Mortym, you owe yourself a playthrough of some of the older Metal Slug games. Metal Slug 3 in particular. A real blast to play and the pixel art is just absolutely gorgeous.
I love the Neo-Geo pixel art style. EDIT: I picked this up after watching your review. To anyone else considering buying it...the bugs are real. It's technically "playable" right now but that's about it. There is a lot of potential here and quite a few original ideas and mechanics but many many many bugs that make trying to enjoy the game a frustrating experience.
Just finished my first full run (about 4 hours total played) and have not encountered any bugs so far. Playing on PS4, maybe I got lucky. Regardless, I have been thoroughly enjoying this game’s spin on the TRPG genre, love the insane chains of abilities you can concoct to wipe whole screens of enemies, and I’m looking forward to using the unlocked characters and loadouts. Thanks again Mort, fantastic review as always, one of the inly reviewers I trust these days. I was super excited for this game, Metal Slug being one of my favourite quarter-munchers from back in the day; I was fortunate enough that my dad and uncle co-owned a business for a while in my hometown that had an SNK (Neo-Geo?) arcade cabinet. Good memories of Metal Slug (I think it was 2) at their place and Raiden Fighters 2 at my LGS/Collectable store. The collectable store also had the OG Adams Family pinball machine! You never know how lucky you were until you look back.
Metal Slug X is probably my favorite in the series. I've probably spent more than 100 dollars in quarters playing it so many times back in Jr. High. I felt so old when you described your experience with Metal Slug.
I kinda love that so many old-school, arcadey Japanese games are getting introduced to the PC crowd via Steam. PC gaming guys have been missing out on some of the all-time best games and it's awesome seeing a new audience discover this stuff.
Right, in the interest of transparency I think every reviewer should have to link what trophies/ achievements they unlocked to prove how much of the game they played. To this day I’m convinced the reviewer who gave a bad review to El Shadai: Ascension of the Metatron for IGN back when the review on IGN really mattered only played it through on easy difficulty based on the text of the review.
Only got three hours in, but so far I'm having a lot of fun. On the other hand, good lord there are so many concepts to wrap your head around, it's overwhelming at first
Thanks for an excellent review. Just took it off my Steam Wishlist. Although the bugs will get patched, the constant jiggling of the characters and vehicles alone would drive me crazy. But I certainly get the appeal to Metal Slug fans, it's a leap forward from side scrolling. Well, to each his own - waiting for Mars Tactics.
i was hoping it would be more TRPG than it is. I like it decent enough, but its not really what i was hoping for. that said the depth of tactical gameplay is more than ive experienced in any TRPG. its way more indepth than just stand behind person to crit and try to end turn with back to wall. You can and will play this sloppily at first until you eventually turn into rain man and start doing crazy combos and scoring the secondary objective much more often
To hear there's someone out there unfamiliar with Metal Slug as a series makes me realize how ancient I really am lmao. Loved them and played the heck out of them on arcade, PSX and eventually the Wii's Anthology. Wish they'd bring that to Steam tbh
It makes me feel old that you didn't know what this game was. When I was still in high school I would go to a pc arcade to play Battlefield, counter strike, DDR, Marvel vs Capcom 2. This was one of my favorite side stroller games of all time.

You really should play the original Slug Games. The collection of Metal Slug, Metal Slug x and Metal Slug 3 is on sale for like 3 bucks right now. These games play like contra but are arcade games so much harder, but also you can just quarter feed so you can beat them in like a few hours if you want to just plow through them.
Srpg meeting my favourite run and fun arcade game is something I never thought I'd see happen glad to see it's a good game Man those pixel animations are so gorgeous, just like in the arcade games. That and the great music always made metal slug stand out
I have been interested in checking this out! My backlog is so long, though, that I fear I’ll never get around to it. 😂 I did have one suggestion, though: It would be a great addition to your videos if you’d say, “It took me xx hours to achieve my 100% play through.” Either that, or you could include it in the description? I’m sure there are completely valid reasons for not doing this, but it’s just something I’ve noticed & I wanted to mention it. As always, thank you for all that you do; another solid review to add to your catalogue!
Honestly really surprising Metal Slug fits the TBS style so well, but they really did it justice. Also love the NEO GEO pixel style, just as beautiful as ever.
I think this is the first indie retro roguelike TRPG I've ever played and it's a solid 9/10 title, if you like Metal Slug, indie games, retro style games, roguelikes and TRPGs then your going to love this game, understandably it won't appeal to a lot of people because its so many things
As a latino i played Metal Slugs games a ton, im really enjoying this, despite the bugs, i love strategy games, and this is a good one, plus is pretty cool to see old Metal Slug bosses from an isometric perspective
It is surprising to me how you don't seem to have played Into the Breach nor Metal Slug games, I guess this is a first for me (where I am extremely used to both). It's nice that you reviewed it in the perspective of something fresh. I'm gonna take the TH-cam jazz opportunity to recommend taking a look at Kriegsfront Tactics - Prologue, I think you'd like it and it could use some eye son it, especially if you've played Front Mission games. May you wander in wisdom Mort.
Wow. Metal Slug was huge when I was a kid. And to be honest, when I heard there would be a tactical game from the Metal Slug franchise, I thought it was going to be some knockoff trash game exploiting people's nostalgia. But this looks fantastic. Definitely going to try it myself. Thanks for the review
Thanks for the video. This is not a supermassive game, so it's odd that their are so many bugs. I'm excited to see what it's like when it's finally patched. Onward to 400k. All glory to the algorithm.

