Broke my neck. Edit; was around 17 tried to fs boardslide down a flat bar, not knowing my idiot friend waxed a metal rail, the board slipped and I woke up in the hospital with a neck brace. Fucked me up, bad for life. Barely made it in the army and now I have chronic scoliosis.
I was bombing a hill and I did a powerslide and I fell forward going pretty fast and I was sliding on the ground for like 5 seconds, and cut my arm a lotttttt
It's tough watching videos like this because it's like vicariously watching tony become self aware of not only the end of his career but the end of his ability to skate. It's an inevitability but heartbreaking to watch it go down. Thanks Tony for everything you've done for Skateboarding, I don't skate anymore but my life wouldn't have been the same without the games, the videos and trick tips that you contributed.
He ain't done yet sir. I guarantee you. I'm a physical therapist for older adults and a skater. This man ain't going down yet. Inevitably our muscles get weaker with age but the longer you push, the longer you will keep it, well up until weeks/months of death. Will he be skating exactly the same? Maybe not. Will he still be better than most of us? Most likely.
It's tough but it has only made me admire him far more. The fact he's facing such existentially terrifying experiences so openly, viscerally and vulnerably while still reminding people both of the importance to continue doing what you love but respect the changing tides of life is maybe his most important gift to us all.
@@wyattchew9996 yes, especially when you realize skating itself has never been just specifically about how "good" you are or a competition with others. It's a self achievement or battle with the self, and a lot of it is driven with passion, that doesn't rely on how "bad" or "good" a person is doing, but how they are experiencing that battle with themselves.
I don’t think he sees it as heart breaking. Does he want to skate forever? Probably, but he’s been really realistic about this. He knows he won’t be able to continue this forever. Even with this injury, he was aware that he might not ever come fully back from this, but he was ready if that happened. I think when the day comes where he can no longer skate, it will be bitter sweet for him. He will obviously miss it, but he will be so proud of all the years he did, all the things he accomplished, how much skating helped his mental health etc.
I had foot surgery earlier this year and now I’m fighting a knee injury (I’m 56) and I keep telling myself if Tony can do it so can you. He is so inspirational in so many ways.
Easily one of he greatest ever. Even though it's not my style, I still have tremendous respect for him for helping skateboarding become what it is today.
That's the look all aging skateboarders get eventually.. If they break their leg or just feel a little more sore than usual all skaters get that look just the same.
What a living legend! Tony's character serves as proof to where he is today. So much drive and such an inspiration. I can't imagine how hard it is to come back from such a serious injury and at the age he's at.
Inspiring. I’d love to see a series of older skaters giving tips on staying healthy enough to keep skating as they get older. I’m 32 and as soon as I turned 30 it seems like it’s been non stop small injuries that come out of nowhere and take forever to heal.
I’m 36 and luckily able to stay pretty injury-free still. The one thing I know attributes to it is maintaining a strength training program. Whether it’s lifting weights or calisthenics, that with stretching and mobility just helps promote longevity and prevent injuries. Ain’t getting any younger so we gotta implement this at least 2-3 times a week. Keep shredding tho
Do some body weight squats every day, at least 15. Train in any martial art, grappling etc. Eat sensibly. Find other interests in life too, that's very important.
I'm 35 and can't resist the urge to skate, HOWEVER if I skate hard today.... You best believe I'm sore for the next 2 days! Go to the gym and resistance train. Don't lift to get big... Lift for functionality. God bless dude ✌️
I had a rare femur surgery 11 weeks ago and watching this sent me on an emotional rollercoaster. I'm 11 weeks out and I've been doing PT as well. I am still working on range of motion and using a cane, I can't imagine trying to do a kickflip. I hope Tony and Ed can work together to achieve all his healing goals. :]
I broke my foot this past June in a skating accident. I have an extra bone in the back of my heel called the Os Trigonum which made healing really hard. But seeing Tony keep working and fighting (plus the story of Lizzie's mega ramp slam) really keeps me going to heal up. I am finally able to walk fairly normally! now it's all strength building on my right foot.
I broke my collar bone skating a few months ago. Felt like the end of the world when I couldn't skate, 47yrs old it some what dented my confidence too, but slowly getting more confident again. For a serious injury like that Tony, big props to you for giving it 100% to get back on the board. Stay strong 💪 ✨️
"It's not all the way there. There's still a piece of my leg missing not fully healed" but yet your still pulling off air tricks! Tony is the number one GOAT of skateboarding!
It must be hard when you spent most of your youth without a major injury and then age catches you out. Healing takes way longer after 40. Im 48 now, but had a lot of bone breaks in youth. It heals well and quickly in your teens to 20's though. My collar bone is twice the thickness of my other one from a drunken high speed crash on a bmx. I skated the next day with a broken wrist when i was 14. My friend loaned me a wrist guard and we cut the heavy hospital cast off. I slept with the wrist guard on instead. 😂 Breaks when your young feel like they set back stronger but ache badly now with age. I can literally tell what the weather will be tomorrow by which bone aches the most.
