I taught myself to crochet mostly using TH-cam videos during covid. I did have trouble judging which videos showed actual beginner projects and which were a bit too hard for true beginners. Even so, I spent a lot less money. I couldn't justify the very high price tag for wobbles compared to just getting yarn and watching TH-cam videos for free.

    • @dasha9048
      @dasha9048 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +47

Yeah, my aunt bought a bunch of these during COVID and gave them to me when I started showing interest in crochet. She never made one, and I didn't want to have to count stitches and use markers. So, I just found beginner videos online. I learned a single crochet and made 80 squares for a blanket. And I learned a double crochet and made 4 scarves for my family for Christmas. Now, I'm making a beanie. I felt it was easier learning one stitch and getting really good with it and then moving on once you get the dopamine from completing a project.

    • @katharinefrancis6320
      @katharinefrancis6320 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

I bought one to test it- the "left" is that they *flipped the video*- the writing on it is flipped, there's no reshoot or a left handed crocheter. It's not "lefty" it's just flipped. You're honestly better off with TH-cam's Left Handed Crochet videos.

I work at a craft store and these little kits are constantly out of stock because people love them so much! On average I'd say most people buy two at the same time, and we get calls a lot asking if specific kits are in stock. I wonder why since kits are always twice if not three times more expensive than if you just bought everything separately yourself. A blanket kit I saw was selling for almost 200$ but the yarn and needles they give you would have cost seventy dollars max. In reality you could knit a decent actual quality-sized blanket instead of a tiny one for 200$ with the highest quality yarn you could find.

The kits are 90% marketing. There are tons of cute kits for $5-10 that come with all the supplies, and there are FREE beginner videos. A skein of yarn, crochet hook, stuffing and safety eyes will run $15-20 at any craft store if you dont want a kit. I couldn't believe someone would pay $40 plus shipping for a simple project. I still can't.

I’ve done woobles and I’ve done other kits. Woobles is so much better- the yarn is super approachable for beginnings because you can actually see your stitches and never worry about them getting snagged. The instructions are also insanely detailed and include a help section that shows you ways to fix any problem you might be encountering. Obviously it’s not worth it for someone who knows how to crochet, but for an absolute beginner it’s amazing

I've been trying to learn on my own and the Woobles TH-cam channel consistently has the best tutorials. I keep wishing I had just gotten one of their kits because it would be so much less frustrating, and there's a lot of value in that if you're an easily discouraged beginner.

@@anonymousfrog1334They use a cotton/nylon blend. I would pick up 2 or 3 skeins (in different colors) and make 30x the amount of items with a couple of free TH-cam tutorials. An aluminum hook which is great for beginners will be $3-at most. Not everyone has the money to drop $40 or more on a kit to make a teeny tiny thing. And you only get a single pattern with the kit, meanwhile there are *endless* FREE online video tutorials. If you think about it, you’re not really getting anything special with buying those particular kits as opposed to the $8 ones from your local craft store. I feel like they just market them a lot thru social media so people buy into the hype. The rationed yarn and single pattern just feels so gimmicky considering the massive price tag! Granted, if that’s how you learned then great! But at the end of the day, people can just as easily learn on TH-cam

    CROCHET TIP!!!
I just did this the other day, I copied a pattern (from a blog) into a google doc and that way I can access it on my phone and I HIGHLIGHT the bits as I go through them, it is for an animal which requires better attention to where you are and what you are doing. this gives you no doubt where you are...assuming you remember to highlight as you go. You can reset and reuse when you are done. I typically write them out in a notebook (I always include credit even though its just for me) and I will use a stickynote to show which step I left off in, but this way you can stop mid round/row/whatever with no doubt!!! Im probably not the first person to do this but it was ground breaking lol

I think I’d definitely get them one of these if you can afford it. There’s cute unicorns and stuff on the website and the marketing with the names and backstories of the animals, the colourful packaging and the pre-portioned yarn takes all thinking out of it so they can concentrate on just the learning. They ARE horribly expensive though. Maybe you could make your own kit by finding a cute pattern online and giving them the yarn they need and you yourself are the tutorial?!

