It's amazing to me how I learn things from your video that seem like they should have been in the tutorial of the game. I installed Othercide some months ago and never finished because I wasn't fully understanding what the game wanted me to do, this makes me want to jump back in to see it through. Love your reviews, keep up the great work!
So funny thing happened to me when I went to fight that last boss for the first time: The game for some reason loaded up the Maid fight instead. I easily demolished her with my high level daughters and the game proceeded as if I had fought the actual final boss, complete with final cutscene and steam achievement. So I am one of those 6% of players with the final boss achievement, but not because I actually earned it.
@@sagnicht5739 I have Wrath of the Righteous, I played through it twice and have over 280 hours in it, absolutely fantastic game. Granted, it isn't for everyone, but if you are into crpgs then it's a great choice.
I bought this game at launch and really enjoy it. That said, I am one of that 94% that hasnt completely finished the game. The comments about late game grind are spot on. That said, this game is worth the $30 purchase price, imo. if only for the experience leading up to the last boss and the unique challenges it presents. Also, I typically dont like rogue lites or overpunishing games, but I strongly recommend people at least give the nightmare mode a try before shifting to dream. It was the only mode available at launch and the game is obviously balanced around it (keeping in mind the game is meant to be punishing). While the combat is really fun, the true strategic choices in the game come from the sacrifice and resurrection mechanics - and that is where nightmare mode shines.
I've had this one in my library for sometime but didn't play it as I had played too many rogue likes and didn't feel like another. After hearing you can basically just continue the game with your starting characters I'm keen to give it another go, thanks to your video.
Totally agree. Bought it. Played about three hours and doubt I'm ever gonna touch the game again. It's too grind heavy and playing the first couple of battles over and over and over again in order to just have a chance against the first boss is not my definition of fun :/
Thanx soo much for this full review as I have had this game for a while now. I bought it because it was on PS for like $8. Now I KNOW I want to play it as I LOVE the grind. Always have... *ALWAYS* will. xD
Great video. I was really excited to find out what you thought after finishing this one. I loved the Sin City aesthetics. Glad it’s getting more exposure. Also, it’s funny that it doesn’t run well on SteamDeck but runs great on the Switch.
The last boss issue reminds me of Guided-Fate Paradox. Last boss Level 100; boss before then 60 or something. And of course level ups get progressively longer; so while you can quite naturally progress from boss to boss through the game the final boss requires hours of grind. It's a such a stupid thing to do; just ruins the end of a game for me.
Finally defeated the suffering after 29 hours of gameplay. One of the best game I’ve played imo. But the suffering is a pain to kill, who the hell would design a boss with near instant kill ability in a trpg game?????? My suggestion on defeating the last boss: Scythedancer x 2 the harvesting to grind the egg, the reaping for shredding the suffering’s armour and dealing damage soulslinger x2 shadow round (damage output combo with other daughters) full support skills (spirit haste, burst, round), equip with memory that boost initiative(e.g. reassurance, reunion), initiative boost will buy you a lot of time. Shieldbearer x 1 Tank and damage output whatever, preferably for triggering the suffering interruption. Placement: Preferably, place all you daughter near the spawn point of the suffering, immediately start shredding armour, activate shadow round, and do damage. Just try to kill the suffering as fast as you can. Do damage as fast and as much as you can while boost initiative to buy yourself more time, if all goes well, it should be a short fight rather than a long fight. Hope you find this useful, and good luck.
What fortuitous timing what with Othercide, Thronebreaker, Fallout 1 (and 76) and Wrath of the Righteous all being in the Choice Humble Bundle for the month.
this game is awsome, amazing gameplay, soundtrack is insane, i finished this some months ago, and the visual creepy and obscure, black and white with details red is crazy, nice video, hug from a brazilian fan. PS: I listen to the soundtrack to this day
If you have a power meter connected to your desktop when you play Othercide, you will see that the second it gets to the main menu, it hits your GPU full-on. I suspect this is the reason for the rapid battery drain on Steam Deck. I had a battery backup unit I had bought for my PC, essentially as a line filter (during storms we get a lot of brownouts), and running Othercide would literally trip the Battery Backup unit after getting to the main menu almost immediately.
I totally agree, is a pretty little game, but the grind (and the lack of a modding community) kill it for me. It would be nice if they give you 5th character and a new boss/enemies after you lose against the last one.
the game is part of this month humble bundle pack for 10 bucks alongside pathfinder wotr and other games, so a great value if you don't already own these games
i did enjoy this game but i hear you on the repetition. Towards the end i was not having fun at all. A bit of a let down because i enjoyed it alot at the start
Loved the game! I personally played on the easier difficulty and said "no thanks" to the final boss. Loved the game but didn't want to deal with that headache haha
randomly found this on sale and it looked pretty interesting. This is a very well done review and explained everything I wanted to know. The lack of enemy variety and the need to grind at the end is a little disappointing, but I think I'll give it a chance. It's currently at 6 bucks so eh why not.
