  • What mods should I do to my Porsche 911 Carrera Targa? In this video I go one-by-one through every mod I plan on doing to this car eventually from the very mundane and small (such as cleaning up glue around the doors) to the more expensive and time-consuming like lowering the car to a more aggressive stance. I tried to include screenshots of all the products I plan to use and include any websites to help other enthusiasts who may be looking for these products. I truly hope that this video helps other 911 owners and please comment if you have any recommendations or if I said anything incorrect or that you disagree with. Thank you for watching!

I have Porsche 20mm spacers and longer studs on the rear of my 79' Targa and 32mm spacers on the rear of my 82' Coupe. Dansk Sport Muffler on the 82' and custom stainless set-up on my Targa.

Nobody says they enjoy the 915 over the G50 in N/A cars, but it’s def not worth the money to upgrade from an already good trans. Spacers sound tempting, but don’t cheap out on wheels and tires just sacrifice that $300 key. It makes a huge difference and that thick tire definitely makes the car hug turns better. If you do some horsepower upgrades like exhaust/chip/or some more I’d also look into the turbo brakes, not necessarily a must, but I like the balance and you can have a good OEM mod. A/C is an uphill battle, mine went up in smoke 3 years ago and I’m just happy my sunroof still works.

Good list of things. I've done pretty much everything on your list to my 84 and then some. I would suggest just adjustable spring plates for the rear so you can lower it and corner balance super easily. I personally like my two sets of 17" wheels. I have CCW and RUF reps, don't really care for Fuchs. My car is probably way more track oriented than you would ever do, but it wins me races :P Oh and if you go with new torsion bars I'd probably recommend 22/28 or so. I run 23/30 and it's extra stiff. I've thought about putting content on youtube and showing the world my cool stuff.... maybe one day. Oh and I've had my 911 for about 20 years now (same exact car)

Convert it to a Euro spec. Headlight change, lowering the suspension, trashing out thoes ugly rubber brick from the rear bumper and have the nice Euro reinforcment guards.

Love the euro ride height and smaller bumperettes but not a fan of adding the side markers. I like the cleanliness of no side markers.

    • @NZotyoka81
      @NZotyoka81 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Well you already have sidemarkers on the front what we don’t have here in Europe. The 3.2 engine also makes 231hp here but i would not suggesting changing the entier ignition system because the cost of converting it into a full Euro specs wouldn’t be worth the extra 20hp. I forgot to mention the factory sports seats if you will find a decent pair for a resonable price don’t hesitate to buy them because they worth it. I saw the 930 video what you have made about considering to buy, well if you were here in Europe i would say go for it, but knowing well how the things are going overthere as i have lived there for few years, i can confirm that you have decided well. I went through a lot difficulities with my Jaguar what i had overthere. There was a shop were couldn’t even can tell if my coolant level is okay or not so they kept constantly draining it. It was just one problem from a the many what i had to face. The Turbo 911 is my ultimate dream car, sadly i hadn’t have one yet, but once i was lucky to drive a beautiful 1986 turbo WLS with a set of nice RUF speedline wheels. The car was in Meteor Grey which is extremely beautiful becaus it’s changing it’s color as the sun is going up and down. It had factory burgundy interior with heated sports seats. It’s also had 325-330hp as it was a WLS version. It means factory increased power. It was wild, and insane experience to drive it because it pulls way better than the US spec 930 and sits low very low.😊I appreciate your intend to keep your car original as possible along with a few changes just to make better what is already perfect. I saw guy on youtube who has a black 930 and he is making dumb things like ripping out the factory leather sports seat and changing them into a cheap junkie after market cloth sports seat just because he has a non working ac. He said it’s cheaper than a new retrofit ac system. He doesn’t even know why he has a faulty ac just want to ripping out the whole and change it completely. I looked up on ebay where you can buy factory oem rebuilt compressor for only $400 or a valve for $120 for example. The worst scenario would cost him at max $1500 with everything. The factory sports seats are going for $3500-$5000 depending from their shape. Anyway i told him it’s his car after all but i don’t see where he creating values because on this level it’s really matters. Keep up making nice Porsche contents i truly enjoying them. Have a great Day!

@@dr.kylestanley Yeah man! Go for it because their prices are going up rapidly. Here in Europe they goes from €100k- €350k depending their conditions and rarity. I saw a white WLS with 330hp for €187k which is around $200k.