I tried learning to crochet before with free tutorials and it really is just incredibly hard to explain the basics via video. Instagram shoved woobles down my throat for months and I finally caved and got some. By the third kit I was just reading the pattern. I did buy a few more cause I liked the specific pattern but it’s definitely NOT worth it if you already crochet unless you love a pattern. If you dont know where to start just buy one or two beginner ones and maybe one with a cluster stitch (like the llama or santa) and you’ll be off to the races.
one of the rare expensive, heavily marketed items that’s actually completely worth it for the audience they say they’re for.
I so happy I can finally crochet and it’s all thanks to them. The best crochet tutorials for your money by far.

Like other comments I’ve seen, The Woobles is how I got into crochet and learned the very basics. It also gave me the confidence of being able to complete a project - however, I wish they would just sell their patterns without the entire kit for more experienced crocheters, especially for people who learned from their kits!
I feel like they would have the loyalty but of course after paying so much to basically just learn to crochet and start out, there is no real reason to keep going back to them for full kits.
They hold a special place in my heart! It was worth it in the beginning. But I can’t bring myself to buy their kits anymore due to the price and now having all my own supplies. The patterns are the only real thing of value anymore to me personally.
Love them for beginners! And wish them success!

Probably not worth it when you already know how to crochet except for maybe some of their collabs (I got a few of the BT21 characters they did and love them).
You can buy their yarn separately. It's not my fav look for amigurimis but their yarn is easy to work with and great for beginners too. I was seriously fooled into thinking all yarn will be easy and when I got normal yarn after to make a hat I was like why does this keep splitting! But I've learned how to handle normal yarn now too. :)

It's definitely worth it for me, if I can actually learn this time, as books never really worked for me. I recommend these if you have ADHD like me. I tried to crochet by myself first, trying to learn the “right” way with granny squares, etc. I got bored and confused and then gave up. The kits are expensive but the cheapest one is $30 and teaches you how to crochet. Yes, there’s free tutorials on YT but they are not as detailed and assume some level of skill already, not for complete beginners. I pick up and give up hobbies quickly so being able to see if I actually like it without getting tons of yarn was great for me. Also I have an adorable penguin now!

Amazon sells the Skeins of the Woobles yarn, by the Woobles themselves. Don't have the safety eyes they use, but I like that I can buy the yarn again even though its a little pricy at $11.99 on sale for one skein.

I started with a Pierre the Penguin one and it was immediately very clear that I had a talent for crocheting. Within 24 hours I made 3 stuffed animals and 2 shirts. To be fair I was immobile because I had just broken my ankle. But ever since then i’ve been addicted to crocheting. I actually have turned part of my room into a yarn/craft room 😂

I bought about $150 in “Woobles” because I wanted to learn amigurumi to make animals for my grandchildren but I got so frustrated I quit😬 BUT!! I thought if I make a blanket first & learn the basic stitches I will probably be able to complete one of the kits. That was about 5 months ago & since then I’ve made 4 baby blankets, 4 adult throws, one baby bootie (yes one😂) & countless newborn hats with bear ears. I’m slowly getting better but I STILL have not gone back to the amigurumi kits that were far too expensive in my opinion. I learned everything I know so far from watching TH-cam tutorials.

I've never owned a Wooble but from what I see in this video, I'm pretty sure you can go back and do it. Maybe they're a bit too hard for someone who's never crocheted straight, but the stuff you did now sounds at least equally difficult.

Honestly I love these kits. They are expensive so probably not the best to learn on a budget, but I had tried other ones before and just never could get the hang of what to do for certain stitches. Like the magic loop was impossible to me. And the yarn is super nice, since it doesn't pull apart at all.

