I can't state enough how Hark The Ghoul seems to capture that simple yet satisfying gameplay loop that souls-likes often don't seem to understand, and overcomplicate things. I like when a game is so full of mystery, and eldritch wonder. Gives me that DS1 vibe of pure curiosity overtaking you and guiding you from goal to goal. Replayability was for sure thought of when creating this! Wow
Hark the Ghoul looks super cool! And I appreciated the wavering effect for its illusory walls. That's something Demon's Souls did, but none of From's games since then have bothered. I've wondered why they stopped doing that, I think it's a good way to mark an illusory wall. Make it subtle so it's still something you have to discover, but while you're searching, you don't have to just totally guess every time you hit a wall.
I feel like dark souls 2 had an effect where the lighting worked a bit different on illusory walls from some angles, didn't it? It was easier to see in the ruin sentinels arena, because that was a large open area, but it seemed to apply to most of the non-DLC fake walls.
Oh I had to pause on that solo dev info for Glaciered. This guy worked on Project Nimbus which actually explains quite a lot about the game. While Project Nimbus isn't a souls-like it is a fast paced mech combat game with a huge focus on aerial maneuvering. Something that would translate to underwater combat even if the specifics are different.
I cannot overemphasize how much I enjoy games like Hark the ghoul that take the time to organically teach you their weirder mechanics before giving you your main weapons. Too many games give you the easy way first and you're never really encouraged to think outside the box, it's so much better if you teach the player to walk before they run so to speak.
Lepidor is such a good name for a character with insect qualities like those Bipectinate antennae. Lepidoptera is the name of the order of insects containing butterflies and moths from the greek word lepis or lepidos.
Oh hey, Hark the Ghoul! I played that demo! Literally the first thing i did before leaving the spawn room for the first time was kicking the ground to make myself jump higher. And since the devs are aware that you can use stuff like that to boost your jump, it means there's potential for them to add secrets that require you to do that! Can't wait for the finished game to come out so we can see what they have in store for us!
Love how the Alpha Guedu is just a shark. We all know sharks are so badass they wouldn't change much, just like they haven't in millions of years already.
I swear no one reviews games like you do with this sense of wonder and understanding and enthusiasm. Everyone is so negative and doesn't even appreciate what is here. You're the best dude. Fukin best.
Pine man, just want to say these are literally my favorite videos on youtube. The soulbornes genre is so unique, and you're great at putting into words what games do and do not get right when they make their own soulslikes, and what they are often missing beyond the roll button and punishing difficulty.
HARK THE GHOUL seems so sweet - I'm immediately so excited for it! I really loved Lunacid, and this seems like a very similar kind of experience. I think the decision to emphasize Dark Messiah of Might and Magic-esque physics-based combat pairs really well with this style of game as well in how it really asks you to think about the environment, and I'm really excited to see how the dev iterates on that angle. Just, seems really cool all around!
Love that the whip in Hark the Ghoul is actually fun to use, so many games just make them kinda lame. Also one game I would love to recommend is Mages of Mystralia, but it probably doesn’t fit in the souls-like gerne, still it has one of the best magic systems I’ve seen, a bit like that of Slime Heros just more complex.
Overthrown has the most generic mobile game ad artstyle but looks genuinely fun while I do wish it didn't look like... that, the movement and central gimmick seems fun enough for me to actually try it
Hey pine! Just wanted to thank you for this video. I'm moving soon , I'm currently packing up all my stuff and taking apart my desk. Thankfully, now I have about 90 minutes of content to enjoy while doing so.
These are my favourite videos on TH-cam! Your opinion and criticism on games and how you thoroughly enjoy everyone and never have anything super negative to say is a breath of fresh air! Thanks for these awesome Uploads pineapple! 🤘
I don't think I've ever heard you as excited as you were playing Glaciered in any of your videos yet. Was great seeing your love for that game shine through so clearly. Hopefully the dev sees this and sees how excited you were to play it.
