I took that same bus and had to deal with that b's too! I was there last September and took this bus to Hoi An from Da Nang and back. My hotel told me about the bus and the price. When I got on the money collection guy tried to make me pay 30,000, but I said no and gave him 20,000 because I I didn't have enough change to give him 18,000 and 20,000 wasn't gonna kill me. He didn't like it , but I stood my ground. Coming back to to Da Nang the guy asked me to get off of the bus, but once again I stood my ground. It's a very uncomfortable situation, but it is about the principal, and it is a scam! I don't care what any of y'all say on here about having the money so being scammed is no big deal. To me it Is! If you're okay with it , then that's you! Let people scam the hell out of you, but I'm not with that.

As a Vietnamese, I feel bad and sorry for any bad experience you had in Vietnam. This is one of the saddest things of Vietnam's tourism that we don't want foreigners to have in Vietnam. A part of the local people are not educated well. Such a sad story to hear! The government and the people must take more actions to change that. I believe Vietnamese people are generally friendly and welcoming to foreigners. We really wish you better traveling experience in the future.

I've been to Vietnam twice, and I'll probably never go back. The attempted scams got worse the further I went north. I got tired of having to double check every bill etc for add-ons. Then I was the bad guy when I would bring it to their attention that I didn't have a bottle of wine,or that two people seem to have been charged for 3 meals. This went on,and on. Hanoi is the only place in the world, that when the plane pushed back it was" thank goodness we are out of here". I still go to SE Asia, but not back to Vietnam.

hello, i'm Vietnamese and now working in Da Nang. Let me tell you the truth.
you guys can see this kind of bus is old, and they run it individually, that means it was not received and support from the city. Da Nang has another kind of bus called 'inside city bus', they're modern, clean and polite, DN is paying bunch of money for it's activities from 5Am to 8PM every day.
The bus you took is Hoi An bus (work individually). The usual price for a full trip from Center Hoi An to Da Nang Center bus station 35km is about 20k VND (1$).
local people like me also have to pay extra 10k VND (0.5$) for big lugguage :D

    • @JumpingPlaces
      @JumpingPlaces  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Actually he didn’t charge any of the locals for their big bags at all which is why all the issue started in the first place, he even tried to block our view so we couldn’t see them paying him. He only started saying that the extra cost was for baggage once we turned the camera on... for the 10 minutes before that he didn’t mention that at all. there are many sites talking about the same scam with this bus... we actually get scammed quite a lot in other countries but normally the person isn’t so aggressive, that’s why there was no chance we were giving him extra.

I left Viet Nam more than 30 years ago by boat and fortunately made it whereas many lost their life at sea. The country ravaged by war, after those years A lot of people still struggling to survive on a daily basis, work hard just to put food on the table, hardly have a day off, left alone to have a chance to travel abroad on holidays. I don't agree with people getting ripped off wherever they are, watching the clip it brought tears to my eyes that how you see the incident on the bus as a scam, may be the man collected the fee simply was told to do so by his boss to charge extra fee for the luggage and due to his lack off English (mine is not perfect either) he was unable to explain and willing to let it go hopefully his boss doesn't question him about it (I gave him the benefit of the doubt that he tried to "Scam" you). The extra cost was insignificant but you put on a clip with its title saddened me.
You seem to be a decent guy, care for the environment and I am sure there are a lot of people in Vietnam would do the same thing, the negative things you pointed out outweight the positive side of it; if you look beyond the obvious you will understand.
I hope you have a safe and happy trip!

Expensive place to stay in DN, especially since you are on the other side of the Han River from the ocean. The prices are generally around 200K VND/night. Da Nang Beach was much different ten years ago...none of those hotels were there. It was mostly just open fields. It's gotten even worse along the ocean between Da Nang and Hoi An....they've destroyed the entire area.

Good viddy. Da Nang is gorgeous. The "might be ocean" you refer to is the Han River, which exits into a different bay on the other side of the mountainous peninsula you were on visiting mama buddha. I spent a lot of time in VN. Least scammy people I have ever seen. I have been chased by locals when I leave money behind, or forgot my phone on the table. Super safe for women to travel, very respectful people in general, and simply more nice and helpful than anywhere, including Thai. Much less touched by tourism, particularly in the north. I hope the title here does not scare people off. I think paying 50¢ more for some big bags is pretty reasonable. Perhaps its the "one bad apple..." situ.

Me and my husband spent 1 and a half month to travel from Sai Gon to Sapa by motorbike Honda Wave and we spent 35 millions dong , almost 2000$ for both of us. Most of the Hotel we stay its quite cheap, 150-200 thousands dong for a room, they usually tell you a high price but I did negotiate if they say no i will go and they call me back and accept my price . My experience are look on booking first, and choose a hotel that you like, make sure they still have room, go there and ask the receptionist, you can negotiate with them and have a cheaper price than a price they post on booking. Ask price before you buy or book something. Most of the Hotels in big city they have free pick up at the airport. Always have small change with you. Don't go buy local taxi, you can book Grab, Bee, they are very cheap and safe, always book by apps. These are some points that i got a very fun, cheap and wonderful trip.

