Probably the best example and genuine demonstration on 'TH-cam'. No gimmicks, just straightforward talent and skill. Notice how Ben starts by drawing on the correct side i.e. if you are right handed, keep your subject on your left and vice versa if you are left handed. (Very important as a foundation to any drawing and look how clear the demonstration is to the viewer) Many important points shown throughout the drawing from a great master. Thank you Ben.
Daniel McGowan Wow, thanks. I'm left handed and have been self-teaching myself how to draw. Having my subject on my right will definitely help now that I think about it.
I used my left hand as the measuring tool. I can draw any way I wanted to.No restrictions. A talented artist does not need any tool to draw from life. Maybe that is why I was accepted to go the tuition free the Cooper Union in 1957 when I came from Hong Kong penniless. George Wu, AIA, ARCHITECT, NCARB 2017-10-11
Thank for the thorough explanations and graphics of the earlier tutorial about transferring the drawing to the canvas, book recommendations and Hockney mention. Great tutorial. Thank you for your time and effort.
i'm new to your channel, i wanted to learn to draw potraits for so long! i'm no expert but i draw small things, i really want to master the art, you are so inspiring, i really feel that i should do more practice! i just loved the way you explain things. Thank you so much! :)
Your work is at the top of professional. You captured the essence of the person completely. You are a Master. Thank you for sharing and I will go to your website now.
Thank you for posting your video. I have painted since childhood. I ended up focusing on still life or landscapes because I was busy raising eight children. You would think I would have plenty of models HA yes if kick boxing was my specialty111I now have time. I used to take figure drawin at the age of 15 up at Pels Art Studio on the West Side of Manhattan where we had live models, naked, couples etc. My old fashioned immigrant dad Greek dad would have killed me if he knew. LOL He threw away my art supplies, canvases and the rest putting them by the incinerator when he disapproved af what he called provocative portrait. Smiling woman with bright red lips. He forbad me from continuing guitar lessons. Women were to marry. My husband was the absolute opposite, supportive, and encouraging, he is a wonderful man a physician well loved by patients since he talks to them. He just finished helping me get some good lighting in my studio. The need I have now is to learn how to draw, execute, a portrait and maintain my style. I am what you call, confident in my strokes, bold, colorful. I do not think art is dead. Art evolves and represents modernity. I thank you again for this video. You do not need to reply just thought you might be interested in understanding the struggles of some artists who are female.
The reason why I explained what I did about how I thought you changed his complexion, it's because I've never done a portrait the style that you're doing it. Your portrait has the style of expression - or -distortion (Where in turn) the way I have done my portraits they are exact. ( Please continue .......... Also you see I have never done a portrait your style Personally I need to break away of the way that I do paintings, I've watched a lot of videos on people and how they do paintings to this style which I call distortion, or maybe the correct terminology is expressions, I think I could be wrong to that definition. Well I do enjoy the video, I think I'm going to watch it one more time on the technique of how you use your brush with the amount of paint. Thanks for uploading it.
Love love it! You are so talented! I'm glad you also showed how you painted the example in the other video that you sketched. What is it that you're spraying - with your mouth? some kind of fixative, I know. But why mouth? What did your model think about the painting? What is the board that you use to mix your paints on? Do you just scrape off the old paint when done?
It’s a charcoal stick, & you get used to holding it from the base, so that you don’t need to rest your hand on anything. It’s a different technique from holding a pencil. Doing the painting however, he uses a mahlstick, to keep his hand out of the painting. He’s an absolute master at drawing or painting!
I love the finish of his paintings it is like not finish but finish don't know if I make me understand, but we can't see much of how he do it ,I will love to see it completed how he apply and brush marks
Hello Ben. I love watching you paint and learn al lot of it! I have one question: I guess you are fixating the drawing at 6:30 and was wondering what you use for that? Thanks in advance for your reply!
I've seen in many other videos the drawing is done in red or white pencil so that it doesn't show through, at least black graphite. But you aren't using graphite right? You're using charcoal.
In this on I did not. Only working from live model. Long time ago I made one using photography and with some tools. th-cam.com/video/UrNXS86xXNI/w-d-xo.html
It would be amazing if I could find someone to teach me how to do this. I want to leanr about colors, how they work, and how to get better at realism but I since I don't have anyone to critique me or anything I feel like I never improve.
If you want a critique from an artist, search Lachri Fine Art, she is a colored pencils artist, realism, but she has critiques every week. You can see more of her critiques on her channel.
This is a very interesting approach. Wouldn't it be better to just make the outlines and then paint instead of making a complete sketch and then painting over it? Nice painting, btw
He's dropping in values. He'd have to do the exact same thing with paint, but oil would require more work than whatever he's using here and he wouldn't be able to modify the oil sketch without destroying adjacent values he's already established. Also, consider it a study, so now he has a better sense of the man's facial proportions and familiarity with his expression.
He did this as a drawing sample first. The video of methods to draw your subject on the canvas. He said he doesn't usually do so much detail if he's also going to oil paint it after.
To be honest I don't remember what I used. I have severals from soft to hard. It is not always easy to get good charcoal. So where ever I go abroad I checkout art supplies shops.
Thank you. Im also wondering what surface is best for starting with charcoal? I use canvas panels but they are very rough. Do you normally use linen panels?
The size of the canvas: 50 x 50 cm.
thank u for replay to my answer Mr.Ben Lustenhouwer.
hi Ben what are the tools you are using

On the other hand, :-) I'm right handed, but left eye dominant.. So hmm
You're a genious, Mr. Lustenhouwer! There's nothing in life like enjoying such a gift.
Thank for the thorough explanations and graphics of the earlier tutorial about transferring the drawing to the canvas, book recommendations and Hockney mention. Great tutorial. Thank you for your time and effort.
This is the eye and mind, touching the model..... When eye and model become one!

