    Start the painting with egg oil tempera on a chalk ground. After the second layer continue with oil, as did many of the old masters:)

      ..reminds me of Pietro Annigoni's technique, although he'd prepared a different sort of carrier...one which allows for the texture of the linen to show beneath the ground and imprimatura. It's worth it to seek out his technique for portraiture--- he'd perfected the egg-oil tempera technique in the modern age, and was precise with likeness but had allowed the medium to show it's virtues in many places...

    How does the artist deals with measurement? It seems very loose process, more interest in shapes and value than accurate measures.
