I prefer Art Nouveau over Art Deco. I gravitate towards curves, irregularities, and an earthy color palette. Thank you for this style exploration journey.
Much as I enjoy Deco, Art Nouveau is probably my favorite decorative style. Everything looks so dang comfortable, like a pile of quilts and pillows under a gracefully drooping willow tree. I could nap in Art Nouveau, and would probably look aesthetic af while doing so. More importantly, though, I'd have a very pleasant nap!
art noveau must be my favorite artistic movement. i had classes of aesthetics and history of art as an architecture student and some important fact that my teacher said about the fall of art noveau was that the context of wars discouraged the artists to do something so full of details bc of the iminence of being destructed. definitely i'll look up to find more resources about this information, but makes sense seeing how beautifuly complex the designs were
What an interesting depiction of examining Art Nouveau. I was born in the mid 60's, therfore I get it. It can be a challenge incorpating this lovely style in our homes, yet feasible ✨️ Your curated Home is Perfection and Inspiring!
Amazing video. Thank you One of my favorite styles of all times is Art Nouveau. It gives me a fluid feeling. These organic shapes are full of life and flow naturally. It is such a beautiful art! Really gives me life :)
I always enjoy learning from Kaz Rowe, an amazing and engaging educator 😊💕 It’s difficult for me to choose between Arte Nouveau and Art Deco because they’re both so beautiful. They both also remind me of my visits to France. 😊💖
What a cool way to promote Wayfair! Great history and presentation. Very awesome use of ad money, to educate consumers to cultivate aesthetics based on real historical information. I love this.
I like *some* aspects of Art Deco, and I do own some pieces that reflect that, but Art Nouveau is my one true love. Everything about the arts and crafts movement fills my heart with joy, houses, buildings, interior design, the colors! Oh, the colors!
I came here for Kaz, I stayed for Art Nouveau 😊 It’s definitely my favorite style, I even have an elaborate tattoo of my dog in the art nouveau style. I *like* art deco, but I *love* art nouveau. My favorite painters are all pre-raphealites, so it all tracks!
Art Nouveau lends itself to the common people who live close to the earth and use humble materials. Art Deco can give an opulent affect amenable to imperialistic and authoritarian expressions of power. Art Deco glorifies technological progress, yet Art Nouveau appeals more to the imagination and naturally harmonious ways of living. So yeah, it's Art Nouveau; I feel bad for Art Deco because this isn't a fair contest.
Yet I see the opposite! Art Noveau is very expensive to reproduce, something exclusive for the elites and art deco is much more popular and easy to reproduce for the common folk. (but I do think noveau is much prettier)
The early Art Deco wasn't easily reproducible, because it was as much a handcraft movement as Art Nouveau. Later Art Deco, as spearheaded by the early Modern movement embodied by the styles of the Bauhaus, was mass manufactured, because that movement was closely tied to the rise of Industrial Design as a profession and thus the forms were designed with mass manufacture in mind.
I went to art school in Vienna, and out of all of the “new” art movements, my favourite will always be the Sezession and Wiener Werkstätte, an interesting local chapter of early 1900s art and craftspersonship. ❤
Omg where have I been?! This is my first episode, but I ALREADY know this is gonna be amazing!! I can’t wait to go back and watch the older episodes!! We have a sculpture garden in my area that is doing an Art Deco and Art Nouveau collection so this will be a great brush up on the stuff I forgot from Art History!!
Thanks for this video series! I had a ton of fun with doing up an Art Nouveau studio apartment (including plenty of Wayfair purchases) when I first moved to my city.
My very favourite kind of decor!! Oh how I wish I could cover my apartment in those swoopy swirly lines! This was really interesting! But.. 9:01 How could Beardsley be confused in 1966 when he died tragically young in 1898?
This video is great! thank you so much :) Ive always like art nouveau and I'm currently studying it for my course, this really helped me understand so much more about its origins and made me appreciate it even more!
7:47 imagine walking in a forest and hating what you see. I cant. This dude has trauma from being forced to eat his broccolie and being told to play outside more.
Oh wow, where were you when I was at college? Every two weeks I had to do a presentation in my Art Direction on a different design movement lol. And we were specifically instructed to include vernacular examples. This was really great to watch
I appreciate your video, nicely done! Please allow me to point out that Japonism is only one of the many aspects of what we now call "Orientalism". The original term, coined by E. Said in his famous 1978 book, was actually referring to the Western fabrication of the idea of the "Orient" by late 19th-century painters, writers, and archaeologists. It originally referred to romanticized Western representations of the Eastern Mediterranean and North African countries (i.e., those by Jean-Leon Jerome, Delacroix, and so on). It is linked to the colonialist politics of the imperialist societies aiming at representing the Orient as savage and therefore justifying its conquest and oppression.
I'm teaching myself to design and build furniture in my cramped apartment. I'm looking for inspiration in the look of my project room, which doubles as a recording studio. I have a fondness for Tiffany lamps, so I have purchased stained glass to build something to put on the ceiling. Thanks for the explanation of the rules of this style and history lesson. It will come in handy.
I'm art nouveau all the way, I was a teen in the 90s when 60s was back in style and art nouveau played a big part in developing my taste. My husband has no sense of taste really but I have a feeling he'd lean art deco, so I tend to furnish our place with more mid-century modern looking pieces because in some ways it's a compromise because mid-century modern tends to have more rounded edges but still looks a bit masculine.
It took a little work, but we tracked it down for you. www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/charlton-home-moore-ikat-tufted-area-rug-in-light-greenbeige-w004528271.html?piid=1150898112