There's no words that can describe how happy i am to see that this series is still going strong. I swear those videos always fill me with a mix feeling of relaxation and excitement. Wishing you the best buddy, stay strong !
I liked AI Limit's demo a lot. It felt... comfy to me, personally? It's not trying to reinvent the wheel, it's just... standard but in a comforting way. Familiar, enjoyable.
fun fact, the boss in mohrta named "gashadokuro" is a reference to a popular japanese creature commonly known for being featured in the japanese artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi's woodblock piece named "Mitsukuni Defying the Skeleton Spectre Invoked by Princess Takiyasha".
Sharks getting the short end of the stick again while dolphins go around giving everyone surprise "love" which is just one of the many gifts they bestow upon others.
YES, YOU COVERED OVERTHROWN! fun fact, you didn't try throwing things into the sky for a funny easter egg and there was a helicopter attack with the great sword
If you haven't done an Eternal Ring play thru yet you should try it out and make a video. Its one of Fromsofts early titles that doesn't get a lot of mention. The dialog is hilarious and the game is interesting and challenging
6:05 eyyy that's the glavenus tailspin The part system, and semi-realistic ecologu on top of that means this is technically a monster hunter-like, and confusing one for the other is a terminal sin and the fbi will be at your location soon 😔
A Souls like is a game that's kind of like Dark Souls maybe that means your character can roll around maybe you have to worry about a stamina bar or maybe big monsters just want to sit on you whatever it might be I like to find Souls likes that you probably haven't seen so if that sounds interesting this is episode X of steam dumpster diving
I'm gonna join the echo chamber here, because honestly: Glaciered being a single dev project is beyond insane. The guy is fueling his project on hatred alone, because his assets, artwork, mechanics, everything is at least single A level. Maybe even AA. All he's lacking is the funding. It's almost hard to believe it's one guy doing all that alone.
I hekking love this series. It's so fun to watch you showcase and try games many others would ignore. Also your laugh is incredibly infectious. Loves the series you have, love what you do!
Bro, glacierd is real hidden gem. Obviously the devs loves what he does because it shines through in every aspect. Sadly i lack the patience for soulsborne games but i hope some content creators i watch pick it up so i can enjoy that wild ride
The most famous series has returned, and in the most longest format, and its good. I watched everyone of this and never cease to amaze me the quantity of games of this genre, some games have been finished the Early Acces state, like Devil Slayer Raksasi, and some other new games arrive, like HunterX and HunterX CodeNameT, note, this one is a recomendation :) So, keep it up with the most cherished section of TH-cam and expanding my library of games, you are the best.
The penguin-soul being a solo project is out this this world.. hope he manages to finish it, would be super high on my list great setting awesome visuals
That first game looked amazing, for a solo dev too?!? I truly hope he fully fleshes it out and doesn't rush near the end like so many games fall victim to. If he makes the whole game like the demos quality with a vast fleshed out world, I could see that being among game of the year conversations.
Yes but also no. it was made in GZDoom engine. Still impressive, cause its not a standard engine, and uses its own code, but its only based on the og doom engine, but uses opengl, so it supports full 3D floors and slopes, dynamic lighting, new rendering methods, new hardware support, and a ton of other things doom engine doesnt support. Its kinda like saying a volkswagen beetle won the F1, and then showing a modded beetle that uses all of 4 screws and part of the chassi of the original car, and is just a modernized racing car in every other way. Again, its cool that it uses GZDoom (also makes sense to make a doom style game in a doom style engine). but that engine is nothing like the original doom engine by now.
Yes yes yes yes yes I love these, also could you try jotun I think it’s perfect for this series I haven’t seen much about it but the game is a semi-boss rush and environmental exploration game
After you introduced lunacid to me a while ago in one of these videos and it quickly became one of my all time fav games hark the ghoul looks like it could scratch the same itch SUPER excited to keep up with that one
Thank you for invating me to get into, it was fun
HI VAATI!

