I used to be the MESSIEST person in the house or among my friends. It was terrible. I was ashamed daily by how my room or elsewhere looked. I never wanted anyone to see it. It really turned into something that emotionally affected me and it was among my top 3 of things I hated about myself.
Then one day I decided not to be messy anymore (this is the FAST story) and Im now the neatest person in the house and I´ve taught my family how to be organized and inspired them. Part of the reason I was messy was that nobody taught me or told me how to be organized and clean. Now I literally leave my room open because it has sort of been an inspiration for my family and I´m really proud of myself. It may sound super silly but it DID affect me terribly before. Btw.. I´m 22 and all this happened around a year and a half ago. So people can change : ) And try not make others feel bad for being messy, some of us where already ashamed of it and it only makes it worse.

Time I get home from work I am exhausted. So what I do is pick one room to do a day and if I feel like I keep going. When I see that one room is clean it gets me motivated. Hope this helps someone out in cleaning land. Thank you Melissa and Chad for another great video.

My husband is so messy. He comes from work and starts undressing right in the living room and leaves his clothes on the floor. He uses like 3-4 cups/glasses in one day rather then just rinsing out his cup between uses.

truth be told, my entire family is messy. I subscribed to this channel to LEARN how to clean, because I was never taught how to do it as a kid (save for reading directions on the back of bottles of cleaner and putting in massive amounts of elbow grease when something becomes unbearable.) I've definitely picked up a lot of good tips from this channel, even if i still struggle to implement them (i'll confess that's laziness on my part).

My mom is a hoarder so I grew up in a mess. Like stuff everywhere with paths to walk through each room. But she did keep the toilet, sink and tub clean. And laundry was always done. so I have to give her that. I ended up opposite of her and I am very anti stuff, but my son has the hoarder gene. So I ask him to at least keep those nasty areas clean. And I put up a room divider curtain so I don’t have to see it when I go downstairs to do laundry. Once in a while I just take the weekend to get his space clean and get rid of stuff, and he is ok with it. Great advice !!! I used to fight with him all the time and it stressed me out more than him, so I had to tone it down and compromise.

Leave. I refuse to live with messy/filthy people. I don't live with messy family/friends and my spouse had to pass my "neat test" in order for me to feel safe about tying that knot. I get murderous living with messy people. Just cut down on the would-be misery and just do not get involved in the first place if you treasure your neatness, organization, freshness and sanity.

my parents are both messy from age. my mom used to keep the house clean and my dad the yard. now my dad has to do most everything. I'm also messy but working on it, I got used to someone picking up after me when I was little. now that I live by myself I'm finding that things tend to stay where you leave them.

My husband and I live with my Mum, who's the worst offender when it comes to mess. I've been trying to get her to tidy her room since I was in my teens (ironic right?) She has pretty bad asthma, and 20years of dust in her room FYI, and that's aside from all the piles of paperwork and swamped surfaces in communal areas.
Now I'm - yet another one by the previous comments - 4months pregnant and desperate to get the house in a state fit for baby, before I get too big... So thank you for these suggestions; I know I've been too mean/nagged her before and nothing's happened, so I'll gladly try it your way and hope! x

I'm messy ( I'm a pack rat), but it doesn't help that my husband is lazy! On the weekends I always focus on one room that needs a big deep clean and I do that room then through out the week i try to maintain it. Sometimes it's a success and sometimes it's an epic fail. it's easier when my hubby is away at work because then I have no distractions and I can get things done. To help myself out I have been investing in organizers and containers that way if something gets messy then it's only messy in the container and it's not every where.

Both of us are guilty as charged (hubby, self). However, we definitely have been doing everything in your video, such as designating zones, compromise, encouraging each other, etc. Rather than saying, "We have so much more to get done," we flip it and say, "Wow, look how much has been accomplished. Great job, let's keep it up." And, rewards always work.

While you're cleaning, ask them for "help". My husband won't pick up on his own, but he will do it with me if he sees it as "helping". Feeds his ego because he thinks he's being a good guy by helping". Doesn't really occur to him that he is responsible for the mess and I'm taking care of him by cleaning it up, but I'll put my ego aside so the work can get done.

Oh gosh, I live in a household full of messy people! My hubby, my 16yo, my 7yo and my sis in law. They hate being nagged at so every time I clean something I make a deduction from what they get from me and I have my in law buy extra stuff. Hi! Ive been called over-organized and a neat freak all my life, but I share a room with a 17 year old sister who doesn’t understand the benefits of a clean space. The disorganization of our room has recently become too much for me to handle as I’ll be starting highschool this year. She always says that I need to deal with it since she’ll be leaving for college in a year. If I were to have a conversation about it, it’d probably turn into an argument. I don’t know what to do anymore because this mess causes so much stress! I’ll definitely take this video in to consideration and try to talk with her and change the way I deal with cleaning and organizing so maybe she will too. If anyone has any extra tips on how to deal with my situation please feel free to reply! Thank you for the video and to anyone who offers help!

Easy to say than done. Messy people are normally lazy, and when they are lazy, they would not care. My husband is one of them. Sometimes I just ignore his messiness, others I can't. I used soft voice, harsh voice....Every single time after we have a fight about him leaving things everywhere, he would try to keep our place in decent shape for a couple weeks then he would get comfortable and get back to being messy. Sometimes, I ask myself if I should get a divorce because dealing with his messiness makes me a mean and angry person and I don't want to be that kind of person.

