+chaseontwowheels Im with you on that. We dont get as much recognition as the surf/skate/bmx groups do. Glad to see a large name company giving us some love.
As an avid backpacker and photographer, I find myself out in the elements for days at a time. With the form factor and water resistance of this new Session (others had it too, sure but not without a case), it's allowed me to pack it in with me and I've done some pretty clever things with it so far. It's not all about FPS and ultimate video quality. For some, it's good enough having 1080p 60fps. Great video, thanks for the upload and thoughts!
Greetings "RevZilla," I want to thank you for this excellent and informative video about the GoPro Hero4 Session Review. It is so nice to see a quality made video by someone who not only knows how to shoot and film video, and one who actually offers valuable, important and honest critique about a product. I am a videographer of a sort and have done videography film work on a semiprofessional basis. I've watched several videos online about the "GoPro Session" and have not been too keen on the opinions offered. Most of them were very personally biased with strongly worded opinions that bordered on obsessively negative and crude. Your commentary input and information is honest, straightforward and clean. You offered information about the abilities, the pros and the cons and gave valuable info to any perspective viewer about the Hero4 Session by GoPro. Even though the Session camera is not the highest resolution camera on the market, the imagery is actually very good. It is clean, well saturated, but not overly saturated as is the case with some cameras. For the average film maker/videographer, this camera is more than adequate. yes, the dynamic range is somewhat lacking, but the imagery is very clean, though slightly out of focus and not as sharp as it could be. Furthermore, this little camera shoots and offers broadcast quality footage that is perfectly acceptable in the TV Broadcast world. For the price I think it's a pretty good camera. My wife just bought and gave me a Hero4 Session GoPro for Christmas. This is my very first gopro camera. However, I own and use a Canon GL2 camcorder, an older "Prosumer" camera that is actually a "3CCD" unit with amazing color resolution. As good as the old unit is, the little gopro is actually outshining this old camcorder of mine, which will be retired soon enough. I am still on the learning curb with the Hero4 Session and am exploring, studying and getting to know this unit. I am amazed that something so small can produce remarkable videos and still images. However based on research, the "Hero4, and all the GoPro units are actually employing and using existing technology that was originally developed for the wireless smartphone technology. At their core, the cameras in a gopro and a smartphone are essentially and nearly identical. The underlying and most notable differences are how the cameras are used, but the basic architecture of the 2 cameras are essentially the same. Both smart phone cameras and the gopro shoot stunningly beautiful images and the videos are nothing short of amazing. I am truly amazed at how far video and camera technology has come in such a short period of time. I still remember when personal computers didn't even exist, now look where we are. I am excited to have my Hero4 session camera and am looking forward to using it and exploring what I can and can't do with it. Although it does have its drawbacks, such as a one hour limit for filming, I see the potentials of my new camera. again, thank you for this very well made and informative video review of my new camera.
I really like this video. It's not bashing the product like other reviews and giving examples to both a positive and negative view point. Easily the best review online. Thank you for helping me making my first GoPro purchase.
Phila Naval Business Center / ShipYard coming in thru the 26th street side.. The fact the road he is on has potholes, ruts, and more craters than the moon shows the cam has a fairly steady picture.
The little white thing that no one knows what to do with them are not only intended to lock the camera, but its main purpose is anti-vibration. It reduces the vibration of both video and sound.
Hey *****, sure thing, I'm glad that this helped. To me, it does make a difference and a pretty big one, but then again I have a twin-v engine and those like to vibrate :) Cheers!
I have this camera, and if you use it as a dashcam like I do, there's one major drawback: What they call "looping mode" doesn't actually loop at all if you stop recording even once. E.g.; if you set the segment rate to 5 min and record 15 min (3 5 min. files), then stop recording, those 3 files will not be written over if in the next session(s) you run out of SD space. Not only that, on the next session(s) no looping will actually happen. It only loops (by deleting the oldest file), at all, if you run out of SD space during ONE continuous session. So, they use a really creative and unique - read, BS - definition of "looping". As a dashcam it doesn't really work. You have to delete the whole SD on a regular basis. I got on their forum and brought this up, and they explained to me that it's designed this way because "it's designed for use as an action cam", which makes no sense to me. Every other "action cam" out there has a true looping mode that loops no matter what, through power cycles, any number of takes. Even the cheapest $20 eBay gopro knockoffs. It's especially nonsensical of them IMO, because all they'd have to do is add a simple setting to change this behavior. Call it 'dashcam mode'. Whatever. It's a simple software change, not hardware at all. So instead I'm having to look into gopro firmware hacking to add the feature myself. Thank you Redditors on r/goprohack.
