      Don't remember the name of the episode but the episode with young Marcaline and sane Ice King, that episode physical enacted a change in me and made me understand just how serious a show could get. I have plenty of other favorites as well each teaching me something about myself and and helping me better understand just how much good writing can affect someone.

    I loved it for how some portions are absolutely insane to a point you can't believe the writers were allowed to make their work. Everything with magic man, his pet manticore, all the way to what happened to Earth and some side characters. It felt that when you watched an episode you had no idea how it would end.

    • @philly_sports1558
      @philly_sports1558 2 ปีที่แล้ว +332

      AT was one of the few shows where it felt like an episode could literally be about anything and anything could happen. That’s a testament to the amazing world that the show managed to create. Adventure Time was pretty much the definition of “method to the madness”.

    • @dadsb105
      @dadsb105 2 ปีที่แล้ว +130

      @@philly_sports1558 Agreed. I'd say Regular Show also had that unpredictability going for it, but imo it didn't have the same deliberate feel to it, and also lacked the same level of emotional maturity and overarching plot that adventure time did. To be fair I haven't ever seen the whole thing but that's at least the vibe that I've picked up.

    • @philly_sports1558
      @philly_sports1558 2 ปีที่แล้ว +133

      @@dadsb105 Regular Show was great but it definitely had a set formula that it stuck to pretty religiously. Mordecai and Rigby have a job to do/are doing a normal thing that everyone does, something goes array or someone makes a dumb decision, and something crazy and magical happens. Then, they learn a lesson or become more empathetic only to forget what they learned by the next episode when another crazy magical thing happens. About 75% of the show's episodes follow that formula. Don't get me wrong. It was a great formula and they did some great stuff with it. I loved Regular Show. But Adventure Time was much more nuanced and creative with how they told their stories and developed their characters. That's why (even though they were my two favorite CN shows growing up and I loved both of them), I always thought Adventure Time was better. Regular Show also wasn't that good at drama when they attempted it while Adventure Time pretty much knocked it out of the park every time they had a serious scene or dramatic moment. Overall, I would say Regular Show was consistently funnier than Adventure Time but Adventure Time was the better show. Mainly because Regular Show was basically a pure comedy and Adventure Time was like a fusion of comedy, drama, action, adventure, fantasy, science fiction, and so much other stuff.

      @@philly_sports1558 Totally agree. When I was a kid and both these shows were on, I actually actively avoided them just cuz the humor felt too crude or childish, even at a young age. As I actually explored AT a couple years later though I was really blown away by the maturity and themes that it developed throughout its seasons. Even as a kid I always loved rich, complex worlds and characters in storytelling, and that's what kept me coming back to AT for so many years. I've come to enjoy RS for what it is, and def agree that it is more consistently funny, but I will always be a die hard Adventure Time fan.

    Jake honestly said it best, "Changing is our normal state. Even if we're not changing on the outside we're changing on the inside constantly"(honestly I think Jake might be a sage, if not a bodhisattva by the end). Not a fact the show tries to hide, they put it on display with each and every character. Change metamorphosizes them into the character they will need to become. One day circumstances will come and you to reading this will have to change. But please don't be scared of it, and you can use the momentum of your own shifting soul to change the world around us. I feel sorry for Martin, he clearly used to be a good husband and loving father, I think the reason he turned out the way he did was a combination of trauma and head damage cuz we know he hit his head when hit by the guardian, plus he probably thought his son was dead and if he ever made it back to his wife she’d never understand or forgive him, so he viewed those bridges as burned, and it was probably easier to just believe Finn wasn’t actually his son and just keep moving forward. So yea, my case on why Martin isn’t actually a bad dude despite acting like the worst person in the planet 🤷‍♂️

