My mother who lived with me for years with COPD passed away less than a year ago & left me with her full bedroom & 5 storage units. I cleared them out & donated everything that I couldn’t fit in her bedroom. I indicated that I would be left to clear out the units. I indicate that I will one day have to clear her belongings in her bedroom bc I have a sister with a baby who is in a unstable relationship & 2 older in-laws that I could indicate one needing to move in after the other passes. Moving is not an option for me, I have so many memories here with my mom who I was with when she passed in my living room. I was doing good with decluttering her units. I did it less than a week, but I find it very difficult to declutter her bedroom. I feel like I have gave up so much in a short time.

I'm sitting in a room surrounded by boxes just waiting for me to make a decision. Watching your conversation has helped this recent widow to take the first step. Thank you.

Angela, a lot of your square footage in your currents house is most likely hall space. You might have rooms the same size in your new place so don’t stress that you need yo get rid of half. Happy packing!!!📦🏠🚚I’m sorry for the loss of your father in law. So kind of you to help your aging family. 🥰

Listening has made me so thankful that my mother no longer lives with me. She moved in with me because she couldn't afford to live alone and our beliefs re possessions were polar opposites. I feel for anyone going through that now.

This is literally perfect timing! We are moving ASAP for my husband’s work. Downsizing from a house to a small city apt. I was cleaning out drawers, organizing and cleaning RIGHT as you were talking about it! Made me feel like I was going in the right direction.
What works for me: I bought a “time timer” alarm clock and I set it on a specific time, usually 10-15 min chunks. I set a goal: I’m going to go around with a box and collect the random medical stuff (nurse). Or plastic bags/wrap for recycling. That way I can see everything I have first, go through and get rid of anything broken, old, missing parts and organize the things I keep. Then I know what I have and I don’t have to look or buy new because I can’t find it. This move will be a challenge but I’m excited for the journey!
    Thanks for the tips!

This is wonderful on several levels... obviously, the valuable information from both of you. More importantly, in my mind, is that Angela, who is insanely capable in so many areas, is asking for help and collaborating. Get well soon and continue to share your moving and downsizing adventures!

Thank you so much for this video!! My Mom is about to go on hospice and has a house full, as well as an art studio. This has given me so much help on how to have the hard conversations with her, but due to all this going on I have been paralyzed in my own home. Got the checklist! God Bless and sorry for the loss of your FIL.

My heart goes out to you! My mother who lived wt me had many storage units & I had to clear them after I watched her pass in my living room on hospice. I’m having a hard time getting rid of things in her bedroom. My mom was very upset anytime I would try to help her with her stuff. I was in a hurry to do it before she passed & she wouldn’t allow me to help. I now feel guilty for touching her things. Go slow & do it with love.

I am 67 and my husband is 73, and all of our parents have passed away, so we have accumulated many of their material items. I don't mind keeping things that bring us comfort or things that we use. But his mother was very mean to me, so it's very hard for me to keep certain things that were hers. I mentioned to him giving his mother's china to his sister, who also has part of it, but I think he wants to keep what we have. How do I get over these emotional triggers regarding things that belonged to his mother? Thank you for any suggestions.

This is a very sensitive topic. It might help to have an open and honest conversation with your husband about your feelings. I'm sure that together, you will find a solution that honors your memories without causing emotional distress
