      Just noticed due to the commentary section that this is an AI voice. Before knowing it I thougt:"Man, this guy has a great voice for this kind of videos!" 😂 But I am no mother tongue and it is hard to tell for me if there is some strange kind of melody to it. The ponunciation sounds quite good to me.

    My only complaint is that this isn't a giant tank. I'd love to see this scaled up to a much larger tank so you can incorporate a full school of dozens of fish or more. Maybe even include a land feature so you could have semi-aquatic invertebrates. The possibilities are endless. Great job!

    Fantastic work ! As someone who's used collected plants and materials I'd give the advise to be careful where you collect. Watch out for areas where pesticides, soaps, and laundry exhaust may be. I lost a colony of shrimp (fish unaffected) when collected a couple of km away from a rural farm to what I assume was pesticides. ♥

    Ooo what if you put an aquatic banana plant in there (I believe they’re called banana plants) it would grow shoots that would go all the way up to the surface then a leaf that would just chill at the surface of the water. This could cover up some small areas of light and make it seem more natural. Plants that grow like this are great for replacing sometimes troubling floater plants.

      @@peaceofnaturee I would add amazon swords, it would really add to the south American look, id also add in a yellow dwarf pleco and hatchet fish would look PERFECT in this setup, also it would be cool if you added endlers
      I have an idea however it would be cool to simulate the small streams in Venezuela where endlers come from like get a 20 gallon long set up a pump to mimic water flow and have a rocky bank as the back grown of the aquarium
      oh and add a few badis fish of some kind they aren't from south America but they would appreciate all the hiding spaces you have provided and just look cool and have so much personality and shrimp.

    Is a filter needed? If yes why and which kind. I thought the ecosystem does the filtering. Thank you:)

    • @AndrewFishman
      @AndrewFishman 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Why and which kind is a big question. Is a filter required, yes and no. Let me dive into it, you can decide...
      What is a filter - A filter is a mechanism for removing pollutants from the water. This can be mechanical (filter wool, sponge, sand) which catches particulate matter. It can be biological (bacteria esp. notrosomonas and nitrobacter, plants, planktonic growth, algae) removing or converting gases and other chemical pollutants. It can be chemical (resins, charcoal, exchange compounds) which use chemical reactions to exchange or convert gases etc, esp organic compounds.
      Do I need a filter - Only if you want a healthy system. You will see many systems that boast of not having a filter. A couple of these work on having deep gravel beds for chemical and biological control, relying on plants to absorb nitrates and carbon compounds. This can work if you have many plants and a small number of fish. The problem is, too few fish and the nutrient bed starts to deteriorate due to lack of defecation and other replenishment of nutrient source, however too many fish and you outstrip the plants requirements leading to pollutants building up and algae and other issues becoming problematic, especially as nitrate builds.
      Why do I need a filter - A filter provides removal of the pollutants that may otherwise build up to become a problem. They also, generally, provide some movement of the water, providing for gas exchange at the surface where it is agitated. More oxygenation is good for the fish and other livestock in the tank. The drawback is that over agitation can lead to a deficiency in CO2, leading to plants struggling to get enough for good growth.
      What sort do I need? - This depends largely on the fish you keep and the system you have. A Rift Lake or Marine tank benefits from a flow through, trickle filter as they are very high pH, they are therefore susceptible to ammonia issues (ammonia being more toxic at higher pH) and bacterial beds are able to operate very effectively. As the pH drops below 7, mechanical filtration becomes more beneficial to remove possible pollutants before they become a problem as the bacterial activity becomes inefficient and, thankfully, the ammonia becomes less toxic. Sponge filters, corner filters and other air driven units are good for these. Undergravel filters used to be popular in guppy and livebearer tanks, but have kind of fallen out of favour, despite still being very useful. Not great for deep rooted plants or digging fish. External cannister filters are useful for most tanks, but add a filter container you have to accommodate.
      There is also the consideration of whether the fish like a torrent (plecos), a slow stream (rasbora and tetra) or a stagnant puddle (kilifish and betta). Power heads, outside power filters and other pumps are useful for the first, airpumps for the second, no filter but lots of plants especially floaters for the 3rd.
      So, you see, no one answer will give you "best filter for all things"

    I have a 35 gallon tank I'd like to put in front of a window. I'd like for some natural plants to grow up like you've done the ivy. If I cover the back and part of the sides with the black film will this aid to keep the algae down?

    How do you manage your water quality? You have a lot of organic matter, do you have any issues with nitrites? What's the tank volume?
