I'm 65-years-old and, still to this day, Jackson Browne is THE greatest songwriter of all time... bar none. You kids of today, take a listen, and experience what we experienced when we were your age. Jackson gave us our collective voice both personally and politically. He gave us hope by helping us truly understand what was going on around us-- again, both personally and politically. If you have an affection for genius, then listen to this man's words for he sings our collective soul.

This is Jackson’s prettiest, saddest, and best song, which is saying a lot. It’s obviously written from a place of devastation and regret, with a little obsession thrown in. It’s truly a heart rending masterpiece.

This album came out when I was retired on disability from the Air Force with almost 15 years of service during the Gulf War after being injured in an airplane (C141) fire. When I was in the hospital my wife left me never coming one day to the hospital or giving me a reason why and went to Hollywood to become an actress. She had an affair as well. I was retired after 14 months of recovery on the East Coast and drove to the West Coast, not to find her but to find myself. I tell you this not for tears but because I am over her after many years and the two songs that helped was I'm Alive and Sky Blue and Black. Ever word in this song fits my situation to this day. As Mr. Browne says this song is "...about part forgiveness...". Although, the pain in my body never really goes away because of the injuries, it is still about forgiveness and that helps the heart feel less pain. Sometime other people have to say the words we feel. Mr. Browne, thank you for helping me recover. I wore this CD out. After 22 years of keeping this in I thank you for letting me relate to you how powerful and helpful this song and I'm Alive was and still is.
    JB's explanation of the song.
    th-cam.com/video/ZYGkC0NrS5E/w-d-xo.html
To Cindy (Cynthia) A.," Where you gave me the world I was in and a place I could make a stand I could never see how you doubted me when I'd let go of your hand." "And I'd have fought the world for you if I thought that you wanted me to or put aside what was true or untrue If I'd known that's what you needed, what you needed me to do", "But the moment has passed by me now do I put away my pride and just come through for you somehow."
"You're the hidden cost and the thing that's lost In everything I do." "That's the way love is"
"... I thought that it would kill me
    But I'm alive, "

MrJets63 I want to thank you first for your military service and am sorry you suffered both physical and emotional pain. It isnt easy being transparent to others, but there are some who appreciate and relate to your story. I didn't meet my wife I'm married to now till I was 60. We now have 6 years together, and I know that what I thought was love before was instead just the need for love and wasnt meant to be. Jackson Browne is probably my favorite lyricist of all singers and bands. This song is hauntingly beautiful

    • @kimwestwood8840
      @kimwestwood8840 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@Cody Levinson Thats a tough break and hard I am sure. I cant imagine how hard that was. I too have my story filled with pain, loss. But 27 years ago I found something that never lets me down, and is faithful and never ending. Jesus the Messiah. No matter what life brings, He is my teacher, provider, healer, refuge, and Father. Cody I pray you find Him. Not religion or a church . My brother was an alcoholic most of his life. He was molested when 10 years old. After many years of self abuse and slow suicide, he now has peace, sobriety, and new life. Man, HE IS life. God bless you Cody, praying for you my friend. I am a retired professional musician, and for fun I am recording my versions of cover songs right now. I am uploading them to my sound cloud page. Friend of mine has asked me to do a Jackson Browne song, so thinking of doing this one. U take care of yourself.

    • @kimwestwood8840
      @kimwestwood8840 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@Cody Levinson I know your old enough to see the moral decline of the world. I dont recognize it anymore. I am 66 years old, live in the Philippines with Joy , my wife of almost 4 years, and her 3 kids. I have been a witness for the Lord many years, by experience I can attest to His amazing love, far above any person. No spouse, no possessions can fill the void in our hearts. Thats the place He created in each of us that only He can fill . He is hope, when there is none. He is our best friend, when theres no one around. And Jesus assures us that those who believe in Him, though they die, will be forever with Him .. He alone can somehow make the most unbearable circumstances bearable, and help us to "see" more clearly .. You arent alone Cody. Your heavenly Father cares about you. He wants you to know Him. He is waiting for you to call to Him, seek Him. When a man is desperate enough, and everything has failed, Jesus is here. When you place your trust in Him, you will be amazed and want to kick yourself for not doing it sooner. I know by experience. He has brought me through a lot. I just wanted to share that with you .. With Him, your past pain and suffering will become just a memory. Your future, never brighter.

