  • In this video Corin works on a Japanese Maple, that had been left to extend for many years. By trimming it back in Early Spring to gain better and more compact structure. Once the tree has been pruned he then repots the tree to complete the image.

    Another enjoyable video; entertaining and educational. It has been useful seeing how you cut back the long internode and bringing back the shape of the tree. Also helpful regarding the positioning of the triple trunk in the pot.

    I wasn't a fan till you said towards the end about the 3 trunks not being straight, not flat, but more in a 3 dimensional fashion. SOOO glad you made that point! To many people place their multi-trunk bonsai in a flat plane and it dulls the composition.

    Interesting and instructive and I guess, you earn more abonnees. Given time, that number will rise: I have no doubts about that. However, not many of us, bonsaï enthusiasts, do have this kind of (very) valuable trees (or many relatively large Japanese maples to make a forest and so on) and I noticed that quite a lot of people watched your last video about "How to style a Juniper bonsaï"... Just my thoughts... Good luck and keep up the good work!

      Thankyou, we are trying to do videos to cater to all. But primarily I'm showing the work I do at my studio. This does involve working on many specimen trees.

    Excellent work Corin, and great video! One quick question: you use straight akadama instead of a blend of akadama, pumice and/or lava rock...have you found this a better option? Adding volcanic soils adds aeration to the mix. Thank you!

    Hi Corin, I like your channel more and more because of the valuable content. Great work! A question: you always tie in the tree after adding soil. This is different from what most other people seem to do. What is the reason that you do it this way? I'm just curious, thanks.

      adding soil first makes the tree more stable and allows final adjustment before conclusion of wiring it in to the pot.

    Very interesting but regarding the large branch at the top of the main trunk and leaning over to shade the other trunks, why was this not reduced as well?

    Corin, when you give the tree a major root prune like that do you need to increase the feeding regime.

    I was wondering why you don’t dunk the base and surface roots into water to clean away all of the dirt instead of digging away at it? Would love to get your insight. Great videos

      because this way is quicker, easier and less messy in the studio

      of course, I use neat akadama on all my acers because it works best

    I can’t help to notice, you don’t sieve the akadama? Isn’t it that so important after all, or perhaps you just don’t use the powder part on the bottom of the bag?

      I'd have to work night shift with the amount we use, if I had to sieve it all. First watering most dust washes through. Also we use decent quality akadama, so not as much dust.

    Hi Corin. How has the tree behaved after the root pruning? Ive read that older Maples can be pruned days after buds have broken and leaves are visible, unlike young maples at budbreak.

      It has been unstoppable, still here at the nursery and doing very well.

    Great video Corin! I have a dilemma... I hope you can help me :) I have a large Japanese Maple +40 years old and I need to cut a big portion of the trunk (It splits in two and I need to remove one side) When is the best time to do a large truck cut on Japanese maples? Some says summer (June?) to help closing the wound fast some say just after leaves dropped... and I am a bit confused on when s a best time for such a big cut. I hope you can help me clear my doubts :) thanks a lot

    Dear Sir, I noticed you are using Lac Balsam (a tube is on the table). Is this suitable to seal cuts? And is it an adequate substitute to the "Japanese Bonsai-Cut-Paste"? I'm using the Lac B. too but I think the callus is developing not so well/fast after applying it… Do you recommend the Lac Balsam or the Japanese stuff? Cheers, Chris.

    I was taught never to prune an acer palmatum in spring as it tends to bleed a lot and that weakens it a lot. Any thaughts ?

      Its fine, standard horticultural practice. Also all cuts over 5mm were sealed with Lac Balsam. But the world is full of different teachings in different climates

      we can, but more usually customers visit our nursery, so they can see the tree in person and we can give them any advice they might need for care.
