Just recently yesterday actually, my friend referred me using his regular Amex Platinum link, and I got the 150,000 sign up bonus offer and got approved, I was just so confused.... I always got the pop up jail with Schwab, and even got denied in the past?? but with my friend's referral link I got approved with the high SUB but for the regular platinum, Amex can be so weird. The. Barclays center in Brooklyn only has an exclusive entrance for platinum card holders. The AMEX suite never reopened after the pandemic. The Amex concession store is still there.
Instead of canceling the card consider downgrading to the Green. That's what I will do 100% although I doubt I will downgrade. I just got the Platinum card with a 125k sign up bonus, completely a no brainer since I will be spending about 4k-5k in a month in travel soon. Excited for the lounge access for my layover at Dallas.

I was lucky enough to get the 150K sign up bonus when I opened the card so keeping the card for the year made sense for sure! I called for a retention offer three times. The first two times they said they couldn't do anything once I called for a third time and told them I didn't want the card anymore they miraculously offered me a 50K miles retention offer. If they wanted to they would! Lol. Going into my second year with the card let's see if we keep it for a third year. That $695 is no joke!

Too many people now have the Platinum card. I have had one for 20+ years and I seem them more and more now. I would be willing to pay a higher annual fee to get better travel perks (airline, hotel, etc). The card pays for itself multiple times over if you use it correctly.

I feel your pain on pop-up jail with Amex, was looking to add the Bonvoy Brilliant and pretty frustrated I cant add that and it probably has something to do with me closing myself off my wife's Aspire card as AU within 12 months trying to get out of 5/24 Jail without thinking it might put me in Amex Jail....Lol

I wanted to use the $200 hotel perk for a night at a hotel in Germany, Unfortunately there is a 2 nights minimum for that benefit. Therefore it’s not as great as it sounds.
A few corrections, you have to book two nights to get the $200 hotel credit. Also the additional user gold card, isn’t gold at all, even though they call it that. I added my son as an additional gold card user (I have the Platinum), it arrived yesterday and it’s a generic white plastic Amex card that doesn’t even have the word “gold” on it. Just FYI… 😅
I did the same thing. I think AMEX stop calling issuing the "Gold" card for additional cards on Platinum accounts. Now the call it the Platinum Companion Card.

Question on hotel status and booking hotel stays thru AMEX travel site. I’ve made a handful of reservations at Marriott properties thru Amex travel site to get the 5x back. However Marriott will not recognize my hotel status since I booked the stay thru a “third party site”. Frustrating that they provide the status with the card but then pull this crap. When booking hotel stays, do you go direct thru their app/site for the status or do you go for the 5x MR points? Great video! I will be referencing it often
So I believe that you have to first apply for the upgrade in the hotel status through AMEX and after you are granted that status, you can then book the hotel.
Clarification to my first comment. I had signed up and confirmed Gold Elite status with Marriott prior to booking these pre-paid stays thru AMEX travel site.
For Marriott to recognize the status, you have to book directly through them. I use the Amex Travel portal to book hotels that I don't have status with (so I can enjoy all the other Plat benefits) and when I need to make a Marriott/Hilton I book direct. Even though you miss out on the 5x MR points, you get base rate hotel points + bonus points based on the Gold status, so it's not a complete loss. And you still get the possible room upgrade. Apparently, when you book through the Amex travel portal, it sometimes shows up as an Expedia booking on the hotel's side. Another reason why you might want to book through Amex is if you want to pay for your hotel stay with points and the redemption rate is better booking directly through the Travel portal rather than transferring points to the hotel itself. In the past, I have been able to ask the hotel desk at check-in to add my Marriott number to my reservation and they sometimes give me some Gold status benefits (but no hotel points yet).

