#DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.
Rules:
1: No discrimination or hate speech.
2: No affiliation links that do not belong to nerdSlayer.
3: No political/religious talk or debate .
4: Any points you make have to be substantiated either in explaining your opinion or when stating facts you need to back these up with reliable sources.
5: Do not argue moderation decisions in public, if you have an issue PM the mods.
6: We don't allow self promotion, giveaways or anything of similar nature from community members on this discord without nerdSlayer's permission.
7: Wherever possible if you initiate a discussion try to do so in an appropriate channel for it. For example game news could go in game-table a story on the latest EVE heist however would belong in mmo-booth or the latest GPU shortage can go in tech-wizards

Who even likes these type of comments? ;D
Rather tone deaf to (deservedly) crap on Gamigo and then take money from Raid Shadow Legends, a game owned by a slot machine maker to get kids addicted to gambling.
So the idea is because a publisher has done poor and predatory business, I should allow my business to cease to exist lest I offend virtue signaler anons like you?@@johndaniels404
I hope people who want me to make a living or something like that@@matts4744
screw the other comments get that bag king
Every time Gamigo is mentioned even in the slightest, its always a death sentence, They have killed so many projects with potential
Agreed
Agreed 2
Anytime Gamigo is involved is a kiss of death for a game.
I think that could be a spin-off for death of a game, focusing on publishers that kill multiple games.
Get the team ready for the Death of a Game - Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League 😅
Don't forget skull and bones
I think he should do a sub series called dead on arrival at this point
Ok boss 👌🏽
For real. Something like Suicide Squad reminds me of Marvel's Avengers, and it's infuriating it takes place in the Arkham universe and the thought that this would be Kevin Conroy last performance as Batman
Not at all. MK1 is BLEEDING users and online lobbies are pretty barren. That’s more interesting than SSKJL
3:52 - End Mobile game Ad RAID Shadow Legends.
You're literally the only mmo youtuber i've seen mention neocron. thank you.
I will cover it later this year too
@@nerdSlayerstudiossWe would love to see this!
@@nerdSlayerstudioss as a former player from Pluto server that would be amazing. For as janky as the game was it was so much fun to play.
I'm impressed by the number of ways auto-captioning flubs "Eve Online".
Hahahaha
Lowkey love your lack of enthusiasm when doing the Raid ad. I hope they show up as a subject in a future Death of a Game.
Holy hell
Neocron mentioned
I've been playing it since 2019, and somehow it's only growing
I remember Black Prophecy. I Enjoyed my time with it while it was around. It was the only ship based "MMO" I had found since I played the many iterations of Space Cowboy (also known as Air Rivals and Ace Online)
Ace Online would be a great game to cover with Death of a Game. So many hours poured into that game...
Hearing the pronunciation of Zinogre in the ad-read for the Monster Hunter part sent me hahaha
Guilty
I loved it. I'm going to have to call that monster that in at least 1 monster hunt going forward. That will make their night.
I keep watching these video's about the death of games I never heard about.
Thanks
9:02 That is a fine lineup of space games indeed.
Still remember a fair few mods on Freelancer that were a great time.
I hope for the day I get to hear "Death of a Game: Raid Shadow Legends"
I played this game all the way to end game and can say, if you pushed through the grind it was super worth it. Its understandable, but very few players managed to do so before moving on to other games.
The end game PvP was really something to behold. No one moved normally, you gamed the adrenaline system and then spent it on combo moves in order to travel and turn at ridiculous speeds to out maneuver and flank targets.
From another former SWG Starsider player, all this did was make me miss SWG and the awesome cantina community we had
When will we finally get to witness death of a game: Raid Shadow legends
Would we get an ad for it in the episode too?