I have a love hate relationship with the GoPro Session. Love the form factor, all in one water proof housing, quick rotation system and the new mounts. That mount system is well over due for a refresh. A $250 entry price point would have been perfect. Awesome review dude!
Really enjoyed the actual review. Not some paid guy just talking about how great it is and at the end he says he hasn't used it yet but he's really excited to.
Your feed back: Great job and nice recording. The picture quality is very good on my computer, I see no reason for something better, although I am not doing professional work. Many times it is hard to sit through a video like this, but this one held my interest all the way through. Well done.
Thanks for the review, I am looking at picking one up for my trips next year and want to spend as little time as possible doing video editing. I just want to record at some nice spots on the road, make a 5 minute video set to music from each weekend trip I do and then be done with it. Sounds like this will be the one to get!
in this entire video you guys noticed that you couldn't hear the wind xD which is a coll feature it has 2 mics and when winds come in the front mic then audio changes to the back mic which is better for him to talk even though is to close
sometimes i ride through the philly shipyard just to see if i can find somebody from revzilla filming and eventually see myself in one of their videos. Iv seen Lemmy do a recording session at the showroom (they have a window that lets you see into their recording studio). But to randomly see myself in their videos has been a personal goal of mine lol.
As a motovlogger I would certainly like the smaller design but I worry about the ability to record audio. I suppose I will just have to try it out and if nothing else use it for a bike mounted camera. Thank you for the in depth review, the quality was very crisp and I look forward to testing the product myself once I collect the funds. Also hey +BrockGrimes!
I like this unit, and if I didn't have a Hero3, I probably would buy one with the Bluetooth mic. However, I have stereo mic inside my helmet and a Bluetooth Transmitter and Receiver to connect the bike mounted camera. I don't like helmet mount videos bouncing around, and I've removed all but one. The point is there are multiple ways of doing this, and I like the small Hero4 Session for general use.
I'm considering the Session as a daily riding camera. But currently I'm running the Hero4 Black and I hate the battery life. What is the real world difference when it comes to the battery life?????
Considering buying one of these for awhile now. Just want a GoPro that can take good quality video and pictures while riding or similar activity. I don't need to make audio high quality motovlog type vids
Absolutely the best review! But how could you make it so clear and perfect? I mean, the video quality! I've watched so many reviews with the same configurations 1080p - 60fps and they seemed to be really poor! Shaky ... I wonder why... Congrats mate! Great video! Cheers!
Considering we've produced thousands of videos on our channel, a lot of it comes down to having a lot of experience with shooting and editing video. -DrewZilla
RevZilla so that means the camera itself won't be that great thing when used by an inexperienced person ? And also the camera isn't that great but a good hand editing the video would be able to make it happen ?
Like anything, practice makes perfect. The more you practice and play around with shooting video, the better one can get. Often, people just tighten the mount screws by hand. Using an actual screwdriver to get the mounts a bit tighter can reduce vibration. We also play around with mounting locations to see what works best. With any camera, you would need to do the same. -DrewZilla
Got it ! Absolutely stunning video quality! For sure is the best one! I appreciate your reply and keep doing things like that! Absolutely perfect! Cheers!
Very good video, full of useful information, well presented. I've just purchased one and was looking for a few tips 'n tricks to get the best out of it.
I have two concerns. My main camera is a hero4 silver. I use a few different cams for secondary locations. I am considering replacing them with sessions. Pro's would be the lower profile and ability for everything to run off the same remote. These would be for the rear facing and side facing cams, with the 4 silver remaining the main forward facing cam. My concerns are the battery and the lense cover. I typically run the bike cams off 12v power when I am on an all day ride (I do a lot of touring). I assume you would have to disassemble the door to keep it plugged in to power, also risking the non-replacable battery by keeping it plugged in. Replacing that lense cover seems more expensive than a cheap skeleton case for a hero 3 or 4. I have had rocks kick up and smack my cameras fairly regularly. I am really tempted, though. The form factor is really attracting me and being able to sync all my bike cams to a single remote would be great. One question on settings. Can you set the session for simultaneous video and still shots like I can on my hero4?
Can you view live video on your phone from the Session camera? This would be helpful for wakeboarding- a person on the boat can tell the rider to adjust the camera slightly for a better angle without taking the camera off.
best bet would be to run a splitter out of the headphone out in your sena, one into headphones or your speakers one into a 3.5 to 3.5 cable and into a phone or audio recorder, then sync up in post
Great review man. I just got a bike, learning to ride and all that, and I'm looking for a action cam to stick to the tank so I can record my rides. I've seen so many "Gopro session is shit" reviews, but they never talk about the stuff you mention - it's like a cirklejerk where they all end up agreeing that "Yea you should get a RED to record all your stuff." which is completely ridiculous. Anyway, seeing as this is the cheapest option right now I think I'm gonna go with one. Great channel, great reviews.
