Part of what made this movie so funny was the fact that all the main characters had all played very serious roles prior to this. That and the references that people today wouldn't get, such as the guy say "No, that's just what they'll be expecting" was a reference to his serious role.

I'm glad to see a younger generation enjoy this film. A lot of the humor was very specific to the time the film was made. I showed this movie to my Zoomer niece and now she is corrupting her school mates at college. Haha.

I'm glad too, but I don't understand the "very specific to the time the film was made" part. Jaws, Pinocchio and Saturday Night Fever are old, but not so dated that modern audiences wouldn't understand the references. Most jokes still work, don't they?

    • @clearsmashdrop5829

@@TerryVogelaar I agree that references like Jaws, Pinocchio, and SNF will resonate with younger audiences. I'm referring to jokes/gags such as: Ethel Merman, The Folgers Coffee Lady, Hari-Chrishnas, Harlem Globetrotters, Mrs. Cleaver, the credit card machine (kerchuck), and more. It really helps to have seen TV back in the 70s/80s to get those.

@@clearsmashdrop5829 I was 10 in 1980, but here in Holland, TV programming had to differ from what was common in the US. I remember the Hari-Chrishnas and Ethel Merman, but the rest of what you mentioned is not familiar to me at all. I didn't even know Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, but the movie gave enough context to figure out that Joey recognized the actor who is also a famous basketball player.
The movie is still hilarious, even without getting all of these references.

The two airport workers who sent the plane crashing into the terminal at the beginning of the movie were played by David and Jerry Zucker, two of the writers and directors of the film, and the makeup lady on the plane was their mother, Charlotte.
The doctor was played by Leslie Nielsen who already had a long career as a dramatic actor from the 50s through the 70s before finding a younger audience as a comedic actor in the 80s and 90. You can also see him in the Naked Gun movies and the short-lived tv series Police Squad.
Robert Stack, Peter Graves, and Lloyd Bridges were also known for long careers as dramatic actors before being cast in this film.
For a good movie that takes place in an airport (not an airplane), you should watch The Terminal, with Tom Hanks.

Prior to Airplane, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Robert Stack and Leslie Nielsen were all dramatic actors. This was their first comedy.
“Airplane! (alternatively titled Flying High!)[5] is a 1980 American parody film written and directed by the brothers David and Jerry Zucker, and Jim Abrahams in their directorial debuts,[6] and produced by Jon Davison. It stars Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty and features Leslie Nielsen, Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Lorna Patterson.[6] It is a parody of the disaster film genre, particularly the 1957 Paramount film Zero Hour!, from which it borrows its plot and central characters,[7] also drawing many elements from Airport 1975 and other films in the Airport series. It is known for its use of surreal humor and fast-paced slapstick comedy, including visual and verbal puns, gags, running jokes, and obscure humor.”

In 1975, there was an actual food poisoning incident on a plane. Contaminated breakfast omelets caused nearly 200 people to get sick. Fortunately, the pilots hadn’t eaten the omelets and were able to make an emergency landing. By luck, the pilots’ biological clocks were still on Alaska time and they had ordered steak dinners. Recommendations were later made that crew and passengers eat different meals during long flights.

17:58 they were not all wearing stethoscopes, that was the joke earlier with Leslie Nielsen. At the time, you generally had to “rent” your headphones from the airline if you wanted to enjoy in-flight entertainment. They looked like stethoscopes so the doctor wearing a stethoscope was not immediately obvious.

It was good to see you enjoying this movie. You should rewatch it, because there are going to be things you didn't see the first time around. I've seen it hundreds of times, and each time, theres something else.
There are lots of things you won't get, only because it referenced stuff that happened before your time. If you were more aware of those things, I guarentee you'd be laughing the whole way through.
For example, the horse in the bed was a nod to The Godfather, where a man woke up with a horse head in his bed; A warning from his enemies that he was marked for death.
In general, my advice when it comes to watching movies like Airplane!, is to not overthink it. Just watch.

    Oh, you're watching _Airplane!_ 🫣
Well, I just want to tell you: Good luck! We're all counting on you.
The reason this movie is so overstuffed with jokes is that the writer-director team took the earlier movie _Zero Hour!_ (yes, that's where the exclamation mark in the title came from) and made it their goal to turn almost every single scene in it into a joke, follow every serious line from the original with a punchline. _Zero Hour!_ was one of the earliest examples of the "airplane disaster" genre that they were setting out to parody, with the other inspiration being the _Airport_ movies form the 70s - hence the title.