Not really, melee usually does better damage especially for sync attacks because it deals more damage with the primary weapon which is what syncs use, and also lets you one shot a lot of enemies early on. It takes more work to get them into position which can be frustrating which combined with less multi target is probably what they were referring to. Mostly a preference thing I'd say

All the bugs and the long delay make me think the devs bit off more than they could chew, and SNK decided to just put their foot down with a release date.
3 days x 16 work hours per day = 48 hours, and allows for 6 hours of sleep with 2 hours of eating, showering, etc each day. I couldn't do it, but some can!

I wouldn't say it's grindy. There isn't really anything to "grind" for outside of unlocking more characters and traits to show up in runs, and even those are like 4 or 5 per gun, 3 or 4 traits per character and the characters themselves only require you to win with most of the roster / with a certain percentage of map completion. The game got pretty BS hard on higher difficulties. I do enjoy the game but tbh many of the loadouts are very combo specific with very little deviations. I feels that this game is even stricter than Into the Breach and it really dampen my enjoyment of this game. Imo it need a bit of adjustment, especially those chase the convoy bs on higher difficulties. The content like u already said is pretty lacking, none of the mod is a straight up buff for easier latter runs.
Some annoying things here and there that could be fixed with some quality of life improvements that are certainly needed for sure but it’s a GREAT Tactical/Strategy turn based game
While pixelart looks great, it is not at the level of the original Metal Slug series, I understand the budget and time limits may have an impact on that. Also the anime looking portraits and character images looks quite amateurish and unpolished, I kinda liked the cartoony Metal Slug 2 look in the selection screen, more distinct style and personality.
Yeah a lot of bugs. The first boss i didn't get how to hit him because the game didn't show me that it was possible. So i kept killing enemies around him. That made the game go into crazy nlong loading times. I also ran into the bosses not being in the right spot. killcount not working on the tank. if your character has a lot of buffs it just gets difficult to remember how they all work together with the other characters diffferent buffs. i kept having to go look at what a character could do. But to do that you have to individually click on the abbilities to read a much to small text to read on a big screen... I did have a good time but will wait now to play until thay fix some stuff
I feel strange. The MSlug is famous like one of the best run n gun, with perfect graphics, music, and humor. MS tactics - is actually not an action. Which is kinda frustration, if you want play in Metal slug which is shooter... The graphic feel quite fake. It's look like MS, but actually it have a standart indi games styles isometric. It is not metal slug style pixel art...it's like metal slug from ali express. It make me feel, like devs just use name of franchise to sold you something what you don't ask.
Feeling old with no one seeming to know about the greatness of the Metal slug series
The French team did a great job with this one - glad SNK gave them the green light. Bugs aside it’s a cracking RTRPG

Literally the only Metal Slug game since 7 to have good art direction.
As a fan of both MS and strategy games, this is a wet dream.

Great to see a new Metal Slug game that actually looks like some effort went into it

But to do that you have to individually click on the abbilities to read a much to small text to read on a big screen...
I did have a good time but will wait now to play until thay fix some stuff
This game looks fun!
got the game day one im liking it a lot
This is on gampass, for anyone only held back by the prospect of spending for it.
Maybe you should give Matchless KungFu a chance
I'm stupid or I really didnt experienced any bug in my first run
already?? Wow, Morty
wait you 100% already? ITS BEEN 3 DAYS!! HOW QUICK SOME GAMERS ARE?!
I had it a few days early
I wish they made this like Advance wars instead of the boring gameplay of boring tactics
This looked pretty generic when I played the demo. It looks way more fun than I thought originally.
I’ll buy once the game is matured by then it’s Dec sales 😂
As for today's date, november 13th 2024, the bugs are there, and they add another layer of difficulty, in a bad way.
