Emil is arguably the real protagonist in the NieR series. Especially after you find out what he spent his life doing in Automata.

Emil's story is such a sad and tragic one. Every second of his life was hurt and pain and suffering. Stuck as a child forever but never able to be a child, his innocence taken away and everyone he cares about lost...Everything he cares about lost. Forced to do nothing but fight and fight and fight in battles that were never his for literally thousands of years until his sanity collapsed...
This theme is one of the greatest character themes ever made. It portrays every part of Emil's life, just a hint of hope mixed into it as he meets and joins people that care about him and love him for who he is and not what he was made to be. He falls in love with Nier. He almost gives everything to save him. This is an amazing song...but I cry every time I hear it.

@PaulaSchultz couple things. He wasn't human and he definitely wasn't "living". Emil was a sentient weapon. The original Emil died the moment he fuses with Halua from the magical experimentation. Emil becomes a weapon with a soul.

I was at the NieR orchestra in London back in January 2020, and when this song played, so many people in the audience started crying, including myself. Hearing this in person, I started reminiscing the time I discovered this song and the story of the game. It was at a time I had lots of personal struggle and was growing into adulthood. This song and the characters in the game helped me to understand and accept the changes, losses in life, and myself.

its fascinating the takes people have on music. the way you described this song is very interesting because it wasn't how i felt at first. i felt a deep sense of loneliness, like someone curled up in a ball in the corner of the room, but on top of that loneliness there's a hint of remembrance and calm happiness maybe even hope. it all feels like the aftermath of something horrible and yet they have to move on. lovely reaction, keep up the great work.

"Goodbye my friends, thank you for everything." Whoo boy, Emil Sacrifice is the pinnacle of Nier compositions for me. Having 100% completed both Replicant and Automata, Emil is a character that makes you immediately smile despite knowing everything he goes through. The scene that this plays during has you screaming, crying, and eventually accepting that Emil cannot be protected the way you want to protect him, you feel yourself being Kaine in this scene (or at least I did). The scene is visually beautiful, the dialogue punches you in the gut, the voice acting makes you cry, and the slight variations from each playthrough (there are added pieces of dialogue and cutscenes, especially ending C) add understanding and depth to Emil. The use of a child soprano is also just appropriate since Emil is a child himself, so it actually sounds like Emil could be performing. Emil just wanted friends who love him for himself and he found two other misfits who are trying to save the world. He knew the sacrifices and accepted them because he had already lost his sister and never wanted Nier to live with that guilt. Emil had his innocence taken from him, but he still went about trying to make everyone else's lives better.

All Emil wanted to do was protect those he loved. Weiss, Kaine and Nier himself. He falls in love with the younger brother NieR from replicant, he wants to marry him. It is at once heartwarming and devastating to watch another person be moved to tears by this song that has, over the past decade, lifted me up, cast me down, and been a consummate companion in the darkest hours of despair. It breaks my heart still to this day, but it never leaves me in a bad place. I am always reminded of the blessing of the story that Yoko Taro shared with us and that, even though we lose our innocence, that doesn't mean we have to lose who we are.
    Thank you for this.

  • @prinstyrio0
    @prinstyrio0 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The way you described this song is just what I've felt with it, but not realized it.
I've had an intense interest to write novels, and what has inspired a lot of stuff I've written or come up with so far is from the Nier soundtracks, and this in particular built on two characters, one who's a child that's caught up in a world changing turmoil and struggles to keep their innocence, whilst they're forced to take responsibility amongst these adults, and later sacrifices themselves which built on this piece where all the adult characters around feels this immense emptiness and loss of said innocence and pureness this child brought to their company as they tried to survive.
Another is a father who is a pretty jaded and simplistic man, willing to sacrifice and do anything to protect his children, but over the course begins to open up and let this voice of a child inside speak, as his children reaches out to him, to start taking action and value everyone around him as well, but in doing so loses one of his children and he goes through a rough time of bouncing back until coming to terms and letting that innocence inside him out again.
It all feels so clear now writing things down this way, whilst before it felt pretty vague to why this piece had these two characters in my head and events leading up to their demise and development. It still speaks more, but it definitely has this feeling of, how the child's voice in the soundtrack, is like the "dying" innocence and pureness reaching out to you, but it knows it's being sacrificed, yet stays with you until the end as you wake into a much harsher world with open eyes.