Hey man! What settings were you using on ur GoPro Session in this video? By that i mean, 1080p or 720p? Superview OR standard view? 60fps/48fps/30fps? Also did u use protune or any other settings externally to achieve that result? :3 The more info the better sir! Thanks in advance Rev!
+Ducati NYC Vlog We'd also recommend offsetting the mount to either side of the vent perhaps with the ball mount to keep it pointed straight and level. -DrewZilla
+Ryan Schultz ah... good point. thats what i use now - like 4 adapters to center the cam on my chin from the side. There has to be a better, or at least sexier way. Also need some wireless mics. What are you using for wireless mics?
+Ryan Schultz Nice! And which Sena are you using to record the voice? SMH10 or the newer one? Is it true that the quality of SMH10 for voice recording is not the best?
I have one and I've been mainly using it as a "dash cam". The wind noise cancels out engine noise in vids but I haven't tried putting a piece of electrical tape over the mic holes. I find it very difficult to transfer vids to my computer with the free GoPro app. When I click import media, it opens the files explorer, or it's just not accessible - like the button is not highlit. . insert the sd card directly into your computer because it takes forever if you use the usb cable. (Windows 10) but then it wants to put them in Windows Media, and not the GoPro app. The Doid RC app is cool, but it takes 6-7 tries to connect to the camera before anything happens, and the WiFi seems very weak and disconnects sometimes.Vibration? Also, how the hell do I turn the damn thing off. The red button shuts it down, but the LED keeps blinking 24/7 and when I go to use it again the battery is dead. I bought an external battery because at high def, and with connectivity, the camera battery will only last a little over an hour.
Im having crazy problems with this camera. Battery lasts 45-70 min, from a full charge. viewing media is almost impossible.....7/10 times i get a "cannot view" media....then when i do get it to work and try to make a clip, even as small as 5 seconds, i get a " cannot share" message. sometimes just to preview a clip it will think for almost two min......
just purchased the camera last week. thanks for the tutorial. what mic would you suggest???? I already know I would have to buy the audio adapter...GoPro mic?
For a helmet cam setup to simply capture moments for a safety reason, so capturing license plate info and other important information. Would you go session or hero4 black?
+Rooz Rafie I'd get the Hero4 Silver along with extra batteries. If you're recording constantly, you'll need the extra batteries. The Session doesn't have replaceable batteries and can't really be charged while in use. You don't need the extra resolution of the Black version, so save your money, and go for the Silver.-DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/gopro-hero4-silver-camera *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/gopro-hero4-dual-battery-charger-with-battery *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/gopro-hero4-rechargeable-battery
This GoPro Hero4 Session does not have an external audio input. In the video, we had a Sena Bluetooth communicator connected via Bluetooth to a Sena GP10 GoPro Audio Back attached to a regular GoPro Hero4 Silver carried in a pocket, and that was used solely to record audio. We already had those devices, but most people don't, so for simple motovlogging, you might consider the Sena Prism Tube. If you already have a Bluetooth communicator, I recommend getting the regular Sena Prism (if you don't have a communicator, get the Sena 10R. If you want a communicator that also records helmet-mounted video, consider the all-in-one Sena 10C. Hope this helps! -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sena-bluetooth-audio-back-for-gopro-with-waterproof-housing *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/gopro-hero4-silver-camera *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sena-prism-tube-camera*www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sena-prism-bluetooth-action-camera-motorsports-pack *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sena-10r-low-profile-motorcycle-bluetooth-headset *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sena-10c-bluetooth-headset-camera
i just bought a session 4 a couple of days ago, and recorded some video riding on the highway. the wind noise is crazy . so i,m thinking if you stick a little piece of tape over the front microphone, that would probably help cut down some of the noise. well i did just that, and now i will go out and try it. ill let you know if it works.
Planing on buying one buy for fishing videos on the boat do you think it would be okay for that. Battery is not a problem has I can hook it in to 12v and keep it charged
Hi Great informative videos, many thanks. I have just bought a Goldwing Trike and am planning on the Schuberth C3 helmets each with SRC. I would also like to record our trips using a go pro. Could you please advise how I connect the audio from the SRC mike to the Gopro?
