The platum is a niche card. It caters 5x to flights and hotels . And only 1X on everything else. Thats it. I get more use out of the Gold card on a daily basis. Then when I want to travel just transfer the points over to the platnum. But if Amex would just add more categories to the platnum card i'd be happy paying $1,000 annual fee for it.
You're forgetting the travel perks. That's the main reason for having it. It is the premier travel card. But if you're not living that jet setting life style flying here and there every month or two? Then yeah it's not worth it.
@lurxx5120 That is how I do it. Gold card gives me enough points for $1200 in HomeDepot gift cards. Platinum I use for travel insurance and global hotline. It doesn’t pay for it self in points though.
$200 Uber Credit, $100 Saks Credit, $155 Walmart Credit, $240 digital entertainment credit. That alone is the $695 annual fee before anything travel related
, not on the American Express website. I just got my gold last month and only 60k welcome bonus. Last week I got approved for the green ( waiting for it in the mail) and it's 40k welcome bonus. I'm a authorized user on my husband's blue American express.
I think the cards are meant to work together. If they put more piont earning categories on the Platinum, then fewer people may get the Gold. I think it was done strategically. More cards mean more annual fee charges for AMEX.
I LOVE the Gold card because all the points earned on restaurants and groceries for my large family, Uber/Uber Eats credits, and it also still earns some points on flights.
I only fly about three times a year so for me I see more value in the Gold card because of the grocery and dining categories plus the eating bonuses will cover the annual fee. I'd add the Gold card with the AE Blue Cash Everyday card and a 2% card and be covered for most things I do or need.
The Walmart+ benefit with the Platinum is great because you can get $0.10 off per gallon at Exon Mobile stations. Unfortunately, Platinum just dropped priority lounges. Centurion lounges are pretty gross too-they are always packed, loud, dirty, and most of their food isn’t friendly for people with common allergies.
Something that is not mentioned in this video is that if you are a military personel and you have any active duty order, you dont have to pay the annual fee!! You just have to sumit a copy of your orders, and that's it
You nailed it! I think they are complementary cards. I got the Amex plat few months ago, and this card is great for traveling but I was not using it daily because of the 1x , so I referred my husband to apply for the gold to get the 4x on dining and restaurant 😊
The tie was the right outcome. That’s why it’s important to have both and use them as a duo. I pool the points and get a much better return that way. I wanted to add in the Green card, but alas I am in Amex Pop Up jail. Lol. Great video as always! Thank you !
I’m debating between Platinum and Venture X. If you’re able to make use of the credits on Platinum and get a net positive would you go for the Platinum over Venture x? Currently have a 125k offer also, but it’d be my only Amex card. Idk if it makes sense to be so spread out between companies. Currently have Savor and Freedom Flex, so if i go Venture X it’d pair with the Savor card but it’s only the typical 75k offer. Which card would be better factoring in my current card situation but also the sub bonus comparison?
I would go with the venture x. Love that card and was debating on getting the platinum but at almost $700 it didn’t make sense since I don’t travel to much, only twice internationally a year and maybe 2-3 domestic max a year.
@@andrewbueno3935 I'm leaning towards Venture X. I only ask because I'd be able to make use of all the Platinum credits so the fee doesn't bother me. So disregarding the fee's, would the Venture X still be the better overall card? Pro's for Venture X is the 2x on everything and being able to use Savor also. The Platinum has a great SUB bonus and also allowing you to buy directly from Airlines, where as Venture X you'd have to call for price match. My only hesitation with Platinum is I don't currently have a Gold card so I'd really only get points with Platinum if I'm getting airline tickets or hotel, where as the Venture X I'd still be accumulating because I have Savor and the 2x on Venture X. So considering that I might not rack up many points with Platinum after a bit. Maybe it's just the SUB that's enticing me 😂
@@BrickUltra if you can justify the benefits to out weight the fee I would have the platinum for sure! I just couldn’t justify it with my spending habits or I would have gotten it. I decided to get my friend referral for the gold for 90k so I decided to get that just for the bonus and food and use the venture x for travel expenses. Plus their travel portal isn’t that bad with prices, just got a round trip to Japan in April for $700 on American Airlines.
