  • How to Tell if Amber Gemstones are Real or Fake (When the Salt Water Amber Test Won't Work!) Poke and Sniff! One of my goldsmithing colleagues, Alex Gouveia, found a lovely amber necklace at a flea market, suspected it was a find and wanted to know for sure if the amber was real or fake. Their are multiple ways to test amber but my favorite method is a version of scratch and sniff! We will demonstrate how we test to see if amber is real or fake so you can know for sure. There is also a salt water test to test to tell if amber is real or fake (genuine amber gemstones float in salt water!) but we did not want to remove the amber gemstone from its setting, since the entire amber piece is lovely the way it is. The metal setting would pull the amber down to bottom in salt water whether the amber was real or fake, so when testing amber jewelry to see if the amber is real or fake, the poke and sniff test is a necessity! If you don't have a torch like we do, a match, lighter, or gas stove works just as well to heat up your pin or needle and tell if your amber gemstone is real or fake.

    I bought an amber ring from a pawn shop. I did this test and I'm happy to report that what I have is genuine amber.

    My understanding is that this technique cannot distinguish amber from copal, the latter is also of natural resin origin but only thousands of years old, not millions and fossilized like amber. Apparently copal also smells like pine, but is not as strong, but would not smell like burned plastic.

      This method is meant to tell the difference between genuine amber and fakes. 😃

    All you have to do is rub the item in question on your clothing fast for about 40 seconds, and take a couple of little pieces of paper and put them on a table. If the paper sticks to the amber, it is real. Easy, quick, and you won't maybe damage something with a test like heat or whatever else.

    The crazing and inclusions are good signs. They rarely add those in resin type fakes, which is nuts because ofc they’re often characteristic of the real thing. Love amber, and that piece is a stunner….it’s not an easy material to find these days.

    Cool trick. I have some thrift store beads that I am pretty sure are Czech glass because of the quality and shape. I tried to see if they were cold or not to tell if glass or plastic. I will try to melt one. Can you please show and tell the long gold chain you made, if you ever get a chance?🙂

    I bought two necklaces and a ring in a secondhand store recently, where they were sold as amber. Now i'm sad because the smell is def not pleasent when I tried poking with a hot needle☹ I do have a really tiny peace of amber that I bought years ago at a shop who specialize in crystalst, and would love to test it but now i can't find it.
    Anyway, thank you for this video🙏💖

      If it smells plasticy, I am afraid it isn't amber. Once you find your real piece, give it the same test so you can smell the difference.

    Best thing to do put it in saltwater if it floats it's Amber also using a UV light if it glows it's Amber and also use in a hot needle

    • @JewelryArts

      I showed this technique because amber in a heavy metal setting won't float.

    • @beyazlamor5591
      @beyazlamor5591 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you put enough salt, fake amber also floats. Just rise the amount of salt and you'll see. Salty water test is not an accurate or scientific method.

    • @princesskittie119
      @princesskittie119 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      wouldn't plastic also float?

    • @beyazlamor5591
      @beyazlamor5591 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@princesskittie119 Dude... it depends on the "density" of the material. Anything would float, if the density of the material is is lower than the salty water solution's density. The density of water is approximately 1 gram per cubic centimeter (g/cm³) at standard temperature and pressure (STP), which is defined as 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) and a pressure of 1 atmosphere (101.325 kilopascals or 14.7 pounds per square inch). However, the density of water can vary slightly depending on factors such as temperature, pressure, and impurities in the water. (Such as amount/ratio of the "salt" in the water). The density of salty water, (such as seawater), is slightly higher than that of normal water, due to the presence of dissolved salt and other minerals. The density of salty water can vary depending on the amount and type (and amount) of salt and other dissolved materials present, as well as temperature and pressure. So, if a material is floating in salty water, this means that the density (specific weight) of the material is lower than the salty water. Amber is a lightweight organic material. And its density is typically lower than that of seawater or salty water, which is why it can float in salty water. (Just like any material which has a density lower than salty water). When amber is placed in salty water, the buoyant force acting on the amber is equal to the weight of the displaced water, according to Archimedes' principle. Since the density of the amber is lower than the density of the salty water, the buoyant force is greater than the weight of the amber. So that is causing it to float on the surface of the water. But it doesn't proove that the amber is real. Any amber-like material which has a lower density would float in the salty water, accourding to the amount of the saturated salt in that water. The salt content of the water does not have a significant effect on the buoyancy of the amber, as long as the density of the water remains higher than the density of the amber. Got it?