I think both Art Nouveau and Art Deco have their own unique charm, and although they use (or at least originally used) different shapes and colors, I really love the maximalist flair they both bring, and how they are unlike the mostly minimalist modern world. This video also gives me a few ideas on changing up my own place (to which I can't make any major changes because landlord's rules) by putting some easily movable things there and there.
Thanks Kaz for another excellent exploration. I have a keen interest in the relationship between style and cultural zeitgeist. It seems to me Art Nouveau is a feminine esthetic, connecting to the earth as mother. Art Deco celebratetes the manly arts of the machine, power and speed. After WWI Art Nouveau fell from favor in the tide military triumphalism. It is then not surprising the Art Nouveau regained popularity during the Antiwar 1960's. These days I see a mean and aggressive esthetic being propagated, especially in automobiles. See all the snarling scowling faces on new cars. Perhaps a topic for a future video. Best wishes.
I love both! Art deco is a bit easier in DIY for me, though. I upcycles my grandpa's old side table and did the pattern by hand. It was a lot of work 😂
Hey, I am writing an essay on Art Nouveau and in particular the architecture of Victor Horta. Your video was really informative and detailed, and very comprehensive. Would you be able to send me the sources/literature you used for the making of this video? That would be really helpful, as I don't seem to find that many good sources on the topic of Art Nouveau. Thanks in advance!
I grew up in the 70's and hated that era of design. Even back then everything felt cheap and plastic. When I was a teenager I assisted a neighbor lady as she maintained her elderly mother-in-law's home. It was original, classic art nouveau and I fell in love. I polished that winding, hand carved wooden staircase with true love. Scrubbed the soft pastel tiles with fascination. Hell, all of the woodwork took my breath away. She had an art nouveau grand piano! I wasn't even allowed to wipe it down for fear that I'd mess up the french polish. All my life I've continued to be drawn into that style, but resisted until now. I knew my husband wouldn't like it and I finally found a way to bring in hints and harmony into the master bedroom without going overboard. He's told me many times that he's surprised how comfortable that room is for him. Nice Tiffany lamp with vines twining around the base, a restored chandelier, an art piece made out of original tiles, and a faded carpet half hidden under the bed. Just a bit here and there. I do want to put in an art nouveau fireplace, but we'll see.
I'v heard that the posters and album covers of the 60s and 70s described as art nouveau on acid and living through those times, I can see that (and I say that with a big smile).
Born and raised in Vienna, I've always been loving Art Nouveau (in Austria called "Jugendstil"). I adore Otto Wagner's wonderful buildings and the unique art of Gustav Klimt.
Is there any relationship between Art Nouveau and the Pre-Raphaelites? I've been getting into the latter, recently, and there seemed to be a lot of ideological overlap, but maybe that was just the spirit of the time.
I adore both Art Deco and Art Nouveau, but Art Nouveau definitely edges out Deco for me. I just love the natural themes, shapes, and colors so much. One example I always cite for a near perfect display of Art Nouveau is the 2009 movie Chéri (which is based on writings by Colette) - while the movie may not have been a smash hit, the set design is *to die for*, an absolutely gorgeous rendering of the form.
I prefer art nouveau for interior design and art deco for fashion! I'm drawn to the natural forms and colors of art nouveau when it comes to my own living space + the artwork I admire. However, I can't resist wanting to imitate a bit of old Hollywood glamor when I get dressed.
Art Noveau all the way! You just gotta not be afraid to commit yourself to it. Btw. fun fact: In german it's called Jugendstil which literally translates to "youth(full) style"!
I love Art Nouveau and Art Deco. I like Art Deco architecture a bit more, and I like Art Nouveau furniture and decorative pieces a bit more. Also, on the subject of Lord of the Rings, elves are Art Nouveau and Dwarves are Art Deco, yes?
I prefer Art Nouveau. In the '70s, there was a style trend towards the 1920s, and Art Deco was seen in Disco decoration, also in advertising graphics and fonts. I just never liked that scene, I was a '60s kid who really didn't like how things started to feel in the '70s. I never went to Haight-Ashbury or lived the hippy lifestyle, but I loved all the old Victorian houses in San Francisco, and stained glass, and the Mucha posters. Moving past all that into the '70s, it all seemed really cold and alien. The music got bad, too.
Art Nouveau got Grooooovy before it romanticized a simple domestic lifestyle. 😂 It's no wonder I love both retro pop art and the cottage core aesthetic. They both derive from my all-time favorite style, Art Nouveau.
Art Nouveau reminds me of Victorian Fantasy. Like the fairies and trees of whimsical fantasy. I like the style but Art Deco is more of the style I prefer over the two. Art Deco is the masculine where Art Nouveau is the feminine.
Art Nouveau or Art Deco? Wow! Tough decision! I guess it depends on my cocktail of the moment. If I’m sipping a dry martini, I prefer Art Deco, but if I am indulging in the seduction of the green fairy, then it can be nothing less than Art Nouveau.
Art nouveau influenced our region in the past very much, and the political changes led to a lot of the old curvy "elven" houses being destroyed and replaced by brutalist and socialist realist blocks... It feels just bad... removing the yellow road stones and the shiny metalic grey cobble cubes for the grey and flat ashpalt, the yellow and colourful houses for grey and tan blocks...
Art Nouveau inspired a multitude of design styles: Cottage Core, BoHo, GranMillenial: What’s your favorite?
I prefer Art Nouveau over Art Deco. I gravitate towards curves, irregularities, and an earthy color palette. Thank you for this style exploration journey.
Art Nouveau…a bit of an obsession of mine. I get so excited when it’s featured, well, anywhere! Thank you so much for the video.