In the calling out to one another
Of the lovers up and down the strand
In the sound of the waves and the cries
Of the seagulls circling the sand
In the fragments of the songs
Carried down the wind from some radio
In the murmuring of the city in the distance
    Ominous and low
I hear the sound of the world where we played
And the far too simple beauty of the promises we made
    If you ever need holding
Call my name, and I'll be there
    If you ever need holding
And no holding back, I'll see you through
    Sky blue and black
Where the touch of the lover ends
And the soul of the friend begins
There's a need to be separate and a need to be one
    And a struggle neither wins
But you gave me the world I was in
And a place I could make a stand
I could never see how you doubted me
When I'd let go of your hand
Yeah, and I was much younger then
And I must have thought that I would know
If things were going to end
    And the heavens were rolling
Like a wheel on a track
    And our sky was unfolding
    And it'll never fold back
    Sky blue and black
And I'd have fought the world for you
(I'd have fought the world for you)
If I thought that you wanted me to
Or put aside what was true or untrue (true or untrue)
If I'd know that's what you needed
What you needed me to do
But the moment has passed by me now
To have put away my pride
And just come through for you somehow
    If you ever need holding
Call my name, I'll be there
    If you ever need holding
And no holding back, I'll see you through
You're the color of the sky
Reflected in each store-front window pane
You're the whispering and the sighing of my tires in the rain
You're the hidden cost and the thing that's lost
    In everything I do
Yeah and I'll never stop looking for you
In the sunlight and the shadows
And the faces on the avenue
    That's the way love is
    That's the way love is
    That's the way love is
    Sky, sky blue and black
    أحبك صنعاء شعاع القمر

It's never easy to say good-bye to people you care about, but when you have to do it a lot, you have the strength to do it, when you need to have it the most. This Song says THAT, very well. Your soul holds your memories of your commraderies.💧✨💜

My parents introduced me to Jackson Browne's music when I was in high school. Though this is really a breakup song, it's one of my favorites. On a par with U2's "One."
His lyrics are incredible, and I never tire of them. "And our sky was unfolding/And it'll never fold back." What's done is done, and your life will never be quite the same because that person was in it.

I love the comments on this song, you guys are like word by word describing exactly how I feel about this song, honestly I love all of Jackson Browne's music but this song is special to me, quite simply my favorite! And i agree with the Neil Young comment that someone added here, James Taylor, Neil Young, Carole King, Jackson Browne, John Denver the list goes on and on, all such beautiful story tellers that luckily we have the pleasure of having in our lifetime. Sadly most of the music these days with the exception of a few timeless artists out there will never even come close to matching the beauty of JB's beautiful, simplistic and effortless song writing style not to mention that voice of his! And I love that there are people out there that can still appreciate this.

I had the c.d. in my '96 dodge intrepid...crossing Memphis to Arkansas... at dusk. ... sky blue and black ... praying for a happier life from an abusive husband ... yes.. is a happier ending ... but a lot of work is necessary 4 authenticity.

Jackson Brown, here you come again, with a tremendous & powerful song. You have been a part of my life since the 1st time I heard you, many years ago and attended one of your concerts. Thinking back, I must have been 13-14 years old; I will be 55 in October. When my father died in September of 76',(his death was such a tragic one, as he was a locomotive engineer & the other engineer, was new to his job and failed in taking the correct orders given, therefore, a head-on train collision happened) your music helped me so much. I listened to you daily. It seemed like so many of your songs, we're written especially for me. Sounds silly, I know; but I could understand your message. Thanks for sharing your wonderful talent with the world. Your music reaches so many people, please continue writing, and singing. God bless you. I will always be one of your biggest fan.🙌👍🎶🎸🎹🎼🎵🎤😊👱

+Jeil bchcats (bchcatgirl) Reverse, here, although I was in high school, Jackson being the age of my older brother. I liked Jackson okay, but it wasn't until of late, losing my children, that this song (without really absorbing the words!) did this connect to the pain of my loss, playing it over and over and over while it hugged me through the tears when no one else was there. There's a plug for timelessness of good music and vulnerable authorship.
