This was the first time I've personally heard anyone talk about oval nail beds and how they should be shaped to create the illusion of or in fact promote length of the overall nail! I love my short nails, but they are wide nails, thin and fragile, with oval beds. I know very little about shaping, and the first time I tried to do anything at home was a disaster. This at least gives me hope that I can maybe encourage a better, longer *looking* shape with better technique. Thank you!
This is great! I have flared nails too and I think part of what’s going on for me (besides shorter nail beds and an overall u-shape) is that the free edge is flatter than the part attached to the nail bed. It’s not actually widening, it just looks that way because less of the width is taken up by curvature. I think I see the same in your client’s photos.
I have “fan” shaped nails as well and the nail plate is flatter with some uneven curves so I’ve always had shaping issues. I’m definitely going to try this more consistently!
@@TheSalonLife I notice also on your client that, after her mani's, her nails are smoother on the bed itself...they no longer have those very small ridges (mine are like that). How did you achieve this improvement? Thank you!
Thank you for helping me to appreciate the positive attributes of my nails for the first time. I have very wide, square looking (not very feminine) hands with wide nail beds so other than a little filing, I haven’t done much with my nails over the years. This is exactly the information I needed. I will never have elegant hands but at least now my nails have a more pleasing shape and are a subtle feminine color. With continued care, I know they will only look better from here.
I always file my nails into an oval shape to give the appearance of longer nail plates. The difference you showed here is remarkable! Thanks for the video!
I have exactly the same problem! Right now I have my nails VERY short (to prevent damage from a lot of gardening work), but once the garden is put to bed for the winter, I'll try your suggestions for how to handle these types of nails... Your results were spectacular!
I have very wide nails and was obsessed with making them thinner and pointier. Recently I have been leaving them in their natural shape and I now prefer them wide. When they're long they look "big" and I love that.
My nails were just like that, but I watched a previous video of you demonstrating this correction and I’ve been following your advice and now a couple months later they’re no longer wide. Thank you so very much for this, I’m no longer embarrassed by my nails. Truly does work.
@@taeczyforeverthe one that I watched and saved is titled, ‘NAIL SHAPE. CAN IT BE CORRECTED? HOW TO TRANSFORM NATURAL NAILS [ANAA’S NAIL ADVICE]’. It was posted on April 20th 2022. It’s the same as she’s doing in this video. I had to be patient because my nails were really wide (and turning flat) and I wanted them fixed quickly, but be patient. I filed them once a a week and as Anna also recommended, I kept them painted always whether clear or colored and that seems to be helping the flatness. But seriously I can’t even believe it myself… they literally grow this way now instead of widening at the free edge. It’s crazy. You get an eye for it after doing it along with her after awhile. Just follow her videos on wide nails… keep something on them and file once a week or so. You’ll see where you need to file week after week until you notice you really don’t need to any longer. Anna if you read this, hello from the United States… you are fabulous and thank you for these super helpful videos!
this is incredible, thank you for sharing. I am a nail tech and I noticed that since I've been doing cuticle work and better shaping, my nails look so different.
I really appreciate this! I'm finally able to grow out my nails (I used to bite them when I was a kid and when I was older I just didn't take care of them so they always broke) and I'm now noticing my nail bed shape looks a lot like the person in this video. Thank you for the tips! They worked very well even on a nail newbie like me!
It’s fascinating how the growth of the nail seems to change over time! I prefer to keep my nails short but I do want to promote a longer looking nail bed. It only recently occurred to me that my nail beds might seem a bit short because I’ve always picked and peeled at them rather than properly trimming or filing, and in general didn’t really take care of them until recently. This video gives me some hope
a few of my nails have this shape and i’ve found that having my nails grown out for a long period of time can also help this issue. the hyponychium grows out over time and i feel like it can round out the curve of your nails so they don’t look as flat.