@@andrewbueno3935 Okay I'll have to think about it. Different pro's and con's with both. Probably leaning towards the Venture X just because of the 2x and that can become my catch everything card, I just don't know if I'll accumulate as many points after the first year with Platinum just because it's only stuck to Airline/hotel purchases and because I don't have Gold. But I travel a bit so maybe it'll add up. So I either fully commit to Capital One or switch and get Platinum and then Gold down the line to stay within one ecosystem. Have to put more thought into it, thanks for the help!
Maybe the best thing to do is get the Platinum and if I like it and keep getting value out of it I'll keep it, otherwise if I stop using it like in 2-3 years I can always close it and move over to Venture
I just entered the CC game and after watching yours and several other channels' think that the perfect 2 card combo is the AMEX PLT and the BILT card. With that being said.I overkilled it got the Chase Saphire Reserve as well 😁
This is how you win: One person gets the platinum and your spouse gets the gold. Best of both worlds for the sign in bonus. Afterwards, the platinum card holder should get a gold. That’s how to play the game.
Being in the military the fee gets waived and I do travel so platinum for me for now. When I retire I ain't paying $695 I'll tell u that much but for now it is much enjoyed benefits and I do use walmart+ to deliver directly to the house so easy
I have over $1200 a year in Home Depot gift cards because I buy all my groceries and restaurants on the American Express gold card. I also have the platinum card. It doesn’t pay for itself but I like the travel benefits like insurance and global assist hotline.
The grocery and dining points is definitely a miss on the platinum. In reality you need both cards because you want the airport lounge access but you also want the grocery dinning points. It's a tough choice for someone wanting just one card.
Gonna have to respectfully disagree on the statement that credit cards don’t convey status: If you’re talking cards accessible to us plebeians, I mean the general public 😅; the AMEX Gold, Platinum and (all of its iterations), Ritz Carltons, Sapphire Reserve doesn’t mean anything when I see it in public But if you whip out the invite-only cards known by all (i.e. Centurion), known be a few (e.g. J.P Morgan Reserve, Dubai Royal First), I’m pretty sure they will still cause you to double take turn whether you’re a credit card warrior who’ve seen it all, or not. 🙃
That's fair. Centurion yes. But JP Morgan Reserve there's a work around if you push hard enough, you can get it by moving over $250K to JP Morgan wealth management. Publicly they say $10M but ime you can push for $250K.
I knew it was going to be a tie the moment I saw an even number of categories XD. Still, I think it was the correct choice since they appeal to different groups. As someone who only travels maybe once a year, gold is way more attractive.
Thank you for the breakdown. I would like to hear your research on additional card members, as that is what I always struggle with especially when having 2 accounts: 1 for bus and one for personal. My husband and i travel separately sometimes. Thinking we should each have a platinum and gold /bus and plat gold/ personal. I also think you get a discount for adding gold members to an existing platinum.
the black AMEX Centurion is status. The platinum is only for show-offs at lounge entries and so on. Because you show that you spend too much on travel. Even with 200$ bonus or so on credit, everything you can spend that bonus on is too expensive compared to other things. Like you can book the same hotel on the same dates for 200$ less on other sites then Amex travel anyway, so giving just 200$ just isn't enough when Amex travel itself is overpriced.
I have the platinum card for the global assist hotline number. 1 numbers to access cash, get medivac helicopter, talk to a lawyer and translator. Then it is invaluable for people that would use that benefit.
8:32 Im sorry but 2 weeks return policy is a lot! Considering the fact that you can return it even after using it! After 3 to 7 days I know if I want to keep the item or not.
First of all Great intro I subscribed within the first 30 seconds because of the quality of your video and I can tell you take time to make this videos look as good as possible so congratulations keep it up 🎊
You stated that they're charge cards. Others have referenced them as hybrid cards... Do you know which they are? I thought charge cards wouldn't allow you to use them anymore until you paid off the balance. I figured they were hybrids because they have no preset limit, but still require a monthly payment 🤔
They automatically give you a personal loan that pays off the card if you set it up that way. So your charge card balance is paid off but you still have a balance at American Express
With the Uber credit, the FHR credit, Travel credit (AA seat upgrades qualify), entertainment credit, and Saks credit you will come out +195. Totally the winner if you don’t care about more than 1x points on purchases. This does not even consider the lounge access!