This GoPro Hero4 Session does not have an external audio input. In the video, we had a Sena Bluetooth communicator connected via Bluetooth to a Sena GP10 GoPro Audio Back attached to a regular GoPro Hero4 Black (or Hero4 Silver) carried in a pocket, and that was used solely to record audio. We already had those devices, but most people don't, so for your application, I recommend getting the Bluetooth-capable Sena Prism Camera along with the Sena 10U Communicator for Schuberth C3/C3 Pro. Like the Schuberth SRC system, the Sena 10U is a specific fit for the C3 Pro, but the 10U is newer, more affordable, and more compatible with Sena's Prism camera and Sena's Bluetooth Audio Back for GoPro. Hope this helps! -DrewZilla (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sena-bluetooth-audio-back-for-gopro-with-waterproof-housing) (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/gopro-hero4-silver-camera) (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/gopro-hero4-black-camera) (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sena-prism-bluetooth-action-camera-motorsports-pack) (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sena-10u-bluetooth-headset)
between the session and the hero+ which do you think would be the best for a track day? I'm planning on mounting it to the gas tank and I'm concerned about any audio issues they may have. thanks for your time!
thanks for the reply...another thing i read and see a lot of reviews saying that the image and video quality is not as good as compare to the hero4 silver. since you have been using it for sometime, whats your opinion on this? i have been thinking whether to get the hero4 session or hero4 silver...
+Ocean Eleven I recommend you read the companion article linked in the description, as Ryan details the differences. Basically, though, image quality is better with the Hero4 Silver. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/common-tread/gopro-hero4-session-does-a-small-package-still-deliver
I'm looking at this camera from a commuter stand point just as street protection. I don't particularly care about how high of a quality the picture is. What is the realistic expectation of battery life on the lowest quality settings? Also, can I set the camera to loop data so I it will overwrite the oldest data? Thanks!
+Chris Ireland GoPro's longest battery life claim is 2 hours 5 minutes in 1080p30 fps resolution with WiFi off, and yes, there is a "Looping" mode. Hope this helps! -DrewZilla
with disappointing session sales, and gopro stock dropping, the company has announced a second price drop from 399 to 299 and now 199. how does this affect your recommendation?
+A TG I think it makes it a better option at the lower price. If your main goal is motovlogging and you already have a Bluetooth communicator, get the Sena Prism instead. If you want a really compact camera you can place almost anywhere, go for the Session. If you think you're going to use a lot of batteries, step up to the Hero4 Silver. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sena-prism-bluetooth-action-camera-lite-pack *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/gopro-hero4-session-camera *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/gopro-hero4-silver-camera
+Fabio Barbieri No, we recorded audio to a separate GoPro in a pocket by using the Sena 20S communicator paired via Bluetooth to the Sena GP10 Audio Back for GoPro (which was connected to the GoPro). The Hero4 Session does not have any way to record audio wirelessly. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sena-20s-bluetooth-headset *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/gopro-hero4-silver-camera *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sena-bluetooth-audio-back-for-gopro-with-waterproof-housing
Awesome review! Would this camera be sufficient to record speedo shots of my car during the day and at night??Also how would this camera stack up against some low light settings like at a drag strip with a bright bulbed scoreboard?
+VWRACING1320 The Session actually has a good low-light setting, so it should work well for speedo shots as well as automatically dealing with the scoreboard lighting. -DrewZilla
hey RevZilla, does the glass lens scratch easily? from the way you use it any prone to scratches? i intend to buy one and was thinking if there is a need to buy a screen protector film to protect the glass from scratches or breaks. do advise?
Old post I know but I use this as of now and find the video to be almost like in slow motion, aka not smooth or actually speed I am doing. I am shooting in 1080p 60 or 30 wide view, seems to make know diff when I play back what I shoot and I have it mounted on chin part of helmet. Any advice on what I am doing wrong. Thanks
Hey I have a question: I have a session 4 and the sound is just horrible past 30 km/h because of the wind... do you also have this issue on a standard gopro since it's protected by a box that may stop the wind?
We aren't using the Session with Bluetooth. In the video, we had a Sena Bluetooth communicator connected via Bluetooth to a Sena GP10 GoPro Audio Back attached to a regular GoPro Hero4 carried in a pocket, and that was used solely to record audio. We already had those devices, but most people don't, so for simple motovlogging, you might consider the Sena Prism Tube. If you already have a Bluetooth communicator, I recommend getting the regular Sena Prism (if you don't have a communicator, get the Sena SMH10R. If you don't have a communicator and just want to record helmet-mounted video, consider the all-in-one Sena 10C. I just got this camera for Christmas and I want to use it for motovlogging. Two things are killing me right now: 1. There is no way to hook up an external mic to the camera, so you have to use a separate setup to record in-helmet audio, and 2. This camera looks like it sticks out a ton compared to the other GoPros (when you look at it from the side-profile while it's chin-mounted to a helmet). It's definitely smaller than the others, but it's thicker-- something to consider if you're planning to chin-mount it on your helmet. Any ideas on the best way to record in-helmet audio since I can't attach a mic adapter to the Session?
