  • What is it like owning an air-cooled Targa? This is what I wanted to know when I was thinking about buying my 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa. I didn’t find the video I wanted so I thought I’d make one for others who are on the fence about buying a Targa. In this video, I was doing a sunset drive around the hills of Orange County, California to talk about my experience with owning an air-cooled Targa. I discuss the Targa top, handling, seat belts, wind noise, headroom, and a few other topics. If you like this video, please give me a thumbs up and subscribe to the channel. Thanks for watching!

I have a 77’ Coupe and a 88’ targa. I drive the targa most of the time. Sure the coupe looks better, but nothing beats a drive in the targa on a cool evening.

there is something so special about these cars. I agree the coupes look better too. Helps to have one of each =)

I'm definitely a motor head and old Porsche guy, and my wife is a Porsche girl. When I first met her, she had an early '66 911 Coupe. We've had many coupes and targas over the last 30 years together, including her '71 911E Coupe that I traded a military guy two vintage surfboards for! We have kept only my 1976 911S Targa in Peru Red and her 1982 911S Targa in Pacific Blue. We love Targas and never listen to the snobs who down Targas. Driving them is more fun than coupes, especially where we live in Hawaii. I love all 911's, but especially like my Targas because they rile the purists. I also like my 911's original paint, street worn and driven. I liked your video and agree about Targa's. Aloha from a Porsche guy who loves the topless option.

If you want the ultimate targa experience, get a 914. Stows away in the trunk with room underneath - AND there's still the frunk space too.

I owned an 86 Iris Blue coupe but sold after kid #3 came along. I then went after my dream, a 964 Targa. Purchased a 91 with 34K in 1998 and still own it today, 144K. I live in TX so I keep the top on using AC more than I would like. Just to confirm, my top leaked when I got it, leaked after had Dan refurbish it and still leaks after I just replaced the front and rear rubber seals on the wind screen and targa bar. Thankfully, it is garaged so only have to deal with the leaking if I’m caught in the rain. I recently had the car ceramic coated. One of the best things I have done. It looks amazing and is so much easier to keep clean. My plan is to never sell so I do my best to keep it well maintained. I generally don’t do mods. I only upgrade when I have something that needs to be tended.

Nice Targa review, we have had our 87 since 89. Had Targa Dan from NJ repair ours also, did a nice job 8 years back. Exterior vinyl was ok but the headliners was falling apart (always garaged). We also basically keep our top off in an old tv box in the garage during our spring, summer, fall driving months. Just got our odometer repaired as the plastic parts get old and breakdown, another person in NJ repaired it a couple weeks back and did a good job, “eztronics” EBAY. Also the bearing in the steering wheel is plastic and will also dissolve ( break apart) and someone manufactures metal ones. When your steering column “wiggles” you’ll know. A diy project. There is a top you can buy that has suction cups that you can attach when parked to cover the top from sun, we got that when we purchased the car from previous owner. Good alarm system might be considered for your car. Good luck, we really like driving ours when we can. Btw, our german shepherd lays low when riding in the back, too much air circulating, lol. Edit, plus get two foam pieces to even the back by the hump, then place the top on top of it - no crinkling.

At 1:35 what is being said? "It's surprisingly [?] windy?" Doesn't sound like "not" but I'm not sure what else fits in there or if it's maybe a small stutter saying it *is* windy. Thanks! Edit: OK, you elaborated later. All set, thanks again.

This is the most California Porsche ride-along ever. All the fussy worry over the top, it messes my hair, my hair was just done before the video. 🤣For some reason I giggled picturing your little one bouncing around in back while you send it through the twisties. Haha. Take it easy. But my dad used to pile us in the back of the station wagon we somehow survived. I think your targa is really nice, enjoy it.

My wife's single-owner 87 is a hell of fun drive. The Targa just looks better than the convertible and provides the same open air experience without the wind and noise turmoil. Also in So Cal and have never folded the top. Just check the extended weather report and leave it in the garage. Thanks for the video!

I have owned a 1981 911SC Targa since new. 54k miles. Just park it with the top on and store the top in the trunk when driving. The top does not wrinkle as it straightens over night.

I enjoy my 1970 Targa, hot rodded and fast. I would rather have a coupe but I admit driving without the top is nice. I do enjoy the way it comes on and off almost fun to install and hear the clicks and see the way it fits so precisely.

Every time I bought a target they would say it’s a girls car I was a single guy at the time and said if girls like it I’m happy I kind of reversed the negative vibe because I always love the Targa but most people that said it was a girls car never owned a Porsche. Targa is one of my favorites I get it the coop is very nice I love the lines but let’s be real we live in America it’s not like I’m going to race I work 9 to 5 job come home just like to go through the gears in the twisties and that my friend put a smile on my face and I think the Targa is a very timeless vehicle and love the bubble back window if this doesn’t make you happy then I don’t know what will

I just bought a ‘88 Targa, from OC! Your videos helped a lot. Thx!
I notice some squeaks and vibration buzz/noise when you’re driving, even without the Targa top. Do you leave them be or have your tried to quiet down these small rattles/squeaks?

Congrats! Hope to see you at a porsche meet up! Some of the squeaks you here may be my phone holder but these old cars definitely squeak. Certain ones can be fixed but others I say are “part of the charm” ☺️

86 Targa owner here. I had my roof redone, and have folded it up over 100 times. Is there a lil crease? For about 5 mins. The heat smooths it out no issues. I wouldn’t leave it folded over night, but on a trip where I’m at, it’s always with me.