15:28 DD ONLINE. YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. So hyped for DD2 to drop, it also happens to be releasing on my birthday hahahah
i was not aware there was a dragon's dogma online but i recognized the clip and was so confused as to why he was making a death of the game on a single player game lol
Man. I worked on this game on my first year here in Germany. I remeber the development being really slow. Wr were sometimes getting one update each 3-4 weeks.
sounds like typical german development speeds haha
I played this game back in it's prime. Back then the meta was to ditch shields and use only the lightest weapons so you could outmaneuver opponents. Many of my kills were just circle strafing fat boys that could never hit me. So it wasn't just scope but balance that had a bumpy ride in BP.
Now I want "Death of a Game: Neocron" (though of course it's debatable whether it's actually dead). It was janky, as were all MMOs before WoW, but it was also.. incredible for its time.
I was randomly looking up info on this game tonight since I loved playing it in 2011. Thank you for making this video, it took me back to fun times years ago.
Same. I randomly remember it sometimes and decided to look it up. It's so strange that it was so shortlived. I enjoyed the space combat like in no other game. Was a leader of a faction and we built a pretty massive base. Then my friend gave the leadership rights to the wrong person and they destroyed everything and kicked us out. That's when I dropped the game. A few months (maybe weeks) later I came back and it was an absolutely different game with some class conflict going on (I was the blue and we were loosing to the red badly, mostly because there were more red players like tenfold). Then the game shut down with barely any notice. I was bummed. Didn't know of any other space game at the time other than eve online or entropia universe, but they both were, as this video said grindy spreadsheet simulators. So yeah, I kinda miss it.
2:22 OH SHIT! A RAT!
Holy crap, blast from the past. I was so hyped for this game, when it released and very quickly died outright I was crushed. Freelancer and Eve Online are still two of my favorite games even though I don't play Eve any more, but one thing Eve definitely gets right is the "Massive" part of MMO. So when a game with hardware-melting graphics was announced that promised to be a marriage of the two, I was considerably interested. I remember being concerned when it went f2p, and then outright disappointed when it released and the game was clunky and super grindy, never mind the server issues.
Well put
Neocron 2 was my first MMO and i loved the atmosphere and now i want to play it again
Ah, Black Prophecy, i was part of the closed beta test. Laggy but fun game, especially at a time when there wasn't much else out there if you wanted good space combat. I really enjoyed all of Reakktors games, miss Neocron and Toxikk
I see what that next case is and still hurts me that it never came to me in the states, considering how I loved the first game that came out on the PS3. I truly hope that the sequel that is coming in a couple of months is going to greatly improve on the first game. At least they are bringing this to the states.
And as it gets closer to that day, I feel the wind pushing me into the clouds again. "I feel the blood in my veins"
What game is that?
Huh?
Raid shadow legends must pay so well. People really do be doing full ad reads for em. I hope they offer me a sponsorship one day, it would be so funny to make 3x as much as i did with manual labor. By funny i mean soul crushingly undeserved
Played Neocron for years... so much love in that community!
Everytime you talk about how incredible Star Wars Galaxy was, I get jealous because I never got a chance to try it. I love me some Star Wars, warts and all.
It absolutely tickles me pink to see my own footage used in this video. Glad I could help out in my own way. Good ol' 720p 30 FPS Fraps capture.
Black Propehcy was a weird beast. Felt like a single player space combat game shoehorned into an MMO format. They never really did figure out what the game wanted to be. I kind hoped for a more open world PVP centric focus a la Ace Online/Space Cowboy/Air Rivals.
They also decided to use the Gamebyo engine for the project which although looked decent, pretty much guaranteed the game to run well on a grand total of 2 systems. It ran decently on my system (at the time an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 and Radeon HD 6850) but I was in the strict minority.
It's always the games you've never heard of. Marketing is such an absolute necessity that it's insane.
Never heard of this game, but it does make me think back to a sci-fi mmo I loved for it's brief time: Earth & Beyond. I'd be curious to see the detective's take on that old mmo published by EA.
i remember playing this. was in college at the time and it had some interesting features. i remember it shutting down and then turning into a strategy game then that shutting down.