+William Opie Perhaps run a microphone from the helmet into a cell phone and use a voice-recording app or use a digital audio recorder. Then sync the audio and video by clapping in front of the camera. Line up the audio and the video clapping in post. -DrewZilla
Awesome video!!! I have one question, in your opinion, how much confidence would you have with side mount security with speeds of 150+?? I would be so nervous the thing would fly off. Thanks again, be safe!
Thanks for the reply, Ryan. I'm in the market for a entry level camera, and I think I'd like the option to run a mic into the helmet for motovlogging. Just wish the other GoPro units weren't so damn expensive. Seriously considering a Drift Ghost.
+BigRedYeti I'm excited about the newly-announced Sena Prism Tube. It has an external microphone and speaker, so it looks like an easy (and affordable) way to get into motovlogging. No word on pricing yet though! -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sena-prism-tube
+RevZilla Hmmmm. I had not heard of the Prism Tube before, but I'm interested after reading the specs. I'll keep it on my radar for now. Much thanks, Drew!
+Shaun Tiger1050 We recorded audio with the Sena 20S paired to a Sena GP10 Audio Back connected to a regular GoPro. That GoPro was used solely for the audio recording. All the video was captured with the Hero4 Session Cameras. If you already have a Bluetooth communicator, you may want a Sena Prism instead of a Hero4 Session to record your voice. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sena-20s-bluetooth-headset *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sena-bluetooth-audio-back-for-gopro-with-waterproof-housing *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/gopro-hero4-silver-camera *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sena-prism-bluetooth-action-camera-motorsports-pack
IHi I've had three sena gp10's over a short period of time, but they all had connectivity issues, when riding with other paired Bluetooth devices i.e. SatNav, mobile phones, headsets etc. it became to much of a hassle, especially when i'd made an awesome video only to find the audio had been kicked off, so went with a wired mic which works everytime. I only asked because no audio devices were visible in your video, but thanks for the speedy reply👍
+Alosh Yeahbois If you want to record your voice with a separate external microphone, then the Session would not be good for a travel vlog, because the Session does not support an external microphone input. If you want to make a motovlog with a helmet-mounted camera, a really affordable option would be the new Sena Prism Tube. If you are not making a motovlog and you just want to use the camera's built-in microphone, then the Session is a nice compact option. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sena-prism-tube-camera
Dude great video but you kept mention how they dropped price by $100 bucks, but you never say how much it is.and what it includes ..1 camera or 2 ? as you have like what 4 ,5 cameras ?
They dropped the price from $400 to $300 and now to $200. The cameras are sold individually and come with a couple adhesive mounts and frames. Memory cards are sold separately. There is now a new improved Hero5 Session for about $300 as well. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/common-tread/video-gopro-hero5-black-and-hero5-session-review
hi, can I ask how you recorded the audio?? did you use a separate app to record the audio and cancel out the audio from the gopro. this video has been a help for deciding what camera to get as broke my hero1. cheers
+Jonathan Casey I'll start with your follow-up question. No, you cannot really charge it while using it. As for the audio, in the video, we had a Sena Bluetooth communicator connected via Bluetooth to a Sena GP10 GoPro Audio Back attached to a regular GoPro Hero4 carried in a pocket, and that was used solely to record audio. We already had those devices, but most people don't, so for simple motovlogging, you might consider the Sena Prism Tube. If you already have a Bluetooth communicator, I recommend getting the regular Sena Prism (if you don't have a communicator, get the Sena SMH10R. What audio set up did you use while recording this video? Im looking at the session and was curious what microphone to use, can i use something like my sena smh10?
+Levi B If you have a Sena SMH10, you may be better off using the Sena Prism, since you can pair the Prism and SMH10 together for recording audio from your SMH10 to the camera via Bluetooth. -DrewZilla *www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sena-prism-bluetooth-action-camera-lite-pack
If you want to record continuously, connect the camera to the GoPro App on a smartphone, select video mode to be looping, then select looping intervals, and select your preferred interval. These instructions are also detailed in the owner's manual. -DrewZilla
if there is anyone out there that has had the older gopros like the hero 3 and or just has the session cause on my hero 3 it takes more that 5 mins to download a 15 second video when filming on 1080p at 60fps and i was wondering if it is any faster over wifi to a phone? PLEASE HELP
Love that fact that you mentioned motovloggers in this review!
+chaseontwowheels Im with you on that. We dont get as much recognition as the surf/skate/bmx groups do. Glad to see a large name company giving us some love.
+chaseontwowheels I was thinking the same thing
+chaseontwowheels great review indeed. i like.
+chaseontwowheels Ditto.
+chaseontwowheels Agreed, I've been on the fence with this one for awhile now too.