Awesome car. I had a '78 SC for 175,000 miles. My reaction to your modding ideas:
    1. Lights: H-4s more opposing driver friendly, look great, and provide plenty of light
    2. Tires/wheels: forget spacers; rather, get two 8" Fuchs wheels for the rear axle, put your 7s on the front, and your 6s in the garage. More rubber on the road which will come in handy when you chip it. The lug nuts look stock and need to be beefy as they are torqued to 90 pounds.
    3. Suspension: lower it consistent with running one-half degree of negative camber on the front axle and one degree negative camber on the rear. The camber mods improve handling - more tire contact on cornering. Or you may not want to lower it because if you do and install spacers or 8s on the rear, the rear tires will probably make contact with the fender on occasion.
    4. Steering wheel: you'll like it better if you wear driving gloves but that does not address your security concerns. Or how about kill switch?
    5. Dash lights: dim dash lights enhance night vision
    6. Air conditioning: remove (two screws) the a/c inlet splitter on the interior "firewall" and throw it in the glove box. Way more effective a/c.
Recommend: with the chip you'll be getting more power on the high end of revs and, consequently, you'll want to be aware of you rpm as you head toward the 7,000 rev limiter. To make it easier to see the high rev portion of your tach, simply grip the edge of the tach and turn it counterclockwise until 7,000 is in the 12 o'clock position.
Glad to hear you're double clutching and heel-and-toeing your downshifts. That's pro driving technique. Enjoy!

Fabspeed Maxflow performance exhaust system and catalytic converter bypass, dual outlet. Best decision ever. Sound is amazing and the cat bypass is a massive improvement, especially when you order the Steve Wong chip for performance exhaust and cat bypass. You can pass smog by just taking the bypass off for test then put it right back on after. Other then that I've done almost all the other mods you discuss, they are all great 👍. I put a ducktail spoiler on my 85 Targa as well. Have fun!

I just purchased my first air cooled 911. Targa in GPW like yours but a couple of years older. I don’t think a Griffith’s AC redo can overcome the tiny side vents! Subtle mods that don’t detract from the original seems like the right game plan. I like your straightforward presentation style and you have obviously mulled things over carefully and done a lot of research.
Something that would make a great video for first time owners would be how to pick a good mechanic to keep these cars sorted. Sounds like yours did a thorough refresh of the engine and 915. It would be cool to have him on as a guest for his perspective as well. You and I live in major cities so sometimes it makes choosing a good mechanic even harder! So many who say they can work on them!

Beautifully kept car and while originality is important to preserve the value of these vehicles, happily most of the suggested mods are mainly of a functional nature. A slightly smaller steering wheel is a good idea to give the steering a more precise feel, and when you properly service the existing air conditioning it will work fine without needing further aftermarket stuff. Of specific importance is to check/replace the airco gas lines that run between the front and back of the car as they go porous after one or two decades.

I highly recommend the WEVO short shifter. If you’re planning on getting an m&k 2 in 2 out muffler then a stereo head unit becomes moot, unless you’ve got an amplifier. I bought a continental head unit just to clean up the look but can’t hear it while driving.

Always interesting what newer owners are thinking with updates or fixes. Our 1987 had a “Nardi” shift nob put in from the original owner. People seem to notice it? You have painted hubs which was an additional cost option. We also experienced door rubber shrinkage and window seal degradation. Ours has 15 inch fuch rims, and found reasonably priced Kumho tires for it. Also door cavities tend to crack 😞.

Great video Kyle. I recently purchased an white/black 89 G50 Targa on Pcarmarket visually identical to your car and am constantly feeling the need to make small improvements. I own two other 911s which are much newer and faster but I find myself drawn to taking the air cooled over the other two regularly. Just as you described, there is something about the sound, smell and feel of the older car that is pure magic. So far I have replaced the headlights with amber H4s from Bromberger, bought the 28mm rear spacers from H&R (have yet to install them) and changed out the tail light lens for Euro style versions. I am considering the exhaust , a Carrera side decal and a few other things. First I need to take apart the passenger door to repair the known issue of power window failure (big undertaking). I enjoyed your video and completely share your passion so I hope you do an updated video to showcase your project. Cheers!!

"the magic stick" had me laughing out loud. I had one both the frunk and rear decklid. I put the turbo tail struts on and even if they start failing, due to them being made to handle the extra weight of a turbo tail, they will hold up just a regular decklid for a few more years. Get the Rennline stick and be done with it nowadays.

While I loved how they work, I've since been warned by two different mechanics; seems that the 356's had manual struts and they have a history of people who don't know how they work trying to close the lid by applying more pressure... ultimately bending the hood. As the 911's come hydraulic standard, greater odds of an unknowing mechanic/friend/etc. unintentionally bend your hood. I ultimately reverted back.

The offset in the gas pedal vs the brake pedal is on purpose. When your on the track and threshold braking your pushing the brake pedal to the floor. When your braking that hard the brake pedal is perfectly lined up with the gas pedal for heal-toeing. If it were set up to be more comfy for casual driving it would be a real let down for racing.

