I'm in a rut too. Waited a week for the sun to come out, went out today, 0 shots, 2 confrontations, slipped on some moss and fell. Watching these videos makes me feel better, thanks for the content Paulie.

I find it really fitting that a video about getting out of a photo rut ends with the sun not cooperating after walking miles in a 12 hour span. While I agree with many that it is important to get out there and keep shooting, its also important to remember that many circumstances are out of your control regardless of your personal effort; which should be neither encouraging or discouraging, but rather a reminder to stay humble and keep yourself ready for the next day's effort.

Also you don't HAVE to shoot every day to be a photographer. Don't let that belief stop you from feeling like an artist.

You are looking for the needle in the haystack. Sometimes you find it and sometimes you don't. It's not a numbers game, just one really great picture beats the hell out of a thousand mediocre ones. That's why you do it. You are looking for that needle!
Great video and great to see the lowlights of street photography being highlighted.

Garment District/ Hell’s Kitchen- south and east of PA is the best for all walks of people clashing on the streets. From the zombies to tourists to workers, it’s the best mix. It’s dark, funny, sad, happy… everything

I’ve always done two things to get out of a rut: 1. Go to the movies 2. Drive off somewhere to explore and take photos
12 hrs of street is crazy! Would love to do that in NYC sometime🤘

  • @CharlieNaebeck
    @CharlieNaebeck ปีที่แล้ว

Yes indeed. Gotta get out there and get on the horse. Some of the best days I had in NYC were always on days I did not want to shoot. I got out there with camera in hand and put on my best playlist in my headphones and reacted to what I witnessed. I would often come away with a lot of keepers just because the initial action led to another connection or adventure. The ones that sit on their asses dwelling on the rut will never pop out of it. I said this teaching for Adorama, and I will always stick to it. 🤘🏻📸

Just a quick tip for everyone out there and probably the most useful one, if you are dedicated to something just do it in a way that makes you do it for a lifetime, just don’t go shoot or whatever when you don’t feel it, you will always come back stronger: just follow your feelings overall. Don’t force yourself. there are days with good pictures and days without: part of the game . Bye

I love that you guys have such a great street photographer community in New York and the fact that people are generally chilled about being photographed. Where I live street photography is not even strictly legal and people are really alien to the concept of someone taking their photo for art. Sometimes you retreat into taking safe and boring shots because of the anxiety. I wonder how you would approach a city that is not comfortable with the idea of street photography in general..

I love your videos. The organic nature of them. Not just the individual videos but that you created this whole idea. And I think you’re a fabulous photographer with a good eye. And presence. I think this channel is a gift to the street photographer community, a somewhat insular community though having grown, still small.
You’re the best channel, to me at least, just due to you. So thank you.
I don’t know (or probably you) what specifically you’re aiming at in your own journey, exactly. No creator knows exactly unless it’s what, to achieve a certain amount of views, fame, money. But an artist, their aim, is usually looking for something more. In addition you spoke about an interior dissatisfaction. Hell, that’s just part of human nature but personal to each person.
Anyway, shit, just loving your channel. It definitely, and this is kinda strange, but watching your videos, seeing other photographers doing their stuff, it does actually inspire me and does get me out of my photography rut. So thanks!!!

I live in Corpus Christi. Population 330k. Everything is flat and industrial. Been here my whole life. I find it soooo hard to find inspiration.
I took my first trip to NYC BEFORE I started shooting film, so a weekend of digital.
Went to Colombia for a week and shot 14 rolls, but I was also with my girlfriend, so couldn’t focus SOLELY on photography.
27 days until my trip to CDMX and I’m taking 50 rolls of film and will have 7 days alone. I’m hoping that will help me to push through.
Only thing that sucks for me is getting depressed when I come back 🥲
Love watching your vids Paulie, these help to motivate me to just go shoot.

Dude this is a super vulnerable and real and relatable and I really appreciate it. It’s super valuable to see how someone you look up to can also have down days. Very human. Makes fellow photogs/creators feel less alone so thank you for that man.
I also hope you don’t forget how much of a an absolute boss you are. The reason you are able to do what you do is because you are super talented as both a documentarian and a street photographer so I hope you get through it soon.
I think it’s clear there’s no one answer to the rut but if you want some other ideas here’s a few:
    1) go out for a day without any camera.
    2) start a new project. Could be as small as a daily theme (i.e. shadows, lines, etc.) that you are always on the hunt for or a full blown project that you can immerse yourself in.
    3) after writing #2 I remembered there’s books with like assignments and project ideas or shit like that. It may sound corny or like beginner photography stuff but shit works.
    4) probably use a digital camera for this one but pick a day to go out and just play. Do long exposures while walking. Fuck around. Shoot bizarre compositions. Break rules. Shoot like a 15 year old that just got a camera. Have fun and let go.
    5) take a break from shooting to pull together a project from old work.
    6) look at inspiration. Go to one of the many amazing museums and shit you have there and experience some inspiring art/architecture.
    7) take a break.
    8) day trip outside the city
Anyway wishing you the best from the west dude! Holler if you’re ever gonna be in San Diego and wanna shoot.

It just means that I'm going to have to find something that much more interesting to shoot.
But that's how its always suppose to be. It just means less chance of me taking pics of mailboxes and shit like that when I'm over-inspired.

Travel, explore new places, don´t become extremely selective, be more spontaneous, impulsive, open your mind to other type of photography, for example scenes with no people but with the human essence in the details, take some time off and study other photographers body of work, be inspired by other photographers, experiment with a different camera or format or film stock, go night photography exclusively for a while, to name a few

They’re dressed in folk costumes, Slavic or Bulgarian. I thought Paulie would get a bit more information. ;) Also, why are young street shooters so fond of Portra 800, it seems quite fast for daylight + fast glass. Maybe it lets them zone focus at f11?

    • @PaulieB

They didn’t speak English and it seemed like they didn’t want to explain so I let it be.
Portra 800 because, even on the sunniest day in the city, you’re constantly in shadows because of all the buildings. Can only speak for myself.

To get out of a rut sometimes try shooting something else. If you are in the city try ridding the MTA north and shoot some small Hudson Valley towns or go for a hike with your camera. Maybe photograph fashion there are a ton of models in the city. A few tips I can share for shooting in the city are walk from south to north. It keeps sun over your shoulders. If it gets to hot head down to the Battery and downtown, it is always cooler down there because the breeze comes in off the harbors. When you are near Bryant Park check out the ping pong players, there is a whole culture of players there.
