It's not even archaic Japanese. The lyricist(s) purposely took out particles and messed with word order to make it hard to understand. So it ends up being more like an evocative word salad i.e. me writing

Your wee 'confused af' faces were adorable! Haha! I totally get why you'd feel like that with absolutely no context. This song plays during the absolute final battle in the final ending of Drakengard 3, which is a rhythm game (a callback to the final battle of the final ending of Drakengard 1) ... you're essentially fighting six different people, hence the weird transitions you hear throughout. Kuroi Uta is the main theme of the main character our of the six. This is all I can say without bringing in spoilers, but you should watch the actual fight itself. It's weird but wonderful and beautiful at the same time. ^u^

Love the genuine reaction from you. To me, the xylophone sounds like rain and the bass remind me on a heartbeat. The beginning of the song as well as the end both have a lamentable quality to me, as if the character is lamenting to having to deal with existing itself but also lamenting that the existence must end. The voice sings until the very last heartbeat struggling to persist or get a message across, as the last droplets of rain settle. The droplets, while a bit sad also sound peaceful unlike the rest of the piece.

My favorite detail in this song is the ending.
When it plays, the final boss, your goal is to neutralize and stop the song.
So, the ending fades out and plays slower and slower. To the point that the final note of the melodic phrase doesn't actually resolve.
It stops just before it can.
And while that's a success, the context of the story manages to turn it into an utter gut-punch, emotionally.

  • @sTraPattone
    @sTraPattone 2 ปีที่แล้ว +207

I'd like to give you some context to understand this song completely. "The Final Song" is the song that plays in the final battle of D3's ending E, one of the multiple ending of the game. It's a rhythm game-style battle, you basically have to follow the music and "counter attack" the music itself following its rhythm. There is no life bar for the boss, you have to go through the full song without missing a single note and, if you do, you start from the very beginning. It's one of the most difficult boss battles in the entire game history and since it is so music-related I raccomend you to watch a gameplay of it.
The final boss is basically a big dancing statue made of the 6 female protagonists of the game, called "Intoners". Every major change in the song, usually following the non-singing parts, corresponds to one Intoner. They all have very different personalities but share the same origin. This translates in a very chaotic song as you said, since every major part is very different from the others, but there is like a common theme throughout the entire song.
Loved your confused looks while listening 🤣
    Best regards :)

In 3, the music comes at you at a fairly normal pace and there is background music that it syncs up with. In Drakengard 1, there is only the tolling of bells and you MAKE the music by canceling each attack.
To make it even worse, there is a 12 second segement where the game throws 58 tones at you. That's over 200 BPM.

So Zero is essentially becoming a Watcher, probably even a Queen Watcher too, and was just stopped shortly before full convertion by Mikhail.

Just seeing your face in confusion to phase changes was so hilarious.
Huge spoilers for the game but since we're here already.
This song is essentially the last "boss fight" from the game, yes the song itself IS the fight.
It's perhaps one of the more infamous moments in gaming that left a lot of people with ptsd after it because at the very last minute the game turns from being an action game into an absolutely BRUTAL rhythm game that tries to mess with you as hard as you can practically making one of the easier ways to finish it to just blindfold yourself and follow the rhythm of the music not relying on the visuals at all.
Of course as the culmination of the game, and the series it has so much meaning and lore and symbolism and everything attached to it that it's crazy.
But I'm sure some Yoko Taro historian could explain it better than myself as I'm more of a simple enjoyer of his works.

So glad you reacted to this. I don't know what I was expecting but this was very entertaining! It's chaotic, it's confusing, but it's so beautiful and intense. And if you've played DoD1, hearing those bells at the start is PTSD triggering. I mentioned in my original request for this track to also check out Chapter XIII Closing from Drakengard 1, I think you can probably do a lot reacting to that knowing it's in the same story universe.
I think a solid idea for you would be to have Blind Reactions and then have a "Reprise" series where you react to it with context! Many games put a lot of effort into their OST design, DoD/Nier perhaps being at the very top of that list alongside the Ar Tonelico series, where the music is absolutely integral to the experience. FFXIV as you know as a player puts a similar amount of effort into marrying the OST with the context of the scenes, and it really elevates the whole experience (though it does stand on its own merits as you assert!).
Anywho, looking forward to more from you!

So here's something a lot of people don't know. There's 6 people total including the main character and without much spoilers you see how the songs somehow felt different, yet they connected? Well 5 of them have their own songs with different lyrics when you fight them individually and you feel like they're short and incomplete. Now when you get to the final fight all of their songs or "verses" along with the main character's come together to complete the song that has been broken up to each individual. Truly a masterpiece and will always be my favorite.

Ok love that people mention it being the rhythm game of a final boss but more behind the story. ZERO main badass potty mouth queen, is off to kill/re-absorb her 5 other sisters that were spilt from her. The people of the land know them as goddesses that use music as a form of combat besides their weapons. Each sister including zero sing each part. Starting with Zero being the more familiar understanding of Japanese and then goes to 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and Zero again at the last lines.
And that slowing down portion is sad because it's her farewell after finally taking back her sisters while being fully taken by basically the world most asshole version of poison (end the world level) and doing what she believes is saving the world and saying goodbye to her friend dragon that she's basically re raised since he reincarnated to a child like state again and he's grown with you as you battled each sister and taken each form of them back. To finally having all six turn into a hauntingly beautiful but destructive flower due to zero's poison (flower that settled on her eye) and only the dragon friend is powerful enough now to stop them.