Credit cards do convey status man. I’ve seen it a bunch of ways, a bunch of times. I think what you meant to say is, us “credit card people” know that Amex is just as obtainable as Chase. But in the general public you are without a doubt conveying status. Seen it myself.
For sure, but I'd like to challenge that because in the scheme of everything having a particular card should mean next to nothing to most people. It's be great if the general public were aware to that.
I chose the Gold card, its not just the difference in fee, but I could justify the credits providing I remember to use them each month and if I do, I can deal with a $10 effective annual fee. I don't travel enough and I don't have an airport near with with a Centurion Lounge.
If I am in another country and something bad happens I want the American Express Platinum phone number to get help. This is a different number than what is on the gold card so there is rarely a hold. If you’re not the kind of person that would use this benefit it’s not worth much. But if you are and you like knowing that you have 1 numbers to access cash, get medivac helicopter, talk to a lawyer and translator. Then it is invaluable. I have the gold card. I pay $695 for the platinum mainly for this phone number.
It does convey something though... You even said so yourself. Everytime you pull it out it gets a reaction. Whether it's warranted or no is kind of irrelevant. Most people don't know much about AMEX except what their grandpa or father told them. The impression from 95% of people is that it's hard to get and only for rich people... That's why you get that reaction. So, even though it may not be warranted... It does convey something when you pull it out and use it in front of people who aren't in the know.
amex platinum states you can get a gold for no additional fee. Does that mean you can stack the uber credits for Gold and Platinum , i.r. $240 and $200 respectively
The Amex Delta gold card is an air miles card. You can only get air miles not general points for random gift cards. It also is much cheaper at $150 a year because you don’t get the other gold card benefits.
Are some bank's points just more valuable than others? Like if you could have 100k amex points vs 100k chase points, would one be better just because of their different transfer partners, etc.? Or is it completely individual?
Unlike in United States, Having Amex Platinum issued by countries from Asia is in fact convey status. You can always pays your bill on time but if you are not rich, you can’t get approved for Amex Platinum in Asia.
I was offered the upgrade from Gold to Platinum with a 100k bonus after 6k spent in 6 months. I guess for some customers the one time lifetime signup bonuses limit are waived?
There is no annual fee for authorized user for gold card if you’re a platinum card member but the authorized gold card doesn’t have the same benefits of the regular gold like 4x dining and 4x grocery, only 1x.
Can you make updated video? These have changed… I feel like the gold card is the best but, looking at the current offer, there is not much difference other then more credits for platinum
I already have the Amex bluecash which is good for everyday use so it only made sense for me to go for the platinum card for 3 trips I have coming up that’s not paid for yet lol
Just get both if you do the credits the annual fee could be reasonable, I have the rose gold and currently doing the $4000 spend to get 90,000 welcome bonus, Once I completed that I will apply for the platinum hopefully when I apply I will get the 150,000 welcome bonus and I already map out what credits I will be doing to offset the $695 annual fee so I’m not to worried about the annual fee for both cards just as long you do the credits you will be fine, I’m debating on a third Amex card to complete the trifecta I’m looking into a Amex blue everyday card or Amex green card? Anybody wants to shed some light between these two cards?
people usually do the blue business plus because the plus cash everyday doesn't earn MR points. I'm done my Gold SUB and am contemplating applying for the Platinum this fall
I have Amex gold right now, Amex is offering me an upgrade which includes 100,000 points if I spend $6,000. Should I upgrade for the 100,000 then downgrade after the 12 month period? Any help is appreciated
It use to be only charge cards but now after covid19 they added to use as credit. I have both & pay them all in every month, but you also have as credit card option. Thanks for sharing…
If you have a corporate amex card, you can take advantage of $150 annual credit for your platinum, but you must apply for the card after you have your corporate card... look for this information under amex corporate program options
I think Amex changed their policy, now you can upgrade your gold to platinum and get the sign up bonus but if you have a platinum and wanna get the gold, you won’t get the SUB
I currently have the Amex Gold, Discover It (oldest), and just got approved for the Bilt. Any recommendations for my next card? I'm eyeing the Platinum, CSR, or Venture X.
I just got an offer to to upgrade my gold to platinum and there will be giving me 75,000 points. I know you say never to upgrade but is this different?