I do this when I file my nails, I didn't realize it was the technique meant to fix spatulate nails :D! My middle nails on both hands are spatulate while the rest aren't, so I always bring in the sides.
I followed your advice about how to look after my nails and it's true because my nails changed the shape after 6 months. They're more curved.Thank you very much for your advice.
Can you stop reading my mind please ? I was just wondering how to shape my nails in a different way so they wouldn't seem so large 😂 a video of how you actually do it would be great but that's already a lot of advice so thank you thank you thank you, you're amazing ! ❤
I wish we could see you doing the filing. I would love this same look, and I am forever thankful for you turning me on to Dazzle Dry, what a game changer!
I found that regular daily oiling and weekly dry manicures with cuticle remover; as you promote 😊 had a similar effect for me. It was as if all the extra dry skin and just overall dryness was preventing a natural curve and the result was wide, splayed, flat looking ends if the nail. Sort of like leaves on a tree that are starved for water and they open up the surface area to they to grab any bit they can😅
Love it ! I was looking for someone who explained what I’ve done on myself. I used to bite my nails and the skin around it that gave me a really bad shape in some fingers. I have cut the sides and some times with careful pulling it. Almost a year now I feel comfortable with my narrow long 💅🏽
I have the same issue. My nail tech did the same thing you did to hers. Unfortunately I had to stop going to her and my nails started growing out wide again. So I’ve been working on them myself and they are starting to become a little more narrowed. Inherited those nails from my dad😊
Thank you Anna for your amazing work and sharing your knowledge with us. Your videos changed my nails. Every single day While I’m looking at them I am stunned at how beautiful they are. All my life I used to think that my nails were ugly. Right now, after a few months of following your advice and some proper care, I am simply proud of them. Thank you again ❤❤❤
What a remarkable difference!! This gives me a little hope for my fat wide nails! lol I'm wanting to start trying polygel at home but I want to get my natural nails in the best shape possible before I do anything that might cause anymore issues. Thank you!! ❤
My nails are similar, but they're so weak that they keep breaking through the oval shape they naturally have (the same way you showed in the video), and some of them even break vertically. It is also really hard to find professionals that won't cut my skin when doing my cuticles so I just do it myself even if I don't know exactly what I'm doing. I hope I can improve now that I found your channel!
Wow this is amazing!!! Thank you for this video, I have almost the exact same nails; short, wide and overgrown skin covering the moons. I’m gonna work on this! ❤❤❤
Steady cuticle work and pushing back from the nail bed changed the shape of my nails and nail beds entirely, they grew straigher, more narrow, and the nail bed deepened
I experienced this as well. The way I would describe it is that since I had not had a manicure for several years, and regularly exposed my hands to water (long soaks in the bathtub, washing dishes, yard/house work, etc.), my nails had lost shape (became warped) because of the water. When I started getting into gel polish and dipped nails, at first my nail could not hold a fill, on account of the nail bed "drying out." At times I would even experience discomfort (swelling and redness) in the sidewalls, as the nail bed became more curved and thus cut deeper into the side wall. Also, an unkempt nail bed looks shorter... removing the skin from where the cuticles are will expose the full length of the nail.
I also had flared nails and I hated them, so in my late teens / early twenties I kept brutally filing the edges and cutting out the cuticles until I managed to achieve that beautiful elongated shape permanently. And it turns out it could've been done so gently 😅
ive started taking a metal or glass file to the side edges of my nails because coffins look best when i get nails done but my natural nails look best in shorter oval/almond shapes. it also helped my nails break less because a smooth rounded edge instead of a corner makes it harder to snag and break them
Thanks Anna and MSL for this awesome before and after video! This highlight on shaping the sides of free edge really helps. And where not to file on the sides. Like how you give us repeated reminders to be gentle and do a little bit at time. Thank you! 🎉❤

Wow! I have very short nail beds that are almost entirely circle. I generically have ones that slope downward if I grow then out too far. (not clubbed, just genetics). I hate going to get manicures because every time I so, they seem to want to file the side and I get ingrown nails on the side or my nail permanently changes to fanning out even worse! It’s so hope-giving to hear that the nail bed can be slowly lengthened. I’d love to have beautiful nails. I take care of them the best I can because I don’t trust nail techs to care about the health of the nail… until now. Thank you :)
Cool! I came up with this idea when I decided to finally quip biting my nails (i've been doing it for 20 years). I just started covering nails with color gel polish that covers the white line of the nails (that helped to prevent me from cleaning it non-stop and thus stopping the progress of growing) after a month or two I saw that the nails have their natural oval form and if I be patient, the skin on the sides of the nails would steadily grow with my nails, making them more narrow. Now I have nails that look as if they were never bitten!
