I actually had the chance to interview Jonell Elliott, the voice of Lara in this game, and she said all of the creative team involved in Angel of Darkness were so excited about this. The script was one of the best she had ever read and she still regards it as one of the most immersive and rewarding voiceover jobs she's ever done, so I can appreciate why there was so much disappointment when the game was released under such a quick turnaround and with so many bugs...

It's a game with so much ambition that was rushed out the door too early by higher ups. I really wish I could see what the final product would have been, and the games that followed it had the team been given enough time and resources to fulfil vision of the game.

@@Reds-Retros yeah! Especially as this was positioned to be the beginning of a trilogy, it would have been really terrific to have seen where this iteration of Lara would go. Fun fact: this game is so broken that most levels can be completed in seconds thanks to a glitch. If Lara jumps sideways into a wall at the correct angle, she'll momentarily clip into it with her leg, which will cause it to expand to cover the entire level for a split second, hitting the end-of-level trigger.

some time during development and most likely only a few weeks before the games launch they changed it and simply locked the door so you could no longer reach the old version of the tutorial instead of removing it from the game/disc

It's mostly Eidos' mismanagement. Had they skipped Tomb Raider Chronicles, which was a literal last cashgrab for the PS1 audience and had the entire Core Design team work on The Angel of Darkness from the very beginning instead of leaving a bunch of newbies without anyone to help them, they could have had enough time and resources to make a good game instead of this unfinished, clearly unpolished mess.

This game is so special, despite its many flaws. It has the best narrative out of all the Tomb Raider games to date...
Up until to this point, our Lara was known as an aloof, unstoppable and carefree heroine. She's out of her element in this game as she's a fugitive on the run, being pursued for a murder she doesn't even know if she's commited; therefore, the game's tone has a darker and more sombre feel, which is reflected in the game's phenomenal soundtrack and the in-game model of Lara herself.
I'm a lover of the darker things in life, which is probably why this game resonates with me and so many others even 18 years after its release.
Lara Croft, a fugitive on the run in the depths of Europe uncovering a mystery embellished in the dark arts, alchemy and horror.
Such a fucking unique take on this franchise. I am holding out for a remake of this game since the Survivor trilogy has concluded. This game has something to prove. It deserves its moment in the sunlight. It deserves a second chance.

Blurry textures, flat environmental lighting, bland character/level design and the font they used for the subtitles just make the game feel cheap. It obviously was released too early. @@derangel9143 Yeah, I think they wanted the release of the game to coincide with the release of the 2nd Tomb Raider movie. And apparently, according to another commentor, Eidos screwed over Core Design, by not giving them enough time, so they had to release the game BEFORE the movie, and delay it, twice. So, Angel Of Darkness is ALMOST a movie tie-in game. Because it released alongside the 2nd movie, according to the facts in this video. But you're right, dude. I'm not sure if more time would've helped either. But who knows? It could've. But then again, it may not have. Eidos wouldn’t let them kill off Lara, so they had the idea to make a completely next generation game Tomb Raider Angel Of Darkness, and release it in like 2004 or 2005. I think I remember hearing about that somewhere else, but I forget. Regardless, thank you, good sir. But, i don't think killing off Lara would've made anyone happy. There'd obviously still be pissed off fans the world over, of course. I think they definitely should've have just released Angel Of Darkness in 2004-2005, although I'm not sure if it would've helped. But it would've been helpful, and probably given the team working on the game some kind of downtime. I can't even believe they'd just do Lara and the team at Core Design dirty like that, and then force them to release a buggy, broken mess of a game, especially for a longtime series that's as beloved as Tomb Raider. And this is coming from someone who's never played a Tomb Raider game myself. But I do like how the series has always looked, so while I know it wasn't anything to replace Tomb Raider, I went and played the Uncharted series, which I love. It felt close to how playing Tomb Raider may have felt, but I also never owned a ps1. My parents thought it was too expensive. I did love my n64 though, given to me by my late Grandma. But we always only rented games, never bought them. But seeing how Tomb Raider looked, I always wanted the ps1. I thought it had so many better looking games or games just as good as the n64. And while that never happened, I did get the PS2. And traded in some games to get games like Kingdom Hearts 1, and some other games like .hack and many other games I can't remember, because it was like, 2003 when all this happened. I did see Angel Of Darkness before, and almost bought it, but something in my head told me it was a bad game. I don't know what it was. Maybe it was the fact that I was 10 or 11 at the time, or that I saw the cover art for KH and decided that looked cooler, because it had both Disney and Final Fantasy characters crossover, and I had to have it, but either way, I avoided AOD like the plague. A shame Eidos treated the people at Core Design like crap. So I'm guessing eidos interactive were almost like the British EA?

@@shawnfields2369 The first 4 games were fantastic. Eidos, (I guess you could call them British EA) saw how well the first game did, so they made them make a second game in only 1 year, and then Tomb Raider 2 was very successful so they made them release Tomb Raider 3 only a year later… then eventually they made them release every game only 1 year apart from each other. This led to Core Design being extremely stressed and overworked, which is why they wanted to kill off Lara. But you know the phrase ‘quit while you’re ahead’… that’s exactly what they should have done and they should have killed off Lara. Tomb Raider 4 was perfection, so they should have stopped there… because every game afterwards went seriously downhill and now the series has been rebooted twice and has nothing to do with the original Tomb Raider whatsoever.

Swimming around all the cut content with the debug tools in the PC version painted a pretty clear picture of the dev hell this was in. Sad.

I assume this is emulated and the picture cleaned up or up-res? 480i was always surprising to me the way it looked. Textures and stuff looked better on PS2 but the overall presentation was held back in that way compared to even Dreamcast, let alone NGC or Xbox.

  • @jeanpaulsinatra

It takes some getting used to. It'd take less if they didn't decide to tear up the basic control system that had worked just fine over the last five games and make you unable to change it, but I suppose that's what you get when Eidos worked the dev team like a Victorian mill owner

With CD saying they're going to unify the timelines I think they would be silly not to continue on from angel of darkness.

the strength bar is there because she was trapped in the great pyramid in Egypt and had to build back up her strength that's why it there. Also, Core worked on the game from 1999 after working on 4 games every year from 1996-1999 straight, but they had to make chronicles at the same time so the good team at core made chronicles for the 2000 release. So all the stuff made the Angel Of Darkness by the other team was all scrapped so they had to restart the game from scratch working a brand new game engine (PS2). If they fully made the game it would have been the best tomb raider game ever it's the best storyline.

A bit of advice to anyone reading this. If you somehow want to play and finish this game, as I did, don't jump straight into a TR game like Anniversary. It's like going from a tank, that you eventually got used to controlling, to a small feather which unfairly makes the first hours of Anniversary very frustrating.

I find this sad in a way. Because what could of been if they had more time with it because i feel the ideas amd concepts were new and intresting. Some what ahead of the time with the branching dialogues and such thags common in games now adding more sort of rpg elements. Its just ashame they cut so much and lost the direction with this one a little also the piss poor controls. Loved her look and that she had more of an edge was abit darker of a story lile this version of her just sad it all never came together. Awesome show guys 👍🏻✌🏻🇬🇧