Great reaction... now this may be know as the final song... however is the second to last... the actual last song of the game is "this silence is mine" where the game and zeros journey actually ends... i see much people have explained the context of the song but the actual explanation is all spoiler filled and to be totally understand you need to know most of the extra media surrounding the game... well ill put the spoilers down bellow this post to explain the context of the song... here comes the wall of text...
Spoilers: the last song is indeed a fight against all intoners against mikhail (the dragon) and thats why the gameplay changes, however to be exact in this fight youre actually fighting the flower while zero is trying to contain the flower power to keep it from spreading again as it happened before with zero and the sisters...
In truth the intoners as they are showed in game didnt existed thats why theyre all a lie that zero could not accept in the end (in a manga its explained how they tried to live together but finally it didnt worked), the origin of the intoner sisters is interesting but sad, they were a group of young rebels that tried to free the people from the land lords, however they failed and died in really poor conditions in a plaza alongside zero who was just a murder (in the end of her life zero killed just to survive almost as an animal, she killed entire families just to steal food for the day), so in the end of zero life she was the last survivor of the 6 girls (the last girl alive was going to be burned alive alongside the other 5 corpses... to which zero complained to herself because it was starting to rain and it was going to be harder for her to burn)...
Now as what the intoner sisters are actually... when zero was dying at her last moment she saw a flower thay forcefully revived her, however at that point she was tired of everything and just wanted to die, because she came to terms with the fact that the whole world just tried to kill her and there was just nothing for her so she just wanted to die... so she tried to rip the flower out of her, however the flower didnt liked that and what it did was split zeros power and past experiences into the 5 corpses around her, so each sister is a mix of the original girl and some portion of zero past (five is zeros desires to experience things and is cosumed by greed, four is zeros will to be just/pure and is consumed by her inferiority complex, three is zeros will to know and was consumed by obsesion, two is zeros will to be loved and gets consumed by grieve and one is zeros will to know things but she is not actually consumed by anything as she keep the power of the flower at bay by secluding herself) this resulted in zero not having enough power to end herself because to do it she had to kill all of her sisters and to make it worst the flower would keep making the sisters stronger and taking away her sanity (each sister has a trait that keep increasing without they being able to control eventually in five case would be desire manifested in her growing breast, four case it would be the desire to be pure and her growing nails, three is her knowledge and her growing hair, two is her need to be loved and her growing physical strenght and in one case is the desire to protect and the growing sharpness of her senses)... in turn zero keep getting duller and numb as time passed in the end she said that she was basically a walking corpse and thats why she needed to end her sisters as fast as she could.

Oh this was very interesting to watch, I've been with this series for a long time so I've been reminded on how chaotic this actually sounds out of context, like many commenters pointed out this plays at the absolute end of the game, and is followed by a rhythm boss battle where you have to restart if you get hit once
However I'd also like to add a couple of things that make this boss fight extra nighmarish
See the Drakengard/NieR are notorious for having framerate issues and lag in almost every game(it was the case up until Automata) So Imagine having to play a Rhythm game where it lags a lot and you die in one hit, and the worst part is that towards the end the game blacks out the screen for some dialogue BUT you're still expected to be on rhythm, meaning you could die during the final cutscene of the game

The gameplay was fine, it’s the cutscenes that make the PS3 poop itself. On actual hardware I had no frame drops during the sections where you’re playing the game, but in the cutscenes the game would frequently drop frames.

I'm currently playing through it and while the music is amazing and the gameplay serviceable (very repetitive though) the story itself is............uh, yeah. You literally can't go 1 minute without hearing a sex joke. I'm still only in Route B, so still got a ways to go. I don't think Yoko Taro is interested in remaking it though, especially with the more serious direction Nier:Automata took overall + Replicant Remastermake reinforcing that mindset.

Also if you ever get a chance to, you should definitely listen to Silence Is Mine, which is another song from Drakengard 3, which is sang by a woman who, from what I read, had suffered damages to her vocal cords or her throat and was hired specifically for that voice to sing it before she went to have surgery.

A thing I ABSOLUTELY love about Yoko Taro games and the choices made with the soundtrack I can only resume as "We won, at what cost".
Drakengard and NieR are pretty much the opposites of what most games give us: The joy and thrill of overcoming the odds and rising even above the gods as human beings. It feels like a hollow victory.
Those games shows that, even if the ending appears to be a happy one, it is just a momentary peace, that in a not so distance future everything will be doomed, but that was a choice the characters made along the way and I can only describe as "human" choices. It's refreshing seeing games not ending in a perfect good ending, nor a bitter sweet or bad ending as a what if scenarios.
A long time ago, I stumbled at some interviews of Yoko Taro explaining his mentality about the Drakengard and NieR games.
About Drakengard, he says that he noticed how many games graded you as you kill hundreds of thousands of creatures in a gloating manner, and only an insane person would enjoy such a thing, so he created Cain, the protagonist of the first game, to be an insane person who loves to murder anyone in his path.
With NieR, he was influenced by the 9/11 and the War on Terror and the philosophy he took from them was that people will commit the greatests atrocities if they believe are in the right.

This really has nothing to do with the song itself but one of my favorite memories with this series is watching one of my best friends play it on Twitch. One thing to keep in mind for Drakengard is that the final boss of 1 is a really hard out of nowhere rhythm game that turns the whole game on its head.
I remember *very* distinctly my friend getting to the end boss of 3 and during the loading screen going "please dont be a bullshit rhythm game boss," and upon realizing the boss this song accompanies she paused, put down the conteoller, left the room but you could still hear through the microphone "ITS A BULLSHIT RHYTHM BOSS!"

No exaggeration the Final Boss is a Rhythm Game to the beat of the song, and has a Lot of cheeky moments like the screen zooming in at one part making it very difficult to see the visual cues as well at the Very Very end of the song as the screen fades to black there's one last note played that can totally screw you if you put down your controller in celebration too early.
