- Hello! My goal is for more people to take up bonsai as a hobby. If you're a beginner, I recommend you use Chinese Elm for your first bonsai because it is the easiest material to work with. In this video, I'll elaborate more on that, show you a quick tour of my elms, and work on three elm trees with you. Let's go!

Literally my thoughts exactly for why I bonsai with this weed tree! It was literally the start of an obsession. I know I've had a problem with these things growing up sides of my house and keep chopping them and they never die, then one day I decided to put it in the pot.
I saw that scratching technique to promote a graft in citrus trees. I would never think of it to use it in bonsai.

If you cut the roots to fit in a thin pot, you should do it in the winter. Before, I thought it would be spring when the plant is growing strongly.
Great stuff I totally agree. I have an elm in the ground and seeds grow like crazy. I’ve had a seed grow out of the bottom side hole in a plastic pot. Thanks from Ojai California

Thanks for all the great information on styling elms. I am most curious about you doing root work and potting during winter. I have was with the understanding that repotting was a spring time event.

Soon is time for repotting
In Santa Fe there's a Siberian elm that grows like a weed. I've been considering harvesting seedlings from my backyard there to use as bonsai material since there are so many seedlings every spring. In Texas I've been experimenting with mesquite trees. I'm only a year into this hobby so we'll see where it goes.

Junipers,olives and elm trees are my top 3 for begginers. they are flexible, very hardy and the most important they are beautiful.

Love your videos can you explain how old the tree has to be to start planning the roots in the right position many bonsai infestation tend to be when the tree is very young like 1 year old like to know your approach

Of the three Elms... The largest one you showed the back side of the trunk being dead at the roots... My question is did you create that dead side/feature intentionally or did it just "happen"?

Great video! I have a Chinese elm tree that is not producing much. The apex has lost part of the foliage and it’s only growing 2 little branches at the bottom of the tree. On have 4 other Chinese elm and the other 4 are doing fine and growing very vigorously. Any advice?

Does anyone know why new buds, when they start to leaf, the leaves have red dots all over then and dont end up growing past a leaf or 2? Its a chinese elm for ref
I've been wondering if I want to thicken my elm trunk considerably, instead of planting it in the ground will I get the same result if I use a very large pot. The reason I don't want to plant in the ground is slugs I cant get rid of, whatever I do, and the soil is very clay like and too soggy especially during winter.
Yes! Growing in a big pot is a good alternative. You may want the roots to grow into the ground, even with a bottomless pot, to have your cake and eat it too without having to dig it out of heavy clay soil.

How long did it take you to prepare the bonsai material?
For trees I dug from my garden, no preparation aside from putting in a growing pot. I am starting to grow saplings and use them for video…and that will take a year or two. So the short answer is depends.
I presume that is Chinese elm? Are other varieties of elm trees as suitable for bonsai?
Sure, Japanese, Siberian….Even the stately American elm wiped out buy the Dutch elm disease is coming back…with new strains that are resistant to that problem