Thanks for these videos, amigo!!
Thank you! Merry Christmas! :)
Wonderful! Thank you the video!
I like the idea of using two flat spoons for color matching at a distance. Thanks for the tip.
You are so welcome!
great sir ,you are the best👍

Amazing! How long does it take to make a painting like this?
Love love it! You are so talented! I'm glad you also showed how you painted the example in the other video that you sketched. What is it that you're spraying - with your mouth? some kind of fixative, I know. But why mouth? What did your model think about the painting?

That was great.
LOL at 9:27
"On bike, you'll take 40 minutes. On bus it takes an hour and a half."
That is outstanding
what the heck... how can anyone draw so well with a weird wiggly stick and no place to rest your arm on?!
Practice... that's what they say anyway...
@@cyarikaprime900 Mahl stick to rest your hand on.
@@PntrGrl True, my bad.

Hi Ben, this was amazing! Out of curiosity, how much do you usually sell your paintings for?
I love the finish of his paintings it is like not finish but finish don't know if I make me understand, but we can't see much of how he do it ,I will love to see it completed how he apply and brush marks

Thank you Asif
Wow wow wow you r amazing
amazing
What u placed on the drawing before u paint on it by oil colors?
What is the name of the song? (Or songs)
Harikasınız...
Please tell me what you are drawing with?
What are you spraying on the drawing before painting?
It's fixative so the charcoal doesn't smudge.:)
Hello Ben. I love watching you paint and learn al lot of it! I have one question: I guess you are fixating the drawing at 6:30 and was wondering what you use for that? Thanks in advance for your reply!
I must fix the charcoal drawing in order not to lose it when starting in oil.
The fixative: shellac.
Ben Lustenhouwer Thanks!
What size canvas is please.
Sensacional
Ya veo que sobre el carboncillo lo fijaste con laca para que no te estropeara el grafito el oleo. Un saludo.
Un saludo Antonio.
sir i love art and my hobby but i have no sources to learn art with a teacher are you teach me reply please i love art
beautiful ..sir! which oil do you use?
Bela Mardia I usually use Rembrandt - Talens
very helpful
If I may, doesn't all the black chalk interfere with the color layer, in particular the light tones?
He used a spray so that it doesn't smudge. Oil paint is quite thick, so it would cover everything up.
your tool for color selection improvised ? (a spoon with a hole)
#INNOVATION!! :3
Hi! At the 6:33 minute are you protecting the draw with an spray?
Yes I did. The fixative is shellac.
I've seen in many other videos the drawing is done in red or white pencil so that it doesn't show through, at least black graphite. But you aren't using graphite right? You're using charcoal.
Sir many thanks.. what's a method of measuring
any measuring method will do te job. I use a knitting needle when working from live model.
Are you using vine charcoal?
Yes he is
Are you using comparative measurements or transferring the exact measurements from the model to the canvas?
In this on I did not. Only working from live model. Long time ago I made one using photography and with some tools. th-cam.com/video/UrNXS86xXNI/w-d-xo.html
Sir Ben, I wonder what is the stuff that you spayed before you begin painting 6:32
The stuff is a fixative: shellac.
It would be amazing if I could find someone to teach me how to do this. I want to leanr about colors, how they work, and how to get better at realism but I since I don't have anyone to critique me or anything I feel like I never improve.

the same here like your situation
You're fantastic, as the Chinese saying, old ginger always taste better.
This is a very interesting approach. Wouldn't it be better to just make the outlines and then paint instead of making a complete sketch and then painting over it?

De haber nacido en Holanda ubiera sido su alumno.
bueno bueno
Just one word "WUOO" Cant wait to be in your workshop
What kind of charcoal are you using? When I use vine charcoal the tip dulls very fast and it’s hard to get accurate lines.
What's the brand or maker of that wood stove?
Thank you.
The stove you can find under the name Bullerjan.
Ben Lustenhouwer
Thank you again
He is a God
Song please :)
nice sir
how many sittings did the oil part take?
I did the main oil part in one single session. The next day only some retracing.
Thank you so much for the response and for your amazing helpful and inspiring videos! I would love to attend your workshop someday.
How much time you were drawing the model ?
+Martin Jakimovski The drawing session was about 2,5 hours
+Ben Lustenhouwer Thank you very much

5 stars
why does the man look like Abraham Lincoln?!!
they told him he could be whatever he want
I think he could be a captain of a ship , during the time of the probation with illegal liquor in Barrel on a huge ship in the 1900s
sakeef chowdhury
-_-
probably the neck beard.
Actually he looks like an Amish guy in a hoodie.
he look like Captain Ahab when the beast beckons.