What if you sing up for one, let’s say platinum for my business and the gold for my personal use. Can I use them both and have them available in my web interface?
so for the $120 dining credit. If I use the amex gold to buy a $10 giftcard to grubhub will amex give me that months statement credit towards that??? or can I only get the statement credit with a deliver/pickup purchase
American Express gets their panties in a wad if there's any sort of questionable purchases using credits or in gathering reward points. Don't risk it it's not worth it.
I think the info on the intro offer for the Gold is inaccurate. It's also possible to get a 90k points offer, and I believe it's for spending $4k in 6 months instead of 3.
With all do respect. You cannot just get a platinum card (like mentioned in the video: “01.05-01.10”), in Europe. The platinum and black demands some serious investment in the bank/properties/etc. - or equity.
I love your content, but it's kind of funny when you say the American Express card doesn't give you status and then you go on to talk about how much that is you get with the card lol
My understanding is the platinum card is paid off each month. But they automatically give you a personal loan that pays it off for you. That is not available to all card holders.
There's only so many cards and combinations, their bound to sound the same. Had the same thought when I first heard about the Venture/Savor card combo - then everyone had a video on it. But the different perspectives are handy and interesting.
The platum is a niche card. It caters 5x to flights and hotels . And only 1X on everything else. Thats it. I get more use out of the Gold card on a daily basis. Question to you… what can 90k points get you? Just curious…
For example:
Round trip to Europe in economy 80k.
Or one way business 50k to 70k.
@series25a
90k points is $900 in Home Depot gift cards or $450 in Apple gift cards. Those are the 2 extremes.

I think with the annual fee, it would be fair to calculate the cost of 2-3 lounge visits. There the AMEX Platinum would be wildly more net positive.
That's a good one to call out Ryan!
If you use the lounge benefit it’s definitely worth it.
I only fly about three times a year so for me I see more value in the Gold card because of the grocery and dining categories plus the eating bonuses will cover the annual fee. I'd add the Gold card with the AE Blue Cash Everyday card and a 2% card and be covered for most things I do or need.

Do you have to pay annual fees for both cards if you get them? Or just the higher price of the platinum?
You pay the AF for both.
you'll pay twice
If I have gold, can apply for platinum and close gold?
Have you done a video about American Express Delta gold card versus just the American Express gold card. What are the differences?
The Amex Delta gold card is an air miles card. You can only get air miles not general points for random gift cards.
It also is much cheaper at $150 a year because you don’t get the other gold card benefits.
What is the condition of the gold card when it`s come from a platinum card additional? The 4x in restaurants and grocery is remais or not?
nope, that's a weird Gold card. The one from an authorized user on Platinum earns the same as Platinum
That's good to note. Thanks for your feedback
@@johnsfinancetips yeah amex does income verification in many countries in asia i think so you gotta be rich or upper class
I was offered the upgrade from Gold to Platinum with a 100k bonus after 6k spent in 6 months. I guess for some customers the one time lifetime signup bonuses limit are waived?
Enjoy watching your videos very much, thanks
Send me some dollars for Christmas matr
I read somewhere on their website (via Phone) that platinum covers the Gold card annual fee. is this true or do you pay two separate fees?
There is no annual fee for authorized user for gold card if you’re a platinum card member but the authorized gold card doesn’t have the same benefits of the regular gold like 4x dining and 4x grocery, only 1x.
That's a different Gold you get when you add an authorized user on the Platinum
I value Walmart plus at $72 bc that’s the cost for paramount+ which I already pay for
Gold is better
Can you make updated video? These have changed… I feel like the gold card is the best but, looking at the current offer, there is not much difference other then more credits for platinum
Handsdown Platinum 💳
That's what I'd do for sure, all about the sign up bonuses
Can i get into the Delta sky club lounges with the amex gold?
It's not a whole lot of status till you pull out that amex black centurion lol.
Amex price matches for hotels. Best to shop around for the lower price, tell Amex the price match cost, then cha-ching MR points 💯
Yea I noticed that recently, I hope people aren't falling for it and now thinking they can hold a balance. Yikes!
If you have a corporate amex card, you can take advantage of $150 annual credit for your platinum, but you must apply for the card after you have your corporate card... look for this information under amex corporate program options
That's good to note!
