AK, plus the cost of the ferry was insane. I also couldnt give up whitetail and turkey hunting even for a chance at a moose

If anyone has ever had a DUI going through Canada may not be an option. I know a few people that were denied access because of this. I had a coworker that was working on getting passage after having a DUI almost 20 years ago and he was denied passage.

Double check with "flight insurance" because not all are created equally since regulations have changed. And verify what they will cover land or air. Look at MASA they are a true insurance company.

Good advise for anyone considering moving to north. I grew up 50 minutes north of 60. Been down here at 38 degrees for the last 40 years, like it a lot.

Excellent video & once again extremely thorough. Perhaps you could put ALL that information into a booklet that people could buy to support you but extremely helpful to them by having to be able to refer to it rather than having to write it all down from your videos. You could even include a checklist and also a "Bugout Bag" to keep handy while living in Alaska especially due to sperratic weather conditions & power outages, etc. You explain things so perfectly so you'd be supplying a great service to others as well as making an income for yourself & maybe could list it on taxes as a donation rather than sales on your taxes if that can benefit you. I don't know a thing about that & taxes. Plus.... A booklet could easily be mailed & since that's considered media mail it will be cheaper and even better would be that anyone could print it out themselves for a little cheaper price. You could even have CDs made,... Whatever way is more cost effective for you & the viewer/subscriber. You really would be providing a great service!
You could also offer a series of booklets like lists of all campgrounds/RV prices & most travel time to get to stores from remote areas as well as the higher prices of groceries & being prepared & prepping for road closings & rules on hunting/keeping wildlife & those costs & foraging edible plants/weeds in Alaska & so much more.
You sound like you’re getting frustrated with off grid life.

AS a single male that hunts, fishes garden and traps. What would be a rough guess of moving to Alaska? I am a hermit type, all my belongings fit in my van.{including 4 firearms and ammo for them} .What would you reamend for necessary income for food, sanatory supplies, fuel for lamps and travel to shop bi yearly? I am checking remote off grid locations
We drove up from the East Coast with a pickup towing a front end loaded that we used to build a house. Now we fly up annually since we snowbird. I flew up with my firearms, no problem. I bring up whatever I can’t readily get in AK. Everything else, we bought up there. It was far cheaper to buy new dishes than to ship up my old ones.