Honestly, I would not recommend Woobles for a true beginner. Novice, maybe, but I say that explicitly because NO beginner should be doing amigurumi if they want a shot at doing it forever. Some love it and do stick with it, but the patience required is.... immense. I will ALWAYS recommend the trusty winter hat, pot holder, scarf or granny square project for a true beginner. Something that may not require multiple colour switching, tiny or few stitches, or sewing in pieces. If you can't do it well on a toy like Woobles offers, you'll be SO disheartened and you won't be as inclined to do it again.
That said, the benefit to Woobles is that you get EVERTHING you need. That much is nice, but not really worth it for the prices tbh...

I got a set of 4 kits as a birthday present. I’ve done the penguin and the dinosaur. I’m a beginner at crochet and I think the kits are worth the price based on the amazing video tutorials. I’ll watch tricky parts over and over until I get it right. If I were to go take a class there would be the fee for the class and I wouldn’t have that opportunity to repeat parts that were difficult.

Ive known how to crochet for almost 20 years now. But I do think the kits are cute. I'm thinking about getting my neice a kit if she ever wants me to teach her because I'm not a great teacher and would love to share the joy of yarn addiction with her.
The yarn alone is great for beginners since you dont have to worry about the yarn splitting but you can buy their brand of yarn separately or a similar style for cheaper elsewhere.

You left out one thing that the price also gets you: help! There’s a full FAQ and if that doesn’t help you troubleshoot your problem, you get a real live human being. (You also get a considerable amount of leftover yarn. I got my first kit last week, and spending about 2 hrs a day, finished my narwhal in about 4 days - which included redoing the horn for several hours because I’m special.) While I didn’t need the tech support, just knowing that if I really got stuck, there was literally someone available to talk to me was really nice.
I’ll probably move on from the company and purchase yarn and patterns on my own relatively quickly - and a better crochet hook for my disabled hands - but I’ll also probably continue to buy the occasional cute kit, because some of them really are adorable. Especially their Halloween and Christmas-themed kits!

As much as I love The Woobles and have gotten MANY kits, I agree they are not cost effective once you already know how to crochet. For learning though, the beginner kits are fantastic. The videos are quite good, though yes they use a mix of custom videos for the specific project and general videos. But the other piece they deserve credit for is it's not even just the video tutorials but the customer support they offer to help people learning to crochet. You can email or text them questions and get help understanding the patterns. They can even set up a video session with you to really coach you if you are stuck. So all of that is pretty awesome. And when I cave and get kits because they are just so cute even though I'm not a beginner anymore, I console myself with the knowledge that I am supporting not just a small business but also for them to offer that level of assistance to customers.

I have made Feix the fox and I had trouble with the yarn cooperating. I do think they should have scissors in their kits (especially for the price and claiming it has "everything you need") What if you're on vacation and you just bring the kit? No scissors.
I think they should lower the price a bit personally. But I did enjoy it. Loved your Bees and Monkey.

I think the Woobles is great for beginner crotcheters that have trouble figuring things out but i think that, with the price tag, theyre not really worth it. I started crotcheting with 1 dollar fraying yarn, youtube tutorials and no needles, stitch markers or anything to make life easier. I eventually did buy those things but what im trying to say is that you dont need special kits to start, though they can help a lot, you just need determination. I did think about buying kits, but as a broke college student i saved a lot of money and learned how to crotchet just as well as anyone who bought the Woobles.

In Canada they are much more affordable if purchased at The Real Canadian Superstore. They are about $20 less than on the Woobles site but they have limited options. Currently they offer Pacman, a moose, a yeti, and a penguin. Pacman is $30 and the other three are about $20 each. I really don't understand the pricing on their website. Shouldn't it be more affordable if it is direct to consumer? I'd buy more if it was more affordable.
It taught me skills that I didn't have before. I think the kits are good and so are the videos. They have a few kinks they could work out like text appearing over the tutorial on certain parts of the videos. They just need someone to test things to see if they are user friendly.