To me the beginnings of this song make me picture this song being sung in a movie where there's a funeral procession for a beloved king. It's somber but light, as if trying to say goodbye and celebrating their memory at the same time. There's a sense of remembrance, of nostalgia. Then when it picks up it feels like it's trying to rally up your emotions, to pick yourself back up, that it'll be ok. There's this hopeful tone and warmth that seeps in to the melody.
It's like you said, it's a song about the loss of innocence. But I think a better way of putting it is more like, it's a song of saying goodbye to innocence.
And if I put it into the context of the game, it's a song saying goodbye to Emil. A song of Emil's hope for Nier and Kaine's happiness after his sacrifice, telling them that things will be ok after he's gone.
Subbed! I'm super interested to see the rest of your Nier series. The Nier soundtracks, both Replicant and Automata, are honestly the best soundtracks I've heard from any piece of media; and automatic fave games of all time after playing them.

The thing I love the most about the Nier soundtracks is that no matter how the songs get improved over time by being included in other games in the series (think song of the ancients being in all the games and how it’s evolved) every single version of the songs has their own charm that stands out among one another. While replicant 1.22 does somehow manage to make the experience fresh with all the new renditions of the music, there are still many songs that I actually prefer the gestalt/original replicant versions for. I would definitely recommend listening to both versions of each song for all the music for anyone who has the time, it’s really something special

I love the music found in Nier so much because the usage of Chaos language brings out the feeling of listening to a song in a foreign language. You can't understand what they are saying, so you need to find the meaning through the emotions the music evokes. However, the difference here is no one can understand what it is saying. The music and this one in particular can only be felt. Meaning can only be evoked by what it means to you personally. And aligning this with what I believe to be the core principle of music (communication), it's truly a beautiful work of art. Thanks for doing this one, Marco.

On the first video of yours I ever saw, you had 989 subscribers. Already in a short week or two, that number has quintupled. In that first video, I commented that I had played Automata first, and how much of an impact Kaine Salvation had on me. Emil Sacrifice was the same. When you play Automata before the predecessor, you don't understand Emil Sacrifice. You get that weird orb and his silly cute merchant song. Then, later, you get Emil Despair. A huge, grand song of battle and loss, and all of your senses are being overwhelmed. It's too much. Going back? *Knowing* where that silly song came from? And knowing that Emil does not? And never will again? It breaks my heart. Your videos bring me to tears. Simple words, genuine emotion, your mere presence with me listening to Emil's heart breaking only cements the belief that you are very good at what you are doing, and I cannot wait to see everything you do.

As someone who played Automata before Replicant/Gestalt, I saw Emil as an amusing character who provided some much needed comic relief to an otherwise heavily depressing game. There were many times I'd be in a scene with serious dialogue and suddenly hear Emil drive by with his goofy shop song and I'd have to stop everything until my giggle fit was over.
When I played Replicant and learned about Emils INCREDIBLY tragic backstory, and then hearing this song and vaguely recognizing it... it now makes that silly shop song hit WAY different.

Yoko Taro is a genius that manages to grip the absurdness of life in his works. His pieces are soaked in existential questions but are always based in very human emotions of despair and hope. And the music in his games are able to bring these emotions out like nothing else.
This is connected to the spoiler ahead, but I hope you, Marco, won't listento Weight of the World from Automata until you finished the game. As much as I would like to hear your unbiased take, this piece needs its context.
    Maybe spoiler ahead:
The Nier series is not a story with ... a seemingly good ending. All is lost that people would fight for. But then there is always hope. Hope to live on despite the terrible weight of revelations together with people you care about. Especially Nier Automatas last 15 minutes hammer that home to me. Life is absurd and the world you knew and gave you meaning could crumble or never even have existed. But you can still press on.

@@MarcoMeatball ah, okay. I wasn't too invested emotionally in the story throughout my playthrough. I knew about the ending. But when I came closer to the last hour of the game I wanted to see where this would go.
The E ending is beautiful and piece of art that is the perfect fit for aninteractive medium such as a game. Nier has many deeper philosophical, humanistic discussions going on but really all of those are just there to facilitate the last message of the ending which is not subtle at all. I mean the pod spell it out for you.
Personally, I think Weight of theWorld is a good track. It's beautiful. But only the context of the ending and it's dynamic transitions in that moment elevate it to something truely amazing.