First time hearing about black prophecy
Play this game as a kid for a few weeks and than it shut down. I was crushed. Still remember it from time to time. It would have been amazing to get hold of it's game files. So far I had no luck finding a working download.
I’m surprised you haven’t discussed star citizen on this channel
This was really great! Thank you always for the content NerdSlayer!! 😊
Hey Nerdslayer, Might I recommend Cinderstone Online for a future death of a game video? It was a self-proclaimed open world MMORPG that released on September 6th, 2023 on Steam, and the announcement that the servers would be shut down was posted on November 14th, 2023. 4 years of development hell only for it to flop in 2 months could certainly be interesting to talk about.
Love all these vids of yours. Fingers still crossed to see Nanovor up here one day, even tho its not an MMO
I remember this one. It was a first of it's kind for me so the clunky handling did not bother me.
Now the thing that bothered me was noticing after 3h of game play how devoid of other players it really was. Then I decided to do some digging and it was obvious that I was dancing upon a corpse. 5 months later it shut down. Shame.
Ah yes, played that game. Best way to level was placing a brick on the keyboard. The game was so buggy. Guided missles would never hit and crafted guided missles give 130 overheat bugging meaning it will never reload.
Few things I want to add that weren't mentioned in the video:
1. The game was more a MMO Freelancer than EVE online, but it never reached Freelancer quality. People just kept playing Freelancer instead.
2. The launch was desastrous. They basically just released the beta test version one day and for almost a week, it was unplayable. You couldn't even log in most of the time. Calling it "lag" is a bit of an understatement lol.
3. The game was heavily Pay2win with its crafting system. Talking about chance boosters, material insurances, mod repairs etc.
4. It had a promising story campaign for solo play, but they never fnished it, tho people really wanted more of that and got pissed.
5. If your controls felt clunky, then you distributed your skill points poorly, resulting in a too heavy loadout that wasn't good at anything. Until the big rebalancing, shields, heavy armor and heavy weapon systems (especially a mix of missiles and guns) were a no go. If you wanted to be nimble, you had to go no shields, moderate armor, fully modded but light weight low level thrusters (iirc level only increased their armor and weight, not performance lol), no missiles and a pair of 1 light weapon type. And of course, you wanted everything to be "mastercrafted" and fully modded. You also had to invest some skill points in tactics, a very misleading and often neglected skill tree that basically gave you special maneuvers, like a short speed boost (mandatory), flying backwards, or quick U-turns and tight loops. People didn't quite get that and I don't blame them. The few people who figured out good builds and grinded like maniacs (and/or paid real money) absolutely destroyed everyone else.
6. It was imbalanced as hell. The community reached out to the devs in an open letter, trying to help with the problems and save the game. I wrote the section on balancing, basically throwing in some numbers I thought might work and the devs happily inplemented almost everything I suggested 1:1. That's how desperate and understaffed they were. The game made much more sense afterwards, things like shields, missiles and beefy engines now were viable. But it was too little, too late.
7. It was super buggy and every update further broke the game in a major way. With 1 bug they fixed, 2 new bugs popped up.
8. The devs thought it would be a good idea to let active clan leaders become GMs and do all kinds of shady stuff.
9. No one EVER used matchmaking to find other players. It was either solo missions against bots or ganking people in open world sectors.
10.The "open world" was joke. You'd basically choose a sector from a list and teleport there instantly. No stargates, jump lanes, routes, maps etc. The sectors were super small as well and if you reached the boundries, you'd just come out at the opposite side. Exploiting this with the right setup, no one could ever catch you.
11. You had to pick one of two hostile races, Genides or Tyi. Most people picked Tyi, leaving Genides hopelessly outnumbered in PVP battles. If you wanted to switch, you had to create a new character from scratch. The two races couldn't even communicate with each other. Both sides had spies, everyone had smurfs, the battle was carried over to the official forums... it was a mess...