I adore Art Nouveau! It is absolutely my favorite design style. I wish it were easier to get some of those architectural elements into a home.
Amazing video. Thank you
One of my favorite styles of all times is Art Nouveau. It gives me a fluid feeling. These organic shapes are full of life and flow naturally. It is such a beautiful art!
Really gives me life :)
Never thought I'd watch a wayfair youtube channel, but Kaz has me hooked.
I always enjoy learning from Kaz Rowe, an amazing and engaging educator 😊💕
It’s difficult for me to choose between Arte Nouveau and Art Deco because they’re both so beautiful. They both also remind me of my visits to France. 😊💖
I love Kaz Rowe!! Please have her on a million more episodes.
We have a start, with at least four more episodes coming soon!
What a cool way to promote Wayfair! Great history and presentation. Very awesome use of ad money, to educate consumers to cultivate aesthetics based on real historical information. I love this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@wayfair Thank You.... Appreciate & Intriguing.
Unexpected Kaz Rowe to start my day ❤️❤️❤️ not even the catchy jingle could get me here so quickly lol
I like *some* aspects of Art Deco, and I do own some pieces that reflect that, but Art Nouveau is my one true love. Everything about the arts and crafts movement fills my heart with joy, houses, buildings, interior design, the colors! Oh, the colors!
Great video and narrative. Love Art Nouveau!
Yay I was hoping there would be an art nouveau episode! 💜
I adore Art Nouveau and have for many years! I've always wanted a house decorated in Art Nouveau but could never source the pieces I wanted.
LOVED all your outfits for this video 💛
Great presentation as always! Thank you Wayfair. Thank you Kaz! Art Nouveau please.
You dont know how helpful this video is. I have to write my design test on art nouveau