I have the same kind of shape and following your advice I can get longer and almond shaped nails. But I can't use polish because it feels really uncomfortable. BUT: It is relentless work to keep them in this form. I have to file them every 3 days.
I have this same problem and something I found out by accident was that strong curved fake nails help correct and straighten my natural nails when they grow out.

I do have naturally long and curved nail beds but I ruined them when I was 12 thinking I can be kristen haha (simplynailogical) Thank you for sharing this with us!!! I have hopes on fixing mine ^^
My nails are similar to the gal who wrote in. I file my sides to narrow the nail. I also noticed her free edge starts further back, just like mine. In the second client’s photos, you mentioned that the nail bed attached itself again making it longer and the free edge then would be more at the tip of the finger. How does one achieve this? Same with toes? Except I have a deep free edge up the sides of both big toes. Am I cleaning under my nails too aggressively (both fingers and toes)? I love the shape of your nails, Anna, but I don’t have the same finger shape. Yesterday, was self mani/pedi day. I couldn’t stand up afterwards, but it was worth it 😜
I was searching on tiktok and saw a girl say dont scrub to much under the nail. And sometimes when the nail grows out longer the skin attaches to the nail near the free edge. Which extends the nail bed. Making it look longer. Ive had it happen to one of my nails as it grows out. But it shrinks back after a while when i started to keep my nails short again.
Friendly reminder to everyone that their nails are beautiful no matter what size or shape they are; whether they fan out or are slender; whether their nail beds are long or not. ❤
100%. I actually said that on Patreon. These nails are perfectly normal. But some people prefer to change the shape a bit and I'm here to show them how. Just like people do with make up, hair color etc.
Hi Anna, I was wondering if there's any way to make the nail bed longer? I have extremely short beds, so when I trim my nails, the skin underneath shows a lot and my hands look like a four year old's..
I have been wearing nail wraps with clear strengthening polish under and on top. Then just peel them off when they're ready without acetone. I did see some lengthening in my nail beds doing that. I injured my right thumb like 20 years ago and the nail bed was shorter ever since, but it recovered some from wearing wraps recently.

Anna, I had something life changing (ok nail life changing! 😂) happen! Last week I discovered castor oil and it’s completely changed the skin around my nails!! I’ve been using the jojoba, hand cream and Kerasol for the past year and it’s been working but I still have dehydrated dry skin and torn hangnails. As a side note, I have a genetic disorder that effects my skin and my skin tears very easily. I unexpectedly found myself with castor oil on my hands and was stunned at how my skin drank it in and how plumped my skin around my nails look now! I’m mixing it with the jojoba at night and I’m super pleased! Do you have experience using castor oil on nails? ❤❤❤
Thank you so much for your feedback! Castor oil is a very thick and slow absorbing oil. It's not ideal for the purpose of absorbing easily into the nail plate to plasticise it. But maybe it works more as an occlusive for you. Maybe try applying Aquaphor and or Vaseline? Very gentle too. Dehydrated skin can be caused by what you wash your hands with or even from irritation from certain creams. Irritation is often mistaken for dryness too.