I really like this almost uncut-review! Well done, nice video
As an avid backpacker and photographer, I find myself out in the elements for days at a time. Greetings "RevZilla,"
I want to thank you for this excellent and informative video about the GoPro Hero4 Session Review.
I like how you included that part at the end
This is best review on TH-cam,bought one and love it.
To me, it does make a difference and a pretty big one, but then again I have a twin-v engine and those like to vibrate :)
Cheers!
Definitely a good idea to review it while using it and showing to test footage. Unbiased review, very complete!
+HeroofSomething Well, he is paid to do this, as I'm pretty sure he works for Revzilla. But that isn't a bad thing.
Awesome review! I use the session for mountainbike videos and i just love how small it is and what you can do with it
Your feed back: Great job and nice recording.
No brainier purchase at $179.00 for Black Friday.
sometimes i ride through the philly shipyard just to see if i can find somebody from revzilla filming and eventually see myself in one of their videos. Iv seen Lemmy do a recording session at the showroom (they have a window that lets you see into their recording studio). But to randomly see myself in their videos has been a personal goal of mine lol.
Awesome video, really useful info. Many thanks.
AWESOME video, dude. Well done.
This was a very well put together video. I really enjoyed it!
I'm considering the Session as a daily riding camera. But currently I'm running the Hero4 Black and I hate the battery life. What is the real world difference when it comes to the battery life?????
Thanks for making such a clear video on the GoPro session! Getting one tomorrow!
Also, were you shooting in 30fps or 60fps?
+Raymond Teong I believe Ryan mentioned in another comment that he was shooting 1080p60. -DrewZilla
Cheers!
I have a gopro hero 4 session but i wish you were able to use an external mic to cut down on wind noise
+Keith Kellam Unlike your Hero4 Silver, the Hero4 Session does not have "Video + Photo Mode". -DrewZilla
Can you view live video on your phone from the Session camera? This would be helpful for wakeboarding- a person on the boat can tell the rider to adjust the camera slightly for a better angle without taking the camera off.
+Hunt Boys Yes, you can pair the Session with the GoPro app on your compatible phone to set up your camera angle. -DrewZilla
What did you use to record your audio for this vid?
Figured that's what you did. I have a friend who uses his smart phone with a mic.
I was just going to ask the same question haha
+Ryan Schultz all my vids on TH-cam were done with an original hero hd with a hacked in external mic adapter. I'm bumping up to a 4 black now.
+Ryan Schultz So you can't record audio on the the Sessions from your Sena ? Do you think that Go Pro will have a way to do that in the future?
best bet would be to run a splitter out of the headphone out in your sena, one into headphones or your speakers one into a 3.5 to 3.5 cable and into a phone or audio recorder, then sync up in post
+Ryan Schultz much appreciated mate
Mounting it on the chin - is that really enough sticker overlap for it to stay there? You can't adjust the vent anymore i presume
+Ducati NYC Vlog We'd also recommend offsetting the mount to either side of the vent perhaps with the ball mount to keep it pointed straight and level. -DrewZilla
+RevZilla ball mount - smart smart smart.
+Ryan Schultz Nice. Thank you for all the replies, man. What DO you use for a headset?
Really want this gopro but it sucks not having an external mic option.
You should get a small pop filter for your microphone! It gets rid of all the mic blowing thing wich is noticable annoying :)
Great video ..Thanks, going to get one .looks to be the right camera for , my extreme off road trail riding ...Cheers boys !!
I feel like you need a mini deadcat on your mic :)
You're better than most motovloggers
Great review well put together thanks for taking the time this really helped
Im having crazy problems with this camera. Battery lasts 45-70 min, from a full charge. viewing media is almost impossible.....7/10 times i get a "cannot view" media....then when i do get it to work and try to make a clip, even as small as 5 seconds, i get a " cannot share" message. sometimes just to preview a clip it will think for almost two min......
just purchased the camera last week. thanks for the tutorial. what mic would you suggest???? I already know I would have to buy the audio adapter...GoPro mic?
We don't have a specific microphone recommendation, but whatever mic you use, a wind sock over the mic helps reduce wind noise. -DrewZilla
cool.. thanks for the info. I think I'm ready for a gopro
You don't need the extra resolution of the Black version, so save your money, and go for the Silver.-DrewZilla

What are you using for a mic in this video? I want a begginer motovlogging camera and mic, and i planned on getting that as a camera.
-DrewZilla

What bike are you on Ryan? Looks seriously comfortable to be riding
how do you make seamless time-lapse mine flickers through each frame and takes ages to download
Thanks for the review. What frame-rate was this video shot in?
i just bought a session 4 a couple of days ago, and recorded some video riding on the highway. the wind noise is crazy . so i,m thinking if you stick a little piece of tape over the front microphone, that would probably help cut down some of the noise. well i did just that, and now i will go out and try it. ill let you know if it works.
did it work? i'm thinking of getting one and that's the one thing i'm still not sure about.