Interesting Read... Thanks for sharing it.
I can totally see the Difference between them.. Appreciate this mini breakdown of it.. 👍

I’d love to see an episode on the arts and crafts design style!

Thanks for watching
Thanks Kaz 🙏🌈🥰💝 Love the Art Nouveau & Art Deco twins! ❤❤

Amazing video! Thank you!

Off topic, but…freakin awesome map shirt:D

I had no idea that my design aesthetic was Art Nouveau inspired! Thanks for the lesson!
Give me art Nouveau every time; it is elegant with barely a sharp corner in sight.
I'm art nouveau all the way, I was a teen in the 90s when 60s was back in style and art nouveau played a big part in developing my taste. Hey Kaz, could you do an episode on Dark Academia?…. Please? I could be wrong, but to me, it seems a perfect fit for you.
I love both! Art deco is a bit easier in DIY for me, though. I upcycles my grandpa's old side table and did the pattern by hand. It was a lot of work 😂
My spouse and I both love 1920s fashion and art, and we say we are Art Deco and Art Nouveau, respectively

thanks Kaz! in the future, can you please link the specific vid you referenced? for example, in this vid you reference a gal called (i think) areal
Ariel was the host for the first series, so you can find her on this channel!
isnt Kaz a treat?!
The rug from Wayfair mentioned towards the end. Does Wayfair still sell this rug and how would I find it to purchase one like it?
Today Kaz is displaying a fashion i like to call "middle school art teacher" (affectionate)
Art deco to look at art nouveau to live with.

Okay thanks, Art Nouveau is my life now
The Belgian architect Victor Horta made some astounding buildings in Art Nouveau .
I wish you would have mentioned the Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes.
7:36 is that why Steampunks include goggles in each and every outfit when moving back t the 1890's?
I adore both Art Deco and Art Nouveau, but Art Nouveau definitely edges out Deco for me. I just love the natural themes, shapes, and colors so much. My personal style within my home is totally Art Nouveau, but if I step outside, I’m going to want Deco.
Art Noveau all the way! You just gotta not be afraid to commit yourself to it.
Btw. fun fact: In german it's called Jugendstil which literally translates to "youth(full) style"!
Definitely a fan of art nouveau , it is artistic to me as it is not about perfection.
I love Art Nouveau and Art Deco. I like Art Deco architecture a bit more, and I like Art Nouveau furniture and decorative pieces a bit more. Also, on the subject of Lord of the Rings, elves are Art Nouveau and Dwarves are Art Deco, yes?
This is a great video
i live for art nouveau!
LOVE ART NOUVEAU
Lovely.
I adore Art Nouveau, only second to Art Deco.
I love history by sarah ❤
Aubrey Beardsley was very dead by the time of the V+A show in 1966. I’m not sure how he was confused?
Elves are art nouveau, dwarves are art deco.
Nah. Dwarves are more industrial pipe-art.
I prefer Art Nouveau over Art Deco totally! It gives a vibe of Elven buildings and architecture well art deco is for Dwarves.
I always like to compare art nouveau and art deco to elves and dwarfs
I prefer Art Nouveau. In the '70s, there was a style trend towards the 1920s, and Art Deco was seen in Disco decoration, also in advertising graphics and fonts. I like Art Nouveau, but I don't like the 60s or 70s pop version lol. Lord of the Rings and Rivendell is definitely my favorite design.
I like arte nouveau but I don't really like sharp angles, I like flowing designs,
Yellow ceramic tile ginkgo earrings
Art Nouveau
I prefer art nouveau forever and ever.
Art Nouveau 100%