I liked this game, quite a lot and didn't find it to be that difficult on the dream difficulty, I got a 100% of the trophies on it with just 2 recollections and I had a lot of fun with it.
Nice that you have reviewed this game! I really liked this one, first you think of the pictures and trailers that it's just some half nude dressed anime game, but that is not really the case. It's a very tactical, unforgiving fun game with neat art style.
I have to say you are the first person I have ever heard pronounce vitae as vy-tae and not as vee-tae. I decided to look up and see if I learned it wrong, but apparently it can be pronounced either way. I just pronounce like its latin derivation, vee-tae.
Been sidetracked on other games but love othercide. Haven't finished yet. Grinding on nightmare. Curious about dream, never tried. Seems like it would take far less recollections with the healing. Can just run the all soulslingers cheese with intercept and shadow every day, no?
I lost to the final boss and was so daunted I haven't touched it in months. otherwise love the game would love to see you review Geneforge! it's one that's stuck in my head for many years with an incredibly interesting setting that interweaves into the mechanics
I think Othercide went the Into the Breach way, but stopped just shy of actually showing enemy moves preview. It's a shame: with all the % based variancy in XCOM likes, it would've been refreshing to see a trun based tactical game that fully embraces being a puzzle rather than a battle; expecially considering that, as the game stands right now, you can accurately predict what every single enemy unit is goingto do in any given situation; actually showing it in game would've only removed the hassle of either memorizing or constantly checking what every enemy does
At first I thought so as well until sometimes in some missions enemies started doing random things which kind of ruined the fun. Attacking on the first turn after spawning even though you were not close, going after the wrong units (e.g. shieldbearer not targeted even though they are in range of the evil copy etc.) Still an amazing game but very frustrating at times :D
Thanks for the review, Morty m! Any chance you could let know how long did this last boss grind go? If it's like last 20% of game or 2-3 hours I wouldn't really mind :-)
I would really love it if you included the fun factor to get the 100% of a game compared to just finishing the game (I very rarely go for 100% as it is usually either grind to the max or insane trophy requirements). Great review otherwise as always
He has made a video talking about how a game can be super fun to play, but horrible to 100% so in my opinion mentioning whether he enjoyed the road to 100% for every review would be rather pointless.
I really liked the timline combat system in this game. I got 100% without really even trying. Just had to go back and do some specific things. Not a big deal, since a Scyte Dancer at max level can Solo most missions.
I beat this game early on, and the repetition was the worst thing about it, followed by the lackluster story. Identical missions, with identical spawn points for both your daughters and the enemies, as well as the later spawn-in enemies. The same tracks, kinda droning. Boss battles were fun as hell, though. I was one of the early discoverers of the busted Soulslinger chaining combo of Spirit Burst and Shadow Round (the latter in particular) for freezing time for getting a hilarious amount of attacks in a single turn. In the same victorious attempt for me (Recollection 3), I defeated the Maid, but had managed to skip the Scythedancer introduction entirely by skipping the %HP trigger, so I even beat the game without them (and they were broken as hell)! They'd already patched it out, but I had already 100%'d the game by then. I imagine the difficulty is much higher later on as a result, since the final bosses felt like they'd be incredibly difficult without that cheese.
Exactly as you said, I am stuck at the last boss fight and I (even though it is still installed) do not want to continue. I enjoyed the game until I got to this part.
Played this awhile back, went to see my achievements on it now and I got all but one. I think the one I missed is to beat the whole thing in one shot? That sounds... rough. Was a fun game though.
Mort, have you ever looked at / played Aarklash Legacy? Similar to this, there is a throwaway story but still one of my favorite active-pause combat games where party synergy matters and paying very close attention to enemy cooldowns/abilities/etc. really mattered.
REVIEW BLOONS TD6. Not being after 100% is okay, since that game is massive, but it's awesome, and will probablhy get you addicted to the possible formations and build opportunities.
On the steam deck compatibility front: Is it ok if you play while the steam deck is plugged in though? While that reduces the ability to play the game on the go, I would think that would resolve the battery issue.
I have owned this game since forever. But I haven't finished it because I got all the rules convoluted and it became too much. I might give it a try again
At least grinding seems to get you somewhere, and you can get your characters back. Darkest Dungeon needs to learn from that. That said, mandatory grinding to progress sucks. Although if you combined the progression of this game with the style and complexity of DD, their strengths might make up for each other. This one seems rewarding but simple, while DD is complex but not rewarding. Why is it so hard for designers to get into the sweet spot?

But, because you were early, you get comment replies like this one telling you to wander in wisdom and have a great day!
Your sacrifice is appreciated friend.

The soundtrack also plays a huge part in creating that creepy atmosphere, would've liked to hear your thoughts on that as well.