Ivating… the delicate line between inviting and invading
I can't believe Glaciered was a solo indie project. Crazy impressive
Definitely looking forward to it, looks fantastic, especially for a solo dev.
I also can't think of any other souls games that are underwater and use swimming as it's movement which is awesome!
Open area where a whalesharks lurking around if you decide to poke your head in outerbounds!
Exactly looks better then a good chunk of games out now
crazy what one guy can do today. i keep comparing this to studio productions 20 years ago
Another incredible penguin-type game featured in this series
I can't state enough how Hark The Ghoul seems to capture that simple yet satisfying gameplay loop that souls-likes often don't seem to understand, and overcomplicate things. I like when a game is so full of mystery, and eldritch wonder. Gives me that DS1 vibe of pure curiosity overtaking you and guiding you from goal to goal. I mean thats cause its being a kingsfield like instead of a souls like. Deffo more my style tbh
"PUI NOOOOOOO"
Never have I heard such anguish from Iron Pineapple

makes sense, that lockon and laser sword looked straight out of zone of the enders
Damn Hark the Ghoul looks fun, gonna add that to my wish list
Same that one looks incredible
I have never heard Pine more distraught then when Pui wasn't waking up!
I cannot overemphasize how much I enjoy games like Hark the ghoul that take the time to organically teach you their weirder mechanics before giving you your main weapons. This series is the opposite of a vicious cycle, the more videos you make, the more great games get made because of it!
FYI that’s called a virtuous cycle.
@@mattinm But then what's the opposite of a virtuous cycle... 🤔
Let's fucking GOOOO. My favourite long running series on TH-cam.
rip sleep
yes I agree, I love these videos and cant wait to watch them when I see them in my feed.
Lepidor is such a good name for a character with insect qualities like those Bipectinate antennae. Lepidoptera is the name of the order of insects containing butterflies and moths from the greek word lepis or lepidos.
Bro that Overthrown is real hidden gem. And the solo indie one have a future too!
yeah hope that overthrown gets fleshed out, super juicy and unique and fresh
Your grenade blowing up the barrel for a bunch of bonus damage on that final guy for Hark The Ghoul is a fantastic finale.
Fuck yeah this is what we need on a Friday
finally, my favorite *"if it has a dodge roll, it's souls-like"* series is back.
Oh hey, Hark the Ghoul! I played that demo! Literally the first thing i did before leaving the spawn room for the first time was kicking the ground to make myself jump higher. Funny thing, Mohrta seems to be running on some version of the doom engine(specifically gzdoom) since the settings menu is the default one
I did wonder that, seeing the "basic" ai, but there are ways around that.
Hell yes! The only series I will always watch every single release of on TH-cam.
lies of penguin 3 Looks good 1:30
Overthrown has the most generic mobile game ad artstyle but looks genuinely fun

Glaciered: "This is the Sea of Tranquility"
me: isn't that a place on the moon?

The craziest thing about Glaciered is it’s the second penguin souls-like in this series
I'm honestly a little sad that Dark Bowls Gwynevere didn't have just two giant bowling balls instead of breasts. Seems a missed opportunity.
1:01:30 "n-no really, I pick the girls because they get better outfit options!"
1:23:45 don't forget about the explosive double jump and aerial dodge being basically Gerbera from DMC5.
I don't think I've ever heard you as excited as you were playing Glaciered in any of your videos yet. Was great seeing your love for that game shine through so clearly. Hopefully the dev sees this and sees how excited you were to play it.
When I tried out Flintlock a little while ago, I immediately thought “Pineapple’s gonna put this in one of his Soulslike videos.”
There's no words that can describe how happy i am to see that this series is still going strong.

I liked AI Limit's demo a lot. It felt... comfy to me, personally? It's not trying to reinvent the wheel, it's just... standard but in a comforting way. Familiar, enjoyable.
Mohrta looks heavily inspired by Kill Six Billion Demons
I thought so too. The main character looks like Kierinsaval of the Golden Feather mixed with the Goggled Swordsman and Layla Brimstone the Gun Witch.
fun fact, the boss in mohrta named "gashadokuro" is a reference to a popular japanese creature commonly known for being featured in the japanese artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi's woodblock piece named "Mitsukuni Defying the Skeleton Spectre Invoked by Princess Takiyasha".
30:10 “Geneva Convention? More like Geneva Suggestion!”

I thought I'd thoroughly explored the demo to AI Limit, but I never found the snail or flying meatball thing.
34:58 not me blushing when Pine says "who wants to get railed?"
I love that you find these hidden gems, cuz now I have more games to sit in my steam library
Glaciered: finally someone steps up to make a true sequel to EVO: Search For Eden.
Sharks getting the short end of the stick again while dolphins go around giving everyone surprise "love" which is just one of the many gifts they bestow upon others.
I’ll never get sick of pineapple reading out subtitles in his trademark monotone, it kills me every time
“I’m rapidly evolving, changing my DNA” Dracula Flow type beat
YES, YOU COVERED OVERTHROWN!

Overthrown giving you the city building experience of an OP anime character is hilarious.

The Fallen Relics devs have the perfect opportunity to change the name of the Cyclops to Biclops.
"Hey.. you wanna plant some more crops...? No...?
Ok let's research butchering!"
After watching all of this series, it feels almost like Hark the Ghoul was a game created specifically for Pine to show it in one of these videos.
Hell yeah, thanks for saving my Friday night.

Just gonna mention a game called Last Command, it's basically a souls-like snake game so you could try that

Gotta say, I love the pixelated low poly art style some indie games are going for, just feels so pleasing to watch.
I was not expecting to start my day with "this mutant penguin armored core game kicks ass".
Dark the Ghoul looks awesome, Lunacid was one of my favorite games you introduced to me through this series so I'm excited for it
I just think that this being episode 27 of this series is crazy. Love what you do, please keep doing it!
You should try Mana Spark. It is an isometric souls-like and is really fun.
This has gotta be the first SDD episode where I've wishlisted almost every game features. Absolute banger, Pine.
Great selection this time, so fun and I love hearing your feedback on the different game ideas! Very comforting to see a new video from Pine anytime!