My two roommates have trouble cleaning because they both have some sort of physical issue. They are both overweight and dealing with foot, ankle, and knee issues so they tire out easily and have trouble getting things done. I am kind of a neat freak i guess because I can't stand sinks full of dishes, counters covered in gunk, shoes and socks thrown about everywhere, and laundry that has been sitting in the washer for how long. One time i cleaned the fridge because it smelled funny and found mouldy food stuffed in a corner behind a large carton of eggs. Im at wits end... What should I do?

So he throws his uniforms, socks and undies on the floor in the living room. so I gave him a laundry bag to place in his closet, which is an epic Fail. Now, he places everything on the floor of his closet (which he can't close now). I even, went out and purchased bins to place his shoes and socks in, of course the bin is empty and shoes are all over the floor. I hope someone have ideas that can help. Love the video.

Ok, I have a huge dilemma... I suffer from anxiety and depression and mild OCD.
So, the depression makes it very hard to be motivated to clean or do much at all for that matter
And living in any form of mess triggers my OCD, which in turn spikes my anxiety... which then makes it EVEN HARDER to clean.
Some days I will get into a great frame of mind and spend the entire day cleaning, but because I live in such a small room, it gets very messy, very quickly, so as soon as I am out of that good frame of mind, it's hard to clean again.
So I'm stuck in this awful endless cycle, and I don't know how to break it!!! Please help!

Thanks for the Video. However I don't agree on the statement that a messy person is not wrong. actually they are wrong, because mess lead to unhealthy living circumstances. if it wasn't for the clean person who keeps cleaning after them, bacteria, mold and insect will be found and lead to health issues, especially in the bathroom. so if they are jeopardizing your health they are wrong. I'm living this situation with my roommate, I don't even ask her to clean, but I have asked her to keep it clean several times. and yet nothing change. it's like I'm being taking advantage of. she's the queen who comes to every thing clean, take a shower, wear her make up, messing the bathroom again and leave, and I'm the maid who keeps cleaning after her LMAO. and this is just because I happened to be the clean person!

I was kind of hoping you would just say throw their shit out! bang walls. Make a bigger mess so they have to live in it. LOL not really but the rage inside was. My partners cousin cleaned bodily fluids in our dishwashing sink and didn't think it was necessary to bleach. That is just the TIP of the iceberg, there is a lot more filth I've put up with. I'm 6mo pregnant and have nearly quite seriously snapped.

The problem is not that 'the messy people' don't clean...I'm perfectly happy to clean EVERYTHING by myself ALL the time, the problem is, they make everything dirty in literally zero time-I unfortunately don't have the time to be cleaning every second of my life, so my request is really simple, i.e. to NOT be making everything dirty all the time, and to me it seems reasonable...especially since I'm willing to do everything else by myself and I don't require any help...but it seems worthless, sigh.

The people I live with don't help with cleaning anymore - not even a little bit. They don't even clean up the litter boxes. I've reached my limit, so I stopped cleaning altogether because these are 25-year-old LADIES who would not stick to chores. They knew I would get manic late at night over it and clean everything and I'm tired of being taken advantage of. It's horrific and depressing...

Same I'm 12 and I share a room with my sister and my cousin. They don't clean up. I have to clean up everything and when I leave the room and come back after awhile the room already has things underneath the bed/on the floor(ect.) They hate to clean up and leave dirty clothes on the floor and dirty dishes stashed around the room. And trash on the dresser. One time I left the room as it was to see if they was gonna realize their mess and clean up. But the room stayed the same way for 4 days! So had to clean the whole room. Even when company come they leave the house and their room messy. My mom is the only person who helps clean the house with me and I'm the only one who cleans up the room😡 I can't wait to have my own house!
Also they dont have manners and they sneeze and cough without covering their mouth. They sneeze on the floor on the couch on the blankets and even on people and they cough in your face!

Here's one that few people will ever tell you. Sometimes the best solution is to just walk away and move on with your life. Seriously find another living arrangement, if a person is just plainly a irresponsible person you are not going to change them and they certainly won't meet you in the middle. Responsibility is something that is learned on there terms not yours.

Instead of showing me how to clean, she would slam things around and hint at needing help instead of just asking so I would always mentally check out. I lived on my own for about 10 years and never enjoyed cleaning until now..I live in a space where I am actually proud of so I would like it to be neat most of the time and can have guests over without embarrassment. Great video! I guess I would be considered in my husbands eyes as the messy person! My husband is a clean freak and it drives me crazy.... but on the flip side I drive him just as crazy as well. I don't see the need to have EVERY THING in place at all times where as he does. It has been a struggle to compromise with him. We have agreed that my side of the bed is off limits to him as well as my office. I work from home so he feels I have time to clean all the time which is not the case. I don't get paid to clean house during my work hours. In any case I do think your video was pretty helpful and I plan on having him view it as well. Dealing with apathetic, inert or disorganized people is beyond frustrating when often the work load is shifted onto your plate. I cannot, for mental health reasons, live in constant mess or chaos, but also cannot live feeling overwhelmed with a disproportionate amount of the work load. My simple requests of maintaining a cleaned or decorated space, or simply respecting my belonging such as not using my decorative pillows especially when you come home dirty from work is really hard. It isn’t simply a matter of me being _too neat_ but expecting mutual respect for my space and time. Eventually I start to breakdown myself and stop feeling motivated to maintain a healthy living space which is ultimately indicative of my own mental state.
And, I am not at all super particular, and I don’t mind things looking lived-in but frick man. I don’t want to find garbage in the fucking family room or look at your stained blankets or piles of “clean” laundry.