I have the same nail shape as well and every time I get my nails done or paint them myself and the polish is removed they are soft and almost spongy and they peel and just tear apart. I have to wait for the whole nail to grow out before I can do anything again . Do you have any idea what causes this and how to fix it?
This is exactly what I need! Also, I have a question. It seems that one of my nails, the middle finger on the right hand (it has really bad arthritis, Heberden’s nodes on both sides of the joint, and a definite bend at the distal joint) has gotten wider, with the sides going very far down the sides-almost like it spooned. Is that something that you have seen in arthritic fingers??
Yes for sure the nail shape can change due to OA. "Heberden's nodes lie close to the matrix of the nails and may impinge on them causing nail changes. This occurs particularly when the nodes become inflamed, cystic or grow distally from the joint. The affected nail often shows a ridge that delimits the area where the disturbance occurs. The surface of the nail distal to the lesion on the nail matrix usually becomes concave. These changes may regress spontaneously, after antiinflammatory treatment or not at all." pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7288768/
I’m only an expert with my own nails, but her ring finger at the side looks a bit like how mine are, lifting at the sides. The only caveat I would add to your advice is to question if she has eczema or psoriasis. If she does have it elsewhere on her body, her nails will likely be increasingly affected over time.
Wooow what a difference 😮incredible!!!! But what if the nail bed is different forms 😅 my nails have a straight line and some others could be oval…it’s so weird!!! I’ve been trying to shape them but I’m kinda confused 😐
Hey...I have a question. I got a little too carried away on my pinky with the nail drill trying to remove false nails. Now I have a groove in the nail plate. 😢 Pharmacist said to use triple antibiotic ointment and to keep it clean and dry. How long do you think it will take to heal? Thanks so much❤
Yes! Mine used to grow wider from the free edge than the nail bed. So weird! Do you recommend using the kerasil ointment over the polish in a glass bottle? ❤😊
@@TheSalonLife sorry- I snuck an unrelated question in there and I suppose it looks confusing! I was wondering if you ever recommend the actual nail polish by the kerasal. It’s called multipurpose nail repair:)
Does filing your nails in a consistent way change the shape of the beginning of the distal edge? Some of my nails have a distal edge that begins with a rounded shape, some other have a distal edge that begins in a straight shape, this makes me a bit insecure about them
Holaaa me gustaría saber dónde consigues los esmaltes en gel de opi para manicura semipermanente soy manicurista en España y no se donde comprarlos. Gracias
Not only mine tend to widen, but some of them curve up. Others stay completly flat. ring finger nails have very short, squared nail beds. Only my thumb nails are good looking. It's been 3 years since I learned to do manicure myself but it doesn't do much unfortunately.
can you do the same thing on your toe nails? also i cant grow my toe nails a lot because they curve more and kinda go into my skin? how do i fix that? its probably from shoes, but when i dont wear them i dont know how to fix it
I'm not familiar with press on nails. They can damage the surface of the natural nail. In this video I wanted to demonstrate how simple nail shaping can change the shape of the nail
What if my nails are the opposite? My nails are thinner and I want them wider? (Like my pinky nail is half the size of the client’s fixed oval pinky nail) shown in the video) I haven’t seen anyone with nails like mine so I don’t really know what to do and I’d like to do nail art, but I have no space so I just use regular nail polish :’) Also, my nails do grow long but it’s like they’re so skinny so I usually just cut it to look “wider” lol

Ok I’ve got to watch this later! My nails are like this
Thanks, this was a huge help😊
These are beautiful nails i wish i had the same oval shape of nail bed
I do have naturally long and curved nail beds but I ruined them when I was 12 thinking I can be kristen haha (simplynailogical) Thank you for sharing this with us!!! I have hopes on fixing mine ^^
I am going to try this!
Take pictures!!
Thank you for this helpful video.
what about curling nails? my nails never used to curl now my pointer finger bends downward and some of my other nails curl inward
This is amazing! Thank you for sharing
You are so welcome!