Thanks for adding more detail to the video and events
@@nerdSlayerstudioss No problem. I guess you could just sum it up as "Gamigo was publishing" as you already did. :D
I remember this one and I always wished it could have done better and been better. I loved the idea, I loved the universe it presented, but you're right - other games did everything better.
I don't understand why you don't have more views and subs, I feel like you're underappreciated as a creator.
Thanks!
i never play gamigo's name but i have seen people talked shit about gamigo and when gamigo is mentioned in this video i was like "oh, the biggest slice is there"
AHHHH! SCAMNGO!! I'll never forgive them for Archeage Unchained!!! NEVER!!!
maybe elite dangerous also deserve a death of a game these days. Funny how Elite was born and died while Star Citizen is still in development.
Saying Gamigo was involved is more of a "yeah here's the answer to the mystery" than a clue. XD
I still miss this amazing and very modern for its time game :/
Hmm, I seem to remember this just barely. I was going to wait and see how it turned out and never heard about it again so it left my memory.
I had so much fun playing this when it was in beta I think? Took me quite a few years to rediscover the genre, and 700+ hours later....yeah, elite dangerous was pretty cool 😂
You actually ARE my favourite detective, I don't care about the Black Dahlia, or the Zodiac, or what happened to Amelia Eirhart. I just care about big swings in the gaming space that crippled and fell very publicly.
Fuck yeah
Black Prophecy was my first foray into dogfighting. It was pretty good at the time, but the strategies were the same as time goes on.
Zinogree?! No such thing in MH
Zinogre, Zin + OGRE (ya know, the latter are like onions? Heh).
I hope one day you'll cover SkySaga. It was such a cute and promising game, I was waiting for the full release, then poof. It just stopped being financed, shut down and I never really knew why, except someone didn't want to spend money on it anymore. It had quite a lot of active players, yet they shut it down.
I wonder if the teaser for the next video was for Dragon's Dogma online? Funny enough Black Prophecy was how I discovered Eve Online back then due to people in the text chat comparing the two games.
@Nerdslayergaming
So which ships do you have in Star Citizen and how often do you play? 😊
Daaamn I miss that game. I was an active user at the moment of shutdown...
Watching this video it reminded me of a brazilian space mmo named Taikodom and the sequel Taikodom Living universe, it can be a cool suggestion of investigation for you. I was always curious to know what happened for it to get closed. I remember playing it a lot when I was younger
Should definitely check out Earth and beyond, it was an early space MMORPG, my first actually, I got into it in the very tail end of it's life, I remember it having some interesting stuff
A game I actually played. pog
wooo
It would be interesting if you could make a chapter for Love Live SIF 2.
Yes, it is not an MMORPG.
But the fact it will launch globally on February and is already scheduled for shutdown on May should make it an interesting study.
Even more if you add all the other Love Live games being killed as well.
I remember once I try to play this game, but then I was about 15 years old and I didn’t understand anything at all, and then it was closed, at that time the game had very beautiful graphics, although, it seems to me, even today it looks really good
This one was a bit of an open and shut case, eh? Still as a sci-fi fan that loves space dogfights, it's sad to see this game added to the casualty list
I've genuinely never heard of this game
I remember this game. Had a look, wasn't for me. As usual, sad to see it go, but the market does what it does. The lack of advertisement definitely, helped do this game in.
I can't wait to see Raid: Shadow Legends as the topic of a video instead of the sponsor!
Played Black Prophecy through the testing phases and witnessed its demise, I played with a German clan called C69.
The game was decent and a lot of fun, but they gradually changed the game into an absolute bore, gamigo forcing them to end Beta and release the game with the worst patch to hit the game didn't help the already underpopulated game. Within 2 months of the release everyone quit, we gave it one last fight in a PVP sector and basically had an Open world TDM fight.
