HANOI, Vietnam - Thu the dog butcher can’t help but look like a B-movie villain. A half-smoked cigarette smolders between his lips. His boots are slick with canine blood.
Worst of all, he keeps prodding dogs with a homemade shock baton. Thu is pacing around a brick-walled slaughterhouse in the outskirts of Hanoi. There are at least half a dozen dogs here, trembling inside wire cages, too terrified to bark. Thu zeroes in on a tawny mutt. He primes his DIY taser, a contraption powered by a motorbike battery and held together with electrical tape. “In just a minute,” Thu says mysteriously, “this dog will be white as snow.”
It takes two jolts to turn it into a convulsing mess. Thu lifts its limp body by the neck with an iron clamp. He plops it onto a chopping board, jabs its throat with a small blade and slides a basin beneath its head to collect the blood. And then the dog somehow stands upright, zombie like, and takes a few steps. Thu is impressed by its half-dead defiance. “What is this,” he says, “a mountain dog?” He reaches for a iron rod. The cement floor of his abattoir resounds once, twice, with the sound of steel breaking skull. Dead at last, the dog is dunked into a vat of scalding water. Its fur melts off in clumps. Sure enough, dogs boiled bald are a brilliant shade of white.
“See?” says Thu. “It’s as easy as bathing a child.”

Wow, I had no idea that Hanoi was such an interesting place. It seemed relatively relaxed, for a big city, and so clean. The train-track street was one of the coolest things I've ever seen (and again, so clean!).

The first meal at 3 min mark or so is bun cha ha noi and it’s served with grilled pork, so too bad you don’t eat meat since the pork is the star of that dish. Anthony Bourdain ate bun cha with Obama a few years ago, although not at that restaurant.

It's crazy to see how much you have both changed your filming style over the years, let alone how you've both "matured" or "aged"...I don't know how old you two are but after watching this video I'm guessing a whole hell of a lot younger than I originally thought haha. Watchable hours incoming from me.

Chris - I would, if you could, reissue this video with Hanoi Train Street in the title or Vietnam Train Street - you will get many more views because a lot of people who watch youtube like to watch train videos (Rail Fans) and you could capture some of them who would then be introduced to your channel. I noticed with Gabriel Traveler, when he did videos from Scotland, he got the most views on his train trip from Scotland to England ...... I think you must have good karma for a train you didn't think would come by for 3 hours, to come by in 3 minutes ... like your visit to the state park in Texas to see alligators which some people there didn't see all day but you saw in the first minute

I believed there's no entry fees for any temples in VN, as it is a place of worship, and to make money is wrong. However, I do believe you can make donation.

I watched your Indonesia episodes and that country really looks beautiful but all those people selling an imposing themselves on you two basically made me never wanting to visit that place.