      Martin ultimately is a bad person, and has too much baggage to try and change. But it’s also entirely true that terrible luck had a part to play in it. Losing his family is what set him on the wrong path, and the beautiful tragedy of his character is the idea that he could’ve been a completely different person later on, had that not happened. i also like how this show isn’t afraid to avoid cliches and make characters feel very insignificant. they could’ve ended it with finn and jake destroying some monster and saving all of Ooo and going down as legends, but instead the show ends on a very bittersweet note where their house is destroyed, and finn and jake, despite being the main characters, are barely remembered thousands of years later. they don’t go out fighting some big monster, they simply die of old age. BMO doesn’t even remember finn’s name thousands of years later, it’s very unlikely anyone except PB and marcy (unless they’re dead) remember finn and jake. BMO’s line in the last episode “they kept on living their lives” makes me appreciate how this show allows the viewer to interpret their own ending to the show, even after distant lands we still don’t know a lot of things, like what finn and jake reincarnated into, if PB and marcy are still alive, etc. the line also makes me appreciate how this show isn’t afraid to be realistic. if we’re given these characters (finn and jake) that we watch grow and change for 8 years, obviously we’re going to feel like they are very important, but the truth is is that time is constant and nothing is permanent, Ooo is forever going to change despite finn and jake’s deaths. their death’s aren’t the end of the story, there is no end to the story. which is particularly why i liked that wizard city was the last episode of distant lands because while finn and jake’s reincarnation would’ve been a pretty clean way to wrap up the show, the story of adventure time still goes on without them. obsidian also does a great job of putting into perspective how old PB and marcy are, they knew each other hundreds of years before finn and jake even existed, and the song “eternity with you” really opened my eyes to how long an eternity is. it is literally forever. PB and marcy are (hopefully) going to live together forever and outlive most if not all the people they know. thousands of years after obsidian finn and jake will be long gone and yet PB and marcy have the possibility of still being together. this show treats all characters with the same amount of respect and isn’t afraid to make side characters (PB and marcy) feel more important than the main characters. this show isn’t just about finn and jake, it’s about hundreds of characters and their lives intertwining with other characters and how the impact they have had on the land of Ooo, it just so happens that finn is a prime example of maturity, as i believe he grew the most out of any character on the show, which is why he is the primary focus of the show, but in actuality 90% of the character’s in the show changed by the tenth season, for better or worse

    Everything Stays is a mentality that echoes throughout the series. The characters are still the same on the outside but they change ever so slightly, daily and nightly. Finn has grown up and become a mature hero while still being the Finn that we fell in love with. Jake started taking some responsibility for his kids and grandkids, accepts who he and reaches inner peace. Ice King grew from a one dimensional princess chaser to one who shows legitimate care for others. PB grows from a tyrannical ruler with massive control issues eventually allowing her people freedom to make their own mistakes and learn from them. Marcy stops running from her past and her own emotions acknowledging and accepting them. Everything Stays but it still Changes.
    Marceline, Ice King, and Princess Bubblegum deserve their own episodes. Adventure Time needs more vids like these that legitimately analyze the character arcs.

      Agreed. After all Finn went through by that point, he was able to empathise with Fern.
      It could have been him that was turned to a sword in Prismo's plan B paradox.
      He could have been the object used for evil. He could have been the one cursed. They were the same person and he just felt so guilty about it.
      Then he's haunted by the choice he had to make. That he was forced into.
      He grew so much, as you said, but ironically if he was even more mature he would have been able to shrug off Ferns death as a 'me or him' dichotomy. At the end of it all, he freed Fern from his curse and gave him redemption.
      This was supposed to be a short reply. Fml, this show is such a rabbit hole to fall into.

      In fairness, "Just kill him already. Honestly, as heavy and nuanced as the show got in the later season, having Marceline sing a song about her dad disappointing her and ultimately breaking her heart so early on in the series was life-changing for me. Despite how common single parents are in children’s media and despite how many preteen girls are really living with a missing or problematic father, at that point in time I had NEVER seen representation of a true absent father in children’s media until Adventure Time. Now that I’m nearly 25, Marceline has come to mean so much to me for so many reasons, but it all goes back to that first Nightosphere episode. I can’t e believe how radically transformative it was for me to see a fictional character I already looked up to and thought was so badass and cool cry actual tears because her dad was a bad person who wasn’t going to change.
    Slightly smaller point but the episode where Finn goes through Marcie’s memories and catches her dad eating her fries and gently whispers “Hey man don’t do that” SENT ME. The delivery was hilarious BUT it also showed Finn seeing a really painful and really vulnerable memory and genuinely wanting to change how things went down, wanting to step in and protect the person he cares about. That moment took me aback as a kid. It made me wonder how many of my friends wished they could do that for me. It made me reflect on friends I wished I could do that for. It’s such a gentle and telling moment for Finn’s character and it makes me love his relationship with Marcie so much.

