Easy Pre-Smocked (Shirred) Dress - Can You Sew a Dress in an Afternoon?

  • Today I am challenging myself to sew a full #dress in an afternoon. I am using a pre-smocked fabric from ‪@joannstores‬ that claims to be an easy project. Can I get a basic dress done in an hour? How long will it take me to add the sleeve detail that I am looking for? Would you make a dress like this?

    Wow, love this! I'm not a flutter sleeve wearers but I can see how it wouldn't be too tough to adapt the idea into a peasant sleeve like your inspiration dress. A tie strap would also be adorable.

    Great video. I feel like I know how to make it now if I see it in a fabric I like. I like hearing how you think through the process, I haven’t sewn in a while, but I feel like I learned more about how to sew. I’ve been meaning to make some pillow cases…

      that is amazing to hear - i bet your projects came out so well - i dont know if i would be good at shirring it myself

    • @faeriesmak
      @faeriesmak 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@WoodshedTheory Shirring isn't as hard as it seems. You just load your machine with elastic thread on the top spool and sew. There is a little more to it than that but I cannot remember since it was so long ago now. I think you have to make sure there is tension on your thread so that it creates the gathering. I have used the same technique on shirt sleeves as well to make a bit of a puffed sleeve.

      @katzenbekloppt2412 10 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Oh in my school they never offered things like that, I just learned by doing it. As I am not very good at fine-motoric things and am able to do simple things with the machine I would say give it a try.
      If I am able probably everybody is😅

    My understanding is shirring is the rows of elastic, so that's the right work. In a sewing course I found out smocking is actually gathering the fabric like that using embroidery. They look similar, but one is just elastic and one is done with embroidery. Just mentioning it due to the note at the beginning. 😅
    I have a remnant piece from a fabric like that and eventually want to turn it into a doll dress, but it'll take a little more work since it's child-sized.
    Very cute dress. 💜