No didn't help at all
+fedoragibson tape a tiny sponge or thin foam piece over mic
Now its only $199!
I just got one for $130. It gets better and cheaper every year.
Awesome review, well executed.
What's on your left wrist?
Planing on buying one buy for fishing videos on the boat do you think it would be okay for that. Battery is not a problem has I can hook it in to 12v and keep it charged
+Bryan Neace Yes, I think it would work pretty well for your fishing videos. There are plenty of mounts available. -DrewZilla
Can you tell us how you mounted your gopro sessions onto the chin of your helmet please?
We just used one of the stock frames and mounts included with the Session. See 4:17 for a closer look. -DrewZilla
Is amazing i tink i will change mine i have go pro 3+... tnx
-DrewZilla (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sena-bluetooth-audio-back-for-gopro-with-waterproof-housing) (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/gopro-hero4-silver-camera) (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/gopro-hero4-black-camera) (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sena-prism-bluetooth-action-camera-motorsports-pack) (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sena-10u-bluetooth-headset)
good review considering this camera now
This review is legit! Great work. :)
please reply to this . what setting did you use for ur session i got mine and the 1080p at 60 dosnt look 1080 to me at all . yours looks very clear ??
I link in the description to the article on CommonTread would be great..
NICE review and honest ! Thanks your good work!
between the session and the hero+ which do you think would be the best for a track day? I'm planning on mounting it to the gas tank and I'm concerned about any audio issues they may have. thanks for your time!
+skythief123 You shouldn't have any audio issues if you mount on the tank, so I'd go for the Session unless you want to swap batteries. -DrewZilla
When you filmed this video was this the wisest angle?
thanks for the reply...another thing i read and see a lot of reviews saying that the image and video quality is not as good as compare to the hero4 silver. since you have been using it for sometime, whats your opinion on this? i have been thinking whether to get the hero4 session or hero4 silver...
+Ocean Eleven I recommend you read the companion article linked in the description, as Ryan details the differences. Basically, though, image quality is better with the Hero4 Silver. -DrewZilla
*www.revzilla.com/common-tread/gopro-hero4-session-does-a-small-package-still-deliver
-DrewZilla

Thank you all for the review. Can you also do a review on the Contour Roam 3?
+Pattons Place We don't currently carry Contour cameras, so we might not review it. -DrewZilla
Oh ok Thanks for the reply!
Hey is the sound recorded coming from the session camera mounted on your helmet? Or did you use a separate mic? Thank you!
-DrewZilla

-DrewZilla
hey RevZilla, does the glass lens scratch easily? from the way you use it any prone to scratches? i intend to buy one and was thinking if there is a need to buy a screen protector film to protect the glass from scratches or breaks. do advise?
+Ocean Eleven The glass is pretty strong, so you probably don't need any screen protector film. -DrewZilla
What video settings were used throughout the video? 1080p 60fps 1444p at 30fps?
Old post I know but I use this as of now and find the video to be almost like in slow motion, aka not smooth or actually speed I am doing. I am shooting in 1080p 60 or 30 wide view, seems to make know diff when I play back what I shoot and I have it mounted on chin part of helmet. Any advice on what I am doing wrong. Thanks
Hey I have a question: I have a session 4 and the sound is just horrible past 30 km/h because of the wind... do you also have this issue on a standard gopro since it's protected by a box that may stop the wind?
With the waterproof case on a standard GoPro, it definitely helps the wind noise. -DrewZilla
I like the camera. I want to use it for motovlogging. How are you bluetoothing to it?
We aren't using the Session with Bluetooth. In the video, we had a Sena Bluetooth communicator connected via Bluetooth to a Sena GP10 GoPro Audio Back attached to a regular GoPro Hero4 carried in a pocket, and that was used solely to record audio. We already had those devices, but most people don't, so for simple motovlogging, you might consider the Sena Prism Tube.
-DrewZilla
How long does it take to get a full charge. Also has the battery run time remained consistant compared to when they was new.
+Chris H A full charge takes about two hours using a wall adapter. Also, yes, battery run time has remained pretty consistent. -DrewZilla
what are you riding. dumb question ik but just curious I can't tell
Awesome video!!! I have one question, in your opinion, how much confidence would you have with side mount security with speeds of 150+?? I would be so nervous the thing would fly off. Thanks again, be safe!
*(Helmet) side mount*
+Mark B We recommend using a GoPro tether for additional security. -DrewZilla
*www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/gopro-camera-tethers
+RevZilla Thank you!!!