    Especially when you realize Finn has every justifiable reason to go completely insane and become the villain at any point.
    He lost and actually buried his own loving adoptive parents before the series began. (He was 12 at the start of the series so imagine what that's like to go through at an even *younger* age.)
    His biological father abandoned him Multiple Times and physically disabled him.
    His actual mother became an overprotective cyborg and lost herself and he can't actually bond with her in the way he wishes.
    He's completely the only one of his entire species within his entire lands and home.
    He never *really* finds romantic love again.
    He accidently killed his Grass Twin Brother.... twice.
    *And* he lost his brothers Jake and Jermaine as well.
    Before he was even 20 years old he became an absolute complete orphan with no family alive anymore, no connections to really be made.
    And he outright says in Together Again that Jake's Death completely broke him and he just kinda waited around to die so he could see him again.
    Finn absolutely could've become the villain of the show at any point and you could've easily justified it with all he's been through.
    And yet his heroic nature and willingness to help people keeps him on the straight and narrow and even if per his own admission, he spent basically his entire life as a broken man... He never outright becomes malicious or seems to completely have malice and hatred for everyone else.
    Because despite everything he's been through and everything he's seen.
    Finn The Human is a hero.

It's better to not feel than to feel at all but I'm trying to learn that there is more once I conquer these emotions and my mentality. It was hard to grasp the thought that life is meaningful due to all that I have lost, all the mistakes that I have made. This show was one of the first one that got me into the psychology of a character along with just how complicated a world can be, this show had episodes that will always stick with me and will always keep my love for it, each episode as it got further on got more and more personal and showed that growing up is something very painful and how life is just something that can be unbelievably unfair and people can be pushed to horrible states but it can take as little as someone willing to understand and help you.
    I've spent so much time thinking about this show and just loving the tiny aspects. I came to love characters that may have had such little screen time and began to love the expanding back story and growing relationships between characters, one of which is one I'm so happy happened which was Marcaline and Bubble gum.

      I grew up with this show so I was able to see the changing characters and the love put into each episode and just how much of a perfected show with imperfect characters it was.
      Also let me just take a second to appreciate the songs in this show, each one just strikes a cord in my heart that sparks that little kid in me who just can't wait to see Jake and Finm go on another adventure and see the goofy yet amazingly real aspects of their life and enjoy each character around them, I hope more kids can find a show like this that can teach them the complicated relationships of the world so they can understand that they are not alone

      @The Spell Alchemist I would agree with that if Avatar nailed the ending. I didn't think the ending was very good for a number of reasons. Meanwhile, Adventure Time's ending was super dope so that's where I give it the edge. Avatar is still one of my favorite shows too though. I consider Avatar, Adventure Time, and Bojack Horseman to be the holy trinity of western cartoons. Infinity Train had potential to join them but we may never see it continue unfortunately.

    • @sprawlz6466

      @The Spell Alchemist the thing that bothered me the most was probably Aang’s random energy bending ability. I don’t think it was conceptually a bad idea, in fact I think it’s actually really poetic for Aang to solve his problem by removing Ozai’s bending. But it needed WAY more development or foreshadowing or something. It really came outta nowhere and I feel like it could’ve been fine if the concept of energy bending had been introduced already.
      Then during Aang’s fight with Ozai, I don’t understand why hitting a rock put him in the avatar state. He was banned from using the avatar state after Azula shot him down. That seemed kind of random.
      Speaking of Azula, her character got no conclusion. The last time we saw her was when she was going insane after losing to Zuko and Katara, then there was nothing after that.
      I also don’t like how it ends on a cliff hanger with Zuko’s mother. That was a mystery for the whole series and they just decided to not answer it.
      Then Aang and Katara getting together at the end didn’t sit right with me. Aside from the fact that only one of them has gone through puberty, didn’t Aang “let go of his loved ones” to enter the avatar state at the end of season 2? Maybe he didn’t do it completely before Azula shot him with lightning and that’s why he still couldn’t go into the avatar state? I honestly don’t know because it wasn’t ever really explained. And if that was true, then the rock thing makes even less sense.
      I didn’t really have any problems with the show at all until the end stuff where multiple things bothered me. That’s why I still consider it to be an all time great even with the sloppy ending.

    • @sprawlz6466
      @sprawlz6466 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @The Spell Alchemist I remember the lion turtle in that library, that's fine. It's the concept of energy bending that needed more for me.
      I still haven't read the comics but I plan to at some point soon. My problem is that it just feels disrespectful to the watcher to tease something you've been teasing for the entire series AGAIN. Not answering the question seems like a cheap way to make me buy their comics.
      And I just wanted some type of resolution for Azula in the show. Like what the heck happened to her after the day of the comet? Even if she was still crazy that would've been fine, but just show SOMETHING. She got done dirty.
      I'm glad you're satisfied with Aang and Katara, I don't feel the same way. To me, it felt like emotional manipulation for the finale. It is what it is.