Thank you very much, dear Anna....
Welcome 😊
Can you achieve this with nail extensions as well??
Nail polish shrinks when dries so a prolonged nail polish use turn the duckfeet nails into narrow nails.
Thanks Anna. Great advice as always❤
Glad it was helpful!
Just like people do with make up, hair color etc.
i have been obsessed with your videos… does gel polish work too?
So amazing! Thank you!!
You are so welcome!
I injured my right thumb like 20 years ago and the nail bed was shorter ever since, but it recovered some from wearing wraps recently.

wow thank you for the information!
Wow, amazing
Thank you
❤️
These changes may regress spontaneously, after antiinflammatory treatment or not at all."

Very nice!! ❤❤❤
What about wider TOE nails? Like more rectangular short toe nails 😢
great video!!
I’m only an expert with my own nails, but her ring finger at the side looks a bit like how mine are, lifting at the sides. The only caveat I would add to your advice is to question if she has eczema or psoriasis. If she does have it elsewhere on her body, her nails will likely be increasingly affected over time.
Здравствуй Анна, спасибо за полезную информацию, попробую так мамочке сделать, потом напишу о результате.🎉
Wooow what a difference 😮incredible!!!! But what if the nail bed is different forms 😅 my nails have a straight line and some others could be oval…it’s so weird!!! I’ve been trying to shape them but I’m kinda confused 😐
Thank you for this video. :-)
You are so welcome!
Hey...I have a question. I got a little too carried away on my pinky with the nail drill trying to remove false nails. Now I have a groove in the nail plate. 😢
Pharmacist said to use triple antibiotic ointment and to keep it clean and dry.
How long do you think it will take to heal? Thanks so much❤
Yes! Mine used to grow wider from the free edge than the nail bed. So weird! Do you recommend using the kerasil ointment over the polish in a glass bottle? ❤😊
What do you mean?
@@TheSalonLife sorry- I snuck an unrelated question in there and I suppose it looks confusing! I was wondering if you ever recommend the actual nail polish by the kerasal. It’s called multipurpose nail repair:)
Ah, I understand. The multipurpose nail repair is not a polish. It's a liquid. I recommend it in some cases but this is not one of these cases :)
Gracias

My thumb, pointer and pinky finger has round nails but the other two nails are flat 😢 any advice?
Is there any way to achieve narrow nails but with a square shape?
Not only mine tend to widen, but some of them curve up. Others stay completly flat. ring finger nails have very short, squared nail beds. Only my thumb nails are good looking. It's been 3 years since I learned to do manicure myself but it doesn't do much unfortunately.
Thanks for sharing :)
can you do the same thing on your toe nails? also i cant grow my toe nails a lot because they curve more and kinda go into my skin? how do i fix that? its probably from shoes, but when i dont wear them i dont know how to fix it
It would be nice to the person to change the shape from her wide nails to a new shape with you’re adviece ❤.
Wow 👏🏻
Wondering if it's possible to do the opposite? For me, my nails are too narrow/curved so I can only really shape them into a square
Whats weird is that I have the opposite problem. My nails grow "in" when theyre long!
What your nail is thinner, peels, and doesn’t stay thicker. What do you propose.
I have a lot of videos about problem nails. :). Please check out other videos on my channel :)
Ps. And I’m always available for individual advice www.thesalonlife.ca/services
can press on nails help?
My nail is separated, plz give me some suggestions for treatment and regrowth 😭😭

May I please beg everyone to look into clubbed nails? If you have ANY of the possible causes or think you may, please make a doctor's appointment. I'm not saying anything is wrong, but it's better safe than sorry. It took over 15 years to figure mine out, I'm just trying to save headaches for anyone out there.
Hello there :) Where all your nails clubbed or just 1?
@@TheSalonLife I'm grade 5 on all, including toes.
What, are clubbed nails potential indicators of some underlying diseases or something?😶
