It's worth it to seek out his technique for portraiture--- he'd perfected the egg-oil tempera technique in the modern age, and was precise with likeness but had allowed the medium to show it's virtues in many places...

Start the painting with egg oil tempera on a chalk ground. After the second layer continue with oil, as did many of the old masters:)