All functional and perfectly reasonable modifications, most importantly they are all reversible. Always hang onto any consequential OEM parts that have been removed due to modifications. Keep them so they can be sold with the car or replaced prior to selling it. (btw, NEVER EVER sell it.)
This is all considering for the fact that this is a significantly collectible "investment" vehicle these days!
I got my all original 1986' 911 SC Targa at 82K miles 18 years ago with my Father.....for 15k cash. Almost identical to your beauty. Aside from an era specific OEM Carrera "whaletail" and being black in color. It's really amazing to see what they are selling for now. I still need to swap out that horrible Blaupunckt tape deck for something enjoyable however. Enjoy her & godspeed. ;-]

it doesn't always go into first easily because we don't have synchros in 1st great so I usually only downshift to 1st if I am coming from 2nd gear. I don't do 3rd, 4th, or 5th to 1st.

Lowered my '78 SC Targa a couple years ago and it was $800 with alignment from one of the local Porsche specialists.

@@dr.kylestanley Right on. Btw, I have had quite a few of the mods you are planning to do as well.
Most of the work was done at Sonderworks (the company that designed the targa cover you are looking to buy).
Ditched the sugar scoops and went for the H4 with Euro rings painted to match the car. Would prefer to have more light though. LEDs may be the better move.
Had 3 point harnesses installed in the rear for my boys.
Had the top redone. Sonderworks did the top, but Dan provided the proper seal.
Went for the Conti Bluetooth stereo. I like it. New speakers.
Replaced the window seals.... (Just to note, I did them a couple years ago, and the cloth ones at the window have already faded). If yours are just faded, but still in good shape, not sure I would replace.
Replaced all the hood/lid struts. Kept the hydraulic and so far, so good.
Lowered the car. Originally, they went below Euro height, but I had them bring it back to Euro ride height. Love the current stance.
      New bushings on shifter.
      Adjusted pedal height.
      Seats re-upholstered.
Added fire extinguisher and Rennline seat mount.
Lots of other things as well, but those are the ones I remember off the top of my head.
Basically, like you say. Stock plus. Would maybe like to do some new Elephant racing suspension upgrades (just the resto), and maybe some more cosmetic things from Carbone and such.
Anyway, love a targa. Wish my wife wasn't so afraid of the sun so I could take my top off more often. 😀

Big ticket items first - not last! - Rims - Suspension - Exhaust - The people advising you to "just" get wider rims are right. Get the new 18´ Fuchs - Do that one upgrade and save up for the next, instead of throwing money at steering wheel conversions? Leave the retro stereo in place, until you can bring yourself to pay up for the Porsche Classic. The little screen is more than enough, even for navigation. It´s looking retro as intended and fits in your dash. Hence the small screen. Billet gas cap - Why on earth would you add weight where it does no good? There´s a reason Porsche makes it out of plastic. You need to control your OCD. Same goes for alu pedals. Regarding your 400 USD car key idea - Just forget about it! Spend the money on the car instead. A new stainless exhaust is a good investment. But not with the centered exhaust pipes. It looks ridiculous, because it mimics a Boxter and much newer cars. As mentioned by @stuffa01 below, reupholster the Targa Top in weather proof canvas, looks amazing on these cars. Last but not least; Do not chip the car unless you are 100pct sure the engine is in top condition.

    • @belledetector

great advice. Thanks! Since I posted this video, I have already changed my mind about some stuff. I definitely wouldn't go with 18s on this car though. • @overbuiltlimited
      @overbuiltlimited ปีที่แล้ว +1

18" Fuchs are okay, but center exhaust looks "ridiculous?" You tell him not to get a billet gas cap, presumably because of weight, then turn around and tell him to get 18" wheels which weigh 6 pounds more EACH!? That's not very consistent.
With 18's a G body would look all out of proportion. Even 17's look too big. I know because I put the 17" Fuchs from Fuchfelge on mine. I went back to 16's. Something else that I don't see anyone talking about is that the spokes on the 17 and 18 inch Fuchs are different than the 16's. The spokes are more flat which also changes the look. I didn't notice this until seeing them in person, but it is visible if you look at the wheels on their website.
Another con with 18's is that the ride quality will/take a big hit. Mine suffered greatly with 17's. I can only imagine how much worse it would be with 18's. These cars have primitive suspension even with a top notch set up and a the tires absorb a lot of shock.
As far as center exhaust, if you don't like the look fine. To each their own. On my car, a highly modified hotrod, it was the right choice. Bursch GT3 exhaust with a GT3 titanium muffler. They even made custom heat exchangers for the exhaust so I didn't have to sacrifice my heat. Superb workmanship and it fit the theme of my car very well.

If you take the time to learn to drive it correctly (PCA classes) all the potential is there to scare the shit out of yourself. Believe it or not Porsche engineers knew what they were doing on G body's. Want speed - lose weight.
