World standard airport, with all that it takes to be called an airport. Fellow Africans I urge you more especially those who are in authority to do the right thing when you are given an opportunity, emulate the South Africans who have the best infrastructure with nice architects, from Zambia.
I’ve been here before, there is even a hotel (lodge idk) in the airport for travellers to check into and stay for as long as they like (or until the expected flight like mine)
Great video. I have passed many times through OR Tambo and its definitely a First World airport. One can spend some hours airside checking out all the amenities. Plenty of restaurants, clean ablution blocks, great views of aircraft, spacious and well stocked lounges... And also bookshops where you can buy so many books on SA and the region; also some stores selling a wide range of curios and souvenirs of SA. In other African international airports, there are no bookshops or stores selling curios etc; only duty free shops selling the same old 'see it anywhere' stuff - Toblerone chocolate, Peter Stuyvesant fags, perfumes...
People are busy saying OR Tambo is the busy and number 1 .The Airport belongs to all SA citizens as SA government spends a lot for that OR Tambo Airport. Other Airports are Provincial no need of comparing as if Gauteng Premier Upgraded that Airport. OR Tambo is the most crucial Airport for International travel To and from South Africa ,please stop being childish.
Capetown n Durban are also international airports can handle international flights directly so yeah they can be compared. By the way Cape Town has been ranked as number these are views of the passagers, also you must take into account that the bigger the airport more troubles.
I was just there yesterday! My first time ever and I'm glad to say that the indoor parking confused me quite a lot 😅 not even joking. Also, there's a Bidvest Lounge in the airport and a train station "The gautrain" there.
So you all are busy arguing about Cape Town and OR Tambo Airport. You chosen a VERY expensive parking spot! I parked in this same area in 2010 and they hit me R600 for the privilege! Nope, I am not joking! Others had the same experience, and the Airports Companies response was that people should read the cost of parking on the sign next to the gate, before taking a ticket from the machine. Try that with a line of cars behind you hooting for you to get a move on! Your cheapest parking spots are in those towers where the City Lodge is, but it is quite a walk to the terminal from there.
Looks very dated and claustrophobic. A few changes like an artistic open glass skyroof will bring in more light into the building and indoor plants. Also a lot of congestion of passengers at the international arrivals as there are two staff members at the passport checkpoint.
It's actually not as dingy as the video makes it look, there is almost zero footage inside the original airport building which was already there when we emigrated to SA in 1974. Where did you see congestion at international arrivals? Passport control is airside in Terminal A, ground floor, before baggage claim, not shown in this video. The crowded area is check-in.
