Your videos are fantastic, I learned how the companion certificate works at the same time learning words that can make my customers excited in getting the platinum and reserved card.
Thank you for the video, Daniel. Much to my surprise, I recently received a Delta Companion Certificate a year earlier than expected. Here's the background: I signed-up for the Amex Delta Gold card in May 2022. The card anniversary date was May 28. My plan was to upgrade to the Delta Platinum card this year, and then upgrade to the Delta Reserve card next year in order to capture both upgrade bonuses. On May 28 (the anniversary date) I used the Amex link from my account's home page to upgrade to the Delta Platinum card. The card was delivered a couple of days later. So far, nothing out of the ordinary. Since I upgraded on May 28, 2023 I was not expecting the Companion Certificate until some time after May 28, 2024. Much to my surprise I received an email from Delta on June 13 with the Companion Certificate - barely more than two weeks after the upgrade! I thought there must be some mistake so I contacted Amex about it. The Amex representative looked into it and told me that the Companion Certificate is issued based on the card anniversary date and that since I upgraded on the actual anniversary date it must have triggered something in their system to issue the certificate. He said it was perfectly legitimate and there would be no trouble using it. I am already planning to upgrade to the Delta Reserve card on next year's anniversary. All the best.
I'd love to see another video that addresses how one actually makes the booking. Is it like Southwest, where you can book the primary ticket weeks in advance, then come back later and add the companion? Or do they both have to be booked at the same time? What about miles redemption flights? Can the primary ticket be booked with miles, then use a companion certificate for P2? Seems like these would be common questions, but maybe it's just me.
Thank you for this video. Can you use the companion certificate for your own travel? For instance, if you did not have a companion to travel with or someone to give it to, can you use it for your own free travel, granted that you follow the guidelines?
Thank you for your question! I don't believe so, I'm pretty sure it must be used for a companion flying on the same flight as the main cardholder. I could be wrong though, its always worth checking with Amex.
The main issue with the 'companion certificate' is they block any dates you'd actually want to use. Leaving on a Tues and returning Monday? Sure! but Thurs-Sun is always "unavailable" in my experience.
Absolutely agree! Had the platinum card for years but could never use the companion certificate. Very limited times and dates you could use. Sounds awesome as a perk but extremely difficult to use.
It is awful! We have had Delta platinum for years and live in Kansas City and have had to let it expire several times. There are several class black out flights so even with booking far in advance can't hardly find a class flight available to use. For example with 10 flights options leaving for day there might only be 1 eligible & sometimes none. The one eligible always seems to be like a 6:45pm or later and arival at midnight. Who wants that time flight ever!
I thought the Delta Companion Certificate with the reserve card was already immediately considered first class. If i understand correctly, we will need to buy one first class ticket and then Delta will make the companion ticket first class, right?
I don't believe so, I'm pretty sure you need to Reserve card, but just note that the Delta program has recently been devalued - I have a video here- th-cam.com/video/qQVi_0wryaE/w-d-xo.html
If I received the companion certificate from having the delta platinum card, do I have to pay with that specific card when redeeming the certificate? or can I use any credit card to pay when redeeming the companion certificate?
Thanks for your question! If you pay for someones ticket they wont be eligible for an upgrade. The upgrade is for you the primary card holder. It is however possible to add a companion traveling on the same flight, this is called a Companion Upgrade. With this you must contact he airline at least 3 hours before the scheduled departure of the flight to see if its possible to receive an upgrade. Hope this helps!
@@dannyshep wow thank you for replying!! What if I add said person as an authorized user? My family flies often to Mexico through delta and the sky team alliance (Aeromexico) I figured this card would be a great choice for us
@@luiscristianfloresgarcia8319 Hi! So if you add someone as an authorized user Im not 100% sure that they will receive the ability to get an upgrade, (I need to contact Delta to confirm,) And yes Aeromexico allows for complimentary upgrades. Just note that: *You must be a Medallion Member *You can add a travel companion that is a SkyMiles Member on the same reservation *Basic Economy tickets are NOT available for complimentary upgrades Hope this helps !
@@luiscristianfloresgarcia8319 I will have to do a new comparison again soon. Main differences are that gaining access to the Delta Sky Club is more restricted, and then earning Delta Status is very difficult. I don't think the Reserve card is worth it in my opinion.
can i use the companion ticket for my wife and daughter to fly? it says the companion ticket is fully transferable. so can i book a flight for my wife and daughter and. not fly myself?
I can't down down this video hard enough. I watched the entire video hoping he would show how to use it and enter in the voucher, because Delta's way to apply it is indirect and misleading. I've searched this topic, and have not found images, or even proper steps on how to apply the companion certificate.

Thanks for the informative video on the Delta Companion Certs. Knowing which fares they work on + planning ahead is key! Thanks for the info + video!
Any time! Thank you for watching the video!
You have to update on the New enhanced Reserve where you can now use it to go to Hawaii, Alaska ect
New update coming soon!

Yeah, they dont make it easy
Absolutely agree! Had the platinum card for years but could never use the companion certificate. Very limited times and dates you could use. Sounds awesome as a perk but extremely difficult to use.
Does it only work for non stop flights? Also does it work on all Delta flights including small regional flights?
If the flight is domestic and in fares L, U, T, X, or V. it should be fine.

Yes that is correct! I just mention that it doesn't have to be a first class ticket with the Reserve card.
Thanks Daniel! Just used mine and it was super helpful to check out your videos first. :)
Thank you for watching the video! I'm glad it was helpful :)
Can you pay extra to use the Delta Platinum companion cert for first class?

I would personally use the Delta card just incase there is any problems along the way.
It has to be an American Express card but it can be any American Express card
Is the certificate valid for only one flight?
Yes I believe so!

Don't try to redeem this bullshit during the holidays, folks. It won't allow you to. Total waste of time
You also have to buy the first ticket with your own money. You can't use points 😅
I'm out of the game.
