  • I've had my Solo Stove Lite for about a year, here's a quick look at it. I also share some tricks I've learned while using it and take a look at my new favorite spork the Human Gear Duo I got in a recent Cairn package.

I do mine differently then you do. I fill the chamber with sticks that are under the top holes. I want to keep the top holes clear for the gasification process. Then I light the top since it is a TLUD (Top Lit Up Draft ) Stove. It's designed to burn from the top down.
If you want to stay away from the smoke and soot and are looking for a quick fire there is something you can do. ONLY the Solo Stove and I understand the Bush Buddy can do this since both stoves are basically the same.
I'm sure the manufacture does not suggest doing this but it works really well. In my Solo Stove Lite I put about 3/4 of a ounce of denatured alcohol in the ash pan in the bottom of the stove. Light it and turn the Solo Stove Lite into a alcohol stove for a quick pot of boiling water. This way I do NOT have to carry an additional alcohol burner to use in the stove. 3/4 of a ounce will boil two cups of water in a few minutes.
The Human Gear Duo is really nice since I like to do the freezer bag style of cooking. I like it because it packs easier and smaller then the long handle utensils I was using. .

I've got to get this stove out more, but as I've started to do more backpacking the stove is a little on the heavy and bulky side. But now I want to try it as an alcohol stove, thanks for the idea! - ps sorry for the extremely late reply, I never even saw some of these pop up.

Great review. Thanks for that. I have been using the Solo Stove for three years now. On several hiking trips but also on an 18-month-bicycle-trip (then in addition to a multifuel burner). And I must say, I really like it. Its not only good for boiling a cup of water for some coffee, but also to cook proper meals on. As you said, you have to feed it more or less constantly. But once you got used to that, it performs pretty good. I also like, that its closed at the bottom. So you dont have to worry about burning the surface it stands on. Another good thing is, that the stove fits right inside the pot. My set is still in very good shape. And even the pouches still do a good job. So in my eyes, the Solo Stove is worth every penny.

Out here (in Sweden) we always get both the pot and stove together when we order. Love mine that I've had for a couple of years now.

That's great you get the pot and stove together, here (USA) they are separate. I don't use mine as much as I should... I'll have to get it out on a trip this winter.

that's a great review. What brand of ziplock bags are you using? They seem to stand up to the hot water without any issues. That is great for not sludging up the pot when water is hard to find, but all the bags that i have tried went into melt-down or seams fell apart when i hit them with boiling water.

I'm using Ziploc brand 1 Quart Freezer Bags. They are BPA free so they are safe to put hot water into and can withstand freezing temps. As you can see they are pretty tough and the best I've found so far for this kind of use. The down side is they create a lot of plastic waste.

I haven't seen anyone on these reviews using charcoal in the solo stove lite. Can you use charcoal in it?