    • @sprawlz6466
      @sprawlz6466 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @The Spell Alchemist the guru told aang that he wouldn’t be able to go into the avatar state if he didn’t finish opening his chakras. And he didn’t so I just assumed that he couldn’t do it. He also never went into the avatar state one time in season 3 until the end.
      Also, no one knew aang was the avatar (including aang) until he was 12 right? So would the fire nation just be attacking random air benders in their country? Tbh, I feel like that’s a maybe lol. But I could also see them not touching the air benders until the comet arrived when they just did it all at once. Idk, it doesn’t seem completely off the table to me.

    i was absolutely obsessed with adventure time as a kid. like, reading the wiki for hours every day, creating my own adventure time OCs and stories, following the storyboarders, animators, composers and VAs level of obsessed. it still holds a warm spot in my heart, i think it always will.
    when finn and fire princess broke up, i learned the uncomfortable truth that a relationship is not the end goal, that my childhood hero and beloved protagonist had flaws. this show taught me compassion, to see people as people, to avoid a black-or-white mentality. i cried because of fiction for the first time with simon and marceline, i still get choked up with remember me's chord progression. this show told my angsty, lonely preteen self that life was worth living, that friendship was still out there even when i couldn't see it. this show taught my older teen self that ends are painful, lovely things that should be treasured.
    even so, i haven't even watched distant islands. i just really, really don't want to let go.

    Another aspect of Adventure Time is its philosophy. It works so well hand-in-hand alongside the ideation of emotional maturity; they both intertwine through both concept's own complexities and deeper understandings. You don’t know how long I’ve been waiting for this. I watched Adventure Time from 2010-2016, getting back into it late 2017 after hearing it’s ending announced the following year. This giving sentimental value, I rewatched the entire series at an older age and I’m still obsessed. It’s an incredible series. For a children’s show, it manages to explore philosophy, growth, mental health, democracy and monarchy, morality, judgement, honour and many more underlying themes without being directly explicit about them, making it seem poetic and makes me realise how well written some episodes are. This isn’t much to do with the video, but I just wanted to express how much I love this show and the world-building and lore presented within it. Thank you for doing Adventure Time justice and giving it some publicity, great video and brilliant analysis on Finn :)

    I remember starting this series in elementary, and loved how relatable fin was at the time to me. Though as time went on I saw him change and I hated it to a degree, which is why I left. Seeing someone I looked up to so much become so despicable. However as to means of finishing old memories I returned to the series. It was then as a senior in high school and after experiencing the cruelty and beauty of life, I realized how beautiful the series is, especially fin. Now that I’m older I and many others can relate to characters like fin. Not as playful children, but as someone who we can truly relate to on a fundamental because we understand what he goes through and who he is. And even after master pieces like invincible have made their mark in history, I don’t think anything will truly equal the impact AT has on its generation.

    One of my favorite episodes is “BMO Lost” when BMO comes across Bubble and together they try to find the way back home. Then they get back and Bubble proposes to BMO. Tragically, Bubble is interrupted by Jake.
    A few weeks before I watched this episode, I got a text from my ex’s mom. Despite our relationship ending he was still one of my best friends. And I loved him so much. She told me only that he had passed away and I had then found out that he was killed by a hit and run driver. I don’t know if I’ve ever been in such pain as that. We had such a strong connection that I could usually feel his presence even if we weren’t together. When this happened, I tried so hard to feel something or anything that I used to. I haven’t yet.
    Watching this episode, I broke down at BMO losing Bubble in that form. And when we hear Bubbles voice again, we find out that now they are free to be Air. Everywhere is Air and BMO will never be alone. I lost it even more at that part. I realized I would not feel the presence of my friend as I knew that to be, but in another form. Maybe they’ll always be there or perhaps they won’t be but it’s okay either way.

    Sometimes i feel like i grow up through these shows cause while i never experience half of the things they went through i always care and listen to those lessons even when i don't get them.

    Im really glad you mentioned Breezy. Its an episode that always stuck with me, in more ways than one, even in my young age. Maybe it was controversial, but it portrayed the controversial elements with rawness and brutal honesty. And what else can you ask for from a kids show.

      What about that episode is controversial? I never saw it that way, and I am very curious :0

      @@gaywalllbiter people were pretty upset at the fact that its heavily implied LSP forces herself onto finn in ways hes not fully okay with in the "make out" scene.

    Pajama War is one of many favorites because the platonic love and trust shown in that episode make me so happy for the characters at that stage. It felt cozy and also silly because it was like talking to a really good friend. I love this entire show with all my heart. This video was so beautiful, thank you.

    loved how you referred to "everything stays," when you said "and as people change - ever so slightly, daily and nightly [...]" at 18:53.
    love what you're doing, keep it up :)

    holy shit this video is exactly what i need in my life rn. I am really close to just giving up on all my friendships because of their neglect of my friendship. being there and accepting them and respecting their time, is the right move. i just need to figure out how to let it not bother me and let them have their alone time. thanks.