Is there a way of connecting a lavalier mic?
Unless I missed it, but you can't plug in an external mic into the Session and run it into the helmet for motovlogging, correct?
Thanks for the reply, Ryan. I'm in the market for a entry level camera, and I think I'd like the option to run a mic into the helmet for motovlogging. Just wish the other GoPro units weren't so damn expensive. Seriously considering a Drift Ghost.
+BigRedYeti I'm excited about the newly-announced Sena Prism Tube. It has an external microphone and speaker, so it looks like an easy (and affordable) way to get into motovlogging. No word on pricing yet though! -DrewZilla
*www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/sena-prism-tube
+RevZilla Hmmmm. I had not heard of the Prism Tube before, but I'm interested after reading the specs. I'll keep it on my radar for now. Much thanks, Drew!
You mentioned in the end that the mic is not good on these sessions, what type of microphone are you using to record this video?
The Sena 20S attached to Ryan's helmet was capturing his vocal audio.
Good review Ryan. Really liked it, not sure I can afford 4 of them btw
Hi
how have you connected your audio mic?
+Shaun Tiger1050 We recorded audio with the Sena 20S paired to a Sena GP10 Audio Back connected to a regular GoPro. That GoPro was used solely for the audio recording. All the video was captured with the Hero4 Session Cameras. If you already have a Bluetooth communicator, you may want a Sena Prism instead of a Hero4 Session to record your voice. -DrewZilla

IHi
I've had three sena gp10's over a short period of time, but they all had connectivity issues, when riding with other paired Bluetooth devices i.e. SatNav, mobile phones, headsets etc. it became to much of a hassle, especially when i'd made an awesome video only to find the audio had been kicked off, so went with a wired mic which works everytime. I only asked because no audio devices were visible in your video, but thanks for the speedy reply👍
Hi RevZilla , I'm gonna ask your opinion .. Is this camera good for Travel Vlog ?
+Alosh Yeahbois If you want to record your voice with a separate external microphone, then the Session would not be good for a travel vlog, because the Session does not support an external microphone input. If you want to make a motovlog with a helmet-mounted camera, a really affordable option would be the new Sena Prism Tube. If you are not making a motovlog and you just want to use the camera's built-in microphone, then the Session is a nice compact option. -DrewZilla

-DrewZilla

Hey thanks guy much appercaited.
hi, can I ask how you recorded the audio?? did you use a separate app to record the audio and cancel out the audio from the gopro. this video has been a help for deciding what camera to get as broke my hero1. cheers
also are you able to charge whilst using the camera on the road??
+Jonathan Casey I'll start with your follow-up question. No, you cannot really charge it while using it. As for the audio, in the video, we had a Sena Bluetooth communicator connected via Bluetooth to a Sena GP10 GoPro Audio Back attached to a regular GoPro Hero4 carried in a pocket, and that was used solely to record audio. We already had those devices, but most people don't, so for simple motovlogging, you might consider the Sena Prism Tube. I might have missed it but how do you synchronize the cameras?
+kmg501 Agree. It looks really hectic to manage all three shots in editing.
I imagine he recorded on all of them outside their respective cases pointed them all at his hands and clapped and then put them back in their cases
somehobo21 That's actually really clever. lol
+InvictvsNox I'm a video editor myself so I've been known to have one or two clever ideas before lol

That's really impressive given your implied economic standing! :P
Can you control multiple cameras simultaneously, with either a remote or the app?

What audio set up did you use while recording this video? Im looking at the session and was curious what microphone to use, can i use something like my sena smh10?
+Levi B If you have a Sena SMH10, you may be better off using the Sena Prism, since you can pair the Prism and SMH10 together for recording audio from your SMH10 to the camera via Bluetooth. -DrewZilla

Did you use anything special to mount onto the chin?
Nice tutorial, I purchased it yesterday :)
Lars Boon did you like that?!
Were you able to shoot with the same quality?
Cheers mate
It's a great camera 👌
What mic was used for the review itself? Not the GoPro mic correct?
I have a question...... Just bought my session an when I record it seems
to record clips when I want it to record continuously how do I fix that????
If you want to record continuously, connect the camera to the GoPro App on a smartphone, select video mode to be looping, then select looping intervals, and select your preferred interval. These instructions are also detailed in the owner's manual. -DrewZilla
THANX
Love the video! The camera also seems awesome andI´m going to buy it soon! :)
if there is anyone out there that has had the older gopros like the hero 3 and or just has the session cause on my hero 3 it takes more that 5 mins to download a 15 second video when filming on 1080p at 60fps and i was wondering if it is any faster over wifi to a phone? PLEASE HELP