@johnsfinancetips Thanks for the reply, I like your videos as they are well informative
This information must only apply to their personal cards…My business gold requires a min payment ,but I pay it off every month.
All credit cards should be paid in full each month, regardless of personal or business. Thanks for the feedback!
For whoever upgraded from gold to platinum did your credit limit increased or stayed the same. ?
mine boosted to 75k
I think Amex changed their policy, now you can upgrade your gold to platinum and get the sign up bonus but if you have a platinum and wanna get the gold, you won’t get the SUB
can you combine points for any amex whether it's personal , business or brand?
Yes. My personal and biz points were automatically combined
Yes 100%
I currently have the Amex Gold, Discover It (oldest), and just got approved for the Bilt. Any recommendations for my next card? I'm eyeing the Platinum, CSR, or Venture X.
With the Gold card I don’t have access to lounges at airports?
I just got an offer to to upgrade my gold to platinum and there will be giving me 75,000 points. I know you say never to upgrade but is this different?
What if you sing up for one, let’s say platinum for my business and the gold for my personal use. Can I use them both and have them available in my web interface?
When's the best time to check in o my flight John should I wait til a hr and a half before departure
I think an AMEX centurion card conveys status
does gold card does not give you access to lounge?
Is it possible to get both welcom bonuses to sign up separately?
That is 100% possible and the recommend approach!
Yes. My wife has one and I have the other. We swap every couple years when we become eligible for the new card bonus again
so for the $120 dining credit. If I use the amex gold to buy a $10 giftcard to grubhub will amex give me that months statement credit towards that??? or can I only get the statement credit with a deliver/pickup purchase
No, I don't think that will work
American Express gets their panties in a wad if there's any sort of questionable purchases using credits or in gathering reward points. Don't risk it it's not worth it.
I can't say for sure to do it, but also unofficially there are data points that point to that counting. Again at your own risk and YMMV
I think the info on the intro offer for the Gold is inaccurate. It's also possible to get a 90k points offer, and I believe it's for spending $4k in 6 months instead of 3.
How much is the points worth in dollars?
I have a CSR and still trying to justify if I should get a Platinum since there's currently that 120K sign up bonus 😅
Do they still have the Gold card now? Seems gone from their card list on the website
Yes, i just got pre-Approval letter in mail for Gold and platinum
With all do respect.
You cannot just get a platinum card (like mentioned in the video: “01.05-01.10”), in Europe.
The platinum and black demands some serious investment in the bank/properties/etc. - or equity.
Good to note, in the US it's a dime a dozen as long as someone wants it (Platinum). Then Centurion for sure requires some spend.
In the immortal words of that cute lil mexican girl from the old el paso taco shell commercials. "Why not both?"
Thank you so much for goodness videos
Could you just borrow someone’s card and show them or do they need to run it at the lounge?
No. The lounge checks a vlid government issued ID (driver's license/passport), along with a valid boarding pass, AND the name on the card.
No mention of amex platinum concierge???
They are the best
It’s a Both scenario!
Agreed!
I love your content, but it's kind of funny when you say the American Express card doesn't give you status and then you go on to talk about how much that is you get with the card lol
Hush
Capital one Venture X beats both of the cards !&
I don't have to pay my AMEX Platnium card in full every month... Odd
My understanding is the platinum card is paid off each month. But they automatically give you a personal loan that pays it off for you. That is not available to all card holders.
Both
Just got the 90k offer with Gold.
Not hating but this feels like a recycled video. Are you running out of ideas?
There's only so many cards and combinations, their bound to sound the same. Had the same thought when I first heard about the Venture/Savor card combo - then everyone had a video on it.
But the different perspectives are handy and interesting.
And I want it facilitated for my equifax databreach settlement, now.
Great video John. Any chance you could make a video with the correct order to get cards for each company like CapOne, Amex and Chase.
Great idea! I'll get that in the line up. In general Chase goes first and Amex goes last. Barclay I would say second. Then Capital One and Citi.
lol that was a terrible comment by me. Chase, Barclay, Cap One, Citi, Amex
Haha thanks for that!
gold also gets 3x on flights book directly on airline sites...
Get both.