    My siblings watched this show and I saw them growing closer because of it. It’s taught them how to love and be realistic. I didnt start watching it until a year ago and regret not watching it earlier. So many beautiful life lessons.

    I've always thought that one is never late for a lesson, we just learn at the time we actually admit that we need to learn.
    Thank you for this video. This helped me with a new way of accepting a new type of relationship with people I care about.
    You are amazing
    Keep up the good work

    I grew up with stories about the hero doing no wrong and always coming out on top. Adventure came out when I was very young and I watched up to season 7 before CN moved it all over the place. It questioned the ideals of a hero and to an extent a person. Lemon Hope's journey really puts into fruition how one person doesn't want the weight of responsibility at a young age. Fire and Ice really stuck with me as a kid as it showed Finn as the bad guy. I would say this affected how I write my characters to be more than the role I give them. To be flawed and have some of those flaws be fixed through growing up. I will always call Adventure Time a masterpiece

    Exactly. I love how amazingly you describe the essence of stories in your videos. This video made me choke up, just like Adventure Time on so many occasions. I am 20 years old, but I have stress-anxiety disorder, and - while I have really helpful medication - I still REALLY struggle with change. Adventure time helped me not only to come to terms with inevitable change, but to appreciate it. It has genuinely helped me grow as a person, and it helped me accept myself and others. It reminded what it was like to be a kid. To be frustrated, annoyed, and it genuinely helped me grow up. Songs like "everything stays" genuinely changed the way I think about change, and life itself. This show is so incredible at helping you come to terms with the human condition. There are bonds made, broken, found, and lost. But, no matter what, all we can do is keep moving forward. It shows the importance of relationships, independence, staying the same, and changing. The dynamics and undertones of this show are absolutely incredible, with poignant songs to boot. I feel like Adventure Time takes the good, bad, and everything in between of life, and makes it magical again. Like when we were kids. It reminds us to keep the magic alive while helping us grow up. I love it.

    This was so good. Emotional maturity is a topic i have been trying to understand and compare to my life. This video made me realize how emotionally i matured even without realizing it.

    The thing that I love about adventure time is that the first couple of seasons are just about fin and Jake going on random adventures then as you get halfway through the show it gets abit serious and you see a story build to it inflicting how the land of ooo changes over time.

    the hall of egress, puhoy, and don’t look are among my absolute FAVORITE adventure time episodes. THE shows how finn moves on after maturing and realizing that his haphazard way of going through life was only leading him back to where he started. puhoy showed a finn that lived a whole lifetime in search of an exit, back to a reality he was used to and comfortable with. only toward the end of his pillow life was he able to accept his life there, surround by the family he was able to create, all of whom deeply loved and cared for him. he saw that his happiness had been in front of him the whole time. DL shows the progression of finn’s acceptance of how he views other people and how he views himself in consequence. the one line that i always remember in the entirety of the series is when finn turns ice kind into simon, and jake says “that’s how you view him? that’s beautiful, man.” (something like that) and finn replies “it’s hard not to sometimes”. it shows how much finn has matured in realizing the value of the ice king

    It’s so insane how real this show is, how real someone’s life in front of them changes from your own pov, how everything can be one way but the second you learn about perspective everything changes, the feelings that come with that, and everything in between, adventure time seems to get it just right, like all our little thoughts and life lessons animated, it’s so relatable in so many ways and the fact it’s even on a metaphorical level and I understood as a kid is wild to me, such a Godly show truly

    Adventure time was something very special to me when it came out. It was the few times I felt at home and at peace when I was younger. It made me feel loved with no strings attached. I felt free. And you explained it so well. Something I haven't been able to express into words for years. This show has given me the patience and the kindness to be able to grow and love the growth and love and appreciate everyone else's growth as well. No matter all of my issues, I love my life and the people around me. I love this show so much. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who can see the beauty in this wonderful cartoon.

    This has to be my favorite video of yours by far. The writing on this was sooooooo good, man.
    You managed to put into words a lot of thoughts and feelings I had about the show but that I never fully articulated.
    Not to mention the way you weaved together the analysis of so many complex and diverse characters, with every part of the video standing in its right while they each contribute to the central point of the video.
    I think this is a great achievement. And I hope you're able to take pride in it because of that.