If you look for trash you will find it on any beaches and to be honest, most of the tourists are not responsible like you. I have bad experiences with the Chinese tourists from cruise to land. It’s hard to stay away from them because they are every where.

had the same problem. going from da nang to hoi an they wouldn't let us on the bus unless we paid 4 times more. haggled down to three then contacted the bus company on their facebook page and gave them the bus no which is displayed on the inside of the bus. a minute later the conductor got a phone call and after that he gave us our money back.
going back to da nang, we just simply refused to pay any more. the bus was so full, he couldn't have kicked us off if he tried. visit www.globaltreats.net for south east asia travel tips.

City bus they don’t charge for your bags, but longer distance they do charge for the bags ( one city to another).Doesn’t matter if you are local or tourists. In some cases somebody knows you are tourists then they don’t charge your bags.

  • @MalMilligan

I've been to Vietnam 11 times in the last 25 years. Yeah charging "foreigners" extra is what they call charging "the American price". Vietnam Air used to actually have 2 official prices for every in-country flight on billboards in the airports behind the ticket takers. The Vietnamese price and "the American price". So that's not done anymore generally with airlines, hotels, and so forth, but scammers like taxi's or old buses will try to get the extra price. Best to agree to a price before you get on. Another lousy thing that happens on buses is they will tell you they are going to your destination and stop before they get there and dump your shi. right on the sidewalk leaving you to take Grab for the last part of your journey. Just be careful and plan a little better and ask locals if the bus will try to rip you off or drop you in the wrong place. I fight the mafia there for every inch and have for 25 years because that stupidity is bad for business and bad for the travel reputation. There are very reputable buses, you can sometimes get tickets from local travel shops. If you ever see something like a farmer carrying un-exploded war ordinance like bombs that did not detonate, just get the F off that bus. It rarely happens now but hundreds of buses have been blown up after the war from uneducated locals trying to sell scrap metal that was actually live ordnance.

You are lucky that your luggage not been thrown out. Just because more 10,000 vnd ($0.50), you might asked to get off from the bus in the middle of no where. If you complain of scam, every where in the world sure have scammers, its depend on your luck. If you afraid been scam, why you not arrange your transport at your hotel/hostel even thought is more expensive than the bus you taken.

MyMusicMyLife So true. You must pick your fight. In a situation where they have the upper hand and let’s say decided to throw you off the bus in the middle of nowhere it’s just not worth it....you are in their country. You may end up being at the mercy of corrupt police who will not help or hear you out esp over 40c. People in third world countries get cheated on by their own people who hold the upper hand too and they just pay up after the assessing the situation, knowing it could get worse. We travel a lot & have learnt this as well.

  • @Maithihieuthao

Hi. I guess that not much peoples from Hoi An or Da Nang comment on this videos. From me - a person has lived in Saigon many years and residential now in Da Nang for 3 years. I'll be writen here something that will help you. Firstly, I guess most information that traveller read on the webside a bout the bus from Da Nang to Hoi An or opposite side have price is 18.000 VND. I'll tell you that this price (also this information from the website) was from the begin time when the bus was started the journey ( the first time-the beginning day appearance of the bus, from many years ago). I has moved to Da Nang for lived 3 years, two years ago i went on the bus from Mable mountant to Bus Station it cost me 12.000~0.5$ I known that this is normal price. The second is that. If you comparing between the bus in the Da Nang city you could move between the first station to the final station more or nearly 35-40km it cost you only 5.000vnd (5k~1/4$) the distance are the same from Da Nang to Hoi An. You will wonder why does it cost so much (20-30k~5-6 times more) it also the bus ( even the bus from Da Nang to Hoi An is not so good - looking) the reason is that the bus from Da Nang to Hoi An is the bus without support of the government ( this bus moving from this province to another province-interprovincial bus. The bus received price surported is the bus has the route within the city. Sai Gon is the same if you move on the bus from the Sai Gon to other province you also go on a normal bus but the charge is higher than in the inner city). In Việt Nam we say that bus is " xe buýt không trợ giá"- bus without price supported. The third is that ( i'm sorry I do not remember exactly how many but) when we go on the bus with the carry mabe more than 12kg usually we have to pay a charge for it. I still remember that the day I was in Sai Gon the bus ticket was just 4vnd, after 3 years its was 5k and now its is 7k. Once time I on the bus with the flight luggage about 12-15kg it charged me 8vnd total with the ticket is 4vnd. In Vietnam the price be higher by time. I guess the ticket for the bus from Hoi An to Da Nang maybe from 18k up to now 25k-30k for the whole route. I write this post want to tell you and many more tourist or travellers that 25-30k is the suitable price (fit and right- appropriate) for the bus without price supported from Hoi An to Da Nang ( or opposite) from central bus station to other rest central bus station roughly 30-35km. Do not worry, although I am a Vietnamese, I very highly respect the Hoi An and Da Nang people. I moved here for 3 years and feel it bettter than any I been in my country about the price. And I belive on them. If any questions you want to ask, writing down in comment I'll be happy to answer. Thank you!

Good on you guys to confront with that bus guy. I am Vietnamese, you are correct, for the public bus, you only have to pay accordingly to the fare guides shown on the bus. there is no surcharge for the extra bags, plenty of Vietnamese people carry bags on the bus for their daily market.

@@2003Aidas yeah but this bus is different, there are blogs about this bus.. sometimes they charge 40k-50k even. some people said they went one way and got charged one price and then came back on the same bus and got charged higher so they are just scamming. I can even put our bags under our legs or on our lap... doesnt actually take up another persons space, had to do that in many countries for short distance rides. Plus not exactly taking someones space up on an empty bus and he put our bags on the floor lol not on a seat