The game had potential, it felt a lot like Freelancer, that's what drew most of us to the game back then, but the real reason for the death was the release of an unfinished unpolished game with a patch that would change half the systems and changed gameplay to a degree nobody playing asked for.
Gamigo... everytime gamigo manage a mmo You know it will die in a time
I would really have thought ⚔️⚡🔥RAID: SHADOW LEGENDS🔥⚡⚔️ would have died by now.
I miss this game so much
Oh my God. I forgot about this game. Who reminded you of it?
What I hated about it was the characters always saying 'frakking' or 'frickin'' instead of just saying 'fucking'.
Two other games would be 'Elements of War' and 'World of Battles: Morningstar'. Both were mmorts games, but only the first had a campaign. Both are dead. The latter died despite my efforts to get it taken by another studio.
I loved it when i was a kid back in the day
Oh shit! Was that Dragon's Dogma Online!?
Can you do an episode about Multiversus? It seemed such a good idea and it had support... I have no idea why it died early and it's disappointing
OH SHIT NEW BIDEO
As soon as Gamigo is involved its pretty much gg
By now Gamigo is synonymous for "killing the game" and "pay 2 win"
"Bad games don't get private servers."
Well, there are countless Metin 2 private servers.
The game has a 80%+ liked Google rating
The curse of sci fi is nothing compared to the curse of horse games lol
I remember playing this for a day or few. It came out at a time where you had very little choice in space flight games and the big Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous announcements hadn't been made yet. The gameplay itself was okay for a new game starved starfighter pilot but the grind and questionable item progression with durability or something kind of threw out my interest.
Speaking of space games of the era, there was this game called Transverse. Or rather, the idea of a game. It never got off kickstarter board. Piranha games (of Mechwarrior online) saw how well Star Citizen was selling jpegs and they wanted a slice of that so they made a generic trailer, set some hilarious stretch goals for players to fund them and... failed spectacularly. Funny case, that.
I was so hyped for this game. An mmo that's basically like freelancer? Sign me up! But it just didn't work and the launch was horrendous...
Also, were you a bit sick making this vid? Your voice sounds very off, and is sometimes super deep, lol.
No... I can change my voice it's called being a baritone lol
You liked all the old Sci Fi games? Try Egosofts X Series, X3 and X4 have everything and since seeing offline, there is no stress involved.
The things you mentioned, are reasons I avoid those games. Funny how that works...
Was that... was that dragon's dogma online? I recognize that SnS running animation
On a side tangent: it's pronounced zeen-oh-gurr not zeen-oh-gray. the word is just zin+ogre. i know i know you're going to roll your eyes for this
Yes and yes rofl thanks
Gamigo is infamous for not promoting any of their games then killing them when they don't deliver in a year max.
You can start making video about LOR (Legends of Runeterra)
Riot just announced that they laid off even more devs.
gamigo is all i needed to hear.
case closed.
That is an easy one for me since I played it back then. (German playing a german game and such)
It simply had no content for too long
Death of a game: Taikodom
Got to do the Neocrons my dude!
I love the channel but Raid shadow legends is terrible all the usual mobile rubbish
And now it actively irritates me because they're collaborating with Monster Hunter. That's not something I would want Monster Hunter to cross over with.
I played Neocron to death for a year or two after it came out, I know a bunch of guys that still play it today. The game had something special but the development team was too junior to really capitalize on that unfortunately. Game could have been massive with a big developer behind it.
I can't wait to drop off the battle bus with you, Player_134906892, and be a Legend together. Very cool!!!
They requested me change my name multiple times BTW
but it was so pretty and dark moody back then 😢
Still waiting on death of a game Brink 🥺
Would you consider the game Mankind as an mmo?
i remember this game, was fun for a while
I completely forgot about this Game, i played it too :D
Is a game really dead if we never knew it existed
woaahhh duddddeee
Such an original joke; 10/10. (Not really, of course.)
I have never heard of this game...