To say this man has been an influence in my life is a gross understatement. Reading books about him as a kid, getting into skateboarding, the culture, the style. It's hard to see time changing it
That pain and worry about wether you’ll ever be able to skateboard again hurts so much more than the injury. Hope he heals up or finds something that also gives him meaning. I garden now and cruise on my longboard sometimes.
Inspiring. Played hoops more than 35 years. Twisted my wrist, ankle. Broke my nose, slipped disc lumbar and cervical area. Would still be playin at 56 but my c23, 45,67 ,T1 are so messed up my doctor told me to stopped. I cant run anymore becoz the disk would flare up. I do ride my bike with my neck brace just around 30mins. The exercise i do regularly is lying down and doing dumbell press with a towel beneath my neck. Sports is life to me regardless of my age. Man, i miss my youth so much playing hoops everyday. Never regreted going hard even with all the issues i have.
We’re all proud of you man. I’ve been keeping up on your progress on the hawk vs wolf podcast. Like musks just said breaking his ankle can’t stop skateboarding.
Thank God that Tony was safe after this! I hear a broken femur is absolutely BRUTAL! My dad had total hip replacement surgery and a couple of days later he carried laundry up the stairs and walked without a cane a week later
Its hard to see any skater in that condition, especially one you've been watching your whole life. Hopefully he's able to come out of this enough to accomplish the things he feels like he has left to do with skateboarding.
this is real sad. As skaters I think we all know the fun could end in an instant. For me it wss three years ago. I thought I would skate for life and Tony has always been an inspiration for that. Keep it going! Legend
I’m no skateboarder by any means. But mad respect for Tony, he’s a true athlete and “beast”. Life changing injury, surgery, right back to the board…..true love of the sport.
He was literally riding in the Vert Alert back in July. You could tell he didn’t have it all back but it was incredible to watch him try. It was like watching Kobe Bryant.
I had a "tib fib" (broken tibia and fibula) in my left leg almost 30 years ago. I ended up with a titanium rod in my leg for about 18 months. Had to have it removed because it was causing me pain when ever the barometric pressure changed rapidly. I remember one day I was walking back to my office on the campus of SDSU, and I collapsed in pain. It was early spring and a high pressure system had developed with Santa Ana winds.
I'm middle aged, and I broke my fibula skateboarding 5 days after Tony broke his femur. I saw him walking shortly after and thought I had it worse than him because I couldn't walk whatsoever. Nope. He definitely has a worse injury. It's been over 6 months, and I'm finally pain free. That's more than I can say for Mr. Hawk.
Tony hawk is a legend in skateboarding and respect for everything he's done for the sport. But comes a time when the risk outweighs the reward with extreme sports
I spiral broke my fibula and tibula while simultaneously shattering my ankle and cracked a growth plate all in one bail… I haven’t been able to skate the same since, basically the older we get and the more injuries we get we need to overcome and sometimes sadly ride a little less hard. But still ride.
Stay strong Tony.... You're already a hero in almost every extreme action sport fan, you don't need to risk your physical health to prove anything. We already know how awesome you are.... 😊😁
Yeah, definitely thanks to modern surgery : I recovered from torn acl and ripped meniscus when I was in my 40's , I still ride today due to good medicine! Keep it up with your doctors and rehab gym, Tony, and you'll soon be spinning till you turn 60 :))
I broke my femur bone January 2022. Good Ole Wisconsin, slipped on the ice and my left side of my body took the force, instant femur break. Almost had to have a hip replacement. Shits no joke. I still can't really even trust myself to push on a skateboard...
I'm sure people tell him all the time to tone down the skating at his age but if you could do what he's done and does on a skateboard how could you really want to stop doing amazing skating like that?
I broke my femoral neck basically my hip, and I have some tough hardware, I got back into skateboarding 4 years later and it’s hurting pretty bad I don’t wanna give up tho
A bad injury indeed, but all part of the game and this will not end skating for Tony. If Matt Hoffman can keep going then so can he. Keep on riding Tony!
In my mid 50's now there is lots of skateboard tricks I know how to do in my mind, but the bulging discs in my back say no to the pain and my mind says no to the risk. I used to drop into vert ramps like it was nothing and now I am afraid. Clearly, Tony and his aging body are also in conflict.
You can also see how bad his necks range of motion is, probably has fucked up shoulders as well. You can see right at the begging where he mentions the ramp he looks over at it and looks like he is stiff as a board.
I feel like everyone should be doing the exercises your physio is showing you regardless of age or whether they skate or not. People take their bodies way too much for granted. Stretch, warm up, practice balance / jumping around on your board on flat ground, skate regular and switch foot. Anyway peace and good luck Tony. You can totally recover. It's all in your head. I know that's a big statement but yeh. If the doctors did their job right then your hip should be stronger than before considering its metal now.

Accidentally stabbed my shin to a sharp piece of wood.
snapped my ankle 2020. , but back on the board today like nothing happened....full recovery!