Got this card 6 months ago for the 150k signup bonus and the effective annual fee for me as a college student was around $200. I also just got an internship which is going to require me to travel every few weeks and could it be happier with the card. not the reason to get the card but as a college student pulling out a platinum to cover drinks or dinner is a move. It’s not my best food card but people your taking out my age are instantly impressed. Especially when most people I know use local banks debit cards.
Using the Gold Card would be better. (4Xpts on dining) But now that you hold the Platinum card you are no longer able to get the sign up bonus on the gold card.
It doesn't need a video. Pre selected is more of a general statement and your chances are less likely where pre approved and pre qualified offer you the better chance of being approved when applying as long as nothing drastic changed in the last 30 to 60 days. Pretty simple.

They don’t , the only way points are lost is if you close the card and don’t have another in the ecosystem. A good way to keep your points alive with Amex is to open the BBP at a $0 AF
Hi John, I am glad you asked if we had any Qs. I have a Gold and a Platinum Amex, I want to purchase a sofa which is approx £1400, they don't take Amex. I feel salty about losing the points if I use my debit card. Is there any way around this? (It's not available elsewhere).
I do have a debit Visa and Mastercard but my point was the Avios points. They are Debit because it's my money, not a CC which belongs to someone else. I try to spend smart therefore I just use my Amex CCs for the Avios points and clear it monthly, hence the debit Visa/Mastercard and only spending what I can afford. That way my money grows, check out Dave Ramsay re who uses a debit card. Smart money-savvy folks who want more of their own money in the bank than they want to owe to a bank.@@universalsorrow
The Schwab statement credit is only if you have a brokerage or retirement account held in your name (or revokable trust), and have at least $250K minimum. Technically, that only leaves the retirement account (not managed by a company) with at least the minimum. Why? Who in thier right mind, would hold $250K in a brokerage account in thier name? Just walk around with a neon sign saying "sue me."
Entirely travel. My fiance and I have always had an ambition FIRE plan. In the plan, one of our biggest expenses next to housing was travel. With the points that'll help bring forward the target date for sure. But I don't disagree, taking a portion off the table into a VTI is also a good play. But that' 'll be a once I'm out of pop-up jail decision 😂

Apparently, when you book through the Amex travel portal, it sometimes shows up as an Expedia booking on the hotel's side. Another reason why you might want to book through Amex is if you want to pay for your hotel stay with points and the redemption rate is better booking directly through the Travel portal rather than transferring points to the hotel itself. In the past, I have been able to ask the hotel desk at check-in to add my Marriott number to my reservation and they sometimes give me some Gold status benefits (but no hotel points yet).

Got this card 6 months ago for the 150k signup bonus and the effective annual fee for me as a college student was around $200. I also just got an internship which is going to require me to travel every few weeks and could it be happier with the card. not the reason to get the card but as a college student pulling out a platinum to cover drinks or dinner is a move. It’s not my best food card but people your taking out my age are instantly impressed. Especially when most people I know use local banks debit cards.

It doesn't need a video. Pre selected is more of a general statement and your chances are less likely where pre approved and pre qualified offer you the better chance of being approved when applying as long as nothing drastic changed in the last 30 to 60 days. Pretty simple.

They don’t , the only way points are lost is if you close the card and don’t have another in the ecosystem. A good way to keep your points alive with Amex is to open the BBP at a $0 AF

I do have a debit Visa and Mastercard but my point was the Avios points. They are Debit because it's my money, not a CC which belongs to someone else. I try to spend smart therefore I just use my Amex CCs for the Avios points and clear it monthly, hence the debit Visa/Mastercard and only spending what I can afford. That way my money grows, check out Dave Ramsay re who uses a debit card. Smart money-savvy folks who want more of their own money in the bank than they want to owe to a bank.@@universalsorrow
The Schwab statement credit is only if you have a brokerage or retirement account held in your name (or revokable trust), and have at least $250K minimum. Technically, that only leaves the retirement account (not managed by a company) with at least the minimum. Why? Who in thier right mind, would hold $250K in a brokerage account in thier name? Just walk around with a neon sign saying "sue me."

Entirely travel. My fiance and I have always had an ambition FIRE plan. In the plan, one of our biggest expenses next to housing was travel. With the points that'll help bring forward the target date for sure. But I don't disagree, taking a portion off the table into a VTI is also a good play. But that' 'll be a once I'm out of pop-up jail decision 😂
