You can see Harry's a nice, good man because you've captured that. He's also strong, stable and steady and has seen stormy times. I'm sure he would have been very pleased with it.

First of all I love your work and your perfectionism in doing small drawings or thumb nails of a project before painting. You have sent a higher bar for an artist to achieve the best of their work. Your portraits I absolutely think are incredible my favorite is of the horse and the worker, as well as the one in this video. I live across the pond in the southwest where I am close to Native Americans and I attend their celebrations, and their artwork fesativals in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I agree with what you say to paint people closer to one rather than a movie star or someone distant to us. I find this resonates with paintings I like to do concerning the subject of Native American elders and people that are interesting, the lines in their face, the color of their eyes maybe having a cast of a pearly color that surrounds their iris showing years of living, and the lines of their faces that show them reflecting the terrain that surrounds then in crevices of the mountains and the arid climate of the badlands in South Dakota, where I once lived.
Thank you for all you, do a very appreciative fan.

You certainly do have a chance. There are people who specialize in illustration, and people who are specialist colorists. Then, as others indicated, you can make it part of what distinguishes you from others. Being able to see things differently could be turned into an advantage if you work to find a way. I know an artist that, due to the loss of his hands in childhood, paints (much better than most) using his feet . As the quote attributed to Henry Ford goes "whether you think you can, or whether you think you cannot, you're right".

what might have triggered for those 105 thumb down clicks? Amazing amazing brush strokes that brings out exact personality of the character and whoaaa, the eyelids showing thinned skin due to age depicted so nicely! I am inspired to paint like this! I have done several portraits and people do admire a lot...and I too find improvement in each one next in line completed by me , and yet there is so much to learn! Andrew, thanks for showing new method of getting subtle characteristics with each brush stroke! I have not used the angular brush, I will give it a try!
    Thanks.

Wonderful, and extra poignant for me since my dear dad was also born in the Netherlands in 1927.. Alas, I lost him in 2002, and my mom ten years later. This was a wonderful generation, who lived through WWII, didn't make a fuss and who, when they saw a problem, tried to solve it with hard work and deep faith.

Do you happen to know what colour in the matisse range is the closest to your oil colour? There is a Quinacridone Red in the range but it looks to be a deeper red than your video. Matisse also have some crimson red colours. If you have the time to answer I would much appreciate it. Kind regards, Lyn-Maree

the way u teach and verbalize your techniques... let the audience' mind fill in the details.. save the white/tonal? for last.. paint the eyes at the end coz it finally unveils the character of the person and will make the whole process worth it.. and finally u reminded me of the reason why we paint--- to tell a story. this is something i always forget especially when im caught into the rush of proving myself to others or pleasing the audience or just plain painting because i want to see if i can do it. u r one of the best art teachers iv known so far

an area to begin a new session each time you sat down to work? I'd say you really captured the gentlemans spirit and personality in this piece.
This was nothing less than great work by a living master. Your generosity continues to create a storm of inspiration in all who strive to tame our

But for decades I've wanted to get space, light and calmness and the materials to start studying the SECRETS of portrait-and landscape-painting. How many years have you studied and practiced, supposedly fulltime?, to reach your present skills?

In my opinion, this is one of your best works. It really conveys a naturalistic look and mood. No artificial colours. Congratulations! The very initial stages in themselves are beautiful works of art when and where the character of the lovely old man is already there. 👍

Amazing, thank you :) When you change colours but are using the same brush, do you just wipe your brush on a rag?

It would help if you would show the photo you use so we can follow your eye from photo to painting to help understand your process.

Accidentally found you. Very glad I did. Sorry for your losing Harry. I do not paint but I admire talent and have been blessed with a good eye. I shall continue to admire your work. Jim (Chicago)

My father gave me the same advice. Have the correct, quality tools for the job and your work will be easier.
