    i’ve been self-studying art nouveau for a while as i work on a current project inspired by the movement. this video is really comprehensive and practical. i really love the tip on creating depth by overlapping the subject with the frames and using different line weights. thank you!!

    Francis, your knowledge, and your art skills never cease to amaze me! Art Nouveau followed by Art Deco are, and have always been, my favourite eras. Many years ago it was the household items and jewellery I would notice, but these days, the art as shown by you has also piqued my interest, but also overwhelmed me with the sheer amount of detail. You broke everything down so well and that helped with this feeling of being overwhelmed, that back then was meticulously hand drawn and coloured. Just imagine making an obvious error with the final stroke of your pen! Arghhhh!!! It doesn’t bear thinking about. Your sketching skills are another area I admire so much. I understand that years of practice and hard work go into these skills, but honestly, you were gifted a huge amount of natural skill through your family as I know both Mother and Grandmother were/are extremely talented. You must have been brought up within a riot of colour! What an interesting series to make. I will watch and enjoy, but alas not join in. My hand tremors and sudden jerks are just not conducive to such accuracy. However, being able to watch, listen and learn from you will be lovely. Are you currently still at original address? Thank you for taking the time to make such wonderful, and very unique videos. 🎨🖌️👩🏻‍🎨😊❤️

      Aww thank you Anita 🤗🌻
      Your comments always make me smile and mean a lot to me!
      I felt the same as you described with Art Nouveau for a long time and decided to battle this head on by analyzing and dismantling some paintings step by step. It is the one style I keep coming back to and wish I could emulate with less effort. As with so many things in life, practice makes perfect (or at least better) and that's what I'll do!
      In my new flat I will also make some Art Nouveau inspired ceramics (or air dry clay sculptures), I'm already very excited for that :)
      In fact for the longest time I thought it was normal to have linocut materials, 10 pounds of clay and all these different materials at home 😂 I was very fortunate to have access to those so early.

    I also would love to do a study of the simplified facial lines chosen in Art Nouveau and how to narrow in on what elements you keep and which ones you don’t when drawing a portrait in this style. Thank you again!!☺️🫶🏻

      Awesome idea, Diana! I find the faces very difficult as well. I am too heavy handed with watercolors and would need another medium for the finer details, but an analysis would be helpful either way 🤓 I'll write it on my lengthy video-to-dos 💪

      Art Nouveau really achieved its goal of creating a holistic art style that encompasses all those different artistic disciplines. I am still looking for a book that covers only glass and metalware in this time. If I ever find one about iron, I'll let you know 👍

    What a huge amount of information, Francis! Thank you so much for posting this. I’ve recently become besotted with the paintings of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and am attempting a watercolour painting in his style. I understand that CRM’s pictures were outlined in pencil rather than pen. Was that something specific to him, do you know? I’ve also been trying to find out what paper he used. Either it was white paper that has discoloured with time, or he put a wash down first. The more I research, the more questions I have. I can find lots of information about CRM and the Glasgow style, but very little about his painting methods. Any tips gratefully received.

      @FrancisArtStudio  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Genny! Thank you for reaching out, and with such an intriguing request as well :) I went to archive.org (as I so often do) and looked through some books about Mackintosh. Somehow I thought he was a glass artist first and foremost, because I mostly encountered those works so far. I am very enarmoured with the austrian art nouveau period and don't know as much about the movement off-continent as I do about the secession movements in central Europe. But I always love to learn!
      From my understanding Mackintosh's approach with pencil is so prevalent, because he came from an architectural background and kept some habits throughout his life. He only slowly made his way into painting and other arts and crafts and I found a lovely extract about it from Pamela Robertson in this book, which you can borrow and access with a free account: archive.org/details/charlesrenniemac0000unse/
      It starts at the book page 291 and is called "The Making of a Painter". It's a very interesting read and I hope it gives you a good starting point for further research.
      I would love to know which paper he used as well! Sometimes when I use Hahnemühle paper I can't quite believe how many great artists painted on those as well. Or who else might have used DaVinci brushes. It gives me a sense of connection to other artists throughout time.
      Best wishes
      Francis 🌻
